Emma Watson showed off her style in a Chanel dress at the premiere of her new film, The Bling Ring, at the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival on Thursday. The actress sported a monochrome Chanel gown on the red carpet that featured a sequined bodice and a cut-out back.

To top it all off, Watson added three sparkling cuffs on her upper earlobe to complete her look for day two at the festival. She took to the red carpet with co-stars Katie Chang, Taissa Farmiga, and Claire Julien, while director Sophia Coppola was also in attendance.

The 23-year-old went with a classic look at the premiere of her new film and it all came together with black heels and a sweetheart neckline. She strutted her stuff with a grin as she posed for photos and spoke with reporters while joining the rest of the cast before the showing.

Though Watson’s shown signs of fashion-disaster in the past, the actress has decided on a more vintage and classic look in her most recent appearances that’s been received quite well. The focus Thursday was on The Bling Ring premiere, her third film since breaking through as “Hermione Granger” in the Harry Potter series.

Emma Watson had the spotlight on the red carpet as she shined in her two-tone Chanel dress, but she remained focused on her new film. The Bling Ring gave her the chance to expand as an actress outside of her Harry Potter persona, though she isn’t hiding from the hit movie series that led to her rise within the industry.

“I’m not trying to run away from it (Harry Potter),” she said during a press conference for The Bling Ring. “I’m very proud of the work that I did. I’m just really enjoying having the chance to transform into new roles.”

Watson will also be featured in Seth Rogen’s upcoming comedy, This Is The End, as well as the dramatic biblical film, Noah, which is set for release in 2014 with co-star Russell Crowe.

Ashlee Simpson’s backless gown stunned the crowd on the red carpet at the 2013 American Ballet Theatre Opening Night Spring Gala at NYC’s Lincoln Center on Monday. The 28-year-old showed off her amazing look in a black lace design by Alice + Olivia.

The backless gown featured feathered trim at the waist along with the cut-out back and she topped it off with emerald green earrings. Not many people can pull off a pony-tail and look great on a red carpet, but Simpson did just that.

Her fashionable style turned heads at the NYC Gala and she even showed some skin while pulling off the dress with a little attitude and flair. She out-shined multiple stars on the night, including model Coco Rocha and actresses Lucy Liu and Uma Thurman who were also in attendance.

It’s easy to note that Ashlee Simpson’s backless gown stole the show before it even started. Her fashion sense has turned her into a red carpet icon, though it didn’t always look that way.

Simpson has distanced herself from the pop star look she once knew and is now as glamorous as ever. This isn’t the first time her style’s made headlines as she stunned the crowd at the opening of the Marquee Nightclub in Sydney, Australia in April of 2012.

The actress wore an olive-colored Roberto Cavalli dress to the event which featured a python-print. Monday she looked even better, and here’s a Twitter fan page post to prove it:

There’s no telling if the flowers came from ex-husband Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boys, though he’s recently credited Simpson for being a great mother.

“I feel like we both realize that we’re parents and we’re in it for our kid. That’s made it really easy,” Wentz said on Bravo’s April 15th episode of Watch What Happens Live. “I feel like, as a mom, she’s awesome. She’s an awesome mom and we get along really well when it comes to our kid now.”

The busy mother and Pete Wentz split in 2011, but it hasn’t stopped Simpson from strutting her stuff and enjoying herself at the occasional event.

An Amanda Bynes clothing line is being promised by the actress mostly known for her roles in Nickelodeon shows and the movie Easy A.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Amanda Bynes had a nose job job to remove “webbing” from her face. Supposedly the skin between Amanda Bynes’ eyes did not look quite right to her.

Amanda Bynes says her clothing line signals an end to her career as an actress:

“I am retired as an actor. I am moving to New York to launch my career. I am going to do a fashion line… I am not talking about being arrested for DUI because I don’t drink, and I don’t drink and drive. It is all false.”

Police and a judge might have another story to tell on that account. Amanda Bynes recently pleaded no contest to driving on a suspended license.

Amanda Bynes’ clothing line won’t be this child star’s first foray into fashion. Amanda Bynes previously created a collection called “Dear By Amanda” for now closed budget retailer Steve & Barry’s (anyone else miss that clothing store?).

So where will the Amanda Bynes clothing line draw inspiration from?

“My line will be a mixture of sick styles, and it’s going to be for everybody. I love Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s clothing line, Elizabeth and James. And I love how Justin Bieber dresses.”

Maybe if you like spiky yellow hats, gas masks, and clashing colors and patterns. Just as long as Amanda Bynes doesn’t try to resurrect Justin Bieber’s old haircut. Still, Amanda Bynes’ clothing line will apparently be more for fun:

“I’ll design clothes because I want to, not because I need the money.”

Amanda Bynes Clothing Line Mimics Justin Bieber, Features Her ‘Sick Style’ is a post from: The Inquisitr

Ottavio Missoni, founder of Italian fashion label Missoni, died in his northern Italian home Thursday. He was 92 years old.

Missoni SpA issued a statement saying that Missoni “passed away serenely” in his his home in the town of Sumirago, which is also home to the company’s headquarters. According to Italian media, Missoni was treated last week for a respiratory problem.

Missoni and his wife, Rosita Jelmini, founded Missoni in 1953. The couple’s three children are also involved in the family business: daughter Angela was originally the womenswear designer, but took over menswear beginning with the Fall/Winter 2008/2009 collection; son Luca became the head Creative Director/Director after that. Eldest son Vittorio was the Marketing Director.

Sadly, Vittorio Missoni and his wife Maurizia Castiglioni, as well as four others, disappeared after taking off from a resort in Los Roques, an archipelago 80 miles north off the coast of Venezuela. After three days of searching, there was no sign of the six missing people. The cause of the disappearance has yet to be explained,  but Italy’s national air safety agency said the owner of the plane did not have a certificate to operate. The pilot’s license had also expired in November 2012.

Vittorio had a hand in marketing Missoni to Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea.

