The Pistons fired coach Lawrence Frank less than 24 hours after their season finale against the Brooklyn Nets.

Jackson will not join the Pistons as their new head coach, but bringing him in as an adviser should make things go much smoother in Detroit. The 11-time NBA Champion coach is one of the most respected people in all of professional basketball even though he hasn’t been apart of the game since retiring after the 2010-2011 season.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the move for Jackson will be short-term and more than likely end once a new head coach is put in place. Pistons’ owner Tom Gores has a great friendship with Jackson, which resulted in the advising position.

Gores owns a private equity firm in California, called Platinum Equity, and partner Mark Barnhill told the Detroit Free Press that the owner’s relationship with Jackson made for conversations about the Pistons. Those conversations led his advisory role with the team.

“The more conversations evolved, Tom realized he (Jackson) would be a good resource in an advisory capacity,” Barnhill said.

Who’s better to give advice on coaching decisions than Phil Jackson? Outside of having 11 rings, Jackson finished his coaching career with an astonishing .704 winning percentage in 1,640 games with the clipboard.

He won 1,155 games in his career along with 229 more in the playoffs. Jackson’s best run came during a span of six straight NBA Championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers from 1995-to-2002.

Three in Chicago to start were immediately followed by three straight in Los Angeles in his first three seasons as Kobe Bryant’s new head coach. It’s also hard to forget about the guy who wore number 23 for the Bulls named Michael Jordan that became the greatest of all-time under Jackson’s wing.

Jackson will surely be inducted into the Hall of Fame and quite possibly on the first ballot. He will take to Detroit this week to help the Pistons interview candidates to replace Lawrence Frank.

During his two-year stint as Pistons’ head coach, Frank failed to win more than 29 games in a season and finished well out of playoff contention each year. He finished with a 54-94 record with the Pistons after six seasons with the Nets where he never made it out of the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

Nevertheless, Frank is now out of a job and Phil Jackson has come in as a consultant for the Detroit Pistons.

Will using Phil Jackson as an adviser help the Detroit Pistons bring in quality coaches? Will Jackson’s short-term role turn into something more within the Pistons’ organization?

According to to the report, the Pistons cut ties with the Frank on Thursday, just one day after the team lost at Brooklyn to finish the season 29-53.

The 42-year-old coach led the Pistons to a meager 54-94 record during his two-year stint.

“We thank Lawrence for his hard work and dedication, but we feel it is in the best interest of the franchise to make a change at this time,” Pistons president Joe Dumars said. “Decisions like this are never easy and we wish Lawrence well in the future.”

With the firing, Frank became the third straight Pistons coach to be let go without reaching the third year of his contract.

Frank, who was in his ninth season as a head coach in the NBA, is guaranteed $4 million for the 2013-14 season, and the team controls a $4 million option for the 2014-15 season.

Prior to the Pistons, Frank spent seven seasons coaching the Nets where he accumulated a 225-241 record.

He took over the team after Byron Scott was fired during the 2003-04 season and won his first 13 games, a record win streak to start an NBA head-coaching career. Frank was fired from the Nets in 2009.

After the Nets, Frank spent the next season as an assistant to Doc Rivers with the Boston Celtics before Detroit hired him prior to the NBA lockout in 2011.

Lawrence Frank wasn’t the only head coach to lose his job this week.

As reported earlier by The Inquisitr, Cleveland Cavs coach Byron Scott was fired following a third consecutive losing season with team. Cleveland finished the 2012-13 campaign with the third-worst record in the NBA, going just 24-58.

During Scott’s three-year stint with the team, the Cavs were a dismal 64-166, marking the lowest winning percentage (.278) in franchise history.

NBA London Live 2013 will send the two teams to London on January 17, 2013 to play a regular season game at the O2 in London.

This will be the third time that the NBA has played a regular season game in London. In 2011, the Toronto Raptors and the New Jersey Nets played two games at The O2.

