Read this post a year or so from now, and the words might just LEAP OUT AT YOU. That’s because Sony has announced plans to ship 3D televisions, laptops, and Blu-ray players by the end of 2010. 3D films in cinemas have taken off in the last twelve months, while British Sky Broadcasting has already pledged to introduce a 3D satellite channel in the UK during 2010. Pretty soon, the same tech will be entering homes.

Not only that, but plans are afoot in Sony Towers for PlayStation 3 software that is compatible with the new tech – in other words, real, actual 3D games.

With a standard format for 3D technology still up in the air, Sony is banking on “active shutter” technology. This uses electronic glasses with tiny shutters that alternately darken over one eye, and then the other, in synchronization with the refresh rate of the screen, while the display switches between different perspectives for each eye. Crazy stuff.

There’s nothing like a date for all of this lovely new tech yet, let alone a price, but expect a 3D TV to cost you the equivalent of … quite a few LCD screens. LittleBigPlanet 3D will be worth it, I suspect.

Avatar, the much anticipated 3D sci-fi flick directed by James Cameron, is getting a game. Best of all, developer Ubisoft will be using the same technology as the film, so that the game is displayed in 3D (though only on Xbox 360 and PS3); it’ll probably be a lot more convincing than the Virtua Boy ever was. Cameron’s involvement is said to be “significant,” while several actors from the film will be lending their voices.

Announced over two years ago, barely a peep has been heard or seen of the game project, but here it is! It, uh, doesn’t appear very 3D, yet it’s undoubtedly lovely – these first screens aren’t too far from how the film looks. Eurogamer has a whole gallery of these available, so head here!

It seems that for some reason that computer OS have this silly fixation about developing a 3D desktop. It turns out that Apple has something in their labs worthy of patenting. In the multidimensional desktop it appears that they want to take the familar parts of the OS X desktop and add depth, allowing you to stack documents or folders behind application icons on the floor of your desktop.

As Tom Krazit at cnet News noted many time these patented ideas never see the light of day but they are great for bloggers to write about and purists to complain about. Okay he didn’t quite say that but the idea is the same.

Putting CNN’s recent questionable hologram used during the U.S. Presidential election aside the fact is that it is inevitable that at some point we will have some sort of 3D projection for our computers. Not just for industrial use or big TV news networks but for regular folks like you and me. If this is indeed the case than maybe the picture above and video I found on the TechEBlog are the beginning experiments in consumer level 3D hologram projection.

The Holocube; available in 10-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch models, is a projector that stores video in the self contained hard drive and uses the video to create 3D holograms. The device can store up to 18 hours of compressed video at 4Mb/s which is turned into the hologram display with a flick of a switch. Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything on price but you can always head over to the Holocube site and do some hunting around while you watch some additional videos.
