If you missed Transformers Dark of the Moon in theaters or you simply want to see the movie for a second time you’ll be able to pick up the movies Blu-Ray/DVD combo on September 30th while the 3D version is expected to arrive for 3D enabled phones at another time.

The movie earned $1.1 billion in worldwide box office, surpassing both of the first two movies in the series.

Buyers willing to wait an undisclosed amount of time will be able to pick up the deluxe Blu-Ray version if 3D isn’t their cup of tea.

According to director Michael Bay:

“For fans who can’t wait, the Blu-ray release in September will deliver an awesome ride with the movie in stunning 1080p high definition and a 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that was personally overseen by our phenomenal supervising sound mixer just for the Blu-ray.”

Bay went on to add:

“As you know, we put a lot of effort into the 3D experience for the theatrical release and I want to make sure we get it right for home viewing-and that process takes time. So stay tuned for an even more incredible release that will include the film on Blu-ray 3D and loads of bonus features.”

Buyers of the first Blu-Ray release will still receive 1080P high definition playback, English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD and English 4.1 Discreete Dolby Digital and English 2.0 Discrete Surround Dolby Digital tracks (A first for Paramount Home Entertainment).

The DVD in the combo pack is also featured in widescreen with Dolby Digital English 4.1 Surround and English 2.0 Discrete Surround.

If you’re new to the world of Transformers here’s a synopsis of the 3rd movie:

A mysterious event from Earth’s past threatens to ignite a war so big that the TRANSFORMERS™ alone will not be able to save the planet. Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and the AUTOBOTS™ must fight against the darkness to defend our world from the DECEPTICONS’™ all-consuming evil in the smash hit from director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg.

Will you be picking up Transformers Dark of the Moon right away or waiting for the deluxe and/or 3D Blu-Ray versions to arrive?

George Lucas’ epic space odyssey Star Wars is about to make its debut on Blu-ray for the first time, and fanatics couldn’t be more eager to pluck down $140 for the set that includes both the original and prequel trilogies.Lucas has become notorious for re-releasing his lightsaber-wielding series numerous times with various amounts of changes and additions to the original material throughout the years. Some changes have led many fans to scoff at the fact that they may never see Star Wars: A New Hope the way they remembered it as kids – you know, as plain-old Star Wars. Few would even charge Lucas with ruining his own property with the added special effects/images to the original films.

Fans will most undoubtedly usher in the Star Wars’ Blu-ray era with open arms and wallets, regardless of which side of the fence they reside on regarding Lucas’ mad-professor skills with the editing tools at Industrial Light & Magic. As for what changes Lucas has up his sleeve for the new Blu-ray editions, fans will most-likely be pleased with what has been revealed.

For starters, no changes have been made that affect the story this time around (i.e. Greedo shooting at Han Solo first at the Mos Eisley Cantina in the special edition). It appears each modification this time around is to address technical gaffs in the prequel series or in the subsequent editions of the original trilogy.

Take, for instance, the lack of vibrancy seen in the lightsabers once the original trilogy was transferred to DVD. For whatever reason, the glow-swords-of-awesomeness lacked the original flare and were out-right dull. That will not be the case in the new release; Lucas has brought back the lightsabers’ traditional vibrant colors and white-glowing core.

Other tweaks to the Blu-ray editions include digitally replacing the “younger” Yoda Muppet used in The Phantom Menace with a more recognizable, age-appropriate CGI version. Additionally, The Empire Strikes Back scene in which viewers mistakenly see the puppeteer bar controlling the Wompa’s arm as it strikes Luke Skywalker has been digitally corrected for the first time in 30 years.

Besides the digital corrections, Star Wars: The Complete Saga will contain over 40 hours of bonus material to surely whet the appetite of any member of Star Wars fandom. There are two discs in the set dedicated to deleted and alternative scenes. The crème de la crème of the Blu-ray collection may very well be the disc dedicated to making-of documentaries and spoofs of the galactic saga from other shows and movies.

