While most retail locations used Black Friday to push up their profits and get into the black (make money for the first time in the year), the executives at cafe & bake shop Tim Hortons tried a different approach, they gave money away to unsuspecting customers.

The food chain had employees walk through long lines and hand out $725 Visa gift cards to the 25th person person in line while the 24th and 26th people in line each walked away with $100.

The rest of the stores customers were not left empty handed, they were given a free donut just for stopping in.

According to the company they chose the $725 amount because a recent Gallup Poll showed that most holiday buyers would spend $725 on average for gifts.

According to Mike Meilleur Tim Hortons senior vice president of U.S. operations:

“It’s been a tough year for some people and this is just our way of saying ‘Thank You,’” and “We know that spending $1.50 on a coffee adds up, which is why we are grateful for those who come to Tim Hortons Cafe & Bake Shop every day.”

The gifts kicked off the company’s Holiday Helpers program which will include making surprise visits at area sporting events where the company will give away additional VISA gift cards and free products from their stores.

Do you think more company’s should follow Tim Horton’s lead and start handing out free gifts to customers in the spirit of the holiday season?

Retailers looking to get out of the red this past Thursday and Friday were generally in luck. A study of the weekends sales show that a record number of goods were purchased during the busiest shopping day of the year.

According to Bloomberg $11.4 billion was spent at retail stores on Friday night and morning, up by 6.6% compared to the same time last year and the largest one-year gain since 2007.

According to one retail expert:

“Those who have jobs have been willing to spend.”

Before Black Friday many analysts believed it would be a lousy year for retailers as consumer confidence hovered near record lows with the Consumer Comfort Index falling below minus 50 for nine of the last 10 weeks, the first time such a long stretch had been witnessed since the index was started 26-years-ago.

According to one analyst while consumer sentiment is extremely negative that isn’t the entire story of why people buy what they do.

Does this mean the U.S. economy is headed in the right direction? Not necessarily, as one analyst points out:

“Still, it’s just one day,” and “It remains to be seen whether consumers will sustain this behavior through the holiday shopping season.”

It will be interesting to see how much those numbers increase when Cyber Monday deals begin in just a few short hours from the time of this post.

Were you one of the 150 million people who headed out to stores on Thursday night and Friday morning to take advantage of Black Friday deals this year?

Okay, America, you can take a deep breath.

The great criminal mastermind of the 2011 holiday season- a woman that pepper sprayed twenty people at a California Walmart in a video game buying frenzy dubbed amusingly by my colleague James as a “competitive shopping incident”- has surrendered to local authorities. (Can we also say at this point that California needs to lay off the weed and the pepper spray already?) The woman in question remained unidentified for an entire day, as the viral story traveled across the globe and embarrassed the hell out of us as a cautionary tale about American consumerism. Despite the presence of many pepper sprayed victims and surveillance video, the woman- who remains unidentified publicly- was at large for most of the day and through most of last night as news outlets ceaselessly covered the tale of “Black Friday violence.” One maced victim described the melee to press:

“People started screaming, pulling and pushing each other, and then the whole area filled up with pepper spray.”

Officer Bruce Borihahn confirmed to press that the woman in question turned herself in at around 8:30 pm local time last night at the LAPD Devonshire station, and that more details are to come pending charges. He said:

“The investigation is still ongoing… We have several victims and witnesses that need to be interviewed to determine what appropriate actions need to be taken.”

In a separate incident, riots broke out among an assembled group of people who apparently really, really effing love waffles. The availability of $2 waffle makers in Little Rock, Arkansas set off the already excited Black Friday crowd gathered in that store.

Seriously people? Has America become so fat and obsessed with waffles that a Walmart riot is necessary when attempting to buy a $2 waffle maker.

A frenzy broke out in a Walmart near Little Rock, Arkansas on Black Friday when shoppers formed a riot over the possibility of picking up $2 waffle makers from the retail giants location.

If that isn’t bad enough one shopper at a Los Angeles Walmart pepper sprayed 20 shoppers over an Xbox 360 sale, while another person was shot outside a northern California Walmart.

Here’s the riot, just be warned there’s a good deal of People of Walmart type butt crack to be witnessed:

When will people realize that a $2 waffle maker and other super cheap products last about four seconds before breaking down.

