Black Friday turned into a buying bonanza for consumers this year and now it looks as if Cyber Monday managed to do the same, cashing in to the tune of $1.25 billion according to web research firm comScore.

That total is up from $1.03 billion in 2010, showing yet another positive buying trend for consumers who have generally thought less of the U.S. Economy in 2011.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal a comScore analyst says Cyber Monday:

”Is increasing in importance, with virtually all retailers getting involved and more consumers knowing it for big discounts.”

While in the past Cyber Monday was reserved mostly for the likes of Amazon, Buy.com and other primary online retailers this year saw various brick and mortar shops opening up their sites for shopping including Target.com, Walmart.com and various others.

While Black Friday sales increased by 7% PayPal points out that the big winner was tablet and smartphone manufacturers who witnessed a 500% increase in the number of people making payments from their portable devices.

While Cyber Monday and Black Friday sales do not necessarily signal a positive outcome for retailers heading further into the holiday shopping season it does show that buyers were excited about deep discounts at the register and in front of their computers in 2011.

Do you think Cyber Monday could one day take over the sales lead from brick and mortar stores and their Black Friday sales?

If you haven’t already blown all of your money from the Cyber Monday deals on offer all over the web, Microsoft is throwing a little Cyber Monday sale of their own on Xbox Live today, with discounts on several XBLA titles.

The sale is admittedly a little weak, but there are a couple of good deals to be had. You have Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection on sale for 400 Microsoft Points (normally 800), Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale on sale for 600 Microsoft Points (normally 1200), Beyond Good & Evil HD for a steal at 240 Microsoft Points (normally 800), and Risk: Factions for 200 Microsoft Points (normally 800).

Beyond Good & Evil HD is an absolute must buy even at its normal price of 800 Microsoft Points, so you’d be doing yourself a favor by picking that one up for 240. Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection is also a fairly good deal if you’re into the classic Mortal Kombat games, although you absolutely should not pick this one up for online play. To say that it’s awful would be an understatement.

The deals will be available today only, so act fast if you’re interested in picking up any of these four discounted titles.

If you’re feeling a bit pressured to spend, spend spend as the Cyber Monday deals filter across your Facebook and Twitter feeds, today is not the only day to save on your biggest Christmas and holiday purchases.

Sure, there are some great Cyber Monday deals in 2011, but they’re not always or even often the lowest prices you’ll see all season. Of course, it’s difficult to tell exactly when prices will drop to their absolute lowest, leaving you more money in your budget for stocking stuffers and post-mall cocktails. But while Cyber Monday deals are hot, there will be more deal hotness to come. The New York Times consulted with computer science professor and artificial intelligence expert Oren Etzioni, who- the paper points out- spent Black Friday scuba diving in Bali rather than hunting for deals. (To which we respectfully point out that if you can afford a Thanksgiving trip to Bali you probably don’t need to be punching people at Walmart for a $2 waffle maker.) Etzioni said that better prices can and often do come after Cyber Monday deals are cleared away for the year. He explains:

“The bottom line is, Black Friday is for the retailers to go from the red into the black… It’s not really for people to get great deals on the most popular products.”

Etzioni said toys especially “have a short shelf life,” and that as Christmas (and the end of December) draws nearer, retailers are likely to “slash” prices in an effort to unload excess stock before the new year rolls around. Have you found some Cyber Monday 2011 deals you can’t pass up, or are you rolling the dice and waiting a bit longer in hopes of further cuts?

Now that we have the internet, the Black Friday phenomenon is so puzzling because we all know Cyber Monday exists.

If you’re one of the clever multitudes that avoided waffle maker riots on Thursday night slash Friday morning, you might be looking to kick off your Cyber Monday spending orgy after that 10 o’clock meeting. But like Black Friday before it, Cyber Monday has the distinction of being a bit of information overload for the person looking to buy all the things. Where are deals located, and will you get there early enough? Everyone knows retailers like to stock minimal amounts of doorbusters and leave the regular-priced stuff for everyone to quibble over as they get enveloped in a Cyber Monday deals frenzy.

Don’t panic! Luckily, being internet-based, it’s a bit easier to aggregate Cyber Monday deals together than it would be for actually physically going to stores themselves, and there are a few sites that will help you in your quest. First up is a year-round favorite, that is especially helpful in finding the best Cyber Monday deals- Retail Me Not. A first line of e-shopping defense on any day of the year, Retail Me Not showcases the most popular deals on the web and features coupon codes galore, as well as sale listings and printable coupons to cover those times you can’t get out of actually, physically putting down the Mountain Dew and heading out to the shops.

Another popular aggregator is CyberMonday.com, which deals specifically in Cyber Monday sales. Out of the big deal sites- Amazon, Kohl’s, Macy’s, JC Penney, Hollister, et al- where do you plan to do your Cyber Monday shopping?

If you want to get a great deal, you can head on down to your local Walmart on Thanksgiving at 10 p.m., wait in line with hundreds of other people, then fight for your life as you make a mad dash for all the Doorbuster Black Friday deals at midnight. Or, you can sit on your couch and take advantage of the Cyber Monday Ads.

