This should come as a surprise to just about no one, but ABC has cancelled its controversial cross-dressing comedy ‘Work It‘ after only two episodes.

Before the show even got on the air, Work It was being criticized by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), which claimed that “by encouraging the audience to laugh at the characters’ attempts at womanhood, the show gives license to similar treatment of transgender women.”

GLAAD went on to say that while Work It‘s first episode didn’t “explicitly address transgender people, many home viewers unfamiliar with the realities of being transgender will still make the connection.”

It didn’t help that Work It was nearly universally slammed by critics, and was met with fairly low ratings for the pilot episode, which dropped even further for the second.

According to a report by the New York Times, repeats of Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing will fill in for Work It‘s now-vacant time slot for the time being. Although not yet confirmed, there’s the possibility that the third season of Cougar Town could fill in.

Bill Lawrence, executive producer on Cougar Town, said in a tweet on Friday (via Reuters): “Hoping CT’s premiere date will be announced Tuesday. Fingers crossed…”

What could possibly replace Desperate Housewives- with its lush visuals, Mary Alice’s soothing voice and the uptempo background music- when the long-running ABC nighttime soap ends it run at the close of its current season?

The show became a pop-culture sensation when it premiered in 2004, and the core cast have endured all manner of delightfully ridiculous plot machinations as the show has wended its way through eight seasons of suicides, divorces, serial killers, weddings, babies and tornadoes. But as Desperate Housewives draws ever closer to its final curtain call, creator Marc Cherry has some very vague hinting about the show’s final surprises to bestow upon fans.

Cherry says that Desperate Housewives has had to illustrate its characters far more deeply than Sex in the City, so don’t expect any big-screen Dubai trips after the finale airs, as he believes the wives of Wisteria Lane’s storylines are all tapped out. In fact, it nearly sounds like Cherry is a bit done with the whole Housewives thing:

“’Sex and The City’ only did a total of, I think, 69 episodes, so I always thought that the advantage for them was that they hadn’t really plumbed the depths of those characters. After eight years, boy, I think we’re done. And I’m happy about that. That’s not a bad thing. I feel very satisfied with where we are.”

Cherry did confirm that he plans to make an appearance in one of the show’s final episodes, but not a major one:

“Yeah, I’m gonna do a Hitchcock. And the hair and makeup people will go through more hell that day than they’ve ever gone through.”

Aside from that, the soap mastermind says don’t hold your breath for spoilers, because he’s locking them down in a major way so as not to ruin the Desperate Housewives end-of-run twists for loyal fans:

“I’m so not revealing what the end is gonna be. It’s a surprise and I’m being hyper-protective of it. No comment on that.”

With the start of January comes another round of a scoop filled month at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, with highly anticipated insider info from the creators and writers of some of the best television shows in prime time.

At the same token there’s also some insight from studio executives who are usually unseen figures (with the exception of the Upfronts in May) that make the big calls usually around this time  for renewals, premature cancellations and show shuffles.

Earlier today ABC president Paul Lee said that Courteney Cox’s (is she still an Arquette these days?) Cougar Town may be benched, but it certainly isn’t out for the count, stating that “The reality is I think Cougar Town is having one of its best [seasons].We haven’t yet landed on where it’s going to go, but it’s tentatively in there for March. We’re going to give it a good launching pad… We will be [announcing a premiere date] in a couple weeks.”

Sounds promising. Unlike the case for the lone soap opera show General Hospital whose future remains uncertain. Regarding its future Lee went on to say that he doesn’t have a time frame to make the call for cancellation yet.

In terms of experimenting with its schedule Lee isn’t shying away from anything out of the ordinary. A whole new comedy night will be created and don’t be surprised if you see Cougar Town in the mix along with Happy Endings and midseason newcomer Don’t Trust the B—- in  the James Van Der Beek’s satirized comedy Apartment 23. “It will be great to have a group of great irreverent comedies together. That’s the dream.”

The shuffling around doesn’t stop there! Thursday night’s 10pm slot is going to get either pretty interesting or remain dead very quickly with a new series from Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice creator Shonda Rhimes called Scandal. The creator’s Private Practice will move from its regularly scheduled time slot to Tuesday’s at 10pm following the Dancing With The Stars results show.

