American Idol contestant Ethan Jones told a touching story this week about his dad who couldn’t be with him because of a stint in rehab but as it turns out Todd Jones wasn’t in rehab at the time of the audition but rather he was at a funeral.

Before the singing part of his audition (watch the video below) Ethan explained that he was in a band back in St. Louis with his dad but he had to leave to go into rehab.

After Steven Tyler, no stranger to addiction himself, heard about the boys story he said “I want to meet your father when he gets out.”

After the episode aired Ethan’s dad revealed that he wasn’t in rehab but was at the aforementioned funeral and had been out of rehab for the six months leading up and through the audition process.

In the meantime Todd Jones says he would love to meet Steven Tyler and hear about his own stories of addition which he believes would be “enlightening.”

It doesn’t take away all that much from the young man’s struggle as a singer and child of a father with an addictive personality but these type of “lies” don’t tend to sit well with American Idol voters.

Does Lauren Gray have the best female voice on “American Idol” so far this season? Jennifer Lopez thinks so. The 22-year old blew the judges away last night during the final audition episode and won herself a ticket to Hollywood.

Gray grew up singing in her father’s southern rock band but last night she decided to sing Adele’s “One and Only.” Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson, and Jenifer Lopez knew that they had a big talent within the first few seconds of her performance.

Lopez said:

“You’re one of the best female voices we’ve heard. I have to say absolutely 100% yes.”

When Jackson and Tyler agreed, Lauren said that it was the best thing that had ever happened to her. To which Lopez replied: “It won’t be the best thing ever…. Big things will happen for you.”

Tyler added:

“You can’t be taught how to sing that way. You can only learn it on your own and have some inside influence from past generations.”

Tonight on “American Idol,” Madonna will give a preview of her new video for her single Give Me All Your Luvin featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. This is Madonna’s first video in over three years.

Tonight will also be the last chance for “American Idol” hopefuls to win a ticket to Hollywood. Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez will be heading to St. Louis to find the last bits of talent for the singing competition.

Fox writes in a press release:

“In an AMERICAN IDOL exclusive, Madonna will world preview the video for her new single Give Me All Your Luvin, featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., during IDOL Thursday, Feb. 2 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.”

Give Me All Your Luvin was written by Madonna, Martin Solveig, Nicki MInaj, and M.I.A.. It’s the first single off of Madanoo’s new album, MDNA. Fox reports that the single will hit the radio the day after Madonna’s appearance on Idol. 

The video debut comes just a few days before Madonna heads to the Super Bowl to perform at halftime. 

Madonna’s MDNA will be her first album in five years.

Following his very public and surprisingly melodic Al Green rendition, President Obama has been invited to perform on American Idol by executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.

Obama took everyone by surprise last month when he crooned a line from Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’ at a fundraiser event (those who dwell beneath rocks can watch it below). The crowd lapped it up, and now Lythgoe wants to pull off the Idol celebrity booking of the decade and get Obama and Al Green to perform a duet.

Using the handle @dizzyfeet, Lythgoe tweeted an invite to the Commander-in-Chief on Tuesday:

“@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we’d love to invite you on to #AmericanIdol this Season for a duet with Al Green.”

One politician who won’t be getting an Idol offer is GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romney sung – if that’s the correct word – a verse from ‘America the Beautiful’ at a recent rally, and his vocals were pancake-flat. Lythgoe was decidedly unimpressed:

“If it were an election based on vocal talent @barackobama would beat Romney hands down. Mitt was very flat singing America the Beautiful.”

Admittedly an Obama appearance on Idol is a supremely unlikely occurrence, but it’s a fun idea, no?

Gokey, who finished third on season 8 of the popular reality TV singing competition, wed his fiancee, model Leyicet Peralta, in a small ceremony in Florida on Sunday, January 29. The pair exchanged their vows before 100 of their family and closest friends, People magazine reported. The theme of the wedding was “romance and love.”

“We are so thankful to have found each other and now be able to spend the rest of our lives together,” the couple, who announced their engagement in December, told People . “We pray our gratitude grows more every day because there is so much for us to do now.”

