Every now and again we witness a high tech computer peripheral that looks amazing, but many of those monitors skimp on true high tech features. It seems like manufacturers simply hope the aesthetic look will draw in customers. That’s not the case with the new line of Asus MS series LCD Monitors, not only do they look amazing, they deliver in terms of technological offerings.

The series which includes the MS246, MS236, MS227, MS226 and MS202 models includes full HD capabilities outputting at 1080P resolution with an impressive contrast ratio of 50,000:1 and a response time of 2ms.

The displays also feature Asus’ Video Intelligence technology and they are very thin at only 16.5mm, which means they’ll take up very little space on your desktop. The MS series also features touch sensitive LED controls for monitor control.

According to SlashGear the monitor sizes are as follows:

MS 246 is a 23.6-inch screen, the 236 is a 23-inch, the 226H is a 21.5-inch screen, the 227 is a 22-inch screen, and the 202N/D is a 20-inch unit.

No word yet on pricing although Asus does have an official MS Series page up, which makes us think more info will soon be available.

E-Readers are slowly becoming a regular part of out collection of tech gadgets with Amazon’s Kindle the current leader of the pack. That could change however as ASUS has plans to push out the cheapest e-book reader on the market, and a dual screen version at that.

From what ASUS president Jerry Shen is reported to have told the guys at engadget the Eee Reader will be the cheapest e-book reader with a possible price of $163.00. There will of course be a higher end model with possible extras like inbuilt 3G, a web browser and expandable storage. The real killer here though could be the dual screen forma factor

The dual screen form factor would enable users to read books as books were intended to be read, or they could use the secondary panel to surf the web, type on a virtual keyboard or whatever else ASUS dreams up.

Source: engadget – ASUS planning dual screen Eee Reader: world’s cheapest e-book reader

With the popularity of their EEE PC line growing on a daily basis, Asus president Jerry Shen has released plans to create an e-book reader, an offering that will use the popular EEE brand name.

With a market that requires very little resources to enter, Asus’ main goal will be establishing a loyal customer base and content delivery system for their eBook platform, which may be an easier process if they can convert some of their loyal EEE customers and deliver a quality eBook delivery system.

Mr. Shen also told Digitimes that the company will look to develop, market and launch the EEE-Book before the end of 2009, although that was his “early” release estimate.

We’ll post more information as it becomes available.

One of the growing concerns in the tech industry is the problems we face with e-waste. You know all those used up and old computers and other technological wonders we are constantly upgrading from and are full of all kinds of toxic wonders. Everything from arsenic to lead and mercury being leached into the ground and table water from improper disposal.

So many computer companies who don’t want to appear to be contributing to this growing mess are starting to paint themselves green. Well not literally painting themselves green but rather trying to produce products that are more ecologically responsible. Emilia Johansson; in a guest post at EcoGeek, took some time to put together a list of the top 5 green laptops on the market

Lenovo Thinkpad X301
The Lenovo Thinkpad X300 was one of only 15 notebooks to receive the EPEAT Gold certification, a sophisticated standard by which a device’s components pass evaluation in terms of eco-friendliness. Its successor, the X301 follows the same standards, but comes with faster and even more efficient components – all in a professional-looking and highly portable package.

For starters, this laptop features mercury-free LEDs in the display. Its low-voltage processor can stretch battery life with the aid of special efficiency software, and the package that the notebook comes in is now 90 percent recyclable. Additionally, the packaging doesn’t include any cadmium, lead or arsenic.

Toshiba Portégé A600
The Toshiba A600 is Gold EPEAT certified and Energy Star 4.0 compliant; it boasts a few green attributes that set it apart from other eco-friendly notebooks. For instance, the laptop uses a processor that runs on extremely low voltage, but processes at 1.4GHz.

With an LED backlit screen, the Toshiba Portégé A600 is thin (less than an inch) and weighs only 3.2 pounds. Toshiba also earned praise from environmental groups with a promise to cut down dramatically on the use of harmful chemicals in their PCs over the next several years.

HP 2730p Tablet
HP stepped into the green laptop market with the HP 2710p Tablet. This eco-friendly notebook’s claim to green fame is a longer battery life, estimated at around six hours. The laptop is Energy Star compliant and comes with low voltage Intel processors at speeds ranging from 1.2GHz to 1.6GHz.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE
This revolutionary laptop is one of the quaintest, greenest and most aesthetically pleasing notebooks on the market. The 1000HE model has a 10-inch screen and weighs just two pounds.

The super-efficient Atom processor uses no more than three watts and the intelligent “Super Hybrid Engine” can automatically sense changes in the power needs of the CPU and components, adjusting voltage and LCD brightness to maximize energy efficiency.

Apple MacBook Air
This gorgeous laptop is also one of the greenest available. The display on the MacBook Air is without arsenic or mercury and the case is made from recyclable aluminum.
While it does have a very powerful processor, which runs on approximately 14 watts, the laptop does qualify for the EnergyStar 4.0 certification. Apple also paid attention to the MacBook Air’s packaging, reducing the amount of potential waste by roughly half.

Well according to the folks at Geek.com it appears that Asus hasn’t learn any quality control lessons from that experience. It seems that a number of the their Eee Box models have been shipped with a virus hitching a ride on the hard drive.

The unwanted addition to the factory fresh computer is from the W32/Usbalex family which is triggered by a file called recycle.exe that sits on the D: drive. the moment you access the D: drive on an infected machine this recycle.exe is launched which then tries to infect the main C: drive. Additionally another worm called W32.Gammima.AG has been found on some machines.

The following models are believed to be the bearer of this wormy goodness

Model: EEEBOXB202-B UPC:610839761807

Model: EEEBOXB202-W UPC:610839761814

Model: EBXB202BLK/VW161DUPC: 610839530526

Model: EBXB202WHT/VW161D-W UPC: 610839531202

Model: EBXB202BLK/VK191T UPC: 610839547753

Now Asus has confirmed that some machines have been shipped that contain these additional goodies and in the press release about this incident (translated from Japanese) they have apologized for this happening. Granted apologies are good and they are doing what they can via their support site but come on guys two incidents like this is just unacceptable. I think Asus is going to have to do some serious work on their quality control but even still this isn’t going to be very helpful to their brand name.

The “instant-on” utility Splashtop will soon reach new masses of users, thanks to two big developments being revealed today. The first is a deal that’ll put it on all ASUS Eee Box B202 Nettop systems. San Jose-based DeviceVM, the program’s manufacturer, will announce the news this morning, The Inquisitr has learned.

The new Eee Box runs on an Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz processor with 1 GB of DD2 memory and Windows XP. DeviceVM has put together a customized version of Splashtop that’s being branded as Express Gate in the machines.

Splashtop functions as a pre-boot operating environment that lets you hit apps like browsers, e-mail, and other Web utilities right after you power up — without having to wait for your OS to boot. It’s been featured on other ASUS products in the past.

The second development: DeviceVM is preparing to announce a fresh round of funding — $15 million in Series C, led by New Enterprise Associates — to go along with the ASUS news. The company plans on using the money to expand to more markets around the world.