Do you think this riot is one of the dumbest displays of consumerism to come about from this years various Black Friday sales events?

Once a year on black Friday, people flock to shopping mall parking lots across the country to take part in America’s favorite sport. Competitive shopping. Fully loaded with a belly of turkey and wine, deal seekers fight, claw, stampede, and occasionally pepper spray their opponents in order to win the opportunity to pay for things.

A woman at a Walmart in San Fernando Valley used mace against 20 other shoppers after a scuffle broke out on Thursday night. CBS reports that the incident occurred shortly after the Walmart opened for Black Friday at 10:20 pm.

One shopper said:

“People started screaming, pulling and pushing each other, and then the whole area filled up with pepper spray.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, the “competitive shopping” incident occurred in the video game aisle. Apparently the woman was trying to get a competitive edge on the other customers.

In the woman’s defense, Walmart was selling a blue Wii for less than $100. Clearly a good enough deal to justify an attack on fellow customers. I mean opponents.

Another customer said:

“I heard screaming and I heard yelling. Moments later, my throat stung. I was coughing really bad and watering up.”

The LA Times reports that despite the pepper-spray incident, the Black Friday sale at Wal-Mart continued. One customer, who arrived an hour after the pepper spray incident, went into the store with a “pepper spray schmepper spray attitude. The woman said:

“I don’t care. I’m still getting my TV. I’ve never seen Wal-Mart so crazy, but I guess it could have been worse.”

Next year, let’s keep “competitive shopping” where it belongs. On TV.

Did you attend a Black Friday sale? Did you have to fight for your deals?

In their ever increasing attempt to cannibalize the wallets of American consumers many retail chains throughout the United States will begin their “Black Friday” ads on Thanksgiving day or just seconds afterwards.

After a cool down in 2010 consumer spending many stories including Best Buy (midnight), Wal-Mart (some sales starting at 10pm) and Target (Midnight) will open their doors before the sleepiness of a turkey induced tryptophan slumber can even set in.

Black Friday as it’s commonly referred to is the point when stores “get out of the red (losses)” by accounting for nearly one-third of all annual sales in a matter of hours through the use of severely discounted goods. For example WalMart is selling a 42″ flat screen TV for just $199 (in limited supply).

Also set to open early are Old Navy, Kmart, Macy’s, Kohl’s and other stores who hope to get a jump start on the Black Friday buying public.

In responding to criticism that retailers are cannibalizing Thanksgiving Day Mike Vitelli, president, Americas and enterprise executive vice president of Best Buy tells Reuters:

“At the end of the day, we are trying to respond to what our customers want to do, and they are telling us that’s when they want to shop.”

During this years shopping season sales are expected to increase by 2.8 percent over 2010 numbers, but still falls short of 2010′s 5.2 percent gain for both online and offline retailers.

For customers who are looking to shop online Amazon.com is attempting to beat the WalMart rush by opening up their Black Friday sales at 9 p.m. the earliest we have seen a Black Thursday ad yet.

Regardless of the outcome it will be a busy time to be a shopper with 152 million people expected to head out to retail locations, 10.1 percent more people than last year when Black Friday ads started during their more traditional early morning hours, in some cases as early as 3am.

Do you plan to head out on “Black Thursday” for Black Friday sales?

Black Friday is beginning a lot earlier this year with many stores announcing that they will be open as early at 8pm on Thanksgiving Day and while that may sound crazy to many shoppers it’s a fact that TLC Extreme Couponer Joni Meyer-Crothers plans to take advantage of as efficiently as possible.

After sitting down with 25-people for a nice Thanksgiving dinner Joni will head out with 13-helpers on an 11-hour Black Friday shopping spree for her charity Miracle Christmas.

Her midnight shopping spree will send her husband Jamie to Game Stop with 2 friends while two others will be sent to Toys ‘R Us and 5 more helpers will be sent to Walmart, all with spreadsheets in hand to maximize their time at each location.

While all of her helpers out busy buying items Joni and her two daughters will be shopping at Kohl’s before the entire team of Black Friday shoppers meet up at J.C. Penney’s at which point they will all head to Target, Meijer, Learning Express and Costco. For a finale they will head to the mall to scout out other Black Friday deals that are too good to pass up.

