Johnny Depp can relax and enjoy the last laugh when it comes to Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Dead Men Tell No Tales brought in $326 million worldwide in just four days, according to Deadline, and Japan hasn’t even opened the film yet.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with Johnny Depp is very popular in Japan. The last two Pirates of the Caribbean films grossed about $91 million each, according to Deadline.
Pirates of the Caribbean 5, even without including Japan, scored the 12th largest international opening in movie history, according to Vulture. This should drive the point home that Johnny Depp is loved worldwide, and Jack Sparrow cannot be stopped with bad reviews and bad press.
Johnny Depp will reportedly get 20 percent of the back end for each Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which Business Insider speculates will be about $40 million. That is reported to be in addition to the $20 million Depp is said to have been paid upfront.
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 fell just short of its $80 million projection in the United States, bringing in just $77 million. Still, Dead Men Tell No Tails was the top movie for the Memorial Day weekend, despite bad reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and other critics.
Johnny Depp is a box-office money magnet despite having a bit of an off year or two, but his overall track record is phenomenal. Johnny Depp had nothing to worry about. Audience reactions to Pirates of the Caribbean 5 were favorable. Rotten Tomatoes critics were especially nasty, but the audience reviews seem to invalidate the critic’s point of view. A random audience reviewer, Ryan D, says it well.
“Amazing movie! These critics must not enjoy anything!”
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 with Johnny Depp has been met with a huge worldwide success despite what the critics say. Rotten Tomatoes have not been the only ones throwing rotten tomatoes though. This year, the Pirates of the Caribbean icon has gotten a lot of bad press in what might be considered multiple smear campaigns, but Johnny can rest assured the public still loves him.
While Pirates of the Caribbean is certainly his most lucrative role, Depp has been a truly amazing actor in just about every film he’s ever been in. Johnny Depp’s acting style is completely unique.
Johnny Depp is an international movie icon with few rivals in the industry. Of those, Johnny is virtually the only man who can handle a certain type of quirky role, a role like Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Johnny Depp is most likely the only man alive who could have ever been Pirates of the Caribbean’s Jack Sparrow, despite the fact Jim Carrey was initially offered the role. Depp’s Jack Sparrow is witty, charming, and incredibly sexy, but at the same time, he is very funny. It is hard for most actors to be sexy, funny and quirky all at the same time, but Johnny has done it so many time in so many roles.
As Vulture points out, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck are fairly interchangeable for most roles. They are the greats, but there isn’t one among them who could portray the Mad Hatter, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, or Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean as Johnny Depp did.
“If you have a certain type of eccentric, larger-than-life character, and you need to make him work within the constraints of a blockbuster that will play as well in China as it does Ohio — in other words, a character who’s weird, but not weird enough to be played by Joaquin Phoenix — Depp is probably your guy.”
Johnny Depp owns the role of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, and the hearts of millions or perhaps billions of fans worldwide. Critics and bad press might strike out at this icon, but they will never truly supplant him in the eyes of fans.
