Daniel Radcliffe’s The Woman in Black took second at the box office this week with a take of $21 million, good enough to appease many critics who wondered how the movie star would fair with his first post-Potter film.

Filmed for a reported $13 million if numbers hold up that means Radcliffe’s first outing generated a profit during it’s first three days of wide release.

The movie managed to pull off decent ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic while Daniel’s star power pulled in audiences.

Woman in Black trailed only Chronicle which was shot for just $12 million and took in $22 million. Chronicle received great ratings from critics and fans which helped it along especially with younger audiences and men.

Continuing her slump was Drew Barrymore who’s Big Miracle which cost $40 million to produce brough in just $8.5 million. While not her best outing the inspiring whale story still performed better then her last two movies Going the Distance and Everybody’s Fine.

In good news for film makers Hollywood box-office take is already up by 33 percent over the same Super Bowl weekend period last year.

Here’s the full weekend top 10 box office take list:

Chronicle, $22 million

The Woman in Black, $21 million

The Grey, $9.5 million

Big Miracle, $8.5 million

Underworld Awakening, $5.6 million

One for the Money, $5.3 million

Red Tails, $5 million

The Descendants, $4.6 million

Man on a Ledge, $4.5 million

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, $3.9 million

It will be interesting to see which movies show an increase next weekend when not hindered by more than 100 million American’s staying at home on a Sunday to watch Super Bowl XLVI.

Did you head out to see Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman in Black? If you did go see the movie what did you think of it?

Liam Neeson’s “The Grey” topped this weekend’s box office with $20 million.

Neeson’s latest movie opened with better numbers than expected but still didn’t live up to the action star’s previous Winter releases. The Associated Press reports that Taken opened with $24.7 million and “Unknown” opened with $21.9 million. All three movies had a January-February release.

“The Grey” is only the second release from Open Roads, a newly formed company by Regal Entertainment and AMC. The success of “The Grey” should make it easier for Open Roads to get big funding in the future.

Jeff Bock, a box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations Co. told the Associated Press:

“Regal and AMC can go back to Hollywood and say, ‘See, these are the kinds of movies people want to see.’ It’s a real coup for them that they got Neeson for this role.”

Here’s the trailer for “The Grey.”

“Underworld: Awakenings,” took second with $12.5 million in its second weekending, bringing its total up to $45.1 million.

“One for the Money” took the third spot this weekend with $11.8 million ahead of “Red Tails” with $10.4 million and “Man the Ledge” with $8.4 million.

Oscar contenders also saw a boost this weekend. “The Descendants” and “Extremely Loud Incredibly Close” both saw big weekends while The Weinstein Company’s “The Artist” added 235 countries to bring in $3.3 million. “The Artist” is now showing on a modest 897 screens but the Oscar buzz is starting to generate ticket sales.

Erik Loomis, head of distribution for the Weinstein Co., said:

“It’s not the same type of picture as any other picture in the marketplace. Now that the nominations are out, we’re going to look to capitalize on it as best we can. … We’re being very, very meticulous with it. We’re not throwing it out there and grabbing every theater we can. At some point, we’ll open the floodgates on the movie, maybe closer to the awards.”

Have you gone to the movies lately?

“The Devil Inside” had a pretty good opening weekend. After its midnight debut, the low-budget horror movie had made $2 million. By the end of Friday it had grossed close to $17 million. Not bad for a movie with a less than a $1 million budget.

According to Reuters, “The Devil Inside” knocked “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” (which had a slightly bigger budget) out of the top spot at the box office this weekend with a $16.9 million haul.

Of course, not everyone is impressed with Paramount’s new low-budget horror movie. In fact, everyone pretty much hates it. ‘The Devil Inside” currently has a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with most critics wondering how long Hollywood will be able to ride the wave that started with “The Blair Witch Project.”

The New York Times writes:

“The scariest thing about “The Devil Inside” is that a major studio like Paramount Pictures, which is distributing it, may be able to squeeze more profit out of a tedious, tediously exhausted subgenre that was already creatively tapped out when “The Blair Witch Project”spooked audiences more than a decade ago…. Clearly, when a cheapie pickup like “Paranormal Activity,” which Paramount released a few years ago, turns into franchise gold, there’s just no stopping the banality.”

Here’s the trailer for “The Devil Inside.”

With “The Devil Inside” getting horrible reviews the momentum may not carry over to next weekend. But with $16 million in profits already in the bank, it doesn’t really have to.

