In this day and age of social media and social marketing it is all about connecting with your friends, finding that brand that cares (ya okay) and then seeing if they are selling something that you want.

Well if the scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have their way that style of marketing will be old hat because marketers will be able to read your mind – literally – in order to sell you exactly what you thought you wanted. The work being done by the scientists at this point is centered around the ability to decode brain activity (thought) into audible sounds, and while this mind-reading requires some 256 electrodes to be surgically attached to your scalp the likelihood of this happening in your corner store is pretty slim – for now.

Of course the final product of something like neuromarketing is still a long way, and thankfully so in my opinion, but not as far as some might like it to be especially when you start combining disparate types of research like the one at Berkeley and the research being conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science.

At Max Planck they are looking at how our decisions are being made and finding out that in fact that our decisions are in fact made up some 10 seconds before we are aware of them. The thinking is that by monitoring the micro patterns of activity in the frontopolar cortex we would be able to predict what the participant would do seven seconds before you or I was even aware that we had made the decision.

Now to you or I seven seconds is a flash in time but to computer algorithms and predictive software that seven seconds might as well be infinity.

With the recent findings made by the neuroscientists at Berkeley and those from the Max Planck Institute, does this mean that the “buy-button” has arrived? Not exactly–and, may I add, thank goodness. Reading our consumer mind is somewhat creepy. However, on the upside, many of the more dated research techniques (questionnaires, for example) are dying a natural death. Questionnaires believe emotions can be determined by “yes” or “no” questions, with a few extra lines to scribble in a more detailed explanation.

The days of relying on one source to draw an empirical conclusion are well and truly gone.

via Martin Lindstrom – Fast Company

So the reality is that an age when our minds are being read by ever obtrusive marketing machinery and computer programs in order to bring us the true “Minority Report” style of advertising that will know instinctively what we want to buy isn’t going to happen any time soon – but chances are, given the money involved, it will one day happen.

Everything these days seems to have to revolve around social media in one way or another and one would have though that the huge ad platform of the Super Bowl we would have seen much more of advertisers trying to connect using social media hooks.

Well it turns out that this isn’t the case as fresh analysis from the Altimeter Group shows that 32% of the 87 ads that were run during the Super Bowl stayed away from not only social media but also any online references of any kind.

As Drew Olanoff noted at The Next Web this showed that some companies are still “playing it safe” when it comes to including their online presence in their major advertising messages.

In what I’ll call “playing it safe”, it appears that most companies who did make reference to a presence on the Internet, chose to use their own URL rather than a hashtag or Facebook URL. Why is this? It has to do with controlling the message, obviously.

If I’m company and I’m spending a lot of money on the biggest television stage in the United States, there’s absolutely no way I’m going to ask millions of people to use a hashtag. There’s just no context to be had there and nothing to be gained. As we’ve seen with a recent McDonalds hashtag gaffe, it might actually cost you more money and brand integrity to defend something gone awry.

I have to agree with Drew on this and additionally I find it interesting that rather than push their company’s social media pages on places like Facebook they were opting to only show direct links to their own domain pages.

This hearkens back to a long held belief by many online people that companies and people should have direct control of their online identities and “Google juice” rather than farming it all out to social media data silos like Facebook and Twitter.

While Facebook and the like might be good for spot promotion type things I don’t believe that companies, or individuals who make their living from the web, should be putting all their eggs in the social network providers control.

Twitter who has over 200 Million users, 50 Million of which log in daily, has quite a few celebrities. With many celebrities who have Millions of followers, the money that can be made from advertising is very enticing.

Now, advertising on the social network is nothing new. There’s services that allow anyone to sign up and send out tweets that make them a flat fee or so much per click. Celebrities on the other hand, thanks to Ad.ly, can make a pretty nice fee from advertising products or services.

New York Magazine shared some details about how much certain celebrities make from advertising and even more details can be read in their latest issue.

Via New York Magazine:

“The pay rate for endorsing companies like Old Navy, Toyota, Best Buy, and American Airlines is determined by the size of a celeb’s following and how that group responds to his tweets with shares and retweets.”

“On that sliding scale, Snoop Dogg (6.3 million followers) is in the top tier of payments, on the upside of $8,000 apiece, while Paula Abdul (2.2 million followers) falls somewhere in the middle, in the $5,000-each range, and Whitney Port (800,000 followers) falls in the bottom tier, making around $2,500 per tweet.”