Latsly, if you’re bored with what’s already on your television screen, ABC has a slew of midseason replacements and spring replacements with Apartment 23 premiering on April 11th on Wednesday’s at 9:30pm,  and Scandal which premieres on April 5th on Thursday’s at 10pm.

Comcast XFinity TV and Disney-ABC customers will be gaining access to much more content, as the two companies have entered into a very wide-ranging deal.

Notable for being Disney-ABC’s first authentication deal, the agreement covers more than 70 channels under that particular corporate umbrella. It also bears mentioning that at this point, ten years is a very, very long commitment in streaming, at a time when many companies feel that the value of such deals might still be very fluid and subject to large fluctuations.

In addition to local affiliates and some HD versions of many of the channels, the deal will allow customers to view content from ABC, ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN 3D, ESPN GamePlan, ESPN FullCourt and ESPN3 across several types of devices.

Both sides issued statements trumpeting the massive deal, and Comcast’s president and CEO Neil Smit said:

“We are very pleased to have reached this unprecedented and innovative, long-term agreement with Disney which embraces the future of entertainment and allows Comcast to continue to bring our vision of TV Everywhere to Xfinity customers whether at home or on the go.”

Smit added:

“Comcast was the first video provider to create technology that enabled us to deliver content to customers where and when they want it across any viewing experience.”

Co-chair of Disney, Anne Sweeney, commented:

“This landmark deal is a great example of what can be achieved when programmers and distributors collaborate and innovate together to meet the ever-evolving needs of consumers and enhance the viewing experience.”

Comcast, Disney Hammer Out Ten-Year Deal For Multi-Platform Viewing is a post from: The Inquisitr

Ty Pennington and his team of makeover experts will air their final episodes of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on Jan. 13 after nine seasons at ABC.

According to the network the final show in two parts which will air on Jan. 6 and Jan. 13.

A huge hit when it first started airing on Sunday nights the show was a spin-off from the already cancelled plastic-surgery show Extreme Makeover. 

In 2005 the show saw it’s largest viewership with more than 20 million watchers however over the years those ratings have dwindled with current shows fetching just four to five million viewers across all demographics.

Rounding out it’s 200 episodes the show will feature seven families who were devastated when the Joplin, Mo. tornado wiped out their homes and most of their belongings.

For fans of the show it’s not a final farewell, ABC says Ty Pennington and his crew are still expected to return for occasional specials although plans for those future shows have not yet been revealed.

One year after Christiane Amanpour left CNN to join up with ABC’s This Week, the anchor is set to make a return to CNN, the network announced today. In her place, Good Morning America‘s George Stephanopoulos will be returning as the host of This Week.

According to the network, Amanpour will begin hosting a weekday segment in 2012 on CNN International, which the anchor left in 2010.

“Christiane Amanpour has been synonymous with international reporting and with CNN for many years,” CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton said in a statement. “We could not be happier that through this unique arrangement with ABC News, her experience and global perspective are returning to a nightly news broadcast for our international audience.”

Amanpour isn’t leaving ABC entirely, however; as part of a “unique arrangement” with ABC, she’ll stick around as a “global affairs anchor” and is planned to host “multiple” specials during primetime for ABC News.

“I am looking forward to getting back into the field to report stories on global issues that matter greatly to the American people,” Amanpour said in a statement. “At the same time, I will be broadcasting once again to hundreds of millions of people across the world with a weekday show on CNN International.”

ABC says that Stephanopoulos will continue hosting Good Morning America, but ABC says that he may be doing so on a 4-day schedule.

“Christiane has had an absolutely remarkable year at ABC News, with world-beating exclusives,” ABC News President Ben Sherwood said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that she will be able to get back out in the field, bringing these important global stories back to our audiences, particularly primetime.”

Are Courteney Cox and her co-stars in Cougar Town losing their appeal to TV viewers? That’s the question being posed by fans of the show after ABC ordered a reduced number of episodes for the third season of the sitcom.

