The Google Android OS was a big winner in the ad impression space during the third quarter of 2011 securing 56 percent of the market compared to Apple’s 28 percent reach. Falling further behind is one time mobile darling Research in Motion (RIM) which grabbed 13 percent of the market based on Blackberry mobile use.

While Google Android gathered the most mobile ad impressions Apple was still the single manufacturer leader with 23 percent of mobile ads compared to Samsung and HTC who both followed with approximately 16 percent of each.

The report also showed that 54 percent of all iOS ad impressions came from iPhone devices while the iPad and iPod Touch units made up the remaining 46 percent. Based on current numbers iOS ad impressions have grown by 60 percent over the last 12 months while iPad impressions climbed by 456 percent amid growing sales numbers.

The Millenial network has also reported that of the top 20 devices used on their network 15 use Android while six of those Android devices come from manufacturer HTC.

The study also found that Android Apps provide the most in-game ad spending with a 49 percent share of the market, up just 20 percent from year over year. Apple following in second place with 41 percent of the app ad spending market, up from 36 percent over last years numbers.

It doesn’t seem anyone really ever bought the official explanation that commercials were being played in a somehow different way from regular programming, causing advertisements to often sound far louder than regular programming through no intention of TV stations or advertisers- or that ads were never really louder to begin with.

The disparity seems to have grown ever further in the past few years, and you’ve probably experienced straining to hear programming dialogue only to have someone come in and chide you to “turn it DOWN” once the “super loud” adverts come back. It seems lawmakers are finally tired of shouty commercials blaring forth from their tee-vee sets, because both the House and the Senate have approved legislation to prohibit advertisements to play at a louder volume than regular programming.

Ars Technica quotes New York Senator Chuck Schumer’s remarks on the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act:

“It’s about time we turned down the volume on loud commercials that try to startle TV watchers into paying attention. This is a simple step that will keep ads at the same decibel level as the programs they are interrupting,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), sponsor of the Senate version of the bill. “TV viewers should be able to watch their favorite programs without fear of losing their hearing when the show goes to a commercial.”

The legislation has to make one more trip back to the House before it goes to the President for approval.

So, what’s more frustrating that ink that costs more than unicorn blood?

Being forced to print out ads with ink that costs more than unicorn blood! If you own a printer, you kind of know the aggrieved feeling that comes alongside having to print out anything, even important stuff like passport documents. But a post on Consumerist that comes via Computer World seems to suggest that ads printed on your precious, zillion-dollars-a-cartridge printer ink are just over the horizon- generally bundled with other content but still about as welcome as herpes.

According to the CW post, Hewlett-Packard thinks you won’t really mind scheduled ads printing out on your printer, ink and paper every day at around 7am or so- Stephen Nigro, senior vice president in HP’s Imaging and Printing Group says:

“What we discovered is that people were not bothered by it [an advertisement],” Nigro said. “Part of it I think our belief is you’re used to it. You’re used to seeing things with ads.”

It also seems that these ads will be based on stuff you look at on the internet, which sounds creepy and unwanted:

“Through IP (Internet Protocol) sniffing, you have an idea about where those printers are so naturally it allows you to kind of already target your offers,” Nigro said.

Of course, HP and Yahoo plan on keeping your privacy “in mind” when they force you to print out ads based on your browsing history, asserts Vyomesh Joshi, head of the HP’s Imaging and Printing Group.

“That’s where we need to be very clear business rules in terms of privacy,” Joshi said.

So, basically, if you buy one of HP’s new web connected printers, expect to wake up to a pile of printed ads for “asian ass porn” and no ink.

Well, perhaps it’s a tie.

First we had an anthromorphic oven begging a Quizno’s employee named Scott to “put it in me.” Now Burger King has joined the sandwiches equal sex brigade with a series of ads featuring the most obvious BJ metaphor I’ve ever seen in fast food. Forgetting the fact that Quizno’s sandwiches taste like toasted vomit, this is just gross.

Still not seeing it? Check out the copy. >shudder<

Fill your desire for something long, juicy and flame-grilled with the NEW BK SUPER SEVEN INCHER. Yearn for more after you taste the mind-blowing burger that comes with a single beef patty, topped with American cheese, crispy onions and the A1 Thick and Hearty Steak Sauce.

I have to hand it to you- with your new ad, you’ve managed to put this rare meat eating hussy off sex and burgers. Well played, Burger King, well played.

In a fitting twist, Apple’s latest ads bring a Seinfeldian element of self-awareness to the campaign against Microsoft.

The new spots, released today, strike me as being quite akin to the “Seinfeld” show’s season four plot line in which Jerry and George create a show about nothing for NBC. In Apple’s case, the company has created a commercial about a commercial that was about their commercials. Still with me?

Maybe it’d be easier just to watch. The first spot directly takes on the cash spent in Microsoft’s Seinfeld-started $300 million campaign:

The second makes light of the lack of “Vista” references in the latest Windows ads:

The irony, of course, is that outside of the initial “I’m a Mac” line, both spots largely avoided any actual Mac references themselves. One also wonders how much money Apple is paying for its own advertising efforts, since it’s bringing the subject up.

Ah, the art of negative campaigning. You can turn off the political coverage, but you can’t escape it. Will the slamming tactic work for Apple, or will it deliver a negative response such as what we often see within the political arena? The commercials are comical, no doubt, but let’s see how much of an impact they actually make.
