Celebrity blogging company Buzz Media has cut 20% of its workforce.

The cuts amount to around 15 employees, leaving a total of 75, and come only weeks after the company (previously known as Buzznet) raised a round of $12.5 million.

PaidContent reports that the company is winding back plans to launch new properties given the broader economic climate. The cuts affected product developers, engineers, design and editorial, but not the sales team. The company said it was still on track to be profitable by the end of 2009.

Fresh from a new round of $12.5 million, Buzz Media has landed the rights to the official Nicole Richie blog.

Richie will share exclusive videos, photos, and news about her daily life, House of Harlow 1960 jewelry line, as well as her Richie Madden Children’s Foundation on the new site according to PopCrunch. “I have always wanted my own online destination to share my experiences and I’m grateful to have this opportunity to connect with people in meaningful ways,” says Ritchie.

Along with its stable of popular celebrity news blogs, Buzz Media has also been carving out a niche as a host of official blogs from actual celebrities. The company currently hosts official blogs for two Kardashians, Britney Spears, Kendra Wilkinson and even the serially unemployed Mischa Barton. The irony of course is rich: on one hand, the company publishes salacious rumors about celebrities, and on the other gives those same celebrities a platform to respond. Nice work if you can get it.
