Virgin America, a popular flight choice for those in the US, has named a plan in honor of the late and great Steve Jobs. On October 5th, 2011, Steve passed away and left behind a wonderful legacy of innovation and passion.

Through his leadership, he led Apple from a failing company, to the most valuable company in the World. Richard Branson who runs Virgin, has always been inspired by Steve’s work and through an internal naming competition, one of the employees suggested one of his many famous quotes.

Via MSNBC:

“Your inner geek will smile the next time you board a Virgin America flight. After all, there’s a chance that you’ll be stepping onto a plane that is named in honor of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.”

“Virgin America’s Abby Lunardini explained to me that one of the airline’s jets — an Airbus A320 — has “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” stenciled on its nose as the result of an internal plane naming competition which was run in the fall of 2011. At that time, the aircraft name was submitted ”as a tribute” to Jobs by one of Virgin America’s employees. The plane entered service late last year.”

Even with the competition in the airline industry and losses, the company is still pushing forward. Higher fuel costs are attributed to the decrease in profits. Despite that, Richard Branson’s vision for the airline is to provide a great value with style, comfort, and solid customer service.

People are apparently happy as their number of passengers recently rose 38%.

Have you ever flown Virgin America or see yourself doing so?

Europe’s biggest airline Ryanair is preparing to make their customers flights even more uncomfortable by removing bathrooms from each of their aircraft.

According to the company they are asking Boeing to recertify their airplanes after they have removed two of three bathrooms while adding six more seats.

All Ryanair flights use the Boeing 737-800 aircraft which holds 189 seats and the company hopes to add the new seats to accommodate even more passengers which ironically would lead to more use of bathroom facilities.

It was previously reported that Ryanair wanted to charge customers for bathroom use but recently they changed their mind and decided to instead remove the facilities all together.

According to Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary:

“We very rarely use all three toilets on board our aircraft anyway,” while he adds that the move “would fundamentally lower air fares by about 5% for all passengers.”

It should be noted that most Ryanair flights are short range, typically lasting no more than 4 hours and 25 minutes.

Boeing has not yet decided whether they will recertify the aircraft with the new setup. In the meantime I typically have to wait 20 minutes to use the laboratories available on planes with three bathrooms, perhaps people just urinate less in Europe. Keep in mind this is the same CEO who wanted to get rid of co-pilots to cut costs.

Would you be willing to pay 5% more for a flight if extra bathrooms were provided or does a price discount with only one toilet sound like a good deal?

I personally want to know where the remaining bathroom will be placed, I’m assuming in first class where only one bathroom is provided in the first place.

Flying is one of the backbones of our world. To be able to get from point to another as quickly as possible is an integral part of business, and leisure. This means we also need a lot of airports in all kinds of places. Popular Mechanics recently put together a list of the world’s 18 strangest airports.

Now being the strangest also means that some of these are also some pretty hair-raising place to land and take-off from. That is what this list of six is all about.

Gibraltar Airport

As you can see from the photograph the airport runway is intersected with one of the busiest roads on the island, and we thought train crossings were hazardous.

Congonhas Airport – Brazil

Yes that is the city center of Sao Paulo just five miles away from the airport. The only advantage here is the short travel distance to get you flight out.

Courchevel International Airport – France

Sure it may seem like a fairly ordinary airport – except for the mountains all around it and the big hill in the middle of the runway.

Princess Juliana International Airport – Saint Maarten

This landing is almost an obstacle course that includes a much used beach, high fence and a road.

Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport – Netherlands Antilles

I think the fact of the ocean all around it and only a 1,300 foot long runway make this one self-explanitory.

Toncontin International Airport – Honduras

A 7,000 foot long runway in the middle of valley and within spitting distance of the country’s capital city. Yup this would be hair-raising to say the least

I am a dog lover but even this is stretching things a little too far if you ask me. The idea of being willing to rent out the whole business section of a plane for a four hour flight just so you favorite pooch won’t suffer the trauma and anguish of flying cargo is just plain silly. It would seem though that for an Israeli it was a small price to pay to have her dog next to her for the flight from Paris to Israeli.

The woman identified as Rivka, told the Channel 10 television network Wednesday afternoon, she could not bear the thought of her eight-year-old boxer dog being placed in a cage in the cargo hold of the plane for the duration of the flight.

"He is my baby, and I asked El Al to rent out the business section and paid $32,000 to ensure my dog, Or (light in Hebrew), would be able to sit next to me for the entire flight," she told the television.

I wonder if It’s A Dog’s Life was the in-flight movie?

In the United States on any given day there are approximately 87,000 flights criss-crossing the country and the world. Generally the feeling is that for the most part flying is fairly safe but if the information out of this year’s Defcon hacker conference is true we might want to think twice about that assumption.

While Righter Kunkel was careful not to give the specifics he did show how easy it is to affect air traffic control, jam radar, or even stop planes from taking off. It takes a little bit of prep work in order to pull anything like this off but once you have gotten yourself a fake id, a doctor’s aviation certificate, and a student pilot card you can log into the FAA’s pilot registration site.

This is where the fun starts because at this point you can submit your flight plans which then will have the system treat you as a trusted user. Now this is the theory part but if you were to submit an extremely large number of flight plans you could overwhelm the system.

…. essentially a denial of service attack. That could bog down the whole system. Kunkel said the FAA itself has said that some of its networks are improperly linked. He found that one system uses Telnet. Kunkel said he wouldn’t talk about the significance of that fact, but the implication was it could be used to launch a cyber attack.

The FAA found in its own report, issued in May, that there were 763 vulnerabilities in 70 web applications that are used internally at the FAA. It’s a damning report, Kunkel said, but the FAA says it is working on fixing some problems, including some fixes that will go into place by February, 2010.

Not exactly re-assuring is it.

I realize that home protection is a pretty big business with everything from bars on the windows to lockdown safe rooms. There are companies that will sell you the most modern of security alarm systems that are monitored 24 hours days just so you can feel a little safer.

However I don’t think that any of those ideas come even close to having a great big huge tank sitting in your garage for all the world to see. Never mind the AK-47 you have hiding behind the front door or the claymore mines littering the hallways. These all pale in comparison to that big gun pointing in your direction.

Now if a tank isn’t up your alley you could always go the route of having a fully fueled jet plane to chase their asses with.

Of course if you are more the type of using a vicious animal to keep unwanted guests away you could try this option out for size

No of course between you an me we both know that none of these are real but rather some clever artwork done on weather resistant tarps that you can attached to the front of your garage, all courtesy of Style-Your-Garage.com

Gotta admit though they could be kind of fun to hang up and see the reactions of people as they walk by.
