Kid Rock is running for Senate in 2018. Yes, really! After rumors swirled for months in the Michigan GOP scene, the Trump-supporting rocker finally confirmed via Twitter on Wednesday that the new “Kid Rock For Senate” website is real and that he would be making a “major announcement” soon. According to the Inquisitr, Rock has not yet filed his candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, but he has plenty of time to make it official. In the meantime, Kid Rock’s shocking decision has garnered a variety of reactions from the public based on their perceptions of the right-wing rocker. But what would Kid Rock in the Senate mean for Democracy?
Congress Is Dominated By Lawyers And Career Politicians
While some have reacted negatively to a 46-year-old musician with no political experience running for a U.S. Senate position, I find myself in stark disagreement. If we are to have a true Democracy in America, our elected representatives must reflect the populace. According to the Congressional Research Service, half of all current U.S. Senators list “law” as a prior career, with 55 percent holding law degrees. This is grossly disproportionate considering that practicing lawyers make up only 0.36 percent of the U.S. population, according to Wise Geek.
Along with Congress being dominated by lawyers, it is also controlled by individuals who have past experience in politics. According to the Congressional Research Service, 50 percent of Senators have held positions in the House, 266 Congress members in both houses have held positions as state or territorial legislators, 43 were mayors, and 12 were former state governors. At first glance it may seem advantageous for a politician to have past political experience. However, what this really shows is a link to the establishment that is already in power. If true Democracy is the goal, an outsider with no political ties or baggage is the best person to represent constituents, since that person has a greater ability to display loyalty towards his or her voters.
Kid Rock Is A Patriot Who Cares About Americans
Along with being a refreshing reprieve from the deluge of lawyers and career politicians that are currently dominating the political landscape, a Senator Kid Rock would be good for America simply because he cares about Americans. According to the Inquisitr, Kid Rock visited the Middle East to entertain troops a total of seven times, with two visits occurring during Christmas. People Magazine reports that Rock made his first Middle Eastern trip in 2003 on a United Service Organizations tour of Iraq, Kuwait, and Qatar. On a Christmas tour in 2006, Rock reportedly sang and signed autographs for 16 hours while visiting U.S. troops at three camps in Kuwait and Iraq. Rock explained:
“This year for Christmas I wanted to make sure somebody was thanking our troops for their service, no matter what our views are on the current situation in Iraq.”
The rocker further illustrated his sense of sacrifice and humility when he explained why he was proud to spend Christmas with the troops:
“I could be spending Christmas with my family, but in my heart I know this is the right thing to do – not only for our men and women in service, but also to set an unselfish example for my son and send a strong message to the world to be thankful and think of others at Christmas time.”
According to MTV, Kid Rock’s 2010 album Born Free was created as a tribute to U.S. troops that Rock visited during his many tours to the Middle East, which he called a “rewarding, life-changing experience.”
According to the Inquisitr, Kid Rock has been described as “independent, hardworking, patriotic, and unafraid to share common sense solutions at the White House” by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who invited Kid Rock and musician Ted Nugent to accompany her to the White House to meet President Trump in April. While Kid Rock was initially a Ben Carson fan, he eventually joined the Trump Train wholeheartedly, even going so far as to sell a “God, Guns, and Trump” T-shirt on his website.
The Inquisitr reports that Kid Rock has been an icon among Republicans for years. Among his most notable political endeavors is campaigning for Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential election. However, this doesn’t mean that Rock aligns with Republicans on every issue. Although he is a huge collector of guns and a supporter of the Second Amendment, he differs from conservatives on social issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, according to the Independent Journal Review. Taking a moderate stance, Rock has stated, “As an ordained minister I don’t look forward to marrying gay people, but I’m not opposed to it.”

Rocking The Senate In The Age Of Trump
Now is the best time for Kid Rock to run for Senate. If a real estate developer turned reality TV star can be elected President of the United States, a rocker can be elected into the Senate. The election of Donald Trump has proven that you don’t need political experience, law education, or the plastic, polished demeanor of a career politician to be elected into public office. The 2016 election has proven that America is tired of business as usual and is ready to shake things up. In 2018, don’t be surprised when you see Michigan elect Senator Kid Rock!