Did you see “The Devil Inside?” Are you sick of these handheld horror movies? Or are you hoping for the sequel, “The Devil Insider.”

It was another big weekend for Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol as the movie once again grabbed the top spot with $31.3 million, bringing the movies domestic haul to just over $134.1 million. The $100 million mark also marked the first movie starring Tom Cruise to reach that level since 2006′s Mission Impossible III.

The movie debuted during the last weekend of 2011, during a time when Hollywood profits had slipped by 3.4% year-over-year, taking in $10.22 billion for the year.

According to Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian:

“This week was a pleasant surprise,” and “Last week, we were really pretty gloom and doom, but this final push at the end of the year was stronger than expected. It’s a good way to head into 2012, with at least a little bit of momentum at the box office.”

Even with the help of Mission Impossible ticket sales were slow in 2011 with a 4.2 percent slip in the number of tickets sold (1.28 billion) compared to 2010 sales figures.

It’s important to remember that the prior year was also buoyed by the massive success of Avatar which took in more than $2 billion worldwide or approximately a 20% equivalent of this years overall gross market.

2012 should be shaping up to be a better year as massive franchise movies are set to arrive including The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers and Madagascar among others. If the box office needs a big boost towards the end of the year Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will debut in December 2012.

Falling behind M.I. this past weekend was Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which raked in $22.1 million for a domestic total of $132.1 million followed by ”Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” which took in $18.3 million for a $94.6 million domestic haul.

Here are the Top 10 grossing movies at the box office for the weekend:

1. “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” $31.3 million.

2. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” $22.1 million.

3. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” $18.3 million.

4. “War Horse,” $16.9 million.

5. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” $16.3 million.

6. “We Bought a Zoo,” $14.3 million.

7. “The Adventures of Tintin,” $12 million.

8. “New Year’s Eve,” $6.7 million.

9. “The Darkest Hour,” $4.3 million.

If Hollywood.com estimates are correct Hollywood box office in 2011 declined by 4.5 percent from 2010, raking in $10.1 billion.

While the drop in box office totals could be attributed to a lack of blockbuster movies (Avatar in 2009 for example) it could also be the fault of Hollywood’s advertising practices which push more expensive 3D movies on customers during a cash strapped economy. In some areas cities charge as much to visit a theater in 3D as they charge to buy the same movie on DVD or Blu-ray just several months later.

One of the most likely culprits comes from digital streaming which has eaten up a growing chunk of the interactive video market. Company’s like Netflix charge a smaller price for movie rights which in turn means less revenue for studios.

In the meantime the gaming industry has also shifted more consumer spending its way, for example Modern Warfare 3 earned $400 million in one day while beating Avatar to the $1 billion gross mark by a full 24 hours. While games are more expensive then movies they also have a longer “shelf life” and have therefore become a favorite of many people who want the most bang for the buck.

At this time drawing any conclusive analysis from current numbers would be a guessing game, however with various blockbuster expected movies due out in 2012 including Men In Black 3 (MIB III), The Amazing Spiderman, The Avengers and others we may soon be able to determine if the 2011 downturn was simply a matter of bad movies released in unison.

Have you forgone movies recently because of their high price of admittance?

Hollywood box office numbers were revealed on Sunday and it was officially the worst earnings weekend of 2011 with no film surpassing even the $15 million mark.

The weekends number one film was New Year’s Eve which scraped together just $13.7 million despite a star studded cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry and Seth Meyers among others. The movie cost $56 million to produce and studio executives now hope that the movie will do increasingly better as Year Year’s Eve approaches.

In second place at the box office was the Jonah Hill vehicle The Sitter which took in just $10 million ($25 million to produce) after receive a C+ score from CinemaScore. The Sitter is a second miss in a row for Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green who’s last outing Your Highness scored just $21.6 million during it’s time in theaters.

In third place was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn which took in a fourth weekend total of $7.9 million for a total domestic take of $259.5 million so far.

Rounding out the top five was The Muppets with $7 millions (total of $65.2 million after three weekends) and Arthur Christmas with $6.6 million for a total 17 day take of $33.5 million, not the best outcome for a move that cost $98 million to animate.

When all was said and done the Top 20 movies at the North American box office grossed just $73.2 million, the worst weekend total of 2011.