Starting at midnight on Thanksgiving day the team hopes to end their shopping spree at 11am on November 25.

With the bought items benefitting four needy families it nice to see an extreme couponing mom who is doing more than fattening up her family with 70 bottles of mustard and 1000 cans of soda that happen to be on sale.

How do you plan to spend your Black Friday?

If you want to get a great deal, you can head on down to your local Walmart on Thanksgiving at 10 p.m., wait in line with hundreds of other people, then fight for your life as you make a mad dash for all the Doorbuster Black Friday deals at midnight. Or, you can sit on your couch and take advantage of the Cyber Monday Ads.

It’s your choice. And whatever option you choose to go with, you’re going to find great deals.

Dan de Grandpre, CEO and editor-in-chief of Dealnews.com, told MSNBC:

“Over the last year, Cyber Monday has caught up to Black Friday. As recently as three years ago, Black Friday, dominated by Big Store brands, was clearly better than smaller brand-focused and clothing-focused Cyber Monday, in terms of the number and quality of deals, as well as the number of participating retailers.

But that isn’t true today. The NPD Group, a worldwide leader for provider of reliable and comprehensive consumer and retail information for a wide range of industries, says that major retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and Target have all committed to providing equally as enticing deals on Cyber Monday.

Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at the NPD Group, said:

“These days, consumers don’t care whether you call it Black Friday or Cyber Monday… all they care about is the price. And retailers, increasingly having to grab consumers’ attention during Thanksgiving leisure time, are now so willing to be flexible and move these deal dates around, they don’t seem to care what you call these days either.”

According to the National Retail Federation, American consumers are shopping more and more online. According to the NRF, 36% of holiday shopping will be done online this year, compared to 32.7 percent in 2010. The NRF also says that the number of online shoppers has consistently grown over the last five years. In 2006, 60.7 million people shopped online on Cyber Monday. Last year, that number grew to 106.9 million.

How will you be doing your shopping this year? Will you try to get a door buster deal on Black Friday? Or are you going to peruse some Cyber Monday ads instead?

Apple on Monday posted the teaster for their Black Friday Sale and in their promo they promise that Apple buyers will “discover amazing iPad, iPod and Mac Gifts for everyone on your list.”

Much like last year Apple has started to show the promotional ad teaser on their international websites which takes the decidedly U.S. Black Friday sales date to the masses on November 25.

A recently survey found that iOS devices were the most sought after gifts by kids and teens which explains Apple’s excitement when it comes to advertising their gadgets for the holiday shopping season.

While the Apple Black Friday Ad doesn’t offer any special pricing information it’s expected that Apple will offer just modest discounts, for example in 2010 they offered $41 off the iPad, $101 off iMac and Macbook Pro systems and $11 off the iPod Nano.

Buyers can also expected to find various Apple peripherals up for grabs when the company drops their official Black Friday ad.

Will you be picking up Apple based products during Black Friday 2011?

Walmart’s Black Friday ad has revealed that the company plans to offer customers a chance to purchase a rare blue edition of the Nintendo Wii.

The Limited Edition console appears to be the cheaper Wii version which does not include GameCube support while offering the same blue coloring previously used just for an add-on Wiimote. Included with the console is one matching wiiMote and Nunchuk however a gaming bundle has not been announced.

With no games provided the limited edition console is selling for just $99.96, a price that makes sense when you consider that the two-game bundled systems currently sell for just $150. The sale was confirmed during a televised commercial during the CBS’ broadcast of the Titans vs. Falcons NFL football game.

Walmart has not announced whether the systems will continue to be made available after the November 25 sale date, although it’s very rare that any gaming console would be sold for just a one-day period.

The systems go on sale at 10:00PM on Thanksgiving day and will liking be sold out minutes later.

Will you be attempting to pick up a $99 Nintendo Wii in blue coloring with no Gamecube support?

Target plans to begin their Black Friday sales this year at midnight and while that may mean their customers won’t have to wake up at 3 in the morning to take part in the stores deals it also means some employees will have to come into work after a long day with the family, a fact that has led parking lot attendant Anthony Hardwick to fight against the new sales time.