Not bad for sending out 140 characters. And while a few thousand dollars for one tweet sounds good, take into consideration that Charlie Sheen, when he first blasted onto the Twitter scene, was paid $50,000 per tweet.

Celebrities can make a lot of money through endorsements. Advertising on social networks is simply an extension of that. Sometimes though, they don’t necessarily disclose that they’re being compensated, something that the FTC has cracked down on the last few years when it comes to endorsing or recommending something that you were compensated in some way for.

How do you feel about celebrities advertising on Twitter?

According to TBG Digital, a marketing agency, Facebook gave advertisers up to 45% off their typical cost per click rates during the fourth quarter of 2011, only if their ad/s directed users to other Facebook destinations such as a page or application.

This is quite the discount and goes to show the social network is very focused on further building up the site, as well as advertising which brings in the real money, and make them a premier choice to advertise on the web.

Being that hundreds of Millions of people log on every single day, it’s quite the popular place for both normal users and businesses and brands.

“Though one could suggest that Facebook is rewarding advertisers for keeping people in the Facebook environment, it also indicates that keeping ads within Facebook is more effective,” Patrick Toland, director of TBG’s North American operations, said in an interview.”

“Because only ads users click on make Facebook money in the cost-per-click market, it serves the network’s interest to facilitate advertisements with a higher success rate. And ads that integrate more smoothly with the Facebook experience have a set of built-in advantages, said Toland.”

The social network’s IPO is supposedly on the horizon and they need as much extra push as they can to make sure it’s a very good one. Having more people advertise and increasing that activity is crucial to moving forward.

Number of users and active users is great, but number of users and active users who click on the ads are even greater, at least in the realm of making money and running a financially successful social network.

Adweek has revealed its choices for the best commercials of 2011, an eclectic selection that takes in commercials for cars, chocolate bars, milk, TV channels, and videogames.

I’ve posted the top ten below in traditional ten-to-one format. I’d actually seen most of these, but man, number six was new to me and DEFINITELY my top choice (just me, perhaps, but I thought Adweek’s number one – see the image above – was pretty mediocre).

I guess Eminem’s ‘Chrysler’ spot (which appeared during the Superbowl and makes third place here) is pretty memorable, while Chipotle’s ad (second place) is a real charmer, even with a Coldplay song. Most over-rated ad here, in my eyes: the teaser for Xbox 360 zombie-me-do Dead Island. Admittedly better than a lot of other videogame ads, yet videogame ads hardly set much of a standard (and I say that as an avid fan of games).

But enough of my rather aimless ranting. What do you reckon, readers?

It almost seems inevitable given the growing ubiquitousness of webcams and the ability of software to detect facial movements but the idea that they could be used to gauge your emotional response to advertising on websites is more than spooky.

However this is exactly what a London-based company called Realeyes is working on with some real success apparently. The system they have developed uses the webcam that is now standard fair on computers with emotional analysis software.

The system is able to gauge a person’s mood by plotting the position of facial features says founder Mihkel Jäätma and by employing algorithms to track the change of eyebrow, mouth, or nostril alignment they can calculate the mood of the person being observed. Now add eye-movement tracking and the system will be able to tell which display ads were overlooked or which were studied for any period of time.

Right now the system is under-going testing with sites built specifically for the tracking system but plans are underway to incorporate the technology with existing display ad systems, which will of course raise privacy concerns.

Another interesting use for webcams is coming from Philips which has developed a vital-signs camera system which can be used to detect and measure things like our heart and respiration rates with extreme accuracy. The company is in the process of building out a contactless system that will enable hospitals to keep a virtual eye on patients.

Strong online advertising growth has continued into the first half of 2011, rising 23.2 percent to $14.9 billion.

Figures released by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC US) showed that the growth more than doubled year-over-year. Last year’s first half ad revenues of $12.1 billion represented an 11.3 percent increase as against 2009.

This year’s second quarter alone broke the record as it increased by 24.1 percent to $7.7 billion as compared to last year’s $6.2 billion.

Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO of IAB, explained the confidence of marketers despite the weak economy:

“The remarkably resilient performance of interactive advertising so far in 2011 demonstrates that more marketers are placing big bets on digital to tell their brand stories. This welcome news, in light of the weakness in a large part of the rest of the U.S. economy, confirms that the innovations happening in interactive marketing deliver great value to the industry and to the consumer.”