Are you surprised by the lack of performance at the box office? With R-Rated movies and a lack of blockbusters I can’t say I’m surprised by the lack of interest in current released movies.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 has finished No. 1 at the box office for the third week in a row. The first part of Stephanie Meyers’ last book in the series managed to rake in another $16.9 million on the domestic market, remaining No. 1 after 17 days in wide release.

With nearly $17 million more in the bank Twilight’s newest offering has taken in $247.3 million in North America, still slight less than the $255.4 million New Moon raked in back in 2009.

When all was said and done taking number one wasn’t hard during a weekend that saw just $82 million in sales. The critic and fan raved about movie The Muppets was expected to take the top spot from Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart but despite excellent reviews it managed just $11.2 million, taking it’s total to $56.1 million since Thanksgiving.

There is some good news for Muppets fans, after debuting with a 65% adult fan base over the age of 18 it at least appears in part that this past weekends audience was younger, meaning a nice transition to a new generation of Muppets fans.

In other box office news Hugo fell to $7.6 million while Arthur Christmas had a take of just $7.4 million. Both of those movies were offered in 3-D which usually helps push up box office take because of the higher cost associated with 3D movies.

There may still be some good news for the $150 million Hugo production as Paramount Pictures has expanded the movie into 1,800 locations amid amazing critical reviews of the movie and increasing talk of awards season buzz.

Are you surprised that the critically panned Breaking Dawn has managed to hold onto the top spot for 3 weeks in a row?

Last weekend Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 destroyed it’s box office competitors with a $139.5 million haul and now for a second week in a row the movie has once again taken the top movie spot with $62.3 million.

Unlike last week when Breaking Dawn had zero competition (Happy Feet Two took in just $22 million) they actually saw a decent second place competitor in The Muppets which pulled in $42 million over the holiday weekend. The Muppets also managed to score the most critical success over the weekend with an average “A” rating according to research firm CinemaScore. The Muppets also cost a paltry $45 million to produce, just $5 million more than Twilight paid in combined salary to Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

Rounding out the top four spots was Arthur Christmas which added $17 million to the weekend box office while Hugo offered up another $15.4 million.

Hugo, based off the best-selling children’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret was the biggest loser of the weekend, the film cost a reported $150 million to produce with some estimates placing that total even higher at $170 million.

Did you head out to the theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to see a movie? Which film did you see and why?

Despite scathing reviews from various outlets The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 1 earned more than six times it’s nearest competitor this weekend with $139.5 million in domestic box office earnings.

That total makes the newest chapter in Stephanie Meyer’s book series the fifth biggest opening weekend movie of all time, yet it still fell short of the last installments $142.8 million weekend.

In second place was Happy Feet Two which took in just $22 million compared to a 2006 take of $41.6 million during the first week of release.

Rounding out the top five movies for the weekend were:

Immortals, $12.3 million; down 62% in its second weekend.

Jack and Jill, $12 million; also in its second weekend, down 52%.

Puss in Boots, $10.7 million in its fourth weekend.

Does it surprise you to learn that Twilight did so well at the box office despite awful reviews and an ending that much like the final two Harry Potter movies left fans wishing they would have just made one longer movie?

The Antonio Banderas voiced Puss in Boots took the top spot at the weekend box office raking in $34 million.

The Shrek spin-off held solid over the weekend to capture the best Halloween weekend opening ever previously held by Saw III which opened during the same time period with a take of $33.6 million in 2006. However the movie did fall short of some analyst expectations which pointed the movie at an expected opening of $40 million.

The movies earnings were helped along by 3D showing and iMAX screens which draw decent sized crowds at higher admission prices.

Puss in Boots was also helped along by decent reviews with RottenTomatoes critics scoring the movie with a solid 81% while fans gave the movie an average rating of 83%.

Also performing decent into it’s second week was Paranormal Activity 3 which brought in $18.5 million for a total take of $81.3 million.

The Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller In Time in the meantime opened with $12 million, meeting most analyst’s expectations after an average critic rating of just 36% although 60% of critics said they would recommend it.

Rounding out the top five was Footloose with $5.4 million and the Johnny Depp helmed The Rum Diary which brought in $5 million.

Final confirmed numbers for the weekend box office will be released on Monday, in the meantime do any of this weekends box office numbers surprise you?

Low budget thriller Paranormal Activity 3 managed to scare up an October opening weekend record over the last 3 days with the movie earning $54 million.

The newest installment of the horror flick was directed by Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.

