In the wake of the wildly successful Cash for Clunkers program that saw nearly 800,000 older inefficent vehicles taken off American roads (including at least one Maserati BiTurbo), the U.S. government will be applying the same idea to household appliances in their new Cash For Refrigerators Rebate Program (aka the household appliances stimulus plan).

Starting October 15, appliance retailers will be giving a $50-$200 rebate on older inefficent appliances brought to the store and exchanged for newer, higher efficency units. So if you have your sights set on a new energy efficient washing machine that only uses 2 cups of water and less power than a 9 volt battery to wash 16 pairs of jeans and 5 king-size blankets at a time, bring in your old, rattling, leaky washer and you could get up to a $200 rebate on the new machine.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a recent statement:

“These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy.”

The Cash For Refrigerators Rebate Program will have different requirements for different States so check your local retailers first, but generally the new rebates will be offered on top of any existing discounts or rebates already offered on the appliances they sell.