Banner ads, rich media, digital video and sponsorships (classified as display advertising) totaled more than $5.5 billion during the first two quarters of the year, representing a 27.1 percent increase over the same period last year. Digital video during the first half of this year grew by double digit, up 42.1 percent over a year ago as it close near the $1 billion mark with $891 million.

Display advertising accounted for 37 percent of all advertising expenditures for the first half of 2011. Search remained the leading online category at 49 percent. Both display and search grew by about 27 percent as compared to last year’s 11.6 percent.

So what is really happening? We have an economy that is faltering on one side and strong online advertising growth on the other end.

Adults aged 55 and older click on online ads more when compared to other age groups, according to audience research and measurement company Crowd Science.

The study, where 989 respondents were questioned, found 76% of respondents age 55+ clicked on online ads during the preceding six months, compared to just 58% of 15-24 year-olds. Although older and younger generations differed in their click behavior toward online ads, 27% of all respondents said they would accept relevant ads.

Both age group showed irritation to ads that are not relevant to them: 49% for 15-24 years old and 46% for those 55 and over.

Here are some findings from the survey:

Just 6% of respondents would be willing to pay to use their favorite websites in exchange for eliminating ads.

Two in three have clicked or acted on an ad in the past six months.

College graduates (71%) are more likely than those with a high school education or less (59%) to have clicked on an ad in the past six months.

Targeted ads appear to be more effective for males, with more males (30%) accepting of relevant ads as compared with females (22%).

Conversely, among those who don’t click on ads, males are more than twice as likely (22%) than females (10%) to indicate it’s because they don’t want to navigate away from the page.

For respondents who don’t click on ads, 21% say the main reason is because they fear getting a computer virus, and another 17% don’t trust ads to be truthful.

39% of those who clicked on an ad did so because the ad made them consider the item, another 39% because they were already considering the item, while 14% found the ad amusing.

Regardless of ad relevance, 24% arbitrarily ignore online ads.

Try to examine your attitude towards online ads. Does it fit well with the age group where you should belong? Mine does. I do not click online ads as much as those 55 years old and up.

Reuters is reporting that Facebook’s revenue for the first half of 2011 has doubled to $1.6 billion. Net income for the same period is placed at $500 million. They’re a privately-held company so no one can force them to confirm the report.

We can only assume, just like everyone, that much of the $1.6 billion must have come from advertising as the social network is said to be responsible for one third of Internet advertising impressions in the US alone this June. That figure is more than the combined total of Yahoo, Microsoft, Google, and AOL, according to comScore.

It should not be downplayed as well that the company gets a 30 percent cut of sales of virtual goods in social games like FarmVille.

In July this year, Kevin Ryan, the chief executive of DoubleClick, forecasted that Facebook will generate $1 billion in revenue from social gaming alone this year. It was also that same month that David Fisher, vice president of Facebook’s advertising and global operations told Businessweek that their ad business remains on the growth path:

“We have hundreds of thousands of advertisers around the world– that continues to grow. We continue to feel good about where we are. We’re constantly testing new ad formats. We’ve found, frankly, that users are getting value and advertisers getting value in putting more ads in.”

Investor’s interest on Facebook has pushed its valuation to $80 billion. Early this year, it was reported that the company is preparing for a $100 billion initial public offering (IPO). This amount could easily dwarf Google’s $23 billion IPO in 2004. We can only wait though, as again, no one’s confirming.

Television networks and advertising companies already do a lot of monitoring of our television habits but for the most part the current methods are archaic given all the technology we have but a new company in San Francisco looks to change all that.

The company, Flingo, has come up with a technology referred to as “Sync Apps” that TV companies are hoping to feature in televsions buy the end of the year and it looks to change how our television usage is monitored. I twill be able to report your viewing to websites and online advertisers in realtime.

Here’s how it works:

A television equipped with Sync Apps keeps tabs on everything you’re watching in real time (this could be anything from cable television, to DVDs, to video files shared over your home network). Then Sync Apps sends the information to a server that identifies whatever you’re watching. Computers, laptops, tablets, mobile devices — anything sharing the same network connection as your television — can then tap into that information to display relevant web content on the fly. If the channel on your television changes, so does what you see on the web. And here’s where the money is: Data collected and analyzed by Sync Apps will also be made available to social networking sites and advertising companies.

via io9

While this technology can supposedly turned off by the consumer I still get a bad feeling when I read about technology like this.

One of the on-going topics of discussion surrounding the whole social media game is how is Twitter actually going to start making the serious money it needs to in order to justify the large amounts of money that have been invested in it.