NBA Commissioner David Stern said:

“London was the epicenter of global sports this summer, and the Olympics were a tremendous showcase for basketball. Playing our third regular-season game in the city in three years and having historic franchises like the Knicks and Pistons serve as our ambassadors provide extraordinary opportunities to further the game’s growth and development in the UK and throughout Europe.”

NBA.com reports that NBA teams have played a total of 115 games internationally since 1988. Sixteen of those games have been regular season games in Japan, the UK, and Mexico.

Dennis Mannion, President of CEO of the Detroit Pistons, said:

“The Pistons are excited to participate in the NBA London Live 2013 … Playing a regular-season game in London against the New York Knicks will provide a great experience for our players and we look forward to showcasing our brand of Hard, Smart and Together Detroit Basketball to fans on a global scale.”

New York Knicks Head Coach Mike Woodson added:

“I am excited to show our great fans in London what New York basketball is about … For Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler to return to the city where they helped Team USA win the Gold makes it even more special for our team.”

The New York Knicks and the Detroit Pistons won’t be the only two teams playing overseas this season. During the pre-season, the Boston Celtics will play a pair of games in Istanbul and Milan, the Dallas Mavericks will play in Berlin and Barcelona, and the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat will play games in Beijing and Shanghai. The Orlando Magic and the New Orleans Hornets will also play a pre-season game in Mexico City.

Do you like the international NBA games?

Villanueva, who was limited to 13 games during the 2012 NBA season due to a sprained ankle, was allegedly cut from the Domincan team by head coach John Calipari because he was out of shape.

“Charlie was not in good form when we saw him,” Calipari told Deportes en la Z. “He was overweight, and unfortunately, we could not slow down the entire team and it was a decision taken collectively. Last year, Charlie behaved really well with us and his only problem was his weight.”

News of the alleged “cut” came after Villanueva was noticely absent from summer conditioning camp that the Dominican team participated in this year.

The former UConn star responded to the reports by Tweeting a picture of himself standing on a scale that read 243.5, at least 10 pounds less than his playing weight of 255 pounds.

Villanueva then wrote:

“Last comment, How can you get cut from something, when you NEVER tried out? is that possible? i guess so, lol.”

Villanueva, 27, still has two years remaining on a 5-year, $40 million dollar deal he signed with the Pistons in 2009. In the 2012 NBA season, he averaged career lows in minutes (13.8), points (7.0) and rebounds (3.7).

The Sporting News reports that under the coaching of Calipari, Villanueva led the Dominican team to a bronze medal at last summer’s FIBA Americas Championship.

This year’s team, which features NBA talent such as Al Horford, Jon Horford and Francisco García, currently is working out in Lexington.

Police have also charged Wallace with unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon.

Authorities in suburban Detroit say Wallace was arrested after a routine traffic stop revealed alcohol on his breath.

The 37-year-old was pulled over at 3 a.m. ET on Saturday when officers realized that his Cadillac Escalade was driving erratically, upon checking his backpack they found the unloaded pistol.

At this time his blood alcohol content is not known but police say it was over the legal Michigan limit of 0.08 percent.

After being arraigned Wallace was released on a $5,000 personal bond. The basketball star will return to court on Monday.

At this time Wallace’s reps, the NBA and police officials are refusing to comment on the incident. Further details will be provided after his Monday court date.

Just another week, just another professional athlete attempting to skirt the law!

Joe D would like to hire Mike Woodson because the two have a good working relationship, as Woodson served on the Pistons staff under Larry Brown in their 2004 championship team. New owner, Tom Gores, and his staff that includes former New York Knicks executive Dave Checketts seem to favor Lawrence Frank as he made a heck of an impression on them during his interview process.