Whereas the first season of Cougar Town saw 24 episodes aired, the second season spawned only 22. Now, for the third season, only 15 episodes have been ordered, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The network’s midseason schedule was released Friday, and Cougar Town was conspicuously absent. Panicky fans immediately began to speculate the comedy had been axed, but ABC soothed their concerns, tweeting:

“Don’t worry #CougarTown fans, the show is coming back next year…we just don’t have the date yet!”

So why the brutal slashing of so many episodes? Industry experts speaking to Entertainment Weekly have suggested the smaller order is more a reflection of ABC juggling their content, rather than a statement about the quality of the show or viewing figures.

Indeed, the viewing figures have held up very well for the Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel-created sitcom – the first two seasons both averaged 7.34 million views per episode. And of course, it’s very plausible ABC is simply making more room for new shows – Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal and Krysten Ritter’s Don’t Trust the B– in Apartment 23 both appear for the first time in its new midseason schedule.

ABC News’ World News Now co-anchor Dan Kloeffler was reporting about Star Trek star Zach Quinto who recently came out of the closet when the anchor decided to reveal to his 3:00am audience that he’s also gay.

Writing on his blog Kloeffler said:

“Kind of a big moment for me while filling in on World News Now,” while he added, ”which is by far the most fun you can legally have at 3:00 in the morning!”

The former NBC News staffer and MSNBC host had never told his viewers about his sexual orientation but he says his family, friends and co-workers have known about his sexual preference for years.

Kloeffler went on to write:

“In fact, an old boyfriend–now best friend–has always given me a hard time about not doing so,” while adding, “But for the same reason that Zach decided to come out, I too, no longer wanted to hide this part of my life.

“There have been too many tragic endings and too many cases of bullying because of intolerance,” he continued. “As a kid I wanted someone to look up to, someone that could relate to the feelings I was having. Most of all, I wanted to know that it would get better.”

Kloeffler has asked that he doesn’t “become the story” but at the same time he wants to stand beside his fellow gay men.

Are you surprised that Dan Kloeffler came out on the air so suddenly? It’s fitting that he suddenly announced that he’s gay because that’s basically what Zach Quinto did when he decided to abruptly come out following the teen suicide of a bullied gay boy.

In news that should shock nobody ABC has cancelled their attempted remake of Charlie’s Angels.

While the 1970s classic remake was heavily hyped by the network critics and viewers panned the premiere which had already opened to mediocre reviews and lost more followers each week.

The hour-long series, produced by Drew Barrymore simply couldn’t compete in a Thursday slot against such shows as Simon Cowell’s X-Factor.

Charlie’s Angels had a decent cast starring Minka Kelly, Rachel Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh, if nothing else it definitely one of the hottest cast lineups on TV.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the episodes that have already been shot will continue to air until such a time that ABC executives figure out what to do with the popular time slot.

Do you think ABC should have given Charlie’s Angels more time to develop a fan following? Considering that a lesbian kiss among the shows stars Minka Kelly and Rachel Taylor couldn’t save the series I highly doubt they were going to find the male crowd they wanted with further publicity stunts.

Wonder Woman couldn’t survive original fan scrutiny and it’s obvious that Charlie’s Angel’s couldn’t make a comeback, perhaps now TV executives will begin to realize the error of their ways and actually come up with worthwhile scripted shows for their viewers. Who am I kidding the show will probably be replaced by more reality TV dribble or an already syndicated show.

Tim Allen’s new ABC sitcom Last Man Standing was a big hit with audiences last night while debuting with an average of 13 million viewers over the shows two episodes which aired from 8 PM to 9PM. The show was ABC’s biggest 8 PM comedy series debut since 2004.

While the show debuted to great numbers critics have panned the show for it’s predictability and stale setup. According to Slate the show is “Very probably the worst sitcom on network television” while Hitfix.com called the show “groan worthy” and The Washington Post says the series is “homophobic, xenophobic and generally just phobic.”