Ottavio Missoni was born February 11, 1921 in what is now Dubrovnik, Croatia. Missoni often said he ended up in the fashion industry practically by accident — Jelmini’s family owned a textile factory and produced shawls. When Missoni and Jelmini first founded their company, they produced athletic wear — Missoni was a former track-and-field star and competed in the 1948 Olympics. It was during the Olympics that he met Rosita, and the two were married in Italy. The couple developed intricate machinery that enabled them to create the colorful zigzag patterns that became the company’s signature.

Missoni quickly expanded, and eventually constructed its main factory in Sumirago. The couple showed their first collection in Milan in 1966. In 2011, Missoni collaborated with Target, and the collection broke many of the store’s records.

That partially melted penis candle and Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries dislikes the idea of fat people wearing A&F’s overpriced hoodies is not news, as the mall store head has long been laboring under the delusion that people who are in any way “cool” shop at the mall and his store in particular.

Jeffries (who seems to be exhibiting the horrible effects of a combination of cash, possible Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Jocelyn Wildenstein excessive levels of plastic surgery) may not be much to look at, but as Abercrombie CEO, he does wield a certain amount of power over teen markets before teens can go off to college and not be forced to don mall wear.

Does he use it for good? Nah, the middle-aged wannabe perma-teen instead has long been employing his position as Abercrombie head to be a total jerk to kids who don’t fit in — mainly fat kids, and mainly girls. Because men who marginalize and shame female children are always the most secure and not-evil.

In the past, the following words fell out of Jeffries’ grossly misshapen mouth as he discussed A&F’s marketing strategy, which amounts to “no fatties.” (Though given the cost of Abercrombie clothes relative to their quality, one might be tempted to call it a “cruelty tax.”)

Jeffries said last year:

“We hire good-looking people in our stores because good-looking people attract other good-looking people … And we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don’t market to anyone other than that.”

No mention of fat people, but a definite looks binary that seems to exclude variation in what is “good looking” overall, as if there’s one way — though we have to ask, how did Jeffries get the job then, because … ?

Anyway, Jeffries wants you and your fat ass to know that no matter how much further removed from the hell that was high school you are now, people like him still want to enforce the primitive social structure and also, screw you fatties.

That the Abercrombie CEO doesn’t like fat women is fine, everyone is entitled to an opinion and a marketing strategy. That he’s working out this body hate (after moving on from his own deformed face) to diffuse it over teen girls? Not so much.

Here’s what Jeffries said back in 2006 about the A&F marketing strategy — which works so well the brand is floundering right now:

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids … Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary?”

He continues:

“Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla. You don’t alienate anybody, but you don’t excite anybody, either.”

Generally, excitement over excluding people results in Klan rallies and racist country clubs, but okay, Mike Jeffries.

The issue is at hand again this week after the author of The New Rules Of Retail, Robin Lewis, confirmed that Jeffries’ ugly marketing strategy is meant particularly to exclude fat girls — because fat guys can be like, athletes or something:

“He doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people … He doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they’re one of the ‘cool kids.’”

Lewis concludes:

“Abercrombie is only interested in people with washboard stomachs who look like they’re about to jump on a surfboard.”

The Met Gala 2013 fashion soirée Monday night — fashion’s unofficial party of the year — was billed as a celebration of punk at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Although the theme was Punk: From Chaos to Culture, mostly it was a shameless celebration of pop culture with very little understanding of the political roots or the genuine anger behind real punk. Vogue livestream interviewer Billy Norwich even managed to embarrass himself by cutting off punk icon Vivienne Westwood.

Some of the costumes simply had no relevance to authentic punk. I mean, honestly. Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lawrence? And I’ve got nothing against so-called honorary chairwoman Beyoncé but it’s a joke to pretend that she has the slightest feel for punk.

A lot of fans did like Madonna’s vaguely Betty Page inspired look. Hey, the 50s, the 70s…it’s all the same these days, right?

And Madonna is probably one of the few people old enough to remember punk who actually still looks great in her thigh-high black stockings.

Hands down for the worst costume of the night was Kim Kardashian’s maternity dress. In all fairness, it’s hard to be look heroin chic skinny and properly punk when you’re THAT pregnant.

But did she really, truly have to come dressed as your grandmother’s living room couch?

At 54, Madonna looked hotter than the 32-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians reality TV star — and Kardashian’s an entire generation younger.

But don’t take my word for it. Here are a couple of the many pictures tweeted from the event that forced me to draw that harsh conclusion:

Met Gala 2013 has been called “the party of the year” and the fashion industry’s Oscars, but its supposed celebration of punk fashion on Monday night left plenty of people calling it managed, controlled, and even whitebread. Maybe all you really have to know about the authenticity of the event is that the pop royalty Beyoncé was the honorary chairwoman. Sheesh.

I’ll leave it to others to gush about what such non-punk celebs as Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, or Cameron Diaz had to wear. The theme was “Punk: From Chaos to Culture,” but there was too much culture and too little chaos.

The thing about punk is that it’s all about keeping it real. And real doesn’t mean a completely invented publicity stunt such as honeymooning in Cuba and then pretending that President Obama griped about it, a lá Beyoncé hubby Jay-Z. At the end of the day, what authority did Jay-Z and Beyoncé really stand up to and who did they challenge?

Zip. That’s who. And that’s why they’re allowed to keep talking.

When the 72-year-old Vivienne Westwood, one of the doyennes of punk fashion and a well-known political activist, appeared on the red carpet, she had (as expected) made an unusual fashion choice. After all, we’re talking about the designer who came to public attention working with the late Malcolm McLaren — the manager of the iconic Sex Pistols, which was largely his invention. With their sense of style, they are sometimes credited with the very creation of punk.

When Westwood walked the Met Gala 2013 red carpet on the Vogue livestream last night, interviewer Billy Norwich asked what designer she was wearing.

