NASA is deciding whether or not to approve the construction of a human-tended outpost close to the far side of the Moon.

According to a February 3 memo leaked to Space.com, a team is being put together to devise a plan for exploring a part of space known as ‘Earth-Moon libration point 2′ or EML-2.

What’s a libration point? In short, it’s a part of space where the gravitational pull of two massive objects (in this case, the Earth and the Moon) cancel one another out. This means objects (such as an outpost, say) can remain in that one spot, held rigidly in place by gravity.

Establishing a waypoint close to the Moon that can be used by humans would open up all sorts of possibilities, including the exploration of near-lunar space, the Moon, the moons of Mars and eventually Mars itself. Should an astronaut-manned waypoint be constructed at EML-2, it would represent the farthest man has traveled from Earth. A mission to an EML-2 outpost would reportedly have astronauts traveling 15 percent farther from Earth than the Apollo astronauts. The length of their stay in deep space would be trebled.

NASA would require participation from commercial and/or academic sectors to proceed with the construction of an outpost. Such a construction would use NASA’s already-proposed heavy-lift rocket, also known as the Space Launch System, and the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle as “foundational elements.”

The research team mentioned in NASA’s memo has been given a deadline to complete its study of March 30, 2012.

As well as beefing up its navy, the Middle East nation is reportedly preparing craft that can be used in suicide attacks. However, the commander of U.S. naval forces says Iran can be prevented from blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital route that is used to transport one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.

In recent weeks, Iran has threatened to block the Strait and disrupt shipping in the Gulf, and even launch attacks on U.S. forces in the region should sanctions shut down its oil trade. Iran’s renewed focus on bulking up its navy would suggest it’s preparing for a possible confrontation. U.S. Vice Admiral Mark Fox told Reuters:

“They have increased the number of submarines … they increased the number of fast attack craft. Some of the small boats have been outfitted with a large warhead that could be used as a suicide explosive device. The Iranians have a large mine inventory. We have watched with interest their development of long range rockets and short, medium and long range ballistic missiles and of course … the development of their nuclear program.”

Smaller enemy craft have caused problems for the U.S. Navy in the past. In 1996, al-Qaeda suicide bombers attacked the destroyer U.S.S. Cole and killed 17 sailors on board. While the U.S. Navy is undoubtedly more powerful and more well-equipped than its Iranian equivalent, the prospect of facing small, fast vessels remains a concern to the U.S. However, Fox insists the navy is prepared for an attack at any time:

“We are very vigilant, we have built a wide range of options to give the president and we are ready… What if it happened tonight? We are ready today.”

The European Union enforced an embargo on Iranian oil last month. That begins on July 1, by which time Iran’s response may well be easier to predict.

Los Angeles lawyer Ray Boucher sued the LA Archidocese on behalf of 500 plaintiffs and now he has revealed that 200 more priests suspected of committing sexual abuse are likely being hidden by the church in California.

According to MSNBC the location of those priests have not been revealed because they have not been convicted of sex abuse. Because no convictions were made laws pertaining to identifying the location of pedophiles doesn’t apply to them.

Boucher says of that situation:

“Many, if not all, of these priests have admitted to sexual abuse. They live within a mile of 1,500 playgrounds, schools and daycare centers.”

After settling Bouchers lawsuit for $600 million in 2007 the L.A. Archdiocese refused to accept any wrongdoing on behalf of its pedophile priests.

The lawyer says the church has now allowed many of their accused priests to retire or hide out until the statue of limitations runs out on their crimes which would make it impossible to file lawsuits against the church.

“By enabling these priests to be hidden for so many years, the church protected them from being prosecuted,” said Boucher.

Officials for the church claim the right to privacy since the priests have not been convicted of crimes, a California judge has called that statement out, ordering that files for many of those priests be revealed in the coming weeks.

Hollywood Actor Samuel L. Jackson has admitted to something that appears to be the news of the century.  He admitted he voted for then Senator Barack Obama because he was black.

In an interview with the New York Post on race in politics Jackson said,

“I voted for Barack because he was black. Cause that’s why other folks vote for other people — because they look like them.”

He was asked whether it was a little cynical to vote for a candidate based on his race and not based on the issues.  He responded that he didn’t feel any guilt for that because Obama is a politician and it doesn’t matter what any politician says, as they all will say anything to get elected.