It could simply be that critics don’t like the fact that Tim Allen basically recreated Home Improvement. Tim’s character Mike is a super-macho sporting-goods store worker who decides to spend more time with his family (replace the sons on Home Improvement with daughters) while grunting about being a man.

While the show has not received the type of reviews ABC would have liked the The Hollywood Reporter did praise Tim Allen by announcing:

“It would be a trillion times worse without Allen’s veteran presence and ability to sell comedy.”

The new partnership was announced this morning on “Good Morning America.”

Ross Levinsohn, executive vice president of Americas at Yahoo! said:

“Yahoo! is committed to building the richest set of premium and personalized content experiences for our users. Our deep collaboration with ABC News further strengthens Yahoo! as the No. 1 online news source, greatly enhancing our already robust news content. ABC News and Ben Sherwood’s vision is completely symbiotic with ours; together we can create highly engaging experiences for more than 100 million users a month that will set the standard for the industry.”

The New York Times reports that ABC has struggled to find an online presence. This new partnership with Yahoo! will bring ABC’s content, including videos from “Good Morning America,” to a built in audience of more than 100 million viewers every month.

Yahoo! and ABC are already taking advantage of the new partnership. Yahoo! has been advertising an exclusive interview between ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos and President Obama. The video of the interview will be live-streamed on both ABC.com and Yahoo.com.

ABC will also be producing three new online shows for Yahoo!. “Newsmakers,” which will see Stephanopoulos talking with weekly guests, “Around The World” with Christiane Amanpour,” and “This Could Be Big,” a technology-focused series by Bill Weir.

The New York Times reports that Yahoo News is currently No.1 with 80 million unique visitors a month. ABC draws about 20 million unique visitors a month.

Chord Overstreet makes a guest appearance on tonight’s episode of The Middle, so here’s a sneak video preview of the 22-year-old Glee star at work (thanks to these guys).

Overstreet plays the role of Mr. Wilkerson, Brick’s (Atticus Shaffer) new age, ultra hands-on fourth grade teacher. As it happens, his particular brand of tutoring doesn’t go down well with Brick’s dad Mike (played by the always excellent Neil Flynn).

The clip below shows the pair debating Mr. Wilkerson’s decision to let Brick skip gym. Also, I need an answer ball in my home.

This September, “All My Children” fans will be saying goodbye to their favorite residents of Pine Valley. Unfortunatley, Mary Fickett, one of the original cast members of the iconic soap opera, won’t be around for the farewell party. Fickett passed away at her Callao, Virginia home on Thursday. She was 83.

Fickett, who played nurse Ruth Martin on “All My Children” for close to forty years, won an Emmy for her role in 1973. It was the first year that an Emmy was given to an individual actor for daytime dramas.

The LA Times reports that Fickett played Nurse Ruth from 1970 to 1995 and again from 1998 to 2000. “All My Children” set the standard for extraordinary plots, but Fickett was proud to be part of the “core” of the long-running daytime drama.

Fickett said in an interview with Time in 1995:

“There has to be some core around which other people disintegrate and come together again. If the place were in chaos all the time, you wouldn’t have some place to bounce off of. They’ve had problems — Ruth was raped, and she had an affair — but viewers want to believe that there is a core.”

“All My Children” is going off the air this September. ABC said that they will be dedicating the September 21st episode to Mary Fickett. The show will go off the air two days later on September 23rd.

‘All My Children’ Actress Mary Fickett Dies at 83 is a post from: The Inquisitr

Susan Lucci has struck out at the TV execs who killed the long-running soap All My Children- on which she starred as Erica Kane- in an epilogue to her memoir All My Life.

Lucci, 64, appeared on the recently-canceled soap for an astounding four decades before its cancellation earlier this year. (The show was replaced with titles including The Chew.) Her words, added to the book in paperback, are aimed squarely at ABC’s daytime chief Brian Frons. Lucci lambasts Frons’ decision to go with cheaper daytime talk shows over the “iconic” melodrama:

“An iconic show was losing out to greed … If Brian Frons could show his bosses that he could save the network 40 percent … he could keep his job even if the rest of us lost ours… I watched Brian Frons’ decisions destroy the production of our show and the lives of people on both sides of the country.”

