An Airbus A330-200 aircraft operated by Jetstar, the fully owned budget subsidiary of Australian airline Qantas, has made an emergency landing in Guam after the aircraft caught fire.

JQ20 was on route to the Gold Coast (Australia) from Osaka, Japan when the pilots spotted flames in the right hand side cockpit window. The crew extinguished the flames with an onboard fire extinguisher, and issued a may-day call.

The plane, carrying 202 people including the crew, landed safely at Guam International Airport at 2:20am local time Thursday morning.

At a press conference in Christchurch, New Zealand, Jetstar’s CEO said that the aircraft was two years old, and had been serviced by Qantas Engineering in Australia. The last point is notable locally given previous suggestions that Qantas aircraft with problems in the past had received sub-standard servicing in Asia. He also noted that aircraft had automatically notified the airline that there had been a failure in the on-board heating systems immediately prior to the emergency being declared.

The incident follows the loss of an Air France A330 over the Atlantic Ocean June 1.

Air Inter Flight 148 — January 20, 1992

This Airbus A320-111 hit a high ridge of Mount Sainte-Odile during its final approach into the Strasbourg airport. Eighty-two passengers and five crew members were killed.

Lufthansa Flight 2904 — September 14, 1993

This Airbus A320-211 skid off the runway in Warsaw and slammed into a wall. Seventy people were on-board, but only two died.

Philippine Airlines Flight 137 — March 22, 1998

This Airbus A320-214 overran a runway and crashed at the Bacolod City Domestic Airport. Three people on the ground were killed and many of the passengers on-board were hurt.

Gulf Air Flight 072 — August 23, 2000

This Airbus A320-212 went down into the water of the Persian Gulf as it was approaching Bahrain Airport. No one on-board survived.

Armavia Flight 967 — May 3, 2006

This Airbus A320-211 vanished off of radars while circling around the Sochi Airport in Russia. It was later found in the Black Sea. All 113 people on the plane died.

TAM Airlines Flight 3054 — July 17, 2007

This Airbus A320-233 crashed while trying to land at the Congonhas International Airport in San Paulo, Brazil. All 187 passengers as well as 12 people on the ground were killed.

TACA Airlines Flight 390 — May 30, 2008

This Airbus A320-233 overran the runway at Toncontin International Airport in Honduras. Five died.

The Airbus A320 jet, owned by Air New Zealand, went down into the water at approximately 4 p.m. GMT, according to various reports from the region. Seven people were on-board. At least two bodies have been recovered so far.

The plane was on a maintenance-related test flight, and investigators believe everyone on-board was a pilot, airline employee, or aircraft maintenance worker from New Zealand. The crash occurred about 12.5 miles east of the city of Perpignan, close to the Spain border in southern France.

Searchers have discovered some pieces of floating debris spread over a wide area of the water. It’s not yet clear, though, what caused the crash.

The Airbus A320 was operated by a German charter airline called XL Airways, according to the Associated Press. The charter had been leasing the plane from Air New Zealand since 2006, the AP reports, and was preparing to return it to the airline next month.

In an eerie coincidence, the Airbus A320 crash is within days of the anniversary of New Zealand’s deadliest air disaster. Air New Zealand flight 901 crashed into Mount Erebus on November 28, 1979. The plane disintegrated, killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew members on-board.