He said,

“That’s American politics, pure and simple. [Obama’s] message didn’t mean [anything] to me. In the end, he’s a politician. I just hoped he would do some of what he said he was gonna do. I know politicians … lie cause they want to get elected,”

The African-American vote was huge for President Obama in the 2008 election.  Statisticians say that for any Democrat to win the White House they need to pull at least 80% of the black vote.  In 2004, John Kerry pulled in 88% and in 2012 Obama pulled in 95% of the black vote.

President Obama faces a bit of a problem with Black voters this time around as black leaders, who were somewhat skeptical of Obama in the first place, are not thrilled with the President’s results for the black community.

Passengers aboard a US Airways flight from Charlotte to Charleston, W. Va., were given a little scare on Sunday when the plane’s pilot was forced to make an emergency landing.

The plane landed after airline crew heard a “loud and unsettling noise” only a short period of time after the flights 2:30 p.m. ESt takeoff.

The plane quickly turned around and landed at the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport one hour after it took off.

After landing all 44 US Airways passengers were placed on different flights to their final destinations.

At this time the airline is investigating the cause of the loud engine noise which is unknown at this time.

Oil prices in the North Sea have spiked since January causing gasoline prices in the U.S. to increase by 12 cents a gallon in a nationwide survey.

In the latest Lundberg Survey gasoline prices rose to $3.51 per gallon, that survey examines 2,500 filling stations across the United States.

The study also found that West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. benchmark fuel remained flat from January 20 through Friday.

During that same period Brent crude, the European benchmark traded up by $7.45 per barrel during the same period.

Currently increases in the North Sea are blamed on several factors including lower then expected production, tensions between most of the world and Iran and a cut off of southern oil in the newly formed South Sudan region. It’s still unclear how much prices have increased because of sanctions placed on the Iran Central Bank by the United States.

Lundberg expected prices to “inch up” at least a few more cents over the next few weeks.

The saying “sharing is caring” has a whole new meaning in many gang infested parts of the United States where gang bangers are taking to the streets while using “community” guns that are free for the taking.

Perhaps it’s a sign of a bad economy but in many case more communal gun programs are starting. According to one Bronx assistant DA:

“The gangs are younger, and their resources are less.”

Even with the guns emerging more often a New York investigator told the New York Times that it still surprises investigators to learn of the communal gun program:

“We get a lot more ballistic matches than we ever have before. It’s amazing. You go, how the hell did that match up to that shooting?”

In the meantime State Senator Malcolm A. Smith points out that the type of organization gang members are engaging in could make them good producing members for the business community:

“You have a business model behind this concept, a schedule, which is a shame. If they used that intellect for something positive, who knows how successful that person could be?”

While from an economic standpoint the program likely makes sense to gang members, a simple arrest on attempted murder could lead to a life in prison when a communal gun is confiscated and matched to prior shootings that the arrested gang member may have had no part in.

From autobiographies to biographies that range from humorist to scandalous books about the famous to the infamous books provide a look into the life and experiences of those people.

One of the most famous people in history of course would have to be Abraham Lincoln so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that there has been a lot of books written about him, one of the newest is a humorous look at him as being one of the first vampire hunters, but I’m willing to bet you don’t know how many have been written.

Well the people at Ford’s Theater Center for Education and Leadership decided to find out by building a tower in the lobby of the center with one copy of each book.

Three stories later the magic number of books written about the 16th president of the United States turns out to  be 15,000 titles.

A Washington state Health Department spokesman says the latest count stands at 229 reports of illness among people who attended the event, but could continue to climb as the total number of spectators at the competitions was close to 5,000.

“That number is likely to go up, because there were something on the order of 3,000 people in attendance, plus 1,000 plus who were actual participants,” said Washington State Health Department spokesman Donn Moyer.

Following an investigation, health experts found the norovirus outbreak was likely precipitated by people who were ill in public, said Suzanne Pate, spokeswoman for the Snohomish Health District.

“Somebody arrived at the event sick,” said Pate, noting that janitorial crews were called to clean up vomit in a restroom and on an adjacent walkway. Those areas were likely exposure sites for the cheer and dance teams, she said.

Norovirus, sometimes called cruise ship disease, is part of highly contagious group of viruses that cause acute gastroenteritis (the stomach flu) in humans. It circulates frequently, sickening an estimated 20 million people nationally each year.