Lucci describes Frons as both “ignorant” and “arrogant,” as well as “self-congratulatory” about the decision to ax the popular soap. She questions the judgement of “any network executive choosing to alienate millions of loyal viewers in these economic times,” and says she considered leaving a nasty voicemail for Frons saying ”F.U., and your little dog too,” but apparently the pointed, angry addendum in the book sufficed for the soap star.

ABC hasn’t ignorned Lucci’s bridge-burning. The network briefly commented on her remarks, saying:

“We have all the respect in the world for Susan, and are sorry she felt the need to write this epilogue to an otherwise incredible career.”

Desperate Housewives and it’s residents on Wisteria Lane will be making their victory lap next season as the show’s run draws to an end and the series is officially canceled by ABC.

Speaking to the AP ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee said of the final season:

“I just wanted to make sure that this show that sort of put this network on the map — certainly the new brand of this network for the last six or seven years — had its victory lap. Had a chance to really set out every episode and build an arc for those 22 episodes so that we could say goodbye to this iconic show.”

The announcement didn’t really surprise anyone in the industry as it was already known that show creator Marc Cherry was leaving as show producer next season, while ratings for the former top rated show have been on a drastic decline over the last several seasons.

In an ABC press release the company said the final season:

“will roll out in a way that is accessible even to viewers who may have lapsed in their viewing, and be all the richer and more rewarding for the series’ loyal fans.”

The final season of Desperate Housewives will premiere on September 25 and following each episode will be the networks new thriller Pan Am which they hope will pick up ratings where Housewives have left off.

Her initial tweet concerned her upcoming interview with kidnap victim Jaycee Lee Dugard on ABC TV. Sawyer announced her intention to tweet live during the two hour special program with this message:

“Diane Sawyer Firing up my thumbs… Thanks all for the welcome. Looking forward to live tweeting w you during #JayceeABC special. Sun 9-11p/E.”

Sawyer then followed up her first tweet with this as the interview began on ABC:

“Big TV night @ABC : almost time for #JayceeABC special. Big night for me: first time live tweeting. Here goes!”

Another tweet, sent out during the interview on ABC went as follows:

“This is tough. Book detailed. Important for me that J be comfortable with what she says out loud #JayceeABC”

Sawyer then went on to send forty more tweets during the course of her interview with Ms. Dugard. Sawyer sent mostly original tweets but she also interacted with users by answering several of their tweets during the interview.

Jaycee Dugard is the 31 year old woman who was kidnapped from her home in South Lake Tahoe, California in 1991 as an 11 year old child. Ms. Dugard was held captive by convicted rapist Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy until she was finally discovered in August, 2009. After managing to avoid detection despite several visits from authorities over the years, the Garridos were finally arrested on August 26, 2009. Garrido and his wife were taken into custody by the FBI and Jaycee was reunited with her family after 18 long years. On April 28, 2011, the Garridos pled guilty to kidnapping and rape and on June 2, 2011, Philip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years. Nancy Garrido received 36 years to life.

Jaycee Dugard gave birth two two daughters as the result of the repeated rapes by Garrido. According to Jaycee Dugard’s aunt, Tina Dugard, “They are clever, articulate, curious girls who have a bright future ahead of them.” Jaycee and her daughters are now living in a secret location in California after receiving a $20 million dollar settlement  to compensate her for “various lapses by the Corrections Department [which contributed to] Dugard’s continued captivity, ongoing sexual assault and mental and/or physical abuse.” According to Judge Daniel Weinstein, who negotiated for the State of California, the settlement was reached to avoid a lawsuit which would be a “greater invasion of privacy and greater publicity for the state.”

Since her rescue from Gerrido. Ms Dugard has begun to rebuild her life and has written a best selling book about her ordeal, “A Stolen Life.” Released on Tuesday June, 11, 2011, the book hit #1 on Amazon shortly after the Diane Sawyer Interview. Much of discussion between Ms. Sawyer and Jaycee Dugard was centered around the content of her gripping memoir.

