Law enforcement site hacks are pretty common place these days and typical the response from those hacked agencies are either dry and boring as hell or there is a lot of chest beating about how they will hunt down those nasty hackers responsible and make them pay.

So when the Boston Police Department’s site became a victim of an Anonymous hack attack the last thing we expected in response was – humor; except that is exactly what BPD did, they treated the whole incident with a great sense of humor.

The hack which happened over a week ago and left the site down for the following week left visitors to the BPDNews.com with nothing to look at, and listen to, than a really bad YouTube video of the 90′s rapper KRS-One singing ‘Sound of da Police’.

However the official BPDNews.com is back up and instead of some rant against the hackers the Boston Police Department decided to have some fun with a video of their own. As Elaine Driscoll, Boston Police Department spokeswoman, said that they realized that they needed to make a statement about the hack but decided to go with a more light-hearted approach.

“It is a serious situation when something like that occurs, but that said, we’re looking for a light-hearted way to communicate with the community, apologize for the convenience and inform them of other ways to connect with us on social media.”

Personally I thought all the Occupy movement people had headed home to warmer  and more comfortable living conditions but it seems that there are still some hold outs, or at least there was until the police in Oakland decided they had had enough fun and games, at which point they started getting a little rough.

Okay a little rougher than normal but in the last couple of weeks over 300 Occupy Oakland protesters have found themselves being arrested. Needless to say this action also brought with it an increasing number of reports of police using excessive force.

It should be no surprise then that this abusive use of police power caught the attention of the hactivist group Anonymous, the unspoken police force of the Occupy movement, who decided that they needed to level the playing field by releasing the private information of several city officials who Anonymous believed played a part in the allowing of the police to use excessive force.

The following city officials had their date of birth, address, private phone number, salary, social media accounts posted to the web:

Mayor Jean Quan and her husband

City Administrator Deanna Santana

Police Chief Howard Jordan

City Attorney Barbara Parker

All city council members with the exception of one

It seems that Anonymous decided that the private information of City Council member Rebecca Kaplan didn’t need to be release due to her being a ‘true leader in the community’. They only revealed her public phone number.

As usual all the released information is available on PasteBin but the group also put out this video.

Oh boy you can be that this is going to go over really well but it seems that the ‘hactivist’ group Anonymous has managed to intercept a private conference call between four agents of the FBI and two members of an investigation team at Scotland Yard in Britain.

Not only did they managed to intercept the call but they have made it available for download and they have made it available as a stream on YouTube.

The call lasts for sixteen minutes which they accessed by entering in the conference call password when prompted to by the automated voice. The subject of the call was the arrest of Ryan Cleary and Jake Davis, two suspected members of the LULZsec hacking group, and the Met’s subsequent prosecution of the two men.

Sophos, a security software company, believes that Anonymous was able to do this due to the accessing of an officer’s email account and then using the information contained in an email, which they later posted to the web, to access the confidential conference call.

Anonymous, a hacker group that’s gained quite the buzz and reputation lately, denied that they will be taking down Facebook this weekend on January 28th. Rumors have been spiraling all over the Internet after a video surfaced on Youtube talking about taking down the social network.

The hacker group denied the rumor on their Twitter account. Lately, the group has went after a number of websites in relation to the SOPA and PIPA protests all across the Internet. Thankfully, SOPA was pulled from Congress and the vote for PIPA was delayed.

In regards to the fake video uploaded, here’s some details:

“An online war has begun between Anonymous, the people, and the government of the United States,” the video narrator says. “While SOPA and PIPA may be postponed from Congress, this does not guarantee that our Internet rights will be upheld.”

“The video goes on to say that taking down Facebook would be the “greatest Internet protest and first official cyber war.” The voice scoffs at the idea that Facebook is too big to destroy. “While it is true that Facebook has at least 60,000 servers, it is still possible to take it down.”

“The video also tells viewers that “there is no way you can get caught. Hundreds of thousands of us … will all be participating. They cannot take down that large of a group.”

When something is popular, some people tend to latch on and milk it for what’s worth, or cause problems. While this is one of many rumors, it’s definitely not the last.

Anonymous Not Shutting Down Facebook Despite Rumors is a post from: The Inquisitr

Visitors to the CBS.com website earlier today were met with nothing, that’s because the hacktivist group Anonymous managed to not only perform a DDoS attack on the network but actually hack the company’s website and delete all files.