People with norovirus are contagious from the moment they begin feeling ill to at least three days and as much as two weeks after recovery, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Smoking marijuana even a couple hours before you get behind the wheel of a vehicle can double your chances of getting into a car accident according to a recent study conducted by Associate Professor Mark Asbridge from Dalhousie University in Halifax.

In the latest issue of the British Medical Journal the study found:

“To our knowledge this meta-analysis is the first to examine the association between acute cannabis use and the risk of motor vehicle collisions in real life.”

To conduct the study researchers examined nine observational studies with 49,411 accident victims, they then ruled out accidents where other drugs or alcohol was involved.

While the study found a connection between pot smoking and car accidents researchers admit that the correlation between the amount of tetrahydrocannabionol (THC) in the blood stream and other incidents are still unclear.

Researchers write:

“Although we did not examine dose effects on the risk and severity of collisions, studies of fatally injured drivers found higher amounts of tetrahyrocannabinol in the blood.”

Researchers say more study’s are needed while noting:

“[TCH] concentrations might also be important, with minor collisions more likely than fatal collisions to involve drivers with lower concentrations of cannabis.”

The CBC provides more information about road side testing, noting that current evaluations don’t use enough benchmarks to make a final conclusion regarding the effects of marijuana use and accidents caused by pot induced drivers.

While driving a school bus containing six children home from Chantilly Montessori Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina, bus driver Lindora Richardson smelled smoke. Richardson was able to get all of the children out of the bus shortly before it bust into flames.

School district spokeswoman Tahira Stalberte said:

“We are very proud of her and for her following proper procedures. It could have taken a very different turn had she not done her job correctly.”

CNN reports that Richardson said that she pulled the bus over when she smelled something burning. Smoke then started pouring from the dashboard and Richardson moved all the children toward the rear exit. The bus driver said that the students were calm and exited the bus one by one through the emergency exit.

McCaltchy reports that officials are not sure what caused the fire. Derek Graham, transportation chief for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, said that schools are required to do maintenance on their buses every 30 days. Graham said:

“It’s pretty rare that one burns to the degree of this one, but it’s not unheard of… School buses are still the safest way for kids to get to and from school. We’re thankful everybody did their job and got out of harm’s way.”

Nello Ferrara was the chairman of Chicago’s Ferrara Pan Candy Co., which makes about 1 million pounds of iconic candy a year in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to a report by the NY Times, Ferrara began operations at the company in 1947 looking to accelerate the work his father, Ferrera Pan founder Salvatore, started in Chicago in 1908. A few years after joining the company, Ferrara Pan began rolling out new candies, including the Atomic Fireball.

Ferrara hatched the idea of the spicy FireBalls in 1954 after serving in post-atomic-bomb Occupied Japan, his CEO son told the Sun Times. Lemonhead followed in 1962. Ferrara joked that his inspiration came from his son’s head, which he said was shaped like, yes, a lemon.

Other notable Ferrara confections include Boston Baked Beans, Jawbusters and Red Hots.

“He was an icon in the industry,” said Larry Graham, president of the National Confectioners Association. “He was known for helping out other candy companies in distress, for cementing deals with just a handshake, and for being a great ambassador for the industry.”

Besides his son, Nello Ferrara is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn, and two daughters, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Nello Ferrara, “Lemonhead” and “Atomic Fire Balls” Candy Creator, Dies at 93 is a post from: The Inquisitr

Louisiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Len Marie told MSNBC a driver was headed eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-10 near LaPlace early Friday when his vehicle crashed head-on with another vehicle with four people inside.

The car that had been traveling the wrong way burst into flames.

“Everything was burned pretty bad,” Marie said. “We’re not sure why he was traveling the wrong way.”

While the driver of the car going the wrong way died on the scene, the passengers of the other vehicle were taken to a hospital in “very critical” condition, according to police. They later died from their injuries.

Marie also added that an 18-wheeler sideswiped the wreck and another vehicle hit the 18-wheeler.

The drivers of those vehicles suffered only minor injuries.

Louisiana state troopers say the westbound lanes of I-10 were closed and traffic was being diverted.

The fatal I-10 crash occurred around 3 a.m. west of LaPlace, about 25 miles west of New Orleans.

LaPlace I-10 Crash: Fiery Accident Leaves 5 Dead in Louisiana is a post from: The Inquisitr

A 25-year-old man is in custody and a 7-year-old girl’s family is shaken after the child narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt at a Walmart in Atlanta, Georgia.

