There is a natural curiosity about what our children look like before they are born. the most common way for us to visualize them as they are growing is through the pictures taken during any of the many ultrasounds an expectant mother might have during her pregnancy. The days of those blurry snaps of yet to be born children may be a thing of the past soon.

Thanks to Jorge Lopes, a Brazilian designer, you may soon be able to order up a 3 dimensional sculpture of that growing baby. Lopes has discovered a way to take all the data gathered during ultrasound and MRI exams and then run that data through a 3D printing method called rapid prototyping.

However not only expectant families are interested in this new way to physically visualize an unborn child. the doctors responsible for bringing those children into the world are also extremely interested.

But the invention has already attracted the attention of medical experts. “For doctors this is a fantastic development and it is absolutely unique,” said Stuart Campbell, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at King’s College London and a pioneer of the use of ultrasound diagnosis in the 1980s

Two days after champion ice-skater Jayne Soliman, 41, collapsed and died from a brain haemorrhage she gave birth to a baby girl named Aya Jayne. After being declared brain dead by the doctors her body was kept alive by a life support machine so that the baby could be born. Ms. Soliman’s death was totally unexpected and she appeared to be in good health.

It turns out though that she was suffering from a very aggressive brain tumour which ended up striking a major blood vessel. to save the live of the baby the doctors kept her alive and was given large doses of steroids to help the baby’s lings develop. Aya Jayne was delivered by Caesarean section at 2:34pm on January 9th and weighted only 2lb 1oz.

Her Egyptian-born husband, Mahmoud Soliman, 29, a business studies student, said: “In the space of 48 hours I have experienced joy at the birth of my child and endured torment over losing my wonderful wife. The two things she always wanted were a loving husband and a child. “I know she fought with all her might to keep our child alive, but it breaks my heart to know that she will never know Aya Jayne. I can’t believe my little daughter has survived. I look at her and she reminds me so much of her mother.”

Nicole Kidman told a Tennessee newspaper, that she loves Nashville and delivers meals on wheels in her spare time, which given the reviews of her most recent movie Australia, she might have a lot more time for.

“I love doing that because it’s just being part of a community,” she says. “That is what is important to both of us, feeling like we’re normal and part of a community.

She also said people don’t always “recognise” her. This is most probably because as Sharon Osbourne said, she has has so much botox, her forehead looks like a “flat schreen tv”.

The Australian press however are whipping themselves into a frenzy about “their Nicole” and her desire for her baby, Sunday Rose to have an “American accent”.

“I’m glad that she is able to say she’s born and bred in Nashville and Tennessee. That is really lovely. I think it’s very appropriate, considering her daddy. His whole life was headed here; from a little boy, he dreamed of coming here. For him to be able to say his baby girl was born here, I think is very special. I hope she has a Southern accent.”

Given the poor kid is called Sunday, she is going to need all the help she can get, so we say the Aussie press should give her a break.

So, why would you trust people lurking online to choose a name for your baby? Jason Morrison and his wife Ann are asking Internet users to choose the name for their child due this November.

Jason, a Google employee, has posted a poll on his blog, asking everyone to vote on what they should name their baby. The couple suggested 17 different names and is also allowing online visitors to suggest alternatives.

“My wife and I are expecting, and thus we have to pick a name for our new baby. We’ve perused baby name websites and tried the Freakonomics tactic of predicting popular names, but to be honest none of it was really working. As a Googler, though, the answer should have been obvious – let the Internet do it!” he writes in his blog.

Since he’s from Google, how about Larry or Sergey if the baby is a boy. Anyone out there who can suggest a name for a baby girl?