Paranormal Activity 2 earned $40.7 million when it debuted in 2010 while the original movie which was filmed for just $15 million managed to scare up more than $100 million in ticket sales.

The former biggest opening weekend for an October movie was previously owned by Paramount’s Jackass 3D which earned $50.35 million.

Speaking about this weekends success Paramount Pictures President of Distribution Don Harris said:

“Ultimately, it gets back to why there’s still a theatrical business, why people still go to the movies. We want to laugh in a group, we want to be scared in a group, people like to cry in a group in the dark where nobody can see them crying. It’s all the reason movie theaters exist and this genre has always been front and center,” Don Harris, says Paramount’s President of Distribution.

The low budget flick saw a huge increase over last weekends winner Real Steel while trumping the 1984 remake of Footloose which managed just $10.8 million for a third place finish.

Are you surprised to learn that Paranormal Activity 3 did so well at the box office this weekend?

Harry Potter may have destroyed opening weekend box office records after a huge showing last week but the movie has already been unseated by another hero flick, Captain America: The First Avenger.

The comic book adaptation took in $65.8 million while showing on both 3D and traditional movie screens, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 brought in a still impressive second week take of $48.1 million, although that movie was down 72% over last week’s opening numbers.

Other notables include the low budget Friends With Benefits at $18.5 million, Transformers with$12 million after more than a month in theathers and Horrible Bosses, another low budget film which brought in $11.7 million.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 cast a spell on the Hollywood box office this weekend with a Friday opening day take of $92.1 million, the largest domestic opening total of all time.

Putting the new record in perspective, the former number one movie on opening day was The Twilight Saga: New Moon which brought in $72.2 million during opening day two years ago.

The final Harry Potter movie also brought in $75 million in international grosses in 57 countries on Friday, bringing the movies total take since premiering overseas on Wednesday to $157.5 million for a worldwide total in the ballpark of $250 million.

The movie particularly and not surprisingly played well in Great Britain where it took in $14.8 million, the biggest single day take in the country’s history.

The movie took in more during it’s opening day than four of the last six Potter films took in during their entire opening weekends.

When all is said and done the movie may take the top opening weekend box office which is currently held by The Dark Knight which earned $158.4 million.

The Deathly Hallows Part 2 owes part of it’s massive success to the number of 3D screens where the movie was shown since 3D movies require a higher admission price and therefore increase overall gross sales numbers.

The movie, which officially opened on Tuesday has taken in $162 million domestically, a drop from $200.1 million during the first five days of Revenge of the Fallen.”

Paramount Pictures is estimating a total take through the fourth of July totaling $180.9 million, while the movie internationally has already added $210 million for a total of $372 million to date.

In comparison 2009′s ”Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” took in $109 million during the first weekend of release and it beat out Spider-Man 2 which in 2004 set a 4th of July record at $88.2 million.

As previously reported the movie also opened to more IMAX screens than any other movie previously offered on the large format screens and broke that record with $22.5 million globally, the first time an IMAX movie has open over the $20 million mark.

Pixar Animation Studios pulled another rabbit of their box office hats this weekend when Cars 2 opened with a solid $68 million.

The movie fell in line with 2009′s UP which debuted at $68.1 million and 2008′s Wall-E which brought in $63.1 million.

Following in second place was the Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake led film Bad Teacher which took in a respectable $31 million for a movie that no special effects or high budget scenes outside of paying their high profile actors.

Cars 2 beat prerelease surveys which would the movies opening weekend at $55 million, while soft reviews also didn’t offer much hope for the film. Apparently those surveys were flawed and family’s didn’t care what critics had to say.

Exit polls shows that unlike Toy Story 3 which drew in large age groups, Cars 2 was fueled by family’s with children 12-years-old and under.

In other box office news Green Lantern lost 65% of it’s revenue to come in at $18.4 million, bringing the films domestic haul to $89.4 million in just 10 days.

Even with awful reviews The Hangover II easily ruled the box office weekend taking in $86.5 million according to the films production company Warner Bros.

The movie opened on Thursday with an opening day take of $31.6 million, a new opening day record for an R-rated comedy. The movie also managed an impressive $30 million on Friday.

Also opening with a solid take was the animated film Kung Fu Panda Fu which took in $48 million while featuring the voices of Jack Black and Angelina Jolie. The animated flick was well received at this years Cannes Films Festival. While still an impressive opening the movie earned $12.2 million less than the original which was released in 2008.

