Cisco’s earnings for the quarter ending January 23 surged as the tech giant reported surging sales as the global economy recovers.

Cisco reported second quarter (to Jan 23) net sales of $9.8 billion, up 8% vs the same quarter last year. Net GAAP income came in at $1.9 billion or $0.32 per share, up 23%, and non-GAAP net income (excluding charges for stock-option compensation and one-time charges) of $2.3 billion or $0.40 per share.

The Cisco earnings beat market expectations of non-GAAP net income of $0.35 per share and revenue of $9.4 billion.

“Our outstanding Q2 results exceeded our expectations and we believe they provide a clear indication that we are entering the second phase of the economic recovery” CEO John Chambers said in a statement. “During the quarter we saw dramatic across the board acceleration and sequential improvement in our business in almost all areas.”

CSCO stock traded up 3.64% in after hours trading to $23.91.

The newest iPhone App from Cisco is perfect for internet security experts looking to protect their devices and ultimately the personal and business information of their companies employees. The program provides users with internet traffic and e-mail monitoring alerts and even allows IP addresses to be entered for specific websites and servers so users can check the site or servers “reputation.” Those risks are determined base on various factors including traffic volume and location.

The program probably won’t do standard users all that much good, Cisco is aiming the program at IT managers and security experts and is providing SIO TO Go abilities which provides various security news feeds, a Cisco Risk Report, access to the companies security blog, Twitter feeds and other information that may be of use when determining company protocols and blacklisting certain locations.

To gather information the program uses Cisco’s own email monitoring technology, while also access popular information gather options include the WhoIs directory for determining where a site is located, what type of traffic it gets and any reports of malware and other potentially harmful software the sites and server may be distributing.

The program is free to use and is rather intuitive for first time users with simple entry forms and excellent data output. [iPodNN]

The company announced plans to buy the instant messaging platform this morning, though the price isn’t being disclosed.

Cisco says it’ll use the Jabber technology to expand its own IM service within its enterprise collaboration tools. It’s certainly fighting hard to grow those tools, too. The Silicon Valley company announced its completed acquisition of e-mail/calendar software company PostPath just a couple of days ago. And something seems to be working: Cisco’s shares are up about 6 percent so far today.

Jabber, which allows you to communicate across a variety of IM services, is currently based in Denver. Cisco hasn’t discussed its plans for that office or the people who currently work there.

The deal is expected to be completed by early 2009.

Colorful San Mateo based startup Akimbo has finally shut its doors <strike>$39.7</strike> million later, according to a report at VentureBeat.

Akimbo initially starting as a VOD integrated hardware and content provider, then became an internet only solution that offered a software interface for Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition, and as of February this year (and with another $8 million in a bank) tried to reinvent itself again as a white label video hosting provider.

Initial investors included AT&T and Cisco, and the February round came from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and Zone Ventures.

The intriguing part is the last round in February being made despite the companies continued failures in every model it tried; what exactly was the company spinning to the VC’s? There’s no official reports yet from the company or the investors, but it should be asked whether the VC’s were deceived on the last round as something is very amiss here when the company shuts 3 months after a capital injection (and the VC’s aren’t stupid). Staff numbers for the company were reported to be only around a dozen people, so where did the money go?

Update: GigaOm and others are quoting the figure at $56 million, even more scary.

Cisco has unveiled a new TelePresence solution: a personal Cisco TelePresence system for use in individual offices.

For those not familiar with the product, Cisco TelePresence provides high-definition 1080p video, spatial audio, and a setup designed to link two physically separated rooms so they resemble a single conference room even though the two rooms may be on opposite sides of the world.

The Cisco TelePresence System 500 brings TelePresnce to a personal office, with a smaller form factor that retains all the same qualities of the large Cisco TelePresence systems. The product is being pitched as a providing “a lower-cost entry point for medium-sized businesses to experience telepresence in communication with partners, customers or suppliers.” Cisco’s idea of low priced: $33,900, with shipping from the third quarter of 2008.

Not as cool as the original, but still interesting.

Cisco has launched Cisco Edge Quest Tournament of Aces, a game designed to introduce the Cisco Aggregation Services Router (ASR) 1000 Series router “in a unique and fun way.”

The game is free to register, and the winner of the tournament (based on the highest score) wins $10,000 and an autographed Cisco ASR 1002, valued up to $35,000. Players guide and maneuver a game play craft, designed (I’m not making this up) to resemble a Cisco ASR 1000 router, “through various levels of increasing complexity while at the same time defending the network edge.”

The contest started Monday (May 5) and finished June 11. More info on the site here.