The most obvious avenue has always been advertising but the problem Twitter has faced is how to go down that road without alienating its growing user base.

The one idea that the company has been pursuing is the one of Promoted Tweets which allows company’s to buy Twitter ad messages which then are placed within the Trends and now the Who To Follow areas of the Twitter home page.

According to two stories on Investors’com however it would seem that these Promoted Tweets aren’t living up to expectations.

The first story written by Pete Barlas quotes ad exec Hillary Bressler about how the majority of clients think that Twitter isn’t suited for their kind of advertising needs.

But Hillary Bressler and other ad execs who work with smaller businesses advise clients to skip it.

“It might make more sense to the Kim Kardashians of world, who are tweeting about fashion, purses and things like that, but we are results driven — we don’t have a lot of branding-type-scenario clients,” said Bressler, chief executive of .Com Marketing.

Bressler says her clients advertise online specifically to boost actual sales. Twitter, she says, isn’t suited for that role.

In a follow up story Barlas finds that Twitter’s Promoted Tweets aren’t living up to company’s expectations as far as results are concerned

But while Twitter began testing ads last year, it hasn’t delivered a consistent return, says Craig Macdonald, chief marketing officer for Covario, an online marketing services company. It’s been running ads on Twitter for a consumer electronics client that it declines to name.

“Honestly, the results have been just so-so,” Macdonald said. “It doesn’t seem that great a deal for the advertiser. (Our client) is doing this for the experience, to be part of this cool new thing and so they can say they did it. But the business results are not there yet.”

Of course Twitter counters these stories by saying that they have plenty of small and medium sized businesses who have seen really good success with Promoted Tweet campaigns.

There was an interesting post on All Twitter by Lauren Dugan regarding the fact that Twitter has back tracked on its previous ban of alcohol and is now accepting Promoted Tweet advertising from alcohol companies.

In the post they talk about the recent campaign by Jack Daniels that apparently offered the company a higher engagement rate but it also brought a problem with this kind of advertising to light.

The reason that Twitter has changed their mind about this kind of adult advertising is that since they first banned this kind of advertising their user age demographics have changed with over 70% of Twitter users being over 21.

The problem is that just as the age demographic has changed so has where those user live as part of Twitter’s popularity and growth has been of an international nature.

However, problems did arise with the campaign. In particular, Twitter’s international demographics proved to be a downfall for this brand which is not available in every country. A significant portion of the conversation happening around its Promoted Trends was spent discussing what Jack Daniels actually was, with some people assuming it was a honey product rather than a whiskey.

via All Twitter

This international growth of Twitter is going to make it even harder for the company to be able to build a viable advertising revenue but as Lauren points out in the All Twitter post this maybe fixable as Twitter opens up its geo-targeted ad to more advertisers.

After 25 years as the host of the Oprah Winfrey Show at ABC Oprah is moving on to her OWN network and with that departure comes some of the most expensive TV commercial space of all time. The current charge? $1 million for a thirty second spot.

While shows such as 24 and Lost garnered large amount for their finales (but still less than $1 million per adspot) it’s extremely rare for a daytime talkshow to demand such a figure, since those shows garner smaller audiences than primetime events.

The last show to ask for such a large sum was Everybody Loves Raymond which in 2005 brought in $1.1 million per 30 second spot. However the record for a primetime show still belongs to Friends which brought in $2 million per ad.

The finale for Oprah will air on May 25, at which time the talk-show host will focus solely on rating at her slow-to-start OWN TV Network.

Amazon just announced a new way to get yourself a new Kindle and save $25.00 in the process, the only catch is that you have to be willing to live with ads as well as things like sponsored screensavers and other special offers that will show up in your Kindle whether you like it or not.

From their press release:

Millions of people are reading on Kindle, Kindle has more 5-star reviews than any other product on Amazon, and in just five months the latest-generation Kindle became the bestselling product in the 16-year history of Amazon.com. Today, Amazon introduced a new member of the Kindle family – Kindle with Special Offers for only $114. Kindle with Special Offers is the same #1 bestselling Kindle, plus special offers and sponsored screensavers. Kindle special offers and sponsored screensavers display on the Kindle screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen. Learn more about all three latest-generation Kindle family members–$114 Kindle with Special Offers, $139 Kindle, and $189 Kindle 3G–at www.amazon.com/kindle. Kindle with Special Offers is now available for pre-order to customers in the U.S. and will ship on May 3.

