Charlotte, NC – Caleb Taylor, or “hero” according to recent plaudits, is just a regular 5-year-old kid … who saved his mother’s life … while both of them were trapped in a moving car.

Caleb’s mom suffered a seizure at the wheel of the family car, and instead of panicking, he simply unbuckled his seat belt, crawled into the front seat, and steered the car to safety. What’s more, he shut the car off himself when his mom wouldn’t respond.

“I was asleep. I was taking a nap, and I just woke up,” Caleb told WSOC-TV. “Then I saw her not driving.”

He pulled the car to the side of the road, and recalls ”I unbuckled and turned the car off,” when she would not respond to him. He put the car in neutral and pulled the keys out of the ignition. He admits he was “pretty scared,” but ran for help.

Sandra Taylor, Caleb’s mom, is recovering at home after a passerby called 911.

Caleb’s father, Robert, said that his son responded to the situation exactly how he had been taught to.

“I’ve always told him if a car runs away, turn the ignition off. If something happens, turn the wheel, turn the ignition off,” he said, admitting that Caleb “knows how to start a car and hold a steering wheel.”

But still, ”it’s just a miracle of the Lord that he was there at the right place at the right time to give him the strength and the courage to know what to do” Robert said.

Robert told Caleb that he is his hero, and Caleb already has the perfect superhero name picked out for himself: Caleb Batman.

Drake played “rainmaker” at a strip club recently, hauling in $50,000 and showering the place with $1 bills.

Talk about making a statement.

TMZ has pics of rapper Drake showering a Charlotte strip club with $50,000 in cash in what proved to be a pretty “insane” scene. Word is, Drake hauled in a cardboard box filled with stacks of $1 bills and then released the Kraken on the dancers inside the Cameo Nightclub.

By the time Drake was done, the floor of the strip club was literally carpeted with $1 bills.

Another rapper named Bleu Davinci apparently dropped an additional $25,000. All in all, a good night to be a stripper working the pole at the Cameo.

So what’s with the statement, Drake? Well, there’s been a lot of talk flying around about whether Drake has any real “street cred” or if he’s just a poser from privilege.

Remember, Drake (or Aubrey Drake Graham) started his career in entertainment as an actor on Degrassi: The Next Generation, later rising to prominence as a recording artist. He spent most of his childhood living in middle-to-upper class neighborhoods and went to pretty wealthy schools.

But Drake makes no secret of his past and doesn’t really market himself as a “gangsta rapper” so much as an entertainer. In an interview with Complex, Drake said of his upbringing:

“My life is mine to remember. Right now, I feel like I’m telling you this to prove something to you, and that bothers the f*** out of me. Why does it matter? Do I make music you enjoy? Fine. What does it matter where I came from?

“Is it going to make you feel better to know that, ‘Oh man, I used to hang out with Yo Gotti and his manager in Memphis, before his manager got locked up, and I almost got shot in Memphis on New Years Eve, because we used to play around with guns and sh**.’ Does that make you feel better? Does that make me more official all of a sudden?”

Still, making it rain $50,000 in a strip club does seem a bit ostentatious. But we’ll let you decide, as always. Is Drake a poser?

Charlotte, NC – Joe Biden suffered from foot-in-mouth syndrome again during a campaign stop, gaffing ignobly while slamming Republican tax policies.

While campaigning for the Obama/Biden ticket in North Carolina, the Vice President inadvertently handed the Romney campaign a huge talking point a mere day before the presidential debates. Biden said that taxes for the rich would be slashed under a Romney/Ryan White House, which would terribly hurt the already-overburdened middle class, reports The Week.

“This is deadly earnest,” charged Biden. “How they can justify — how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that’s been buried the last four years. How in Lord’s name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts?”

Oops.

Of course, the Romney campaign wasted no time jumping all over the gaffe like a live grenade, notes Mediaite. “We agree,” GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said in response to the “buried” gaffe. “That means we need to stop digging by electing Mitt Romney the next president of the United States.”

“Of course the middle class has been buried,” continued Ryan. “They’re being buried by regulations, they’re being buried by taxes, they’re being buried by borrowing, they’re being buried by the Obama administration.”

To be fair, the Obama campaign has already issued a response clarifying Biden’s “buried” gaffe:

“As the vice president has been saying all year and again in his remarks today, the middle class was punished by the failed Bush policies that crashed our economy — and a vote for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan is a return to those failed policies. With more than five million private-sector jobs created since 2010, the vice president and President Obama will continue to help the middle class recover and move the nation forward.”

Paul Ryan, for his part, gave Joe Biden the benefit of the doubt in terms of what he expects from the debates. Instead of counting on Biden to “buried” gaffe his way through their face-off, Ryan is bringing his A-game because he believes Biden will too:

“I don’t think he will [gaffe]. You know he doesn’t do that in debates. The gaffes – he’s kind of legendary for this – that’s not in these kind of situations,” Ryan said on Fox News Sunday. “He’s a very disciplined person when he speaks in these kinds of situations. He doesn’t produce gaffes in these moments. Those are when he’s off the cuff.”

Charlotte, SC – Donte Jamar Sims is accused of making threats to kill President Obama on Twitter during the Democratic National Convention last week, the Huffington Post notes. On Tuesday, US Magistrate Judge David Cayer found probable cause to hold Sims, who is currently in jail awaiting trial.

The 21-year-old Charlotte, South Carolina man was detained after a Secret Service protective intelligence research specialist found a total of five threatening statements posted on Twitter, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Sims’ social networking account is registered under the user name, DestroyLeague_D, Secret Service agents exercised a warrant to get the account details.