Fan favorite Gokey, 31, lost his first wife Sophia in 2008 when she died after undergoing a routine surgery for congenital heart disease.

Gokey and Peralta, 25, honored the memory of his Sophia by asking wedding attendees to gift donation to Sophia’s Heart, the children’s charity founded by Gokey.

As for the newlyweds, The Boot reports that they will be forced to put their honeymoon plans on hold as Daney is hosting the five-day Sophia’s Heart cruise on Feb. 2, with fellow former ‘American Idol’ contestant Matt Giraud also on board to join in entertaining the travelers.

American Idol found its first gimmick of the new season after Jane Carrey, daughter of Jim, ran the gauntlet of an Idol audition.

The 24-year-old appeared on Saturday’s edition of the talent show, and seemed to excite Jennifer Lopez an awful lot. Lopez worked with Jim Carrey on 1990 Hollywood non-hit In Living Color (I can’t even find a trailer to link to). The nails-on-a-chalkboard timbre of Lopez’s voice means I can’t bear to watch the video again to check, but my favorite exchange went something like this:

Lopez: “Oh my god, like I know Jim. We like worked together. Do you like remember me? Oh my god.”
Jane Carrey: “Er, I think I was two?”

Anyway, Carrey got through to the next round by belting out Bonnie Rait’s “Something To Talk About” with reasonable force. It wasn’t the most outstanding audition we’ll see this season, but she was pretty good in that bland American Idol way, so the judges liked her. Randy Jackson thought she had “PO-tential” while Jennifer Lopez screeched and croaked over everybody while saying she liked Jane. I think.

Also, hey, nice to see Jane isn’t another reality show Hollywood brat with a swollen sense of entitlement – despite her father being worth north of $150 million, she doesn’t front some crappy reality show. Nope, this mom still waits tables for a living, and seems pleasantly down-to-earth. So best of luck to her.

“American Idol” is still a ratings giant but it isn’t what it used to be. The popular talent show saw a big ratings downfall during the second episode of this year’s edition.

According to the NY Times, the second show’s ratings fell 27% compared to the same show last year. Compared to two years ago, American Idol’s ratings are down 44%.

“American Idol” has been the reigning champ of the 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. time slot but this Thursday it was almost beat by CBS comedy “The Big Bang Theory.” Both shows had a rating of 5.2 during Thursday night’s episode.

In terms of total viewers, “American Idol” brought in around 18 million viewers on Thursday. Last year, however, that number was close to 23 million.

“American Idol” is still a hit but it doesn’t pull the weight that it used to. “Idol” has been a great lead in for Fox to promote new shows in the 9 p.m. slot, but that isn’t necessarily true anymore. According to the Telegraph, Idol was at the top at 8 p.m., was tied with “The Big Bang Theory” at 8:30 and was in last place by the time the show ended at 9.

Wal-Mart is looking for the next hot product and they’re hoping that you have it. The super-retailer just launched “Get On The Shelf,” an “American Idol”-like contest for inventors.

CNN reports that Wal-Mart is typically very strict about its product selection. Venky Harinarayan, senior vice president of Wal-Mart’s global e-commerce unit, said:

“For a long time, the ability to get a product into a retail store was at the sole discretion of the store buyer. Today we are removing these barriers by giving anyone the chance to launch their product at Wal-Mart and reach millions of shoppers nationwide.”

People will get to vote for their favorite products on GetOnTheShelf.com. The three top items will earn a place on Wal-Mart shelves around the country. Wal-Mart announced the contest today but they have been gathering entries for months. Currently, an iPad pillow, boots for dogs, an auto pet dish, pills that promise to get rid of grey hair, beach crutches,  a soda bottle lock, and a holiday card display stand are fighting for shelf space.

Entrepreneurial hopefuls can pitch their products with a video until February 22nd. The first round of voting will happen between March 7th and April 4th. 10 finalist will be chosen and those products will be voted on from April 11th to April 24th. The top three products will be produced, shipped, and stocked at Wal-Marts around the country.