Fortunately for CBS a backup was made for obvious (hacking) reasons and the company responded quickly by replacing the deleted website with all original files.

Visitors for a short period of time were met with an index page found within a single file and nothing more.

Attacked a short time afterwards was UniversalMusic.com which was also quickly restored from a backup and continued business as usual.

Anonymous has been attacking various industry websites since the take down of MegaUpload by Federal authorities. Sites attacked have included the DOJ, RIAA, MPAA, Universal, EMI, FBI and various other industry websites the hacking initiative believes has wronged their own personal choices.

In the meantime the actual hacking and deletion of a website falls squarely in new territory for Anonymous and showcases the groups efforts to more severely punish any corporate interests that infringe of their ability to download and stream illegal copies of copyrighted material.

Online hacktivist group Anonymous has begun hacking and taking down various US and Industry websites after popular file hosting site Megauploaded was shut down on Thursday by U.S. officials.

In the groups Twitter messages they touted the ability to take down websites from the U.S. Department of Justice, Universal Music, and the Motion Picture Association of America (Tweet pictured above).

The Anonymous Twitter account then goes on to note:

“The Largest Attack Ever by Anonymous – 5,635 People Confirmed Using #LOIC Bring Down Sites!”

LOIC refers to Low Orbit Ion Cannon, a tool Anonymous and its supports user to launch distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks on websites.

Later into the campaign Anonymous tweeted about their “largest attack ever.”

In IRC chats surrounding the groups activities include various website such as the:

Recording Industry of America (RIAA), the White House, the FBI, BMI.com, Copyright.com, Viacom, Anti-piracy.be/nl, Vivendi.fr, Hadopi.fr, and ChrisDodd.com (who now heads the RIAA).

In the meantime the arrival of SOPA and PIPA protesters have seemed to push hacktivists further then they have done in the past on such a scale, noting on the Anonymous account:

“Seems like some friendly ships are launching torpedos justice.gov as we speak. The site seems down to us! (via @AnonOpsSweden).”

While the group AnonOps adds:

“Tango down! universalmusic.com & justice.gov// #Megaupload.”

“Anonymous/Megaupload backlash update: http://RIAA.ORG is now Tango Down | #OpPayback #OpMegaupload #SOPA #PIPA,” another tweet from that account said.

There is still no official word from MegaUpload and it’s unknown as this time what will happen to user fees that were paid to use the service with a premium membership.

Yesterday I wrote about the movement forming on Reddit that plans on targeting US politicians that support SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and I commented in that post that I felt that hacktivist groups like Anonymous had for the most part been marginalized and in the larger ‘legitimate’ scheme of things weren’t really that effective.

I should clarify a little bit by saying that as much as groups like Anonymous are portrayed as a bunch of whiny kids sitting around in their mommy and daddy’s basements nothing could be further from the truth. Neither should they be counted out of any online movement because they are able to motivate and mobilize a very knowledgeable and experienced technical proficient group of people.

So when they come out like that have today announcing that they are going to start going after companies and big name people who are supporting SOPA you need to take note because they will be effective. While we might argue about the real value of their interceding and creating havoc the fact is they can be a very effective front line shock troop.

According to Twitter, the group claims to have access to Stratfor’s super secret client list which includes such names as the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, Goldman Sachs and the now defunct MF Global.

In an embarrassing turn of events for the Global Security Think Tank, “Anonymous” claims to have been able to obtain all the credit card data because Stratfor never bothered to encrypt it.  If this charge is true it will be a major embarrassment for the firm.

Stratfor sent an e-mail to all clients saying they had suspended all access to their servers until they could figure out if they had truly been hacked and what precautions they would have to take in order to rectify the problem.

Fox News in reporting the email as saying “We have reason to believe that the names of our corporate subscribers have been posted on other web sites, We are diligently investigating the extent to which subscriber information may have been obtained.”

“Anonymous” relayed through Twitter that it had many targets lined up for this week to celebrate the holidays.