One tweet from Donte Jamar Sims reads:

“Well Ima assassinate President Obama this evening! Gotta get this monkey off my chest while he’s in town.”

A separate tweet by the same user claims the Secret Service would be defenseless once the man aims his assault rifle at the head of the holder of America’s highest political office. The post was labeled with a DNC hashtag, meaning thousands of Democratic supporters were likely to see the text. Just minutes after this statement was published online, the user posted, “Plotting President Obama’s Murder.”

Special Agent Wayne Bourg questioned Sims at his home about the internet social networking account and the threatening posts. According to affidavit excerpts republished by the Charlotte Observer, the Charlotte resident smiled as the investigator read the threats aloud before admitting to publishing the text. He then went on to state that he hated Obama and that, although he was stoned on marijuana while composing the threats, he knew what he was doing was wrong. The incarcerated man also later said he was sorry for saying he wanted to murder the United States leader and wrote a letter of apology.

Charlotte, SC – A Rock Hill area woman found the boyfriend she ended a relationship with 12 years ago living in her attic. The single mother-of-five sent her two oldest sons and a nephew to discover the source of the thumping noises coming from the ceiling, thinking an animal or perhaps even a ghost had moved in uninvited. Instead of a furry rodent or a poltergeist, a 44-year-old ex-convict was found nestled next to the home’s heating unit.

The South Carolina nurse is being indentified as “Tracy” to protect her privacy from the old boyfriend, who remains on the loose. The former love had packed jackets and coats around the heating unit in an attempt to keep warm and cozy in the attic abode. Tracy told the Charlotte Observer that the last time she had seen the man was around a year ago when he had completed some odd jobs around her house. Tracy had also received jail house letters from her ex-boyfriend but notes she made it clear that the relationship was over. According to the homeowner, her unwelcome guest has both robbery and drug offenses on his record and once stole her truck.

The old beau allegedly used a ceiling air vent as a peep hole to spy on the Charlotte nurse from his crow’s nest in the attic, the Daily Mail reports. A series of odd sounds and loose ceiling fixtures scared the woman and her children, who still are unsure of how the ex-convict made his way inside the home. Police officers found multiple soft drink cups filled with urine and feces near the area where the former significant other was bedding down.  Law enforcement officers suspects the man had been secretly living in the home for weeks.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro may have made history last night as the first Latino to deliver a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention, but it was his daughter, 3-year-old Carina Victoria, who stole the show and won hearts all across the internet.

Castro delivered what has been called a “powerful” and “historic” speech on September 4th at the DNC in Charlotte, North Carolina, but his daughter is the one getting all of the attention in this morning’s media coverage. Carina Victoria watched her dad deliver the speech, and as dear old dad waxed poetic about his daughter, opportunity, and other things, she seemed more concerned with her appearance, rolling her eyes and fluffing her hair constantly.

“Today, my beautiful wife Erica and I are the proud parents of a three-year-old little girl, Carina Victoria, named after my grandmother,” the mayor said. “A couple of Mondays ago was her first day of pre-K. As we dropped her off, we walked out of the classroom, and I found myself whispering to her, as was once whispered to me, ‘Que dios te bendiga.’ ‘May God bless you,’” he said.

Cameras cut to little Carina Victoria at about this time, and it was clear that she was bored. She rolled her eyes and flipped her hair while Castro continued on with his emotional speech.

“She’s still young, and her dreams are far off yet, but I hope she’ll reach them,” he continued to a room full of laughter. “As a dad, I’m going to do my part, and I know she’ll do hers. But our responsibility as a nation is to come together and do our part, as one community, one United States of America, to ensure opportunity for all of our children,” he said.

Passengers aboard a US Airways flight from Charlotte to Charleston, W. Va., were given a little scare on Sunday when the plane’s pilot was forced to make an emergency landing.

The plane landed after airline crew heard a “loud and unsettling noise” only a short period of time after the flights 2:30 p.m. ESt takeoff.

The plane quickly turned around and landed at the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport one hour after it took off.

After landing all 44 US Airways passengers were placed on different flights to their final destinations.

At this time the airline is investigating the cause of the loud engine noise which is unknown at this time.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – Kurt Busch, the 2004 Sprint Cup champion exited racing limbo today with an announcement that he will drive the no. 51 for Phoenix Racing in 2012. The deal was made with Phoenix owner James Finch late last night, reportedly over “a beer and a handshake.”

Busch has been flirting with other organizations since his “mutual” split with with Penske Racing after an incident at the end of the 2011 season during which Busch lashed out against ESPN reporter Dr. Jerry Punch with all of our favorite four-letter words.

Phoenix owner James Finch was initially ambivalent of signing Busch in the wake of said incident, saying:

“He needs to simmer down a while. There are a lot of people that don’t like Kurt. He’s never done anything to me personally. He just needs to look in the mirror and see what the problem is.”

Finch also added that had Busch embarrassed him the way he embarrassed Penske Racing, “he would have gotten his ass beat on pit road.”

Busch’s one-year deal with Phoenix sees him taking over the seat of the no. 51 from Landon Cassill, who finished the 36-race schedule finishing 30th in points overall. Though the contract seems probationary in nature, Busch acknowledges the silver lining of a second chance. He hopes that with Phoenix Racing he will be able to rebuild his image and negotiate a better deal with a more elite racing organization in 2013.

Busch had this to say about his shot at redemption:

“For me, I want to prove I’m making the right changes. I’ve got to go and smile at the track, have fun with this building project.”