The Blu-ray set (Full Trailer) is scheduled for release on September 16.

Want a chance to play Resistance 3 before it comes out this September? Well, I hope you like Battle: Los Angeles, then, because you’re going to need to pick it up on Blu-ray.

The standard Blu-ray copy of Battle: Los Angeles comes with a redeemable code for a 30 minute-long ‘hybrid’ demo of Resistance 3. If you want the movie just for the demo, be sure to pick up the standard version and not the two-disc combo, as it doesn’t include the demo.

If the thought of having to buy Battle: Los Angeles turns your stomach, there may be some hope you’ll still be able to play the demo. According to VG247, the disc states that the demo will be exclusive to the Blu-ray package ‘until April 18′ – meaning it’s possible we could see this up on the PlayStation Store sooner or later.

We’ll let you know if and when Sony confirms it.

via VG247

Sony has admitted PlayStation 3 owners will be waiting longer than expected for the update that allows 3D Blu-ray playback on the console. I’m devoid of sympathy, because if you can afford a PS3 and 3DTV, you frankly deserve a bit of suffering in your life. Nyaaaaaah, rich kids. Not that I’m bitter.

Anyway, at its IFA 2010 press event in Berlin today, the company admitted the system update is now due in October, rather than September.

I know, I know, it sucks because you’re dying to crack open your sealed copy of The Polar Express 3D, but dem the breaks, kids. On the bright side, there are still only about eight 3D Blu-ray movies available to buy, so, y’know, maybe, uh, get a bit more time in with WipEout HD?

The BDP5010 isn’t the best reviewed Blu-Ray player on the market, but honestly for under $70 it’s still better than buying a cheap Magnavox system and it will kick your DVD players butt.
CES is also about electronics, of course in between all that tech there are often a few cool displays setup just to wow the crowd, this year it’s Sony who has brought that “non-tech” flair to the show with a District 9 and Michael Jackson display.

On the District 9 side the photo above shows one of the blaster weapons from the movie, along with the movies Nano Fluid. The props look really plastic based when viewed from close up, however it’s still cool to see them sitting their against a showing of District 9 on blu-ray.

The other setup was the “This is it” Thriller costume designed by Zaldy. Obviously Michael never wore the costume in concert but either way it was cool to look at. Here’s the Thriller outfit display.

Cool displays, even if they have very little to do with technology.

The Viewsonic VOT550 PC Mini is a powerful desktop PC despite the devices compact size and unassuming appearance. The VOT550 features a 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo T660 processor and also features 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, Windows 7 and even a built-in Blu-Ray drive.

The mini PC also manages to show in six USB 2.0 ports and an S/PDIF port for an AV receiver which can add quick a punch to the overall package. Just like your standard laptop offering the tiny portable desktop also offers a Kensington lock port.

The desktop isn’t necessarily cheap at $949, but considering the small footprint it will leave on your desk and the features it packs I’d be willing to throw down close to a grand for one.
First off let me just say – Wow! a Canadian only program in a world where everything seems to be US-centric, will wonders never cease.

Okay, now that I have that off my chest on to the news (if you’re Canadian at least <snicker>). It seems that Twentieth Century Fox, MGM Home Entertainment and HMV have gotten together in order to <strike>con</strike> convince you to ditch those boring old DVDs littering your house and replace them with the hot Blu-ray movie titles.

The recycling program, as they term it, is called “Go Green with Blue” (talk about greenwashing) will give you $7.00 to use towards one of the current 250 Blu-ray movie titles that are available. The DVDs that are turned in and still usable are going to be donated to children’s hospitals and libraries this way everyone can get that warm and fuzzy feeling from hitting all the hot social soft spots.

Fox and MGM will also be using their Twitter account to promote new releases but also to let folks know about their 10/10/10 special days of the month. this little goodie deal means that when you bring in 10 DVDs and buy 10 Blu-ray discs you’ll also be given an extra $10 HMV gift card.