According to Wikipedia “Anonymous (used as a mass noun) is a group, whose members are geographically spread around the world but connected through the Internet, initiating active civil disobedience, while attempting to maintain anonymity. Originating in 2003 on the imageboard 4chan, the term refers to the concept of many online community users simultaneously existing as an anarchic, chaotic, global brain. It is also generally considered to be a blanket term for members of certain Internet subcultures, a way to refer to the actions of people in an environment where their actual identities are not known.”

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, the Church of Scientology, and many music industry trade groups.

Stratfor Global Intelligence Victim of “Anonymous” Hackers is a post from: The Inquisitr

Hacking collective Anonymous announced on Tuesday that they have already begun using their considerable skills to ruin the life of Lt. John Pike, the UC Davis police officer who is currently on administrative leave after he was caught on eight separate videos pepper spraying a group of peaceful protesters.

The hackers started their campaign against Pike by releasing personal details about the officer including his cell phone number and home address. In speaking about their actions Anonymous says:

“We have no problem targeting police and releasing their information even if it puts them at risk because we want them to experience just a taste of the brutality and misery they serve us on an everyday basis.”

While Pike has won meritorious service awards at UC Davis he has also been named in a lawsuit by a former officer for using anti-gay slurs.

The Occupy protesters have always felt a connection to Guy Fawkes and today they will “remember remember the fifth of November” as protesters around the world celebrate Guy Fawkes Day.

At protests around the country and around the world protesters are donning the Guy Fawkes mask, made popular by the movie “V for Vendetta.”

But Guy Fawkes isn’t just some pop culture icon. People have been celebrating Guy Fawkes Day for the last four hundred years.

Guy Fawkes became an icon of dissidence and defiance after a failed plot to blow up parliament on November 5th, 1605.  The mask, which first hit pop culture thirty years ago in the graphic novel “V For Vendetta,” has been adopted by people like Julian Assange and the hacker group Anonymous.

CNN reports that Anonymous members and Occupy protesters in London are planning to march on parliament today wearing Guy Fawkes masks.

Malcolm, a member of hacker group Anonymous, said:

“The point of wearing the mask is to be able to go to a protest without fear of retribution or aggression from the establishment.”

But Guy Fawkes hasn’t always been a symbol of protest. Lewis Call, an assistant history professor in San Luis Obispo, said that Guy Fawkes image has drastically changed over the years.

Call told the Huffington Post:

“Gradually over the centuries, the meaning of Guy Fawkes has dramatically changed. The reputation of Guy Fawkes has been recuperated. Before he was originally seen as a terrorist trying to destroy England. Now he’s seen more as a freedom fighter, a fighter for individual liberty against an oppressive regime. The political meaning of that figure has transformed.”

Never mind Facebook.

Forget about Westboro Baptists.

They’re are all minor little irritants that hacker group anonymous takes on when they are bored and need to have a little bit of fun. However when anonymous gets serious they sure don’t mess around as evidenced by their most recently announced target.

It seems that an anonymous supporter in Mexico was kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel, and well, this isn’t sitting too well with the larger Anonymous group as a whole. In fact Anonymous has let it be known that if they Zetas Cartel doesn’t release their compatriot the hackavist group will start publishing the names, address, and other personal information of all the Zetas Cartel members as well as politicians, cops, and military members who are bought and paid for by the cartel.

They say everyone from taxi drivers to businesses that fronts for the cartel will be revealed on the web and as the spokesman for the group says in a recently posted Spanish speaking video – it won’t be hard as we already know who they are and where they are located.

As Mike Vigil, a retired head of international operations for the DEA said following this announcement – the Zetas Cartel needs to take Anonymous seriously because by publishing the names they identify the Zetas Cartel members to rivals and they will go after them.

It’ll be interesting to see if anything really will come of this as one group with no guns but the power of the web takes on some of the nastiest people on the planet to carry a gun, or three.

Anonymous tells Mexican cartel they are next is a post from: The Inquisitr

Reports about the size of crowds and the stamina of protesters at Wall Street in New York City vary, but several videos from the “Occupy Wall Street” protests have gone viral and some protesters allege that an overzealous NYPD has been forcefully restraining and even macing peaceful protesters.