It’s your choice. And whatever option you choose to go with, you’re going to find great deals.

Dan de Grandpre, CEO and editor-in-chief of Dealnews.com, told MSNBC:

“Over the last year, Cyber Monday has caught up to Black Friday. As recently as three years ago, Black Friday, dominated by Big Store brands, was clearly better than smaller brand-focused and clothing-focused Cyber Monday, in terms of the number and quality of deals, as well as the number of participating retailers.

But that isn’t true today. The NPD Group, a worldwide leader for provider of reliable and comprehensive consumer and retail information for a wide range of industries, says that major retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and Target have all committed to providing equally as enticing deals on Cyber Monday.

Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at the NPD Group, said:

“These days, consumers don’t care whether you call it Black Friday or Cyber Monday… all they care about is the price. And retailers, increasingly having to grab consumers’ attention during Thanksgiving leisure time, are now so willing to be flexible and move these deal dates around, they don’t seem to care what you call these days either.”

According to the National Retail Federation, American consumers are shopping more and more online. According to the NRF, 36% of holiday shopping will be done online this year, compared to 32.7 percent in 2010. The NRF also says that the number of online shoppers has consistently grown over the last five years. In 2006, 60.7 million people shopped online on Cyber Monday. Last year, that number grew to 106.9 million.

How will you be doing your shopping this year? Will you try to get a door buster deal on Black Friday? Or are you going to peruse some Cyber Monday ads instead?

Is it a recovering economy or increased trust in internet based transactions that have caused a sharp increase in consumers chasing online deals on Cyber Monday this year?

A bit of both, says National Retail Federation president Matthew Shea to the Los Angeles Times, quite wordily:

“While Black Friday weekend is not always an indicator of holiday season performance, retailers should be encouraged that a focus on value and discretionary gifts has shoppers in the spirit to spend,” he said. “As retailers look ahead to the first few weeks of December, it will be important for them to keep momentum going with savings and incentives.”

Per the trade group, Black Friday foot traffic was up from 195 million crazed shoppers in 2009 to an estimated 212 million this year, so it’s not all the convenience of shopping in your boxer shorts. Average dollars spent jumped just over 6%, from about $343 per shopper last year to $365 on average this year.

A consultant for a management firm speaking to the paper said that examining the practices of web shoppers is an important component in measuring the impact of Cyber Monday on overall 2010 holiday season sales:

“The other thing that is important to watch is the shift to online,” [Laura] Gurski said. “Not only are consumers going out there for convenience to make their purchases in a greater number, but they’re also buying more items at a time. In years past, perhaps they’d buy five items in a transaction, now they’re buying seven.”

Did you participate in one or both shopping days? Which one yielded better deals?

Do you already have a headache from trying to sort the wheat from the chaff for Cyber Monday?

A lot of the usability of deals comes down to your personal shopping style. I’ve seen myriad lists of certain stores’ offerings for the web’s discountiest day, a big round up of items I have no interest in buying. One of the best aspects of web shopping is choice, so if I were in fo big ticket stuff like cameras and iPods, I’d shop around.

Luckily, there are some shopping ninja tools you can employ to get what you really want on Cyber Monday: coupons, codes, and free shipping, bitches. Here are three quick ways to get the best Cyber Monday coupons, Cyber Monday codes or Cyber Monday free shipping deals so you can get money off things you’re already buying.

Stalking- it isn’t just for Facebook: Persistence pays off, and a quick glance at a few select Twitter accounts proffers deal after deal. Many retailers are giving codes for 20-40% off for shoppers today, but those most likely will be indie or smaller shops rather than Target, Walmart, Sears… Creating a separate Twitter list and becoming a fan on Facebook for your favorite retailers, small and large alike, will alert you not only to Cyber Monday deals, but also year-round ones.

Many (bricks and mortar) stores accept mobile proof of coupons, too, so it’s a good habit to have. If you really like a retailer, getting in on their text notifications isn’t too bad of an idea, either. I just got a text from New York & Company that all shipping is free today. I was like “yay, I have friends! Oh…” But if I wanted to give the gift or milquetoast career stretch pants to administrative assistants, I would have been so stoked.

Find a reputable deal site and CTRL+F5: RetailMeNot.com is my personal favorite, and I always check there before hitting “buy this item” on any site. But CyberMonday.com is a great source for Cyber Monday codes and discounts, and the updates are coming fast and furious. You can follow them on Facebook or Twitter for updates that come with your daily browsing.

Google it, bitches: If you are buying a bigger ticket or widely available item, it helps to do a quick Google Shopping search and ensure you’re not just buying that thing because you’re buying other things. With the free shipping that abounds in many cyber-storefronts today, there’s no need to put all your eggs in one basket.

As much as I love shiny new gadgets at deep discounts, I didn’t go out on Black Friday.