Last night, “American Idol” embarked on its 11th nationwide search for the next hot star. But tomorrow’s celebrity singer isn’t lurking in a long audition line. She’s screaming her 8-year-old head off on Youtube. Juliete’s “First Hardcore Song” is destined for the top of the charts.

So former American Idol stars Diana DeGarmo and Ace DeYoung are an item… and have been, for like two years now!

DeGarmo, 24, and Young, 31, met on the set of Idol, but their romance didn’t technically start there. The pair have opened up about their relationship- they live together- and Young says that it took until Idol was over and the pair were both performing in Hair on Broadway before they got together properly.

Young says that DeGarmo’s personality is basically and mainly why he fell in love with her- but if you’ve ever seen Hair, you know there’s an infamous nude scene… and that may have played a tiny role in getting the Idol stars to fall for each other. Young explains of the first time he saw DeGarmo in the buff:

“She said, ‘You’re not looking, right?’…And I was like, ‘Oh no, not at all.’ But I was looking, and I was like- sold.

“I was already interested in her as a person before I got to see her with no clothes on… but [that] sealed the deal.”

When Hair wrapped, Young moved out to Los Angeles for work, and DeGarmo eventually followed to find a place of her own. But after some hinting, he offered her a place to crash- and she never left. Young says he didn’t want her to, though:

“She came to California and kept saying, ‘I’m looking [at] apartments. And I was like, ‘Why don’t you just stay with me?’ The moment she got here, she realized I wasn’t going to let her get an apartment. It was like, either we’re doing this or we’re not. And thankfully, she was all in.”

In addition to sharing an abode, the reality TV couple also share their work, and DeGarmo describes their relationship as “beautiful.”

Steven Tyler- you know the guy who is like an ancient plesiosaur but has like a whole bunch of kids with groupies and has spent the last four decades wearing obscenely tight pants?

That guy is complaining about indecency. Like, not that people are calling his music indecent, or criticizing the shenanigans on the show he hosts, American Idol- like rockstar Steven Tyler would like it if people on the tee vee would comport themselves in a more dignified fashion, thank you very much. Oh, and his remarks are addressed to the Supreme Court, who are about to review a case about decency standards and broadcast TV.

It’s an interesting perspective because when I was a kid, Frank Zappa was leading a charge against censorship and all the big alt-rock bands of the day spoke out about it, so supporting censorship seems to me to be a very un-rock-n-roll thing to do. But Tyler says he is sick and tired of scantily clad women dancing across his television screen, and doesn’t wish to see people using coarse language to one another. He explains:

There has been a lot of talk as to whether American Idol host Ryan Seacrest will remain on the hit music competition program and if Fox entertainment executives have anything to say about it he’ll remain.

Speaking at the network’s TCA session on Sunday Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly says the network will work incredibly hard to keep Seacrast on their No. 1 rated show right alongside Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

According to Reilly:

“As we know it is a much harder job than meets the eye,” and “I think everyone has come to realize the value of Ryan Seacrest. It’s very hard to imagine [American Idol] without Ryan. We certainly want to keep him.”

Seacrest is currently under a $15 million annual contract that will expire at the end of the shows 11th season and multiple sources say Fox executives want Seacrest to take a pay cut, something Ryan will likely refuse as Jennifer Lopez is said to be earning $20 million for the new season.

While Reilly says the network is working hard to secure a new Ryan Seacrest hosting deal his own representatives have reportedly become frustrated with the entire process. According to one source:

“Fox has been doing nothing, they’e been sitting there. Until [Thursday] they hadn’t called Ryan.”

The ball truly does fall in the court of Ryan Seacreast as he is already a well sought after figure in Hollywood. Aside from his soon to expire Comcast NBAUniversal contract which sees him hosting a daily news shot, red-carpet events and other TV spots he is also a successful producer with his Ryan Seacrest productions creating top-rated shows including the Kardashian franchise and the upcoming Bravo show Shahs of Sunset. Ryan can also be heard on his syndicated radio show On Air With Ryan Seacrest.