At this point is seems Woodson would have to be the closest thing to a favorite as not only does he have a good relationship with Dumars, but has a track record of helping teams rebuild. He took over a terrible Atlanta Hawks team and that team won more games each year Woodson was in charge. They wound up with 53 wins last year, and Woodson employs a defense first system that seems to be favored by Dumars. He seems like a pretty good fit for a team that needs to squash some locker room drama and rebuild itself.

Frank has head coaching experience with the New Jersey Nets, and a long career as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Grizzlies, The University of Tennessee, and most recently with the Boston Celtics. He could be considered the favorite since the guy who will ultimately make this choice, owner Gores, seems to be very impressed with him.

It is not uncommon for an owner to put their own stamp on their team. It also not uncommon for a new owner to come in and mix things up, especially for a team that has had its host of problems. We shall see on this one.

For the Detroit Pistons big changes are ahead. This team wallowed in misery for over a year while awaiting new ownership to come in. That ownership has arrived, they have fired their coach and they are working to hire a new one. Now General Manger Joe Dumars must work to retool his roster. The additions of PG Brandon Knight, SF Kyle Singler, and PF Vernon Macklin via the NBA draft was just the beginning. Now some remnants of the great early 2000′s Pistons teams will be shown the door.

There seems to be little doubt that Tayshaun Prince, who is a free agent, will not be resigned. They now have several other younger forwards ready to take his spot. If there is a lockout (and that seems pretty likely at this point), it would seem likely that when the NBA gets back to business each team would be allowed to buy out one toxic contract without salary cap interference. That means the Pistons could dump a contract that is no longer working for them.

If that happens, there are several candidates on the roster. Rip Hamilton has been a locker room cancer and is owed 21 million dollars over the next two seasons guaranteed. However, with the addition of Knight the Pistons may choose to dump Ben Gordon’s deal. He is owed 33 million dollars over the next three years, and no longer seems to have a spot on the roster.

If the 2011-12 NBA season is shortened by labor unrest Rip’s deal becomes more valuable on the trade market. Dumars could win a lot of goodwill with the fans and new ownership if he got something for him. Gordon, with the addition of Knight and the belief Rodney Stuckey will evolve under a new coach, becomes more expendable and expensive. Either way the Pistons have a lot of roster work to do.

On one hand Dumars is a team legend, has rebuilt this team once but on the other he is directly responsible for its current state. At least 80% responsible for the joke that this team has become. Granted he has been in place for 10 years and the team has a 60% winning percentage, a NBA title, and five consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference finals in that time.

However, those numbers do not paint the whole picture. Dumars has committed over 47 million dollars of payroll to a roster that only produced 30 wins in 2010-11. He also has over 47 million dollars committed to current players heading into 2011-12. Not great ways to begin a serious rebuild effort. Tayshaun Prince is a free agent and will likely not return, and this club owes locker room cancer Rip Hamilton 12.5 next year with an option for 12.5 the year after. Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva both will get paid nearly 19 million dollars in each of the next two seasons.

Dumars has also fired a coach on average of every two years. Granted the Larry Brown and Rick Carlisle firings were heavily influenced by then owner Bill Davidson, but a bad team with a huge payroll, and a history of coaching instability is not a great draw as Dumars tries to hire his sixth head coach in just over 10 years.

Dumars did rebuild the Pistons into a perennial contender following the dreaded teal and burgundy era, and part of me wishes that one of my childhood heroes should get the chance to rebuild it again. However, three years is a long time for a guy who has not made a lot of great decisions over the past several NBA seasons.

The Detroit Pistons sale to Tom Gores has finally been approved, but Piston fans and Detroit fans in general wonder what is next for this franchise. In a way their current state feels a lot lower than the post Bad Boy era when the team had to draft Grant Hill to become relevant again. This is a team with a multitude of problems the least of which was no direction for the ownership. Now Gores must step in and right the ship.