For one thing, I hate people. As a former New York City resident now living on marginally less people-infested Long Island, anything involving crowds and people in close proximity, particularly competing for something, makes me go all stabby. (Plus, I almost got into a catfight in Wal-Mart a few weeks ago over the last case of Diet Cherry Pepsi. I was there first and that woman lost her damn mind.) Considering the large volume of crowds expected by stores and riot gear calmly stacked outside in the hours leading up to the sales, I reasoned that shopping on Black Friday was not worth the hassle, no matter how many accessories my iPhone needs to really work as it should.

As is generally always the case, I was so right. Everyone I know who went out for the doorbusters came back worse than empty handed- they came back bogged down with shit they didn’t want or need, because no one wants to get up at 3am and buy nothing. The big “deals” we all salivated over for the past few weeks were like raffles, with few people scooping up a free Lego Rock Band at Old Navy or a $200 laptop.

Enter Cyber Monday, the online version of Black Friday. While your boss will notice you absent the office for a few hours and the piles of stuff stacked in it after if you nip out to the shops, lots of workers can sneak in some e-tail therapy at their desks under the boss’ radar.

One massive advantage to Cyber Monday shopping is the reduced ability of retailers to jerk shoppers around. While many people lined up at Best Buy for scarce, cheap netbooks and notebooks, your total investment of time for Cyber Monday shopping is a few clicks around a site to find where they’ve hidden the deals. If the quantities are super limited like in the stores, you’ll know without having to find a spot, push through crowds and knock down an old lady. Convenient!

While the big box stores warrant a post of their own, a great place to start your Cyber Monday strategizing is Retail Me Not, a deal aggregator with codes and deals submitted by the internet at large.Their list is exhaustive, but the site has quick, easy and intuitive search functions making the process pretty simple.

As listings for genuine Cyber Monday sales and deals are scarce or ambiguous, it seems the best strategy for the day is to surf early and surf often. Sites begin sales days at different time based on location and policy, so some update as early as midnight. And bear in mind that stores are just as desperate as shoppers this year to stimulate their finances, so deals are likely to go hot and heavy for the entire Christmas season. Do a quick Google shopping scan before searching to ensure the price you’re about to pay is indeed the lowest. And if you know of any fantastic deals we may be missing, ping me on Twitter at @klacapria and I’ll update with the good ones.

If you’re like me, no discount in the world is worth braving the crazed throngs of Black Friday bargain hunters that only seems to grow more frantic every year.

However, an aversion to crowds, people or those pushy nail care system shillers at the mall doesn’t mean you’ll miss all the good buys on retail’s most riot-tastic day of the year. Deals for Cyber Monday, the online-shopping equivalent of Black Friday, have begun to circulate and many of them are just as enticing as their bricks and mortar equivalents without the hair-pulling and crotch punching.

Personal favorite coupon code clearinghouse Retail Me Not has a live, updating list of Cyber Monday deals- some of which span the whole weekend if you have a grinchy boss who like, expects you to do work and stuff. (Even if you’re buying gifts for Christmas on your own schedule, it’s worth checking the site before you do because if there’s a code, it’s likely to be there. Free money, people!) Another good rundown of deals, albeit centered on Black Friday, is DealTalker. A list of Black Friday weekend discounts can be found there, and a lot of the incentives run through Monday. Lastly, savings.com has a “Cyber Monday” tag, with a current list of crowd-sourced deals for the day.

Here’s a little tech shopping tip for your holiday planning: Apple has quietly authorized its retail store managers to match competitors’ prices, according to a report published at Apple retail store blog ifoAppleStore.com.

As we reported earlier this week, independent online retailers are already revealing some significant discounts for MacBooks and iMacs. Now, ifoAppleStore says Apple’s own locations will dip just as low — if you ask. And, if the reports are correct, the move won’t just be limited to Black Friday, either.

In order to qualify, ifoAppleStore says, you’ll have to supply proof of the competitor’s pricing. Of course, one would hope the Apple retail store would be willing to beat the price, not just match it — otherwise, why bother?

While retailers are holding their breath for a strong Black Friday this week, some new online data suggests people may not be as excited about the event as in years past.

Online research firm Hitwise found searches related to Black Friday deals are lower right now than they were this time last year. While the searches had been growing year-to-year for some time, they’ve now dropped back almost to 2006 levels on a week-to-week comparison.

As you can see in Hitwise’s graph, the searches are still climbing, so the verdict isn’t in just yet and it’s still possible that people are just delaying their deal hunting.

Another noteworthy shift: Hitwise analysts found Black Friday-related search terms are becoming more specific and complex this season. More people are looking for certain retailers rather than generalized deals, with retailer-specific searches up 11 percent so far from 2007.

It may not all be the economy, though. A report published at The Wall Street Journal this morning predicts Cyber Monday sales will increase this year, with more and more retailers focusing on the post-Black Friday Internet rush. A survey by Shop.org found 83.7 percent of stores are planning promotions for next Monday, compared to 72.2 percent last year.

If you’re looking for the best places to find Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, we’ve made it simple for you.