Ms. Sawyer has received an enthusiastic response to her joining the Twitter universe and as a result, she has already managed to amass 11,000 followers of her twitter account.

Nine years after her high profile abduction, Elizabeth Smart is taking on a role on ABC as a commentator.

An ABC spokeswoman commented on Smart’s new gig, saying:

“We expect that she can add some insightful, invaluable perspective of what families are going through and bring stories to life for viewers,” network spokeswoman Julie Townsend told ShowTracker. “Her contributions will be very much focused on the looking-forward aspect of these situations.”

After the story broke, Smart released a statement through a representative:

“I am committed to giving back and getting involved where I can make the greatest difference through child advocacy work. Partnering with ABC provides a powerful tool to help me accomplish this. I look forward to working to create awareness for and helping bring other missing children home as well as helping to prevent others from experiencing what I went through.”

Smart, now 23, captured the attention of America when she was kidnapped from her bedroom and was presumed dead by many after she remained missing for the better part of a year. Her abductor was sentenced earlier this year to life in prison without parole.

Since her return home, Smart has largely avoided the spotlight, save for a few scattered appearances. In the clip below, she holds her own against CNN’s Nancy Grace.

Every reality show has a bad boy, but it’s safe to say that Bentley Williams, from this season’s The Bachelorette, is the crème de la crème. According to the show’s host Chris Harrison,

“He (Williams) almost shut down production on the show.”

As posted previously, Bentley was begged to stay by “Bachelorette” Ashley Herbert, despite his apparent non attraction to her.

“She’s fallen for this guy, and she’ll even talk on Monday night how she’s fallen in love with this guy,” said Harrison. “He was easily the front-runner.”

On upcoming episode 3 however, Bentley makes his departure from the show and ends up hurting Ashley so bad that she nearly opts out of the rest of the season.

“How it happens, how this goes down, will be one of the most talked about moments we have ever had on this show,” promised Harrison.

The obvious question to be asked is, why cast Bentley when it was clear that his intentions were malicious? Does the show value ratings over a woman’s dignity? According to Harrison this was not the case:

He obviously didn’t say all those derogatory things in casting. He might have said, “It would be cool if it was Emily.” He obviously didn’t say, “If it’s Ashley, I’m going to use and destroy her.”

Chris went on to reveal that they even gave Ashley subtle warnings to let her know that Williams was not to be trusted. It was ultimately her decision however that kept Bentley on the show for as long as he stayed.

If you have information about a guy before he even gets out of the limo, that’s beyond a red flag. We gave her the option and said, “You don’t have to meet this guy. We can pull him.” We justify everything by giving Ashley the power. It was her job to say no. We don’t step in and say, “That’s the wrong decision.” We never do. She was privy to some of the information. I had many conversations with her about this and so did the producers but she defended him every step of the way. She never heeded any of the warning signs.

The Bachelor winner Emily Maynard has broken up with Brad Womack and on Friday she took to her Twitter page to thank her fans for their love and support.

Maynard Tweeted:

“Thank you so much for the support and love. It means more to me than you know. Busy weekend so I’ll see you on Monday! Ephesians 4:29″

UsMagazine.com broke the story of Maynard’s breakup when they caught her in Charlotte, N.C. shopping without the big diamond engagement ring Womack presented her on ABC’s “The Bachelor” finale.

A source told the celebrity mag that the long-distance situation of their relationship was too hard to manage and “It’s completely over now.”

Apparently Maynard returned the engagement ring to ABC, the network originally gave the ring to Womack to present to his winning choice.

With CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric stepping down from her anchor role, TV network CBS was hoping to keep Couric on their payroll with a new syndicated talk show, however negotiations are now rumored to have ended without a happy ending for the network.

According to CBS insiders, Couric wanted a heavy hand in the company’s news operations, however executives were only willing to give her bit pieces on their news magazine show 60 Minutes.

At this time Katie will part ways with CBS and another rumor is pointing to ABC as the possible future home for Couric, her new syndicated talk show and more than likely some type of involvement in their news operations.

Come back to the Today Show Katie, it will give me a reason to wake up a bit earlier from Monday through Friday.