Here’s the complete list of Blu-ray titles eligible for the trade-in discount

New figures released show sales of Blu-ray movies are declining at a time where DVD sales figures are at best flat or worse in trouble after years of huge growth and massive profits. No one is calling the end of an era quite yet, but clearly something is going on in the movie industry, and we may be seeing the end of the DVD lead movie sales boom.

Is it an issue directly related to the economy or is it an issue of over consumption?

Variety reported in August that movie rentals are up, indicating that as economic conditions worsen (and this was pre the latest Wall Street crisis) people are more likely to rent a movie than buy one. And yet they note in the same paragraph:

However, sales of catalog and TV series on DVD are robust, suggesting that sagging DVD movie sales may be due to the maturity of the business — and to the quality of the titles.

How many DVD’s are enough? The industry saw saturation coming, and was hoping that Blu-ray would drive new sales based on the premise that people would want to have a copy of their favorite movies in HD. The problem being is that people haven’t bought in, and they are content with their current DVD libraries. There has been no rush to buy Blu-ray titles, and an aimed marketshare of 50% by the end of the year will be lucky to hit 10% instead. As Blu-ray players become cheaper, more people will buy Blu-ray movies, but only when buying new titles, not in most cases as replacements for their existing libraries.

But this doesn’t explain the DVD slump. Wired reports this month that movie execs are saying they’ve seen no downturn in the DVD business, and yet Variety the month before reports:

“None of the studios are making their marks,” an industry research analyst states. “Week to week, there have been double-digit declines.”

…Even the most bullish execs will concede this summer’s light DVD slate exacerbated declining new release fortunes. The ongoing deterioration is creating a ripple effect throughout the industry.

But even before the summer, new release sales were trending downward. According to analyst Tom Adams, “there was another decline, and a fairly substantial one at that,” for theatricals debuting on disc the first half of the year. He says the average overall perf was down 12% in first half, and he expects further declines through the end of the year, although he expects the sheer number of year-end releases to offset individual shortfalls.

So is there a downturn or not? Let’s take a middle line and say growth is flat, and as Variety notes, there are two factors at play, content and market maturity. Content is easy enough: Hollywood hasn’t had as many blockbusters as in previous years, and the flow on effect is lower sales once the movies make it to DVD. But maturity is the interesting factor. Has mass consumption and high sales delivered a market that can take less consumption because, to use a food cliche, it is full or close to it? DVD has been a huge success, and many have big libraries of movies, a brilliant marketing strategy that probably delivered beyond the studios wildest dreams. But how much is enough? As sales become flat, we see no increased desire to consume more. If sales are down, we see people content with their existing libraries, as we see with Blu-ray. They may still add to their collections, but in no where near the volume of years past.

The Digital Challenge

The movie industry is yet to face the same challenges we see in the music industry. There has been no mass uptake of digitally delivered content, even if we see increasing sales of both movies and TV shows from Apple’s iTunes store and others obsess with pirated content. Most people don’t have a digital content conduit in their loungerooms, so although I may rent a movie on my Apple TV this weekend, I am among a small few. But as we know, things are rapidly changing. The age of internet enabled televisions is upon us, and with mass market penetration, so to will consumption switch from physical media to digital media.

I would have bet that Blu-ray would have been the last great physical distribution medium, but it may never get to a point where it is. The successor to DVD will be digitial delivery, but the consumption argument stays the same.

People are not going to rush out and buy digital content (even if it’s HD) when they own the same title on DVD. An upsurge in rentals will help drive digital uptake, but a drop in actual sales presents the same issues to digital content as it does to Blu-ray and DVD. We’re not seeing a consumption shift in delivery, we are seeing a consumption shift based on scarcity, or lack there of to be precise. The challenge for the various companies looking to role out digital delivery in the coming years is how do they make the offering appealing when the end user may have past saturation point when consuming media.
