In what is certainly in the running for OMG best coma ever, a Croatian teenager who had “only just” begun studying German and allegedly had minimal exposure to the language woke up from a coma speaking German fluently.

The unnamed teenager, who was in a coma for 24 hours, exhibited another baffling linguistic symptom upon regaining consciousness- not only was she said to suddenly be fluent in German, but she was also reportedly unable to communicate in her native Croatian. The original report in the UK’s Telegraph is a bit w00-heavy- quoted doctors seem to be implying that the teen’s newly acquired skill is metaphysical in nature:

“There are references to cases where people who have been seriously ill and perhaps in a coma have woken up being able to speak other languages – sometimes even the Biblical languages such as that spoken in old Babylon or Egypt – at the moment though any speculation would remain just that – speculation – so it’s better to continue tests until we actually know something.”

Dujomir Marasovic, the director of the hospital in which the girl was treated, feels the explanation behind the episode can be explained by science… eventually.

“You never know when recovering from such a trauma how the brain will react. Obviously we have some theories although at the moment we are limited in what we can say because we have to respect the privacy of the patient.”

No further information is available about the girl’s age or current condition. Spooky if true.

A woman has been charged by an Italian court for pimping her 7 year old daughter for money to support her drug habit.

The woman, known only as Ines B., was found guilty in court in Milan, Italy yesterday, of locking her 7 year old daughter in a room with men who raped her. The junkie mother then used the money the men paid her to buy drugs. The repeated incidents happened in 2004.

According to the Croatian Times, social workers immediately took the 7 year old girl into protective custody. The mother was sentenced to 14 years in jail and ordered to pay damages equivalent to $211,500 US.

Hopefully social workers can ease the child’s mental pain and place her in a home where she’ll spend the rest of her childhood as normal as possible. Poor kid.
