Lawyer Frank Shoemaker will soon be the proud owner of a new license plate that shows his support for the legalization of marijuana. According to reports the ACLU threatened to sue the state of Nebraska on Shoemaker’s behalf if they did not approve his request for a license plate that read “NE 420.”

The state first turned down the request because they said it promoted “illegal drug use” and carried with it other “negative associations.”

420 of course refers to the pop cultural reference for “marijuana” and is celebrated on April 20 of each year thanks to the unofficial National Pot Smoking Day. The NE meanwhile is the abbreviation for Nebraska where Shoemaker hopes to make marijuana growing and use legal.

With his license plate in hand Shoemaker’s next hopeful victory is a petition he is currently circulating that will place a measure to legalize marijuana on the upcoming voters ballot.

Speaking about his motives Frank Shoemaker says:

“All I ever wanted was to work with fellow Nebraskans in the democratic process,” and “No one should have to fear government censorship for his political views.”

In the meantime governmental control over marijuana and other drug laws have created headaches for California pot shops despite the fact that a recent study has shown that 50% of American’s want marijuana legalized. Hopefully the federal government doesn’t swoop in and confiscate his car or perhaps just his bumbper, after all they love to rule over state marijuana laws with an iron grip lately.

There’s a day for just about everything, and if you’re fond of smoking pot, you’ll be pleased to know that April 20th is National Weed Day.

Also known as Marijuana Appreciation Day, the annual event celebrates all things pot, including celebrations throughout the more tolerant parts of North America.

The date of National Weed Day (4/20, or just 420) relates to a term used to describe the smoking of pot. According to Wikipedia:

The term originated from a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, United States in 1971. The teens would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue.

The biggest National Weed Day events are held at the University of Colorado, Ottawa, Vancouver, and several towns in New Zealand.

April 20 (4/20 or 420) is “National Pot Smoking Day.”

National Pot Smoking Day is a day where people all over the world celebrate by smoking marijuana. It’s an unofficial holiday that is based on the simple concept of smoking cannabis and being happy.

There are several different versions of the story about how National Pot Smoking Day got started, but I’m inclined to go along with the editor of High Times, Steven Hager.

His story is that the term “420″ got started at San Rafael High School in 1971 when a group of about a dozen pot-smoking students calling themselves the Waldos would meet after class at about 4:20 in the afternoon to smoke pot near the campus statue of Louis Pasteur. They made 420 a code for the time to get high, and the 420 code’s use spread throughout an entire generation, even going so far as to be mentioned in the music of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead.

Other versions say 420 originated from the police dispatch code that identified pot smoking or that 420 was the number of chemical compounds found in pot.

Whatever the case may be, if you’re a connoisseur, dust off the Bob Marley vinyl, twist one up and be happy. 420.