When all was said and done the movie business earned $270 million over the weekend, handily defeating the former Memorial Day record of $254.6 million set in 2007.

As expected Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides took the top spot at the box office this weekend earning $90 million in domestic sales.

The Johnny Depp led movie also took in an additional $256.3 million overseas, a record breaking international release that helped the $250 million movie bring in $346.4 million worldwide, making the movie the fourth biggest worldwide opening weekend flick of all time.

While the numbers are impressive Disney was projecting closer to $100 million in the U.S. and the movie was beat out by the last two Pirates movies which included $135.6 million for Dead Man’s Chest and $114.7 million for At World’s End.

Trailing far behind was last weeks opener Bridesmaids which took in $21.1 million for a total take of $58.9 million, not bad for a movie that only cost $32.5 million to produce.

Also holding strong was Thor which despite less than the movies $150 million budget being made back domestically has managed to earn $383 million worldwide.

Thor had a strong weekend taking the top box office spot ending May 8 with a total domestic haul of $66 million.

Also still showing life was week two contender Fast Five which managed to pull in another $35 million, bringing the movies international haul to more than $200 million.

Third place for the weekend went to Jumping the Broom with $13.5 million, followed by Something Borrowed with $13.4 million.

The animated feature Rio also remained strong, taking in $9.5 million after 4-weeks in wide releasing, bringing the movies total haul to $116.2 million and giving Rio the fifth best grossing spot after a month in theaters.

Box office takes should start to take off in the coming weeks as the Spring/Summer Blockbuster season begins and students are no longer stuck in classes all day.

I personally saw Fast Five and Thor this weekend and in my opinion they both deserved big box office draws.

Every time you turn around some movie exec or entertainment lobbyist is proclaiming how all the talk of free and evil people downloading illegal copies of movies is killing the movie business.

Yet it seems that just as quickly we hear stats after stats about how the current year has been one of the best. Blockbuster after blockbuster rolls through towns and cities making millions upon millions of dollars.

It turns out that 2009 is shaping up to be a year that will be breaking box office records that were set back in 2006. In a public relations release Sony Pictures announced that they have already passed the $1.634 billion mark.

The year has been driven by the success of a number of breakthrough hits in the international marketplace. The studio’s most recent blockbuster is 2012, from director Roland Emmerich, which opened this past weekend to more than $165 million internationally ($230.4 million worldwide) and has yet to open in such markets as Japan, where it is expected to perform solidly.

Also contributing to the overseas record is Columbia Pictures’ Angels & Demons, which opened in May and has taken in over $352 million in foreign markets. Sony Pictures Releasing International distributed Terminator Salvation in many overseas countries, taking in $220.6 million in SPRI’s territories. District 9 proved popular around the world, too, taking in $88 million overseas, including $67.7 million from SPRI territories. Columbia’s The Ugly Truth, a modestly budgeted comedy, took in more than $112 million from international audiences (and still going). Finally, Michael Jackson fans around the world have driven Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT to $155.2 million internationally so far and more than $222 million worldwide.

Talk about talking out of both sides of your mouth. On one hand we have the business being destroyed by evil downloaders but on the other they are making more money than in the history of the business.

One of the biggest arguments that the movie industry has against piracy is that it is killing their business since people are downloading all these illegal movies and not paying to see them in theaters. While they press hard on this front recent box office numbers push back – hard – against this argument.

This weekend alone with the movie Final Destination chalking up $28.3 million has proven to be one to set a new record by. In the US alone this past weekend saw total box-office receipts of $120 million which is up from $100 million from the same weekend last year.

A summer movie season led by The Dark Knight is at $3.99 Billion with a traditionally popular long weekend movie time to go, is set to beat last years summer movie season record of $4.02 Billion. this past weekend’s box office breaks down something like this

The Final Destination – $28.3 Million

Inglourious Basterds – $ 19.6 Million

Halloween II – $17.4 Million

District 9 – $10.7 Million

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – $8.0 Million

Julie and Julia – $7.4 Million

The Time Traveler’s Wife – $6.7 Million (and is rumored to have been picked up for a television series)

Shorts – $4.9 Million

Taking Woodstock – $3.8 Million

G-Force $2.8 Million

All this on an already lucrative and hit laden movie season and one has to really wonder just what damage was really done by all those nasty, terrible people downloading movies from the Internet?
