Well folks it is official, Mike Shanahan has been introduced to the media as the new head coach of the Washington Redskins, and he becomes the second most scrutinized man in Washington DC. Besides his head coaching duties, Shanahan will be the executive vice president of football operations and he not General Manager Bruce Allen will have the final say on personnel decisions. While Shanahan has a proven record, and is one of a select group of coaches to have two Super Bowl Rings, that does not guarantee success for the Redskins.

First and foremost no Super Bowl winning coach has gone on to another city and added another super bowl championship. Sure Bill Parcells and Mike Holmgren got their new teams to a Super Bowl, but they did not win. Parcells was able to rebuild three different teams, and it looks like that is what Redskins owner Daniel Snyder wants Shanahan to do. This may not be a move to win a Super Bowl, but to rebuild the skins from the laughing stock they have become.

Of course for that to work a few things must happen. First Snyder must let his football guys run his football team. NFL owners should not have an active role within the team, they should hire the right people and sit back and enjoy the ride. Second Shanahan and Allen must be on the same page, they must have a shared vision of how to rebuild the team, and they must work together to bring that vision to fruition. Lastly Shanahan must remember why he is no longer the Head man in Denver. He must seek out Allen’s help on personnel, and hire a top notch defensive coordinator to run that side of the ball.

The Washington Redskins are 2-3 so many might view their situation as dire, but their two wins came at the expense of two winless clubs and this is a team in crisis. Head Coach Jim Zorn has the appearance of a coach just playing out his string waiting to be fired, and for the amount of payroll on this team; they should at least be contenders.

However it seems their owner, Daniel Snyder, has not a clue how to run a NFL team.
Snyder routinely treat the Redskins like his own personal Fantasy team. Instead of building up a corps of young talent he goes out each off season and picks up the most expensive free agent he can find. He has vastly overpaid for his players, and has passed on the expense of those signings to his fan base.

This team tried to hire Jim Fassel twice, once in 2004 before Joe Gibbs was lured out of retirement, and again following Gibbs’ second retirement. Fassel wanted Jim Zorn to be his Offensive coordinator, and was also interested in hiring Rex Ryan to be his Defensive coordinator. After news leaked that Fassel was the man for the job, many were particularly negative about the hiring. Due to contractual obligations only Zorn was able to interview to be on the staff so Snyder made him his head coach. Fassel Went on to take a job with the UFL, and that may just be the best decision, he ever made.

Zorn simply wasn’t ready to be a NFL head coach. The proof of that, beyond their record seems to be the fat that last Sunday this team had a tackle playing guard, and a guard playing tackle. This team also gave up five sacks and only gained 198 yards to the hapless Carolina Panthers. Zorn cannot manage the game; they blew their last timeout Sunday with 8 minutes still left to play.