Second grader Brittney Baxter was home sick from school due to a bout of strep throat, and accompanied her mother to Walmart to pick up some groceries. While Baxter’s mother shopped just a few aisles away from the child, police say that suspect Thomas Woods approached the girl and grabbed her.

While little Brittney must have been terrified by the snatching attempt, store surveillance video shows the man carrying the struggling child through a toy section of the Atlanta Walmart. But she fought back, kicking and screaming, and eventually the man released her, allowing the child to escape back to her mother. As Brittney resisted the attack, her assailant attempted to stop her calling for help. (Watch the clip of Brittney Baxter fighting her kidnapper, below.)

Just a few hours after the terrifying incident, Baxter told reporters:

“I was screaming and kicking and trying to get away and he put his hand over my mouth… He just dropped me and went and ran off.”

Although Brittney’s mom Georgeann is still very upset over the incident, her daughter has advice for other kids who may find themselves in the same scary situation. She says to “always scream, try to scream and kick as hard as you can and go get someone you can trust.”

Brittney’s alleged captor was arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping, but denies being present at the store when the incident occurred. In the past, he served four years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

The victims, Billy Clay Payne Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth, had recently deleted Jenelle Potter from their friends list on Facebook.

Following the “unfriending,” Marvin Potter, the 60-year-old father of Jenelle, shot the couple in the head and slit Payne Jr.’s throat.

Their bodies were discovered by a neighbor around five hours later.

According to reports, Mr Payne was found in his bedroom while Miss Hayworth was discovered in the nursery, where her eight-month old baby was found unharmed in her arms.

Also charged in the murders is Marvin’s friend, 38-year-old Jamie Curd, who was said to have had romantic feelings for Jenelle.

Jenelle Potter lives at home with her parents and is “constantly on Facebook,” local Sheriff Mike Reece told Reuters.

“We’ve had murders, but nothing like this. This is just senseless,” Reece said, adding that Potter has a history of getting angry when people de-friend her on Facebook.

According to court documents, on May 7, 2011, another woman actually took Potter to court. Lindsey Thomas filed a telephone harassment complaint against Potter.

“Jenelle Potter whom I’ve never met has been harassing me for months now,” Thomas said in her affidavit of complaint. “She has called my phone anywhere from 5-20 times a day. I have asked her on more than one occasion to quit calling me, but have had no luck. This all started because I deleted her off my Facebook. She continues to lie and say stuff about me all over her Facebook. I have proof of Phone calls and stuff on Facebook.”

The Payne-Hayworth killing took place a month ago, but local police arrested the two men responsible on Tuesday and charged them with two counts of first degree murder on Wednesday.

The men were arraigned Wednesday; Marvin remains in jail on a $200,000 bond while Jamie’s is set at $1.5 million.

Curd and Potter are slated to return to court March 7.

Stephen Colbert used to be a stand up guy. He used to fight for the rights of Americans. He used to be funny. But then he started taking money from anonymous donors through his SuperPac. Nancy Pelosi has just released a new ad that makes Stephen Colbert public enemy number 1.

“Stephen Colbert used to be my friend,” Pelosi says. “But since the day he started his SuperPac, taking secret money from special interest groups, he’s been out of control…. I hear he doesn’t even like kittens.”

Pelosi may be joking about a few things in the ad (her close relationship with Newt Gingrich) but the DISCLOSE ACT is a real piece of legislation. According to the Facebook.com/StopColbert page, DISCLOSE 2012 (HR 4010) was just introduced by Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD).

The DISCLOSE ACT 2012 reads:

“To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to provide for additional disclosure requirements for corporations, labor organizations, and other entities, and for other purposes.”

The US Postal Service is in bad shape, the company wasn’t even able to make a profit after a huge surge in gift shipments occurred over the holiday season.

Officials on Thursday announced that the agency lost $3.3 billion in the holiday quarter, $3 billion worse then the losses the mail service reported in the same period of 2010.

At the current rate the United States Postal Service will run out of money by October 2012 as traditional mail delivery continues to decline. USPS executives claim a 6% drop off in traditional sales for the first fiscal quarter ended Dec. 31.

In a statement regarding the company’s losses the postmaster general said:

“Technology continues to have a major impact on how our customers use the mail.”