It might have been obvious that at least one piece was handmade by Westwood herself — a huge laminated photograph of Wikileaks prisoner Bradley Manning pinned to her gown.

Ask a stupid question, Mr. Norwich.

Westwood’s reply? “When I did punk all those years ago…[it was about]justice…and a better world…I’ve got one more thing to say…”

But she didn’t get to say it. Norwich decided to cut it short and switched to co-host Hilary Rhoda’s video piece. Moments later, he was interviewing Kim Kardashian.

Really, Mr. Norwich? Kim Kardashian? The arch-villainess of shiny glossy mindlessness on the one night out of the year supposedly dedicated to punk?

Met Gala 2013 Celebrates Punk By Cutting Off Punk Icon is a post from: The Inquisitr

A no-wash shirt is being held up as the most cutting edge convergence of science, fashion and laziness — and it’s hard to imagine a situation in which this is not totally gross no matter how much it smells okay.

While a no-wash shirt means less laundry, the squick factor here is immense — and before anyone accuses me of prudishness or over-cleanliness, please note I fall firmly into the “jeans, bras and hoodies never get dirty” category. (Okay, so maybe I just do less laundry than most people, shoot me.)

The no-wash shirt is a scientific advance by startup Wool&Prince, and there’s a Kickstarter, because of course there is. CoolMaterial first covered the no-wash shirt, explaining that a company founder had worn the top for a whole hundred days and found it to be not disgusting based on smell:

“Why can’t all of our shirts just be like our jeans and hardly ever require a washing? Sounds like science fiction, but Wool & Prince made it style fact with their new line of shirts. W&P founder Mac put his potential product to the ultimate test by wearing it for ONE. HUNDRED. DAYS. STRAIGHT.”

Again, we are as enamored of the concept of no laundry as the next person who isn’t weirdly into doing laundry, but this whole no-wash shirt thing is just a bit implausible.

Even if the Wool&Prince top smells okay after you wear it 100 times, is it any less gross than if you Febreeze a regular shirt to death between wearings? Does it not get sweat and dead skin and sushi juice and bongwater on it like every other shirt?

It looks like we’re going to find out — the Kickstarter seeking to raise $30,000 for the no-wash shirt has well exceeded its goal because it looks like the internet is a bunch of no laundry doing bums.

Designer Kenneth Cole has once again found himself in hot water for using a major news event to talk about clothing.

After the Senate voted against the Toomey-Manchin gun control bill Wednesday, Cole tweeted, “Regardless of your stance on #backgroundchecks #gunreform – something we definitely don’t condone #tbt ’86.” The tweet then included a picture of an old quote that read, “Regardless of the right to bear arms, we in no way condone the right to bare feet.”

Five hours after that, Cole tweeted, “Retail seems to be slowing. The #StockMarket was down again, but I hear the Gun industry is still making a killing. #Bradybuzz” In between the two posts, he wrote, “Irony is just one more service I offer.”

Even with that tweet — which may or may not have been meant as a disclaimer for the previous tweet — The tweets did not go over well with other Twitter users, with many reactions along the lines of “Not again!”

Two years ago, when massive protests erupted in Cairo in attempt to over the dictatorship, Cole took the uprising as an opportunity to plug his new spring collection.

“Millions are in an uproar in #Cairo,” he wrote. “Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online.”

No one was amused by the tweet, and there were calls to boycott the brand, as well as a fake Twitter account that had been set up to mock the designer.

Cole apologized on Facebook shortly afterward.

“I apologize to everyone who was offended by my insensitive tweet about the situation in Egypt,” he wrote. “I’ve dedicated my life to raising awareness about serious social issues, and in hindsight my attempt at humor regarding a nation liberating themselves against oppression was poorly timed and absolutely inappropriate.”

The designer has yet to address these latest tweets.

Trash to Trend is introducing the world’s first mass produced “upcycled” clothing line, a substantial milestone for eco-conscious fashion connoisseurs.

Trash to Trend’s Upcycled Collection is the world’s first mass production of upcycled clothing. Trash to Trend advertises that this collection features products that are made with less water, less energy, and less production waste.

Upcycling is a means of recycling textile waste to create a product of higher quality. Fabric waste is not as dirty as it sounds. It refers to the byproducts of clothing design and production such as fabric swatches and fabric left over at the end of a roll.

Trash to Trend’s Upcycled Collection was designed by Reet Aus, a fashion, theatre, and film designer who completed her doctoral studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts. While there, she wrote a thesis proposing a “Trash to Trend” model allowing fashion designers to create clothing from pre- and post-consumer fabrics. Her intention was to lessen the damage done to the environment while still mass producing clothing.

“Together with my research team I’m now glad to present the brand as the first industrial upcycler in the world,” Aus says on her website. “We now know that upcycling can radically reduce the environmental impacts of global textile industry.”

According to Ecouterre, Aus targets her model at independent designers who want a sustainable solution to their textile-waste problem. Aus’s model includes a database that provides a real-time overview of how much textile waste is being produced in a specific region. She also suggests a web-based framework allowing for communication between waste producers, designers, and clients. The goal is to increase transparency.

The website for Trash to Trend’s Upcycled Collection provides transparency on a smaller scale by not only displaying each garment’s price but its designer, the location that provided the fabric waste used to make the garment, and the location of the manufacturer.

A Victoria’s Secret angel may be losing her wings.

Miranda Kerr is being dropped from the lingerie company, industry insiders told Us Magazine. The 29-year-old is being released after her three-year, $1 million contract was not renewed. A source told the magazine that Kerr had a “difficult reputation”  and another said she is “not a big seller for VS” like some of the other angels.

“They can still use her for catalogue, where she will get a day rate, but she doesn’t have to be an Angel to do that,” the first source told the magazine.

Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek said he has invited Kerr to walk in the 2013 fashion show.

“Miranda Kerr is one of the best models in the history of the business — and easily one of the most popular,” Razek said in a statement. ”She is also a consummate professional. Any rumors to the contrary are simply untrue.”