Ten days in (the Wall Street protests began September 17th) it seems the movement is gaining steam rather than petering out, with 80 arrests made over the weekend by the NYPD at the site of the demonstrations in downtown Manhattan. 25-year-old Chelsea Elliott is one of the women in the video who is visibly corralled behind orange netting- a crowd control practice known as “kettling”- before, she says, police used mace or pepper spray on the women (who do not appear to be violent), causing them to shriek in pain. Elliott spoke to the New York Times about the incident, video of which has spread violently:

“Out of all the people they chose to spray, it was just me and three other girls,” she said Sunday in a telephone interview. “I’m not pushing against anybody, or trying to escape.”

Elliott adds:

“A cop in a white shirt — I think he’s a superior officer — just comes along and does these quick little spritzes of pepper spray in my and these three other girls’ eyes.”

NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne says that the pepper spray was used correctly, and only after protesters tried to prevent the barrier from going up- something Browne says was deliberately left out of the clip:

“Pepper spray was used once,” he added, “after individuals confronted officers and tried to prevent them from deploying a mesh barrier — something that was edited out or otherwise not captured in the video.”

Of the protesters arrested over the weekend, most are expected to be released from jail today.

With the “Arab Spring” protests of the past year or two serving as inspiration, Twitter and Facebook have been used to organize a large group of protestors on Wall Street and an “occupation” of Wall Street is currently underway.

Twitter is currently also being used as a platform for non-attendees to weigh in on the controversy, with a steady stream of “for” and “against” tweets either lauding the efforts or dismissing protesters as about to get bored and seek a Starbucks on their iPhones or “burn daddy’s money.” Web activist groups and collectives including The Other 98% (an organization lobbying for corporate and top 2% tax reforms and the like) and the formidable Anonymous have been linked with the protests- more of which are occurring in satellite locations.

One circulated statement urging participation said:

“On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people to flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.”

Currently, #takewallstreet has overtaken #occupywallst as a trending topic on the microblogging service and even celebrities are getting in on the fray. Roseanne Barr has tweeted on her feed, @therealroseanne, and rapper Lupe Fiasco posted:

If anybody needs me I’ll be on Wall St:  #iwilloccupy#occupywallstreet@OccupyWallSt@OccupyWallStNYC

Day of Rage Underway on Wall Street, Protestors Flood Downtown Manhattan is a post from: The Inquisitr

Anonymous is at it again, but this time the hacker collective is taking their online campaign to the real world, urging citizens in San Francisco to wear red on Monday evening at BART’s Civic Center Station.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit system was responsible for the denial of freedom of speech recently according to Anonymous members who posted:

“In the Bay Area, we’ve seen people gagged, and once more, Anonymous will attempt to show those engaging in the censorship what it feels like to be silenced.”

Anonymous has asked that the protest remain peaceful and that those participating carry video cameras to “record further abuses of power by the police and to legitimize the protest. The media will certainly spin this in an attempt to make our actions appear to be violent or somehow harmful to the citizenry at large.”

Jim Allison, a BART spokesman told the SFGate that his agency is aware of the project and that

“The safety of our customers is our No. 1 priority, and we’re going to do what we can to keep people safe,” while adding, “We’re just going to leave it at that.”

Allison would not say whether or not cellular service would once again be shut off at the station if protests occur, a fact in itself that puts passengers in danger as they lose the ability to contact emergency services.

If you are unfamiliar with the reason behind the original phone shutoff, a protest was planned on Thursday against the July 3 fatal shooting by BART police, however upon learning of those plans the organization turned off access to their underground cell phone numbers in downtown San Francisco.

After learning of the shutdown State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco noted:

“I am shocked that BART thinks they can use authoritarian control tactics,”  while he added, “BART’s decision was not only a gross violation of free speech rights; it was irresponsible and compromised public safety.”

According to Anonymous plans:

“We will be wearing ‘blood’ stained shirts for remembrance to the blood that is on the hands of the BART police.”

Hacking group Anonymous has announced that on November 5 they will destroy Facebook, “the medium of communication you all so dearly adore.”

Posted in a YouTube video the group says they will “kill” Facebook on Nov. 5 while claiming they are doing it for “Your own privacy”, while adding, “Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world.”

The group continues:

“Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your ‘privacy’ settings, and deleting your account is impossible,” while adding,  “One day you will look back on this and realize what we have done here is right.”

Apparently the groups plans don’t sit well with at least part of their group who have begun publicly distancing themselves from the “kill Facebook” campaign.