The very first thing he should do is fire head coach John Kuester. Sure Kuester never got any support from the previous ownership or management for that matter, but the players will not play for him and that means he has to go. The very next thing the Pistons must do is rid themselves of locker room cancer Rip Hamilton. Rip has got to go by any means necessary, and then the management can set upon rebuilding this once great franchise.

Beyond the roster, coaches, and management this team has another problem. They are stale, they are boring and the time has come to jazz up the logo and the color scheme. I am not talking about a big shift like the dreaded teal and burgundy days, but a younger, hipper approach to the classic red, white and blue, Piston logo.

Seriously look at that logo. As a lifelong Detroit sports fan I can honestly say it is the most boring logo of the four major Detroit Sports teams. I am not a graphic artist, so I don’t now what it needs to be, I just now it needs to be jazzed up a bit. This team needs to get its fan base excited and a new logo is the best, quickest way to do just that.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavilers, and Detroit Pistons are working on a deal that would help each team, while may not exactly be the fairest for all parties involved. For now let us take a look at that each team would be giving up and getting:

Detroit Pistons- would send Rip Hamilton and the 8th overall pick to Cleveland for a big portion of their massive trade exception they got in the Lebron James affair last summer

Cleveland Cavaliers- the Cavs send the 8th overall pick from Detroit and their own fourth pick to Minnesota for the second over all pick. Giving the Cavs the first two picks in the draft

Minnesota Timberwolves- Would end up with the fourth and eight overall picks

Why this trade makes no sense is the Pistons are essentially trading a guy and a high draft pick for nothing. So the T Wolves or the Cavs would have to throw in a player or two for them to save a little face. It does make sense for the Pistons to do whatever is necessary to dump Hamilton who has been a locker room cancer.

For the Cavs, who would likely buy out Hamilton and use the first two picks to begin a rebuild project for their team this trade makes perfect sense. For the T Wolves it gets them out of a position to draft Derrick Williams and gives them a great shot at Enes Kanter with the 4th pick and many options at pick #8.

First Mike Illitch, owner of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, failed to close a deal to purchase the Pistons and now businessman Tom Gores seems to have stalled efforts to purchase the team. The problems seem to be about revenue, but in all reality this is a complicated deal that not only includes the Pistons, their home arena, but also two nearby outdoor music venues.

The real issues here are of course money. The Pistons are a mess, and are having trouble drawing in fans. They currently rank 18th among the 30 NBA teams and are averaging just over 16 thousand fans per home game. This is a team that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, and that cannot happen until a new owner is in place. It seems all of their issues have severely hurt the bottom line.

On top of that it seems very likely that the revenue generated by the Palace of Auburn Hills (The Pistons home) has been severely hurt as well. The Pistons are the main tenant of that building and their failure to draw is depressing what the Palace is actually worth. Since this facility also hosts other events it seems likely that the state of the Michigan economy is depressing that value further. We can likely come to the same conclusion about the two outdoor music venues that are apart of this deal.

These issues with the latest buyer may reopen the door for Mike Illitch who would like to purchase the team and then leverage the city of Detroit into building a new downtown arena for both the Pistons and the Red Wings. Of course it could also open up the door to someone wanting to buy the team and relocate it out of Michigan. Right now it is hard to say which, but this is certainly not good for the Pistons or their fans.

The Detroit Pistons are a mess, they need to be rebuilt yet they are still holding onto pieces for some strange reason. Worse than that they are holding onto pieces that would bring back the things that they need, IE cap flexibility and/or draft picks to retool. So far General Manger Joe Dumars would like to trade away Rip Hamilton and the 25 million he is owed, but not Tayshaun Prince who is still somewhat young and has an expiring contract.

This is the final strike for Dumars. He has help to ruin this team by his poor drafting, bad free agent signings, and trading away the wrong pieces for the wrong pieces. As much as anything the Pistons need a new GM. Even in the NBA, a team can be ruined by not drafting well and we are seeing that play out with the Pistons.