An insider told the New York Daily News that Kerr had demanded a “massive” salary from the lingerie company, and that she had been keeping an excessive number of international commitments.

This has been a rough year for the Aussie beauty. Last month, Kerr was involved in a car crash on a Los Angeles freeway. She was riding with an assistant when her car was hit by another vehicle, and it was reported that the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Kerr managed to walk away without any major injuries, but she was seen wearing a neck brace the day after the accident. The model’s husband, actor Orlando Bloom, took care of her after the crash.

Miranda Kerr began modeling when she was 13, and became a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2007. She is the first Australian model to participate in the VS campaign. She also represents the Australian fashion chain David Jones.

Iconic fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer died Sunday in Palm Beach, Florida. She was 81 years old.

An announcement on the clothing company’s Facebook page confirmed the sad news.

“Early this morning, Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau passed away peacefully in Palm Beach, surrounded by family and loved ones. Lilly has been a true inspiration to us and we will miss her,” the statement says. “In the days and weeks ahead we will celebrate all that Lilly meant to us. Lilly was a true original who has brought together generations through her bright and happy mark on the world.”

Lilly Pulitzer is best known for her bright and colorful floral print clothing. She designed a dress for schoolmate Jacqueline Kennedy — who was a fashion icon in her own right while she was First Lady — using “kitchen curtain material — and people went crazy,” Pulitzer said in her book Essentially Lilly: A Guide to Colorful Entertaining.

“They took off like zingo,” she added “Everybody loved them, and I went into the dress business.”

The idea for the dresses came from a juice stand Pulitzer had opened up in Palm Beach after she married Herbert (Peter) Pulitzer, grandson of publisher Joseph Pulitzer, in 1950. She wanted to make colorful dresses that would hide the stains from the juice and designed a sleeveless shift dress made out of bright printed cotton. When customers began falling in love with the dresses, she started producing more and selling them at her juice stand. After awhile, she sold more dresses than juice and decided to focus on designing and selling her “Lillys.”

Pulitzer became president of her own company, Lilly Pulitzer Inc., in 1959. Pulitzer designed clothes until 1984 when she realized she wasn’t having as much fun as she used to and retired. The entire Lilly Pulitzer clothing operation was closed down until 1993, when Sugartown Worldwide contacted Pulitzer and told her they wanted to revive the brand. She agreed and acted as a creative consultant, approving designs and collections and expanding into other product lines, including stationary, maternity clothes, and children’s and men’s clothes.

Lilly Pulitzer and Herbert Pulitzer, who had three children together, divorced in 1969. She married Enrique Rousseau shortly afterward. Her legal name was Lillian McKim Rousseau, but she continued to operate her clothing company under the name Lilly Pulitzer. Pulitzer and Rousseau remained married until his death in 1993.

The cause of Lilly Pulitzer’s death is currently unknown.

A Target flap over a “manatee gray” dress in plus sizes (the same style was labeled “dark heather gray” for standard size units) erupted after a Twitter user pointed out the inconsistency Wednesday.

Target’s manatee gray dress is a standard, kimono-sleeved maxi dress, on offer in both standard women’s sizes as well as in their plus-sized section.

Target shopper Susan Clemens spotted the seemingly insulting misstep yesterday, tweeting out an image of both the Mossimo Women’s Kimono Maxi Dress in sizes small through xx-large with the color option “dark heather gray” and the plus-size version of the same dress, where the identical color was labeled “manatee gray.”

To their credit, Target was quick to address the plus-sized “manatee dress” controversy and offered a plausible explanation. According to Target spokesman Joshua Thomas, the manatee color option is actually a commonly used hue for Target’s fabrics.

And like with many options, different departments were responsible for sourcing and entering data for the online listings of the Mossimo Women’s Kimono Maxi Dress — with one using the manatee color name and the other opting for dark heather gray.

Thomas says one entry was input manually while the other was auto-populated. He added:

“We apologize for any discomfort this might have caused and are working to update the name of the dress to reflect Dark Heather Gray. This was an unfortunate oversight and we’ll take it into consideration moving forward.”

Zara slave labor factories in Argentina using child workers are under investigation.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, modern slavery estimates suggest there are as many as 27 million people trapped in slavery worldwide. If these estimates are true, then this would make human slave traffickers more active today than they were at the height of the African slave trade of the past. Many are lured to other countries by the promise of money only to find the promise a nightmare.

The Zara fashion product line, popular for its mid-range priced fashion, has 1,1540 stores worldwide with many being located in English countries like the United States and England.

Investigators claim the Zara slave labor factories used immigrant workers, including children, were discovered producing clothes for the Zara fashion label in “degrading” sweatshop conditions. Slave-like laborers work up to 13 hours and are prevented from leaving  without permission. The immigrant workers, one of whom was reported to be just 14, were living in dangerous and unhygienic conditions.

Juan Gomez Centurion, head of the country’s Government Control Agency, raided three Zara slave labor factories producing Zara clothes last week:

“We found men and children who lived in place where they worked. They were not registered and they were living in terrible conditions. They had no official documents and were held against their will, they were not allowed to leave their workplaces without permission.”

The Zara fashion company has been around since 1975 and the founder Inditex  is ranked seventh in Forbes’ billionaires list, with an estimated fortune of £19 billion (or $31 billion). The Spanish company behind Zara, Inditex, said today they were “surprised” by the slave labor revelations and claimed they had not been officially notified by the Argentinian authorities.

This is the second time Zara has been accused of slave and child labor in South American countries like Brazil. Zara  was forced to apologize in front of state deputies at Sao Paulo’s Human Rights Commission, and later paid fines totaling more than £350,000 (or $529,760) as well as compensation to the workers.

Ever wonder what Barbie would look like without makeup? Graphic artist Eddi Aguirre took an image of the doll and stripped it of mascara, eyeshadow and foundation.

And the result wasn’t too pretty. At least by Barbie’s standards.

