Are you ready to start rocking your next Commodore PC? The company on Wednesday announced that they are now taking $595 pre-orders for their upcoming C64 unit.

The new system provides customers with a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Atom D525 chip, while providing a NVIDIA ION 2 GPU. Also included is a 160GB hard drive with 2GB RAM. Essentially users are buying a netbook without the display or if you’d rather a desktop without the tower.

The company says the units will also offer premium features which includes upgrades for 2 more gigabytes RAM, a Blu-Ray drive and up to 1TB storage. Users can also grab 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.

If you don’t want a bulky “Retro” keyboard such as the one show above, the company has also introduced the VIC-Slim at $395, although specifics are not quite forthcoming.

Commodore promises to begin shipping pre-ordered units by “early June” 2011.

Eww, you got hacker in my Commodore 64 emulator!

Yes, it’s true: only a couple of months after it appeared on the Apps Store, Manomio’s C64 emulator for the iPhone has been yanked from the service. Apparently, some ne’er-do-goods managed to access the C64 BASIC programming system that came with the emulator at launch, and started coding … let’s say inappropriate things.

Developer Manomio did discover the loophole, but it was too late; by the time a new build had been submitted to Apple, the app had been dropped.

Manomio now wants to sit down with Apple and talk through the situation, and try and get its retro goodness back up as soon as possible. And so it should, for the app reached the gaming top 10 at one stage. Also, the world needs to know about Impossible Mission. Releasing a version without the BASIC system should do the trick.

Until that happens, I’d like to suggest an alternative.

Another day, another bad decision by Apple. The creator of an Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone has had his application rejected by Apple despite the emulator, and games being fully licensed and legal.

Developer Manomio’d Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone allows users to play classic C64 games and run Commodore 64 BASIC. Features include a SID sound emulation, auto-save, to continue exactly where you left off, realistic joystick and virtual C64 keyboard, portrait and landscape play, and vertical and fullscreen gaming.

Despite initially receiving positive feedback about the idea from Apple in Europe, the application was rejected on the basis that the app breaches the SDK clause prohibiting interpreted or executable code reports Touch Arcade. However, so do a range of existing applications, including a number of other emulators currently available in the app store.

We seriously hope that Apple relents on this one because it looks mighty fine, as the video below demonstrates.