Rip Hamilton is owed 25 million dollars over the next two seasons, and to be frank he is not the player he once was. Tayshaun Prince is still only 30 years old and his on an expiring deal. He can still play great defense on the wing and his scoring a career best 14.6 points per game. Many teams could use him and they may be willing to give up prospects, draft picks, or something else to help the Pistons rebuild.

As it stands the Pistons are paying Rip a huge chunk of change to mostly sit on the bench. That isn’t good for anyone and it damn sure isn’t making this team any better.

This story really shows what a mess the Detroit Pistons are, and the really poor job General Manger Joe Dumars has done the past few seasons running this team. Rip Hamilton missed a team practice and a game last weekend because of a tummy ache. There have been many allegations in the press that Rip has quit on this team, and the team has been looking to dump him and his big contract for quite some time. The real story here is teh Pistons are a freaking mess, and that may be scarring off potential new ownership.

To be fair Rip has a great deal to be upset about. He use to be the focal point of the Piston offense, working off screens to get a nice mid-range jumper. A few days after Rip signed his huge deal Dumars traded PG Chauncey Billups and blew up a roster that had gone to six straight Eastern Conference finals. I have long argued that Dumars traded the wrong piece, and it now seems that trade was a monumental mistake.

Now Ben Gordon (who might end up being another Dumars mistake) is the starter and Rip comes off the bench. His numbers are way down, and his role has shrunk nearly every month. All of that is driving down his value on the trade market, and that is bad for everyone. It seems Rip needs a change of scenery and maybe should have been the piece dealt two years ago.

In the end I blame Dumars. He signed this guy to a big deal, and then pulled the rug out from under him. In my mind he has every right to feel upset. However he cannot not show up to team functions because his belly hurts. That is pure crap and will only led to the Pistons not being able to deal him and his attitude.

Karen Davidson inherited the team when her husband died, and now faces a big estate tax bill. There have been some rumors the sale of the team needs to happen by January for Karen to make good on that bill. Now we learn that Magic Johnson would like to sell off his 5% ownership of the Los Angels Lakers and buy a larger share of his hometown Detroit Pistons. If Magic wants to buy in he would likely have to join one of three groups who are said to be interested in owning the Pistons.

With that being said let us take a look at the three groups ranked by how I think they would do as owners of my home town team:

1.Tom Gores- Tom was born in Israel but grew up in Michigan and attended MSU. He is a billionaire, and reportedly a huge basketball fan. He runs Platinum Equity a company that has 27.5 billion dollars in annual revenue. Tom has the money and the passion to be a great basketball owner. He is also young and could be in place for a long time.
2.George Postolos- George use to run the Houston Rockets, and did a very good job on the business side with that team. He led a group that finished second to Michael Jordan for ownership of the Charlotte Bobcats. He also served as special assistant to NBA commissioner David Stern. He is passionate about basketball, and does a very good job helping his teams make money.
3.Mike Illitch- Illitch already owns the Detroit Red Wings (NHL), and Tigers (MLB). He likely wants to add the Pistons as a tenant to a new downtown Detroit arena for his Wings, and would like to gain control of two outdoor concert venues owned by the Pistons operating company. The problem here is two fold. One, his reasons for ownership has nothing to do with a passion for basketball. Two, we have seen guys own multiple teams in other cities and it never seems like a good idea. Plus he has done a pretty piss poor job running the Tigers, after earning a Hall of Fame induction for his ownership of the Wings.

As we continue our year in review, we must also remember that this is also the end of a decade. It got me wondering about who would be the Detroit Professional of the past decade? What would the qualifications be? Should a distinction be awarded on stats, or on accomplishment? How high shall we rank popularity of fans?

They are all a part of the formula, but the sad fact here is Detroit Sports over this past decade have been rather poor. Sure three World Championships were delivered to this city, and the Detroit Tigers made a World Series experience, however the Tigers were also one of the worst team in MLB history in 2003, the Detroit Lions have been a joke for a long time, and while the Detroit Pistons looked to be on a magical run they only won one title and have regressed quickly into obscurity.

