Cesar Osuna impaled himself on a fence in a freak accident, ending a year-long manhunt for the man wanted in the beating death of 2-year-old Juan Felix.

Juan died in January 2011 after being taken to a hospital by Osuna, and an autopsy performed on the 2-year-old showed the cause of death as blunt force trauma. He suffered from multiple rib fractures, tearing of abdominal membranes, and a skull fracture, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.

Noemi Mendoza, Juan’s mother, was sentenced to six years in prison after she pleaded no contest to willful cruelty to a child, because she was accused of leaving her child in the custody of a dangerous person, since there were indications the boy had been abused before.

Osuna fled to Mexico following young Juan’s death, where he worked in construction. But unfortunately for Cesar Osuna, he was not home free. The criminal on the run touched a live wire while on the job, which caused him to fall and become impaled on a fence.

Delano police made a trip to Mexico where they met with federal police and identified Osuna’s body through the numerous tattoos adorning his body. It was not clear when he had died.

KERO-23 notes that Noemi Mendoza has two other boys, and is also pregnant with twins. She will be given prenatal care while in prison, and be allowed outside visits with an obstetrician/gynecologist, according to Nancy Kincaid, a California Correctional Health Care Services spokeswoman. Peter Kang, Mendoza’s attorney, noted that the family has had a long history with Child Protective Services.