USPS hopes to reclaim a profitable structure by growing out of the daily mail delivery sector with more focus on shipping services, however the company is still battling with large pension plan payments, six day delivery and over-staffing which has pushed down profit potential. If USPS had not been forced to pay $5.5 billion towards future retiree health benefits on an annual basis last year it would have only lost $200 million. The postal service is the only agency required to make those government mandated pension plan payments.

Floridians beware, thousands of Giant African snails are slowly making their way across the state. The Giant African Snail, which can grow up to 8 inches in length, have invaded a residential area in Miami-Dade County and are leaving a trail of eaten plants behind them.

ABC reports that Florida officials aren’t exactly sure how the Giant African Snails got into town, but they’re worried that they will have a drastic effect on the ecosystem. The snails consume at least 500 different types of plants. Officials also say that the snails can destroy stucco and plaster.

Denise Feiber, Public Information Director for Florida’s Division of Plant Industry, said:

“We have collected over a thousand so far and we have only just begun. They leave excrement all over the sides of houses. They’re very nasty. These things are not the cute little snails that you see.”

The Giant African Snails are eating up plants, destroying houses, and according to Feiber, they can also spread disease. Feiber says that the snails can carry a parasite that causes meningitis.

ABC reports that Floridians have battled the snails in the past. In the 1960s a boy smuggled a few Giant African Snails into the country and raised them as pets. When his grandmother got tired of them, she released them in her garden. 10-years, $1 million, and 18,000 snails later Florida bid farewell to the giant snails. Feiber said:

“It took the state 10 years to eradicate and it was a million dollar eradication program and that was in the late 1960s, early 1970s. Eighteen thousand snails were collected.”

Officials aren’t sure how the snails got back into Florida, but they are investigating the matter.  Charles Stewart, a man who practices the African religion Ifa Orisha, is currently a person of interest.

A group of marines are playing the stupid card after posting a photo of a group of scout snipers posing in front of a Nazi flag. The marines’ Nazi flag photo stirred up some controversy today but the marines insist that they didn’t know the SS symbol was linked to the Nazi party.

The Global Post reports that the photo was taken in September 2010 in the Sangin province. Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Gregory Wolf said that the use of the symbol in the US military is unacceptable. Wolf told the BBC:

“Certainly, the use of the ‘SS runes’ is not acceptable and Scout Snipers have been addressed concerning this issue.”

The Atlantic Wire reports that the scout snipers found the flag and thought that the SS would be a cool symbol to represent the group. The photo was posted to the KAC blog with the caption: “Group picture is of the 1st Recon BN Charlie Co. in Sangin, Afghanistan in support of 3rd BN 5th Marines in September of 2010.  The “SS” flag has been adopted and used by the Marines in reference to Scout Sniper.”

The marines later claimed that they had no idea that the SS symbol was tied to the Nazi party.

Camp Pendleton spokeswoman Maj. Gabrielle Chapin, said:

 ”I don’t believe that the Marines involved would have ever used any type of symbol associated the Nazi Germany military criminal organization that committed mass atrocities in WWII.”

But some people aren’t buying the marines’ story. How could they not know about the symbol? How could they find a Nazi flag and not have it turned in to a proper authority? The Military Religious Freedom Foundation in Washington is calling for a full investigation into the marines’ Nazi flag photo.

Michael O’Leary, the CEO of low cost airline Ryanair proved how little class he has today.  While walking into an airport in Spain, he walked past a group of protestors who were outside protesting the sudden closure of Spainair, O’Leary flashed them the victory symbol.  He then went inside the airport and had this to say,

“I’d like to thank all of our fans outside for helping us to promote the arrival of Ryanair in Bilbao today,”

O’leary has always been an eclectic character, and a darling of the media…for all the wrong reasons.

He has instituted a company policy that employees are not permitted to charge their cellphones while at work.  His reasoning? It is a theft of company electricity.  He also wanted to close all bathrooms in the plane except for one and begin charging for access to that.

He also came up with a doozy. He wants to start offering in air porn.  That is correct, in air porn.  Citing the money that hotels currently make by offering access to adult films he wants to start offering the service on the planes.  A passenger will be able to purchase a token card which can be used on your iPad or laptop computer.  I wonder if that comes with a complimentary trip to the bathroom.

The issue that he is not taking into account is privacy.  I don’t know what woman would feel comfortable sitting next to a passenger who was watching porn on the flight next to her, but maybe that is just me.