The natural looking Barbie has acne, bags under her eyes, frizzy hair, and apparently when Barbie takes off her make-up she also gets braces.

Aguirre writes on his website (translated with the help of Google): “Image used for a special makeup for the new magazine, Barbie shows before and after makeup (no one is perfect or perfect).”

Of course, this isn’t the first attempt to humanize Barbie.

According to Opposing Views, if Barbie was a real person her body proportions would be a little, well, out of proportion. She’d stand at about 6 feet tall, have a 39 inch bust, an 18 inch waist and 33 inch hips.

A real-life Barbie may not have real-life measurements but that didn’t stop Valeria Lukyanova from becoming a human doll.

Every year, a duct tape prom dress and matching tux win a $5,000 scholarship in an annual contest, and this year’s contenders are beginning to impress America with their sticky style.

If you think a duct tape prom dress is a cheap alternative to traditional prom wear, however, think again. In addition to countless hours of labor, participants in the “Stuck at Prom” duct tape prom dress scholarship (who score five Gs for their school in addition to the scholarship dough) have to shell out for enough of the sticky stuff to make an entire prom getup.

In fact, Green Sea Floyd High School senior Amber Squires and prom date Kody Britt donned duct tape duds to Thursday’s prom — and Amber, 18, dropped $250 on the duct tape needed to fashion her dress and Britt’s suit.

For the duct tape prom dress and Britt’s matching duct-tux, Squires went through 40 rolls of the tape — 15 for his and 25 for hers. Amber had a vision, and despite being limited to only the colors in which duct tape is manufactured, she says that she still was able to create her ideal prom frock:

“I’m a big cheetah fan … I didn’t really think about all of the colors of duct tape they had.”

Britt was reportedly hesitant initially before he got on board, and Squires says that shopping for the duct tape was a trip:

“I had arms full of duct tape and everyone was looking at me like I was crazy … He had to stand there like a mannequin.”

Amber labored on the duct tape prom dress for 60 hours, and says that the result was “very uncomfortable … like a sauna suit.”

“All of my classmates were really surprised and all the teachers were really proud … I love fashion and I love creating stuff but medical field is where I’m likely going.”

High-end clothing brand Juicy Couture is reportedly replacing full-time workers with part-timers to avoid the provisions of Obamacare.

Juicy Couture would not be the only employer trying to make an end run around the so-called Affordable Care Act. Various employers have already cautioned that they may pass along employee insurance cost hikes  to customers. Other employers, including apparently Juicy Couture, are downgrading workers into part-time status so the employees no longer have eligibility for insurance coverage or purposely keeping headcount below 50 to avoid the law’s provisions — which means jobseekers have to look elsewhere for employment.

The Juicy Couture allegations are detailed in an online petition posted at the Retail Action Project website, in which a New York City employee talks about how he was forced out of a job because his hours were cut:

“When we began working at Juicy Couture, many of us were full-time. Now, only 19 of the store’s 128 employees are full-time! Not only are they firing full-time workers and replacing us with a part-time workforce, just this month Juicy capped all part-time workers hours at 21 hours per week. We quickly realized that Juicy Couture is doing everything they can to not take care of its workers.

“See, it was hard enough for us to make ends meet in New York City as full-time retail workers. But by keeping hours under 30 per week, Juicy Couture will no longer be required to offer their workers affordable health care  — part of the Affordable Health Care Act’s plan to make sure more working Americans have basic health care.”

Perhaps the irony here is that most of the hip/trendy employees of the clothier — at least those who voted — likely cast their ballot for Barack Obama last November.

Separately, the company which claims that its apparel is manufactured in the “glamorous USA” may have some explaining to do, based on this tweet:

A $91,500 men’s T-shirt is currently up for grabs at a New York City retailer.

The black crew-neck shirt is reportedly made out of crocodile. Those interested in purchasing the T-shirt in question can currently pick one up off the rack at Hermés.

Although the high-end retailer doesn’t allow photography inside the store, a writer at The Awl managed to sneak a shot of the price tag. The image clearly shows that the men’s crocodile T-shirt will set shoppers back a whopping $91,500.

In an effort to authenticate the price, the folks at Yahoo! Shine got in touch with a customer service representative at Hermés. While the employee wasn’t able to give out the exact price of the T-shirt in question, the individual confirmed that it cost around $100,000.

PETA has already weighed in on the crocodile T-shirt.

“One of the reasons these products are so cruel is it can take several animals to make one item; it can take three to four crocodiles to make one handbag,” the organization explained. “It’s absurd to equate this with a luxury product.”

The $91,500 T-shirt isn’t the only expensive item made out of crocodile that’s currently on the market. The “King Bey” shoes created by the folks at Perfectly Made Kicks are also made using the animal.

Beyonce recently came under fire from animal rights activists after she ordered a pair of the expensive kicks from the company. Since the shoes are made from crocodile, anaconda skins, stingray, ostrich, and calf hair, the organization lashed out against the singer for her purchase.

“These custom-made kicks come with a high price and it’s paid by the various animals who were beaten and skinned alive or cruelly farmed and killed,” PETA said in a statement.

The organization added, “She can always choose the cruelty-free and green fashion favored by compassionate, chic celebrities such as Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway and designers such as award-winning fashion queen Stella McCartney.”

Yoko Ono is being sued for stealing fashion designs for her men’s clothing line.

Ono is being sued by Haley Nematzadeh, a stylist based in New York City, who claims that Ono stole ideas from her fetish-inspired clothing line.

Nematzadeh says that Yoko Ono’s team saw the designs from her Gonn Walk The Night Line and stole the ideas for Ono’s Fashion for Men line. Among the ideas stolen: See thru clothing and carefully placed hand prints.

Nematzadeh said: “They took everything with no shame. They stole from me blatantly… She’s (Ono is) trying to put fetish in context, but since when does fetish and John Lennon go together? When you think of the Beatles, you think of doves and trees, not that.”