Seacrest could potential play his soon to expire NBCUniversal contract off the Fox entertainment offer to weigh his options. It’s not often someone in Seacrest’s position (a show host) can so easily walk away from $10 to $15 million per year but for Ryan his options are quite endless. There’s even talks that Seacrest is being “groomed” to eventually take over for Today Show host Matt Lauer. NBC denies the Today Show rumor but in many ways it would make sense given Seacrest’s crossover appeal and industry connections.

So you think Ryan Seacrest will stay with American Idol and continue to build out his brand elsewhere at the same time. I mean you can literally hear him on the radio, watch him on TV and then watch him report about people on TV and the radio. He’s already everywhere, it’s just a matter of determining if he stayed everywhere all at one.

Scotty McCreery is starting his post American Idol life at the top of the charts. McCreery’s debut album, Clear As Day, shot up to the top of the Billboard’s chart today to the number one spot. McCreery is the first country artist to hit No. 1 with their first studio album, and at just 18, he is the youngest male artist to debut with a No. 1 album. McCreery’s debut album sold 197,000 copies.

Despite having the No. 1 album in the country, McCreery is still working to graduate high school and he plans on going to college.

McCreery told the Hollywood Reporter:

“I’ve got one more class to graduate, but I’m taking a full load because I plan on applying to college. School is important. It’s going to probably take me a few years extra [to get a degree] because I’ll be working and doing the singing thing, but we’re definitely heading that way.”

American Idol fans have had their doubts about the talent pool in recent years, but the 10 season of American Idol saw amazing performances from Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, and Haley Reinhart. Each of the American Idols earned a record contract at the end of the season. Alaina, released her debut album earlier this week. Alaina is expected to easily break into the top 200 next week.

Billboard reports that McCreery is the first American Idol contestant to have their debut album hit No. 1 since 2003 when Ruben Studdard’s “Soulful” hit the shelves.

American Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina is releasing her debut album, “Wildflower,” today, October 11th, 2011. The country singer, who is only 16-year-old, hopes that she can be a good role model as she starts her solo career.

Alaina told CMT News:

“I’m in the public eye now, and I want to represent someone who is a good person to look up to. I don’t want to be the young girl that people say, ‘Man, that Lauren Alaina girl, she’s got a lot of talent, but she’s lost her mind.’ I don’t ever want that to be me — ever.”

As for the new album, the former American Idol contestant hopes that her songs have a mass appeal.

Alaina writes on her website:

“I feel like it has a flavor for everybody. It’s a mixture of all different songs, so I hope it will appeal to all different kinds of people. There are fast songs for people who like up-tempos that you can dance to, and there are also tearjerkers for people who like slower ballads. I tried to get songs that are all a little different so that we could bring a fresh feel to each and every song.”

Apparently American Idol fans didn’t really care that their favorite show featured Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, they were tuning in to watch the shows format and emerging singers, something they didn’t do for the premiere week of Cowell’s new singing competition show X-Factor.

According to TV ratings company Nielsen the US debut of the show took in just 12.4 viewers far less than the 26.1 million viewers who tuned in to catch the season 10 premiere of American Idol.

In fact the show couldn’t even win the night with three shows ahead in the ratings; Modern Family (14.3 Million), Criminal Minds (14.1 million) and CSI (12.6 million).

Apparent the top prize of $5 million and the promise of Cowell and Adbul clashes simply weren’t enough for Idol fans to make the jump over to the new show.

Another pair bite the dust. Earlier today I reported that Diaz and Rodriguez have called it quits on their two year headline producing relationship and now it turns out Pia Toscano and Mark Ballas have also decided to call things off.

Pia, a former American Idol contestant and Mark Ballas, one of the star dancers on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars are rumored to have called it a quits after dating for just over one year.

According to  E! News ”Pia, 22, and 25-year-old Mark have quietly split.” 

A source close to the couple went on to tell PEOPLE:

“They both decided with everything going on that they couldn’t give each other what would be fair,” and “They mutually decided this.”

A person in the know at Mark’s camp says he’s recovering from the split the best way he knows how, by throwing all his training energy behind former Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari who is competing with Ballas on this seasons Dancing with the Stars. 

