Cynthia Nixon stirred the human rights pot recently with controversial comments that suggested being gay is a choice. She later backtracked, saying that for her, at least, it is. She’s back for a third round of clarification.

“While I don’t often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual,” she said in a recent statement. “I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have ‘chosen’ is to be in a gay relationship.”

She said that her original comments were meant to shed light on her own story of becoming a homosexual, despite giving her original speech to a completely gay audience; a speech that was intended to be something of a rallying cry in defense of gay rights. According to Nixon, since homosexuals come into the gay community in a variety of different ways, “we can’t and shouldn’t be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering.” Additionally, she clarifies that most members of the gay community, “cannot and do not choose the gender of the persons with whom they seek to have intimate relationships because, unlike me, they are only attracted to one sex.”

Does this finally clear the air surrounding her initial comments? Has she done enough damage control… or gotten enough press off this? Methinks all this back-tracking shows that maybe Nixon is a little more confused about her sexuality than she originally thought!

Cynthia Nixon can’t seem to stay out the news lately.

First, she’s making controversial comments about homosexuality, and now the former Sex and the City glamor-girl has debuted a new look- completely shaving her signature red locks and rocking a totally bald look. And not a pixie cut, or a Sinead O’Connor “Nothing Compares 2 u” short-short buzz, girlfriend has gone bald-cap bald.

Of course, Nixon has good reason to court press attention right now- the actress is starring in the Broadway play “Wit,” about a professor suffering the final stages of ovarian cancer. And the role is likely bittersweet for Nixon, a breast cancer survivor herself. Nixon debuted the look this morning on the chat show Live With Kelly. 

As Nixon prepares to premiere on Broadway Thursday night, controversy has continued to swirl around her comments late last week surrounding the origin of homosexuality. While many argue that the orientation is a choice, it is relatively well-accepted most people are either born gay or born straight. Nixon, however, thinks that being gay is sometimes a choice, and said in her case, it was. She explained:

I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line “I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better.’” And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me. A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it’s a choice, then we could opt out. I say it doesn’t matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not.

But Nixon believes that whether homosexuality is a choice or a pre-destined attribute, it shouldn’t matter and to denigrate it as a choice lends credence to anti-gay rhetoric:

Why can’t it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we’re just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don’t think that they should define the terms of the debate. I also feel like people think I was walking around in a cloud and didn’t realize I was gay, which I find really offensive. I find it offensive to me, but I also find it offensive to all the men I’ve been out with.

Sex in the City star Cynthia Nixon has raised some eyebrows lately for her comments concerning her own homosexuality.  Nixon came out as a lesbian in 2004.  She has never apologized for being gay nor felt the need to explain herself, but recently she decided to tell the New York Times that being gay is a choice.

She was quoted as saying,

The interview was just recently published, but she has already come under attack from some gay activists.  The activists claim that to  call being gay a choice is too insinuate that they could easily choose to be straight which is a common belief among those who would deny gays equal rights.

John Aravosis, a blogger with America Blog slammed Nixon for the way in which she said that being gay was a choice. He said,

“It’s not a ‘choice,’ unless you consider my opting to date a guy with brown hair versus a guy with blonde hair a ‘choice,’” he writes. “It’s only a choice among flavors I already like… every religious right hatemonger is now going to quote this woman every single time they want to deny us our civil rights.”

Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon and girlfriend Christine Marinoni are engaged.

Nixon announced the news during the Love, Peace and Marriage Equality rally, a pro-gay marriage event New York on Sunday (May 17.)

Nixon began dating Marinoni in 2003 after breaking up with her long time partner Danny Mozes, the father of her two children. Nixon said last year that she had plans to marry Marinoni, although the pair only became officially engaged last month. No date has been set for the wedding.

Ellen DeGeneres announced that she’ll be marrying her girlfriend Portia de Rossi since California State Law has decided to legalize same-sex marriages. After making the announcement yesterday during the show’s taping, someone spilled to TMZ and Ellen subsequently released the following to The Advocate:

I’m thrilled that the California supreme court overturned the ban on gay marriage. I can’t wait to get married. We all deserve the same rights, and I believe that someday we’ll look back on this and not allowing gays to marry will seem as absurd as not allowing women to vote.

The next couple I hope we get to see walk down the aisle is Cynthia Nixon and longtime girlfriend Christine Marinoni, especially after she revealed that she would consider if “if it became legal” in New York.

There are a lot of people celebrating out there, celebrities or not, and that includes all the Californian wedding planners and florists. If they’re happy, I’m happy!