Ono claims that her men’s clothing line was inspired by John Lennon.

On the Opening Ceremony’s website, a message reads: “I was inspired to create Fashion for Men, amazed at how my man was looking so great. I felt it was a pity if we could not make clothes emphasizing his very sexy bod.”

Nematzadeh’s lawyer, Aymen Aboushi, said that it isn’t uncommon for big designers to steal from independent artist. According to Aboushi, most independent artists aren’t equipped to fight major stars in court.

Aboushi said: “They rip off pieces here and there all the time, but you don’t see up-and-coming artist really trying to fight for their rights.”

Robert Pattinson and fashion house Dior can now officially claim the title “Most Persistent Rumored Partnership.”

After a flurry of excitement in October when it was widely reported that the Brit actor had been signed as the new face of a Dior men’s fragrance, the deal was reported to be worth nearly $12 million, with most even carrying a quote from Pattinson that he “likes the brand.”

But with no subsequent announcement by either the Dior or Pattinson’s reps, it was relegated to rumor status and nothing more.

Fast forward to today.

The Sun is reporting that the Cosmopolis actor shot a Dior campaign last year.

Apparently it was “steamy” and for menswear, not a fragrance.

Reportedly, the deal is for three years and worth $12 million, just as it was last time around.

The British newspaper is quite explicit in its description of the shoot, which it says it got from a Dior ‘source.’

It would probably be remiss not to include it here:

“The advert is sexually explicit. It is pushing the boundaries of what you can get away with in advertising. Robert is topless for part of it and kissing one of the [three] models with tongues. He really gets stuck in. There’s another scene where he takes part in a foursome in various states of undress, although it’s not clear whether those scenes will make the final cut. According to the people on set, he didn’t take much persuading to get into the role. He got stuck right in.”

The Telegraph wonders if this rather “raunchy” sounding shoot sounds as if something Dior’s creative director Raf Simons would be keen on. So does The Inquisitr.

All will apparently be revealed in May when the adverts are unveiled, so until then it’s a case of stand down fashionistas.

Eldridge’s most recent video, “Glowing, Youthful Day Make-Up Look For Mature Skin,” is one of the few makeup videos on YouTube aimed at women over 50. While makeup tutorials are a very popular sensation on YouTube, most are aimed at more youthful women and teenagers. Eldridge’s latest video shows older women how they can still brighten up their skin and hide unwanted blemishes, even if they cannot mask the lines that eventually set in with age. The video has scored over 160,000 views in less than two weeks. Eldridge has read thousands of comments on the video, with many women grateful to have a makeup tutorial finally aimed at them.

Her website has grown organically via word of mouth without the use of paid promotion. The site has expanded to contain over 100 videos. Three years of videos are now available online.

Eldridge has over 20 years of experience and has worked in the likes of Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. She has appeared as the resident on-screen beauty expert for the British show, ‘Ten Years Younger,’ for three seasons and has serviced over 100 celebrities ranging from the likes of Katy Perry and Jada Pinkett to Robbie Williams and Princess Charlene of Monaco. She created a product line for the Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido and is now the creative director for the British cosmetics brand No. 7.

“I also don’t really buy into trends,” Eldridge told Today.com. “Get the basics right. If the basics are right, skin looks great and natural and well done.”

Eldridge expressed having a lifelong affair with makeup that started when she was six after discovering her mother’s cosmetic collection. Rather than draw on her face, she painted on paper and experimented with water to see what effects she could create.

Each of Eldridge’s YouTube makeup tutorials land several hundred thousand views and give women a chance to learn from the best from the comfort of their own homes.

The European Union banned the sale of new animal-tested cosmetics yesterday and hopes to set an example that will reverberate throughout the cosmetics industry all across the world. Whether this will happen remains to be seen.

The European Union decided to ban cosmetics with ingredients tested on animals a decade ago but gave cosmetics companies ten years to come up with alternative forms of tests. The ban took effect yesterday, but some companies feel the ban is kicking in before alternative tests are fully viable.

As The Inquisitr previously reported, L’Oreal will respect the ban but is concerned that the new policy could complicate relationships with countries such as China, which requires animal-testing on cosmetics sold to its consumers. Cosmetics Europe claims that it will be difficult to develop new products since alternative tests for risks such as genetic mutation and reproductive toxicity are not ready.

“Europe’s idea is to put more pressure on other parts of the world to end animal testing, but the science doesn’t match that political timetable,” Colin Mackay, a Cosmetics Europe spokesperson, said in The New York Times.

There is a chance that European consumers will not have access to the latest products because those ingredients cannot yet be verified as safe without access to suitable testing. In cases where companies can sell products to Europe, identical products may ship to different markets with different tests verifying their safety.

It is uncertain whether the US will enact a similar ban. The US is traditionally more hesitant to issue economic regulations, for Europe has had stricter food mandates and gun control provisions in place for years without its influence spreading overseas. Animal-tested cosmetics may not disappear unless companies decide for themselves that the practice is no longer necessary.

The European Union does have allies in the US working towards the same cause. The Humane Society of the United States has long campaigned against testing cosmetics on animals, and has coined this week the inaugural Be Cruelty-Free Week to coincide with the European Union’s ban. The organization wants to push the United States to become the next cruelty-free market and cite a recent Lake Research Partners poll suggesting that a majority of Americans oppose testing cosmetics on animals.

“As these poll results demonstrate, U.S. companies still conducting tests on animals need to move away from these practices given the public’s concern for animal suffering and human safety,” Pascaline Clerc, HSUS senior director of animal research issues, said in a press release.

Absent strong economic backlash or heavy political pressure, companies in the US are not likely to voluntary drop animal-tested cosmetics. If they ship a product that is ultimately deemed unsafe, the fallout would be worse than any pressure they currently receive. Nevertheless, a shift may come in the future as the science matures and companies adjust to the European market.