Let us take a look at this by team. Nominees from the Detroit Red Wings seems pretty easy, Captain Steve Yzerman and Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Both delivered two Stanley Cup Championships to Detroit, while Lidstrom also won six Norris Trophy’s as the best Defenseman in the entire NHL. For the Pistons we have to go with Chauncey Billups or Ben Wallace, both were key parts of the magical Piston run, and their departure signaled the end of an era. In the case of the Lions, Kicker Jason Hanson gets nominated by default. The Tigers don’t really seem to have a nominee. No one player made a lasting impact on this team over the past 10 years. The closest thing we have to that is Curtis Granderson, so by default he is the Tigers nominee.

In the end I think we have to go with Nicklas Lidstrom of the Red Wings. For six of the past ten years he was voted to be the best at his position. He brought two Stanley Cups to Detroit, one as Captain. In fact many Red Wings fans would say that he was the single most important piece of the Red Wings organization that has won four Stanley Cup in the last 15 years.

No matter what the local spin is, this is a team that is either rebuilding or reloading for anther historic run in the NBA post season. After reaching six straight Eastern Conference Finals the Pistons were swept out of the first round of last year’s playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Over the summer there was much second guessing about the trade that sent Chauncey Billups to Denver for one Allen Iverson. That is a move that clearly did not work, so Piston GM Joe Dumars had to go out and change the way his team is going to play.

The 2009-10 Pistons will not be the Bad Boy Pistons for which Dumars is an alumnus. They will also not be the Defense first team that won the NBA title in 2004. What they will be is left to be seen, but this is a team with a new Head Coach in John Kuester who has a few new weapons in Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon. What their roles will be is yet to be known, but this should be a team that scores more points then in years past.

The other big question, this team has is who is going to play center. They have former number one draft pick Kwame Brown, and free agent acquisitions Chris Wilcox and Ben Wallace on the roster. While Wallace was a center piece of the 2004 Championship team, his role now is more than likely one of mentor to Brown and Wilcox. While this team was able to rebuild a young nucleus quickly only time will tell if they can achieve the heights of past Piston teams.

No uniform change in the history of the NBA was more unpopular with a team’s fans then these Teal numbers. Given the fact that the team was so bad during this period many Piston fans call the time span between 1996 and 2001 as the “Teal” era.

As a native Detroiter the day the Pistons announced their new colors was the day I stopped being a big Pistons fan. These uniforms were so terrible an the team was so awful that is was a hrad thing to watch. In the early part of the 1990′s the Pistons were the bad Boys- the guys where were rough and tumble- and the only NBA team to defeat Michael Jordan in his prime.

The only real star of the Teal era for the Pistons was Forward Grant Hill, and the team went through a lot of big money free agent wash outs including; Christian Laettner, Bison Dele, Cedric Ceballos, and Loy Vaught. These uniforms were so terrible that the first thing Joe Dumars, who had to play his final seasons in these Teal abominations, immediately switched the Pistons colors back to the red, white, and blue when he was hired as President.

In fact, Dumars went so far as to give Pistons fans new red, white, and blue Pistons hats and jerseys in exchange for them returning their awful teal ones. It seems even Dumars wanted to erase the memory of the Detroit Pistons Teal era.

Davidson is credited as being a trailblazer for the NBA. After acquiring the team in 1974 for $6 million, Davidson turned what many then believed to be a dying franchise around into one of the NBA’s most successful team. His innovations include building the first entirely privately funded stadium, and being the first to buy his team their own plane to travel between games.

Despite a valuation of between $300-$450 million, Davidson swore that he would never sell the Pistons, and that the team would be passed down to his family.

Along with a successful business career, Davidson also owned the WNBA’s Detroit Shock, and previously owned the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. He was also a noted philanthropist.