Pia’s people are not commenting on the split and only released the following publicity inducing response:

“She’s hard at work on her new album and can’t wait for her fans to hear it…”

So there you have it, Mark heads back to into his dance studio, Pia heads back into her recording study and all is right with the world.

While Jennifer has yet to confirm the deal herself, Lythgoe went “On-Air with Ryan Seacrest” this Wednesday to say that Lopez would definitely be returning for the upcoming season of FOX’s hit musical reality TV show.

“I believe we’re still waiting for the official announcements, but I’m delighted to say that all three judges, along with the brilliant host of ‘American Idol,’ is back for the next season,” Lythgoe revealed.

Lopez’s decision to rejoin has been the source of much speculation in Hollywood ever since she told BBC news earlier this summer that she was undecided, adding:

“I had an amazing time doing it and I loved it, but I have a lot of other things happening, and it’s going to come down to making a choice of really what I want to do for the next year.”

In addition to her “Idol” judging role, Lopez – who, along with Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler, made her AI debut last year following the departure of Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara Dioguardi – will be working with estranged husband Marc Anthony and Simon Fuller’s XIX and Endemol production teams on the music talent show “Q’Viva!,” which is slated to begin shooting in the fall.

American Idol is scheduled to hit TVs across the country this January, when it will kick off its 11th season.

Fantasia hasn’t had the most clean-cut post-idol experience. After a rocky run on Broadway following her AI success, the singer briefly hit the spotlight again… because her home down south went into foreclosure. Then Barrino was in the news again, this time for allegedly stealing someone’s husband and making a sex tape. It seemed, for a bit, that the drama llama may have followed Fantasia home.

Barrino stopped short of announcing that the father of her child is the still married Antwaun Cook- the boyfriend she was spotted vacationing with in Barbados back in June- when she made the following statement Sunday:

“You are the first person that I share this news with, and I share this with you because I can relate to you… And for a while I walked around figuring out ‘What will they say and what will they think about me?’ But now I tell you I don’t live my life for folk.”

…which is true- but an interesting statement in light of the fact she’d been spotted with Cook on vacation just a few weeks back, and his divorce is not yet final. Hmmm… do you think Fantasia’s babydaddy is Cook? Have you judged her for her possible role in the demise of his marriage?

Jennifer Lopez could be back on American Idol for at least one more season, if sources cited by the Wall Street Journal about the star’s return are correct regarding the direction of negotiations.

It’s rumored that Lopez is holding out for top Idol judge Simon Cowell’s higher level of compensation, which would bring her hourly rate on the show up over $600K. Flak for Lopez declined comment on the ongoing negotiations, and the production company for American Idol vaguely acknowledged the wrangling:

Cécile Frot-Coutaz, chief executive officer at FremantleMedia North America, which produces “American Idol,” declined to comment on the negotiations. But she said, “We’re in good shape. No worries. No dark clouds on the horizon.”

Lopez is currently pitching a Latin version of Idol called ¡Q’viva! The Chosen with newly-minted third ex-husband Marc Anthony as their divorce moves forward. A spokesperson for XIX Entertainment, the company of pop svengali Simon Fuller- who is producing the show with Lopez and Anthony- says the development of the show will continue despite the disintegration of Lopez and Anthony’s relationship.

American Idol as we already knew will return for an 11th season and in the drivers seats once again is season 10 judges Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and AI alum Randy Jackson.

The news was confirmed on Wednesday by a Fox rep, although exact details, such as pay for the new season have not been revealed.

Ryan Seacrest had secured his own contract several seasons ago which means the only remaining hold out is Jennifer Lopez, although Randy Jackson mentioned on Lopez Tonight several months ago that she would be back to judge.

When speaking to BBC’s Radio 1 earlier in the month though Jennifer said:

Even if Jennifer doesn’t return, Steven Tyler will say enough goofy things to keep our interest piqued and if the show can continue to find unique talent as they did this past season it could continue to be the ratings juggernaut it has proven to be over a decade of seasons.