Over 1,000 female students at a Texas high school came to school Friday without a trace of makeup, a gesture intended to encourage classmates to feel more comfortable about their bodies. The teenagers called the initiative Operation Beautiful.

Three friends — Monica Plenger, Madeline Milby, and Binna Kim — founded Operation Beautiful, and the project grew to become a makeup-free day that coincided with International Women’s Day.

“What we really want to do on this day is to prioritize bettering yourself on the inside rather than trying to better yourself on the outside,” Kim said in a YouTube video promoting the event.

The three friends were motivated by similar initiatives in other schools. They were astonished by the degree of support their project received.

“I would rarely see a girl wearing makeup in my classes and in the halls,” Kim told TODAY.com. “The atmosphere of school was so lively; everyone was in such a good mood and taking pictures. It was a really fun day.”

Several of Plano Senior High’s female students reported taking 30 to 45 minutes to get ready in the mornings. Some take as long as two hours.

“If I’m trying to look decent and presentable, it probably takes around an hour and a half,” one female student said.

In stark contrast, guys took between five minutes and half an hour. Female students considered getting ready so quickly to be a luxury.

“What inspired us to start Operation Beautiful was that we all could agree that during the summer we really missed how we could just wake up in the morning and not really care about what we looked like,” Plenger said. “Now when we get ready for school, we feel like we take so much more time than we really need.”

Some women refused to part with their makeup, and a few guys tried to discourage the event. Other male students expressed support for the initiative, and several were interviewed for the promotional video.

“Girls should be able to be confident in who they are with or without makeup,” one student said. “They should be confident in who they are, and they should be able to come to school proud of who they are without wearing makeup.”

Another male student struck a more light-hearted cord.

“Listen, ladies, I just want you to know that you are so gorgeous without your makeup on,” one guy said with a smile. “You can be beautiful without makeup on any day of the week. Look at me, I don’t wear any makeup, and I am so incredibly attractive. You could be like me.”

His tone may be smug, but his self-confidence mirrors the message of the day. Over 1,000 of Plano Senior High School’s 1,300 female students went without makeup to show that they are beautiful just the way they are and confident enough to show it.

Jennifer Lawrence, Hollywood’s newly crowned “It Girl,” says she is honored to be the new face of French fashion house Miss Dior’s handbag line.

Following last week’s print ad reveal of the actress modeling Dior’s chain-strap bags, the 22-year-old can be seen gushing about the brand in a new behind-the-scenes clip from the fashion shoot.

“Dior represents beauty and strength in women, and that’s how I feel when I’m wearing his clothes, it just makes you feel so confident,” Jennifer says. “I’ve always been a huge fan of Dior, and being a part of something with such an incredible history is an honor.”

In the video, Oscar winner is shown wearing pieces from Dior’s spring 2013 ready-to-wear line including a black trouser suit, a white tuxedo dress, a little black dress, Independent.ie notes.

The shoot was masterminded by Dior women’s wear creative director Raf Simons, fashion photographer Willy Vanderperre and stylist Olivier Rizzo.

Lawrence’s love affair with the brand saw her step out in array of Dior dresses throughout awards season, most recently at the recent Oscars to accept her Best Actress statuette for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.

Unless you’re been living under a rock, most people know the actress took a tumble on the steps to the stage, but at least she did it in a strapless, blush Dior Haute couture gown.

The Telegraph reports that Dior’s eye for talent on the rise has meant no less than three Oscar winning actresses have represented the fashion house in its time — Lawrence, Charlize Theron, and Marion Cotillard.

Charlize Theron teamed up with Toms shoes founder Blake Mycoskie to launch a line of shoes for women and kids.

According to E Online, money raised from sales of the brightly colored shoes will go to support the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP). The actress’ charity works to keep African youth safe from HIV/AIDS through education and support of local community organizations working to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

More than 300,000 people die of AIDS each year in South Africa and 5.6 million South Africans are living with HIV or AIDS, the highest number in the world.

When talking about the collaboration with Toms, Charlize told E:

“We have very similar philosophies and I think, you know, I think our passion lies with youth and I think when we got together that we saw great opportunity to enhance each other’s dreams of change in a way that might not have been able to happen if we didn’t partner.”

The design of the shoes features an embroidered Sun-inspired CTAOP logo and has the charity’s motto, ”Reach Out, Think Beyond, and Look Within,” printed on the inside.

In addition to raising money for the charity, Blake Mycoskie hopes the shoes will raise awareness about the need for help.

“When someone sees the shoes and they ask someone about it, they’re not just going to say, ‘It’s a pair of Toms,’ Mycoskie said, They’re going to say, ‘This is Charlize’s organization. This is what they do. This is what they’re committed to. When I bought the shoes, not only did a child get a pair of shoes, but this also help further protect these children from HIV/AIDS.’”

Beards are more than just a fashion statement. A new study out of Queensland, Australia claims that men with facial hair are healthier than their clean shaven counterparts.

One of the current and hip fashion styles, not many people would have guessed beards and mustaches have actual health benefits as well.

The study, published in the Radiation Protection Dosimetry Journal, found that beards protect skin from UV rays that cause premature aging.

Beards are so effective that 90 to 95 percent of UV rays gets blocked depending of the length of the hair. Dr. Nick Lowe, a London based dermatologist, is not surprised:

“A balding, bearded surfer will have more sun damage and pre-cancers on their heads than they will on the top of their faces.”

Another health benefit of facial hair is increased protection against pollens. This is especially helpful for men with asthma. Because asthma triggering pollens are sticky, they simply get stuck in facial hair.

To conduct their study, researchers took mannequins out into the Australian outback. They put fake facial hair on some mannequins and none on the remaining. After a certain period of time, the researchers recorded how much radiation has been absorbed into the clean shaven mannequins compared to the fully bearded ones.

Beards are not a get out of sunscreen free card however. Dr. Lowe still recommends men with facial hair use a thin, non-greasy sun lotion or spray.