So,let’s see, you get to save $25 off of the stock $139 Kindle and in return you agree to have ads .. err .. special offers and ad sponsored screensavers 365 days of the year.

Yup, that sounds like a fair trade in order to save a measly $25. NOT!

Sorry, but if you want me to have a Kindle that I agree to having ads in my face for 365 days then you are going to have to do a lot better. Like for free better.

As kids I don’t think there isn’t a single one of who didn’t at one time or another wasted away a boring weekend by playing with the perennial doughie mixture called Play-Doh only to have all the different colors mushed together into one gross looking multi-colored ball.

Well it seems that a car firm in London, England decided to take those childhood memories one step further and with the help of eight modelers took 1.5 tons of aquamarine blue Play-Doh and created a replica of the new Chevrolet Orlando, a family friendly seven-seater car.

The vehicle, in a bright blue shade of aquamarine was pictured parked up in the bohemian Clerkenwell district of London where startled commuters and traffic wardens looked on.

A spokeswoman for the project said:’We’ve pretty much exhausted the UK supplies of aquamarine Play-Doh.’

The replica Chevrolet is 4.6m long and the company said the car will be on display in the Lakeside shopping centre in Thurrock, Essex, for the next week.

The car firm said it chose to model its vehicle in Play-Doh as the modelling putty topped a poll of the most-loved toy from yesteryear.

via Daily Mail

I would have loved to be sitting in a coffee shop across from where this Play-Doh car was parked just to watch the look on people’s faces.

Er, wow. This close-to-the-bone advert for Kaos Studios and THQ’s Homefront has been appearing recently on YouTube in Australia, where it’s already terrified a fair few users with its claim that North Korea has attacked an unnamed enemy.

Sporting subtitles such as ‘WORLD LEADERS IN SHOCK’, this newsy-looking ad speaks of an ‘ACT OF UNJUSTIFIED AGGRESSION’ from the isolated state. This, of course, is the reality in Homefront, a game in which North Korea invades Asia and then North America.

Not exactly the most tasteful spot, right? It’s already got people talking on Twitter and other gaming sites, which I guess is what they were aiming for. Though, er, admittedly most of the comments are like this:

@JimLenoir: Stay classy THQ. This is a terrible and tasteless attempt at advertising a game.

“Almost freaked out at the YouTube homepage banner ad for Homefront, thinking it was a real headline on a North Korean attack. Not cool.”

“I find the front page advertisement for HomeFront on Youtube to be offensive. I thought North Korea had actually attacked. Misleading.”

… and does a better job than most of his richer, big budget rivals. This commercial (video below) is the work of Ben McCambridge, 29, an assistant editor working in LA. For his directorial debut, McCambridge decided to spend $6,000 of his own money shooting a spot for Sony’s PlayStation 3. The result, as you can see below, is rather spiffy.

Called ‘Kids’, the commercial shows a world where kids’ imaginations help them escape the real world and live out wild fantasies. “I’ve worked on dozens of commercials and thought I’d try my hand at making one myself,” McCambridge told Kotaku. “At the end of the day I made it because I’m a gamer, wrote it down, and liked the idea.”

“Who knows, maybe Sony will see it an take an interest,” he says. “Imagine what the spot would look like with a budget!”

Sony, hire this guy.

[Via Kotaku]

You are looking at the first thing that 29-year-old Ben McCambridge claims to have ever directed. Not bad for a first-timer, because this is awesome.McCambridge is an assistant editor working in Los Angeles, cutting commercials. “I’ve worked on dozens of commercials and thought I’d try my hand at making one myself,” he tells Kotaku. “At the end of the day I made it because I’m a gamer, wrote it down, and liked the idea.”

Shelling out US$6,000 from his own pocket, McCambridge was able to create this ad, spending most of the money on shooting permits in Los Angeles. Six grand is peanuts compared to what most big commercials cost.

This is how McCambridge sees the PS3, as a world where kids, young and old, can escape from real world and enter other worlds. No, he hasn’t shown this ad to Sony, but simply created it on spec. Because he loves moving pictures and because, like you and me, he loves video games.

“Who knows, maybe Sony will see it an take an interest,” he says. “Imagine what the spot would look like with a budget!”

It seems that VW’s Black Beetle has taken over YouTube and in the process totally destroyed the site, or at least the page that the video is playing on. Now I could play the video at this point but you wouldn’t get the full effect so do yourself a favor and click the link to head over to YouTube and check it out.

Very Cool.