As Hardwick tells Bloomberg he and fellow employees were forced to accept the holiday hours “because the economy is bad and so our employer has us over a barrel.”

Hardwick is scheduled for a 10 hour shift which starts on 11pm on Thursday which means he’ll have to go to bed in the early afternoon just so he’ll be awake and alert for his long shift.

In response to his company’s demands Hardwick has started a Change.org permission which is asking people to help “save Thanksgiving” by instead having Target stores around the nation open at 5am.

In the two weeks since Hardwick has started the petition it has received 85,000 signatures and now he fears that the company he stood up against may force him to resign.

In the meantime it isn’t just Target employees who have been told they will be reporting to work during the national holiday, Macy’s, Kohl’s, and Best Buy open at midnight while Toys ‘R’ Us, Kmart, Gap, and Old Navy stores plan to open even earlier on Thanksgiving day.

While I understand the importance of Black Friday sales in terms of yearly profits for many organizations I can’t help but think that the way these businesses are treating their employees is selfish. In terms of Target they simply can’t seem to get anything right lately.

Will you be heading out on or before midnight on Thanksgiving day to complete some or all of your holiday gift buying?

It’s that time again. The one day of the year when otherwise civilized human beings drive in to town at four in the morning and behave like rowdy, savage animals to sate their slavish need to consume, consume, CONSUME. But there’s really cheap stuff! Hurray!

As usual, there are some very sweet deals floating about for gamers if you know where to look, and you don’t have to leave your home for all of them. Here, I’ve rounded up 12 of the best gaming deals this Black Friday and Thanksgiving weekend, offers you’d be a fool to pass up. Starting with …

1. TRIALS HD
Trials HD is, for my money, still the best game available on Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade service. This brilliant physics-heavy motorbike game usually goes for 1200 Microsoft Points, but for this weekend will be down to 400 MSP, or about five bucks. The ‘Big Pack’, the game’s first downloadable batch of extra tracks, is also down to 240 MSP. A true bargain.

2. WORLD OF WARCRAFT
The core World of Warcraft game and expansion The Burning Crusade are $5 each this weekend only. The Wrath of the Lich King and the World of Warcraft Battle Chest will set you back $10 each. That’s a big old saving, and you get to form a fun marriage-wrecking habit. Go HERE for more info.

3. FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS
The epic follow-up to Fallout 3 is easily a 70 hour+ game, and while it’s buggy as hell, it’s as jaw-droppingly absorbing as ever. It’s at Kmart tomorrow for $34.99 (on PS3 and Xbox 360). If those run out, Amazon has it for $39.95 – keep a rads-infected eye on THIS PAGE for more info.

4. NINTENDO WII WITH WII SPORTS AND WII SPORTS RESORT
Don’t have a Wii yet? You should, because 2010 has been kind to Nintendo’s console, with the arrival of some cracking titles. Luckily for you, Best Buy is offering the bundle above for $169.99. This deal is just for tomorrow; expect them to go fast!

5. SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2
If you do manage to pick up that cheap Wii at Best Buy, put your foot on the gas and head for Target. Mario’s marvellous second Wii adventure is there for an irresistible $35. As these words demonstrate, it is obscenely brilliant.

6. STEAM’S ‘GIVE AND GET’ SALE
Too many bargains to mention here, but over the weekend there’ll be new deals appearing each day on Steam. Go HERE to check them out. Batman: Arkham Asylum is just over $10 today!

7. LIMITED EDITION NINTENDO DSi WITH MARIO PARTY + $30 COUPON
You’ll have to queue for it, but Meijer has an ace deal on a Limited Edition DSi (in red or green) with Mario Party and a $30 coupon … all for $150. It’s worth remembering, however, that the Nintendo 3DS will be out in North America in March.

8. ASSASSIN’S CREED: BROTHERHOOD
I’m yet to open my copy, but the critics are LOVING Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Kmart has the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions for a mere $39.99 – not bad for a game that’s only a week old!

9. GOLDENEYE 007
By some inexplicable miracle, the Wii revival of GoldenEye 007 actually turned out to be really bloody good. And now it’s really bloody reasonably cheap at $39.99, a price offered by both Amazon and Target.

10. KILLZONE 2