Facebook programmers vs. Anonymous hackers? This could easily turn into a pay per view event that could rival top UFC fights.

Hacker groups AntiSec and Anonymous have hacked nearly 70 law enforcement websites around the United States this week, claiming retaliation for last months arrest of more than a dozen hackers from around the world.

According to the group they have downloaded  ”a massive amount of confidential information that is sure to (embarrass), discredit, and incriminate police officers across the US.”

All together hackers from the collective gathered nearly 10 gigabtyes of information and posted that information online during the early hours of Saturday morning. information posted included officer emails, credit card numbers, and reported tips.

In true AntiSec, Anonymous fashion they also managed to humiliate victims of crimes, including the postings of teenage girls in swimsuits which were part of an ongoing investigation.

The groups work seems to have come mostly from Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Mississippi where a small media hosting company handles the hacked accounts.

According to Anonymous they posted the information to “demonstrate the inherently corrupt nature of law enforcement,” while one security analyst said it was nothing more than a lazy hacking attempt by the group since “It seems to me to be low-hanging fruit” based on lousy security by the hosting firm.

Anonymous, AntiSec, LulzSec and others continue to hack company’s, governmental agencies and others to “teach them a lesson” in the meantime the United States, UK and other countries are now considering hacking acts of terrorism, acts which could place every captured and convicted hacker behind bars for the rest of their lives with no chance of parole.

We know it’s called Untitled and it’s written by Anonymous (not that Anonymous), but all else is a mystery about a new book that’s creating a frick-ton of buzz in the literary world.

A brief description of the late fall release indicates little about the book, mainly mentioning that the book will be centered on a “controversial,” real-life person (thought to be Bernie Madoff):

“Untitled,” by Anonymous, was described as a 320-page, nonfiction, hardcover book with photos that will retail at $26.99. Order the book now, the publisher said, to ensure delivery by its November release date.

It is, the e-mail said, “the inside story of life with one of the most controversial figures of our time.”

Of course, the buzz surrounding the tome tends to be a bit hyperbolic- the New York Times identifies two likely authors for the book, one of whom won’t comment without publisher permission. Catherine Hooper and Laurie Sandell are thought to have written the mysterious title, the former being the “mysterious, dark haired fiancee” of Bernie Madoff’s son Andrew Madoff.

“Untitled” by Anonymous is due out smack in the middle of November, and one bookseller spoke to the NYT about the shadowy release:

“There’s nothing to guess with,” said Mark LaFramboise, a buyer for Politics and Prose, an independent store in Washington. “I can’t even get mad at it, I just think it’s so funny.”

It was only a matter of time before members of the various active hacking groups were brought to justice and in a major take down the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday announced that they have arrested 14 members of the hacker group Anonymous.

FBI agents stormed the domiciles of the hackers, arresting them for various acts including the attack on PayPal’s website which the group claimed to have initiated.

In related hacking arrests two individuals outside of the group were arrested on Tuesday in the U.S. and five others were taken into custody in Europe.

Arrests occurred in:

 Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico and Ohio.

FBI agents seized computers and other digital and paper records from the homes they raided.

Apart from the Paypal attack Anonymous has claimed hacks on the Motion Picture Association of America, the Church of Scientology, MasterCard and Visa.

The group is also suspected of being involved in cyber attacks against Fox News, Sony and the Arizona Department of Corrections among others.

When all was said and done 35 separate warrants were issued to the FBI and the group plans to continue their take down efforts against various hacking groups who target online businesses and governmental organizations.

Reports are just beginning to circulate as the blogosphere wakes up that a Fox News Twitter account has been embarrassingly hacked.

One thing no one seems to be mentioning is that the account that was hacked is @FoxNewsPolitics. The main @FoxNews account- the one with over 780,000 followers- has not been compromised. As for content, whoever hacked the account used it to extensively tweet about a spurious assassination of Barack Obama, as shown below in the screencaps.

Initial reports have speculated the hack could be linked to Anonymous as part of the #antisec push, but there’s no evidence as of yet that the information is credible. The @FoxNewsPolitics Twitter has just over 34,000 followers. As of 8:10 AM EST, the hack has not been cleared from the Fox feed, and the tweets reporting President Obama remain on the page.