There have been a few more interesting health studies published recently. One showed the positive effects television could have on children’s behavior. Another showed that folic acid could decrease the risk of autism.

Rihanna’s first ready to wear collection for British high street retailer River Island debuted at London Fashion Week today.

While some critics applauded the bold brassiness of the clothes, others think that only the pop star’s “Navy” fan base would consider wearing them.

Here’s a snapshot of what the fashion critics are saying:

Tom Sykes of Daily Beast Fashion, in a piece entitled “The Horror! The Horror! Rihanna’s Porny Debut At LFW,” said:

“There were few who anticipated a fashion triumph, but, even allowing for the limited expectations, Rihanna’s collection for River Island as brought forth in London tonight was a horror show.The clothes were hideous and without an ounce of panache or style between them.”

He adds, somewhat gleefully:

“True, there were some consolations. For example, if you really, really like belly buttons, if you are totally nuts for navels, then this could be the collection for you. If you only feel capable of wearing clothes on the lower half of your body if they are slashed up to your waist, then again, you are in luck.”

The Associated Press were kinder, writing:

“No one went to Rihanna’s Saturday night debut as a fashion designer expecting demure dresses set off with tasteful pearls. So no one was surprised by the double-volume hip-hop music, smoke machines and champagne that greeted guests at the unveiling of her Rihanna for River Island collection.”

AP added:

“And few were taken aback by the bad girl, rock chick styling of some of her clothes, with tight-fitting jersey outfits and dresses cut to show more than a bit of leg. It was a fun, flattering collection aimed at young women, containing nothing shocking or outrageous from a singer who has been known to bring those elements to her live performances.”

While over at Pedestrian TV, the snark pen was out with a full load of ink:

“The collection itself was kinda basic, but perhaps that was the point. Like the singer’s seventh album in as many years, the collection was never going to reinvent the wheel, so the major discernible incentives for Rihanna in presenting a collection for a high street retailer are obviously a) commerce, commercial appeal and b) clothes for Rihanna herself to wear on various super yachts while being her usual blunt self.”

On the flipside, heavy hitter Elle Magazine loved it, enthusing:

“We should have known she wouldn’t disappoint. Her London Fashion Week debut was more of a party than a show – the bass heavy soundtrack had Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn (huge models) dancing front row throughout. And there was no catwalk – instead, stacked boxes that the models strode up and through.”

Elle added:

“As for the clothes? Pure Rihanna, from the striped cropped bra top and hot pants to the sporty jumpsuit, the super sexy sheer maxi dress to the denim dungaree bra top and two tone, high waisted jeans.”

Likewise handbag.com called the show “amazing,” and praised the:

“Sleek black silhouettes dominated the line-up, including side-split maxi lengths, that denim jumpsuit and all things crop tops.”

MTV Style also found little to fault in the collection, raving:

“We’re totally on-board with her comfy girly-yet-grunge pieces. She kicked off her show with Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “Clique” blasting to a light show on a multi-level platform stage, and then sent out a two-piece denim ensemble for her opening look. She remixed traditional denim overalls but cutting them into two pieces and adding an extra layer of baggy jeans (literally) on top of a lighter pair, which we’ve never seen before.”

Yahoo Lifestyle said the collection packed “a real statement” noting:

“The star’s influence was clear from the start, as black hooded jumpsuits, box-shouldered crop tops and a thigh-high split maxi skirt hit the stage, oozing her urban style … Monochrome came in the form of a striped short suit and trousers in a smudge-print – also seen on a sheer, flowing maxi dress that we’re predicting will be the hit of the collection.”

Company magazine also heaped laurels:

“Satin dresses, jersey skirts and dresses with thigh-high splits, denim, crop tops, varsity jackets and fine knits were among the collection, which was actually amazing – those of you who worried that a singer couldn’t design a clothing range have nothing to worry about!”

The Independent  highlighted:

 ”Zesty silk dresses tied at the waist, grey marl jersey, crop tops, and denim-on-denim made up a wardrobe that was urban and casual in its look, and which mixed high and low references in an homage to its creator’s own style.”

Adding:

“If you want to dress like Rihanna, this is what to buy – but be warned, steel abs don’t come as standard.”

Reuters noted the “boyish, casual designs” and quoted Los Angeles model Tolula Adeyemi, as saying:

“I loved it, it’s so Rihanna, it’s got Rihanna’s name all over it. I kind of want the whole collection, it’s got plenty of swag.”

Sober judges at the best of times, The Guardian, compared Rihanna’s bid for fashion fiefdom to Mary and Kate Olsen’s debut years ago — the sisters were named as Womenswear Designers of the Year by Council of Fashion Designers of America last year — concluding:

“For keen fashion enthusiasts who look to London for innovative ideas this 120-piece collection undoubtedly fell short. There is little doubt the collaboration, which is supported by a marketing campaign featuring Dunn, will be a winner when it hits the shops next month.”

Which, to be frank, is the point of selling clothes in a high street store.

But if there is an overall verdict on Rihanna’s collection, it’s that there isn’t an overall verdict.

Some thought the singer “hit the nail right on the head,” others found the whole thing a “tiresome, underwhelming, and uninspired marketing exercise.”

In short, the show was very much like the singer herself. Unapologetic.

For her part, Rihanna — wearing an Alaïa little black dress — took her bow at the end of the packed show, along with co-designer Adam Selman. The Bajan star reportedly beamed at the reception she received.

Baltimore, MD – Ancient Greek hairdos were said to be wigs, according to modern scholars. But a Baltimore hairdresser named Janet Stephens has rediscovered how our ancestors managed to pull off those amazing fashions like those worn by Cleopatra, Faustina the Younger, and Empress Plotina.

According to The News Tribune, Janet Stephens, 54, works as a hair designer at Baltimore’s Studio 921 Salon & Day Spa. Stephens told the Wall Street Journal she was killing time in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore back in 2001 when she caught sight of a stone bust of the Roman empress Julia Domna, which features a braided bun hairstyle:

“I thought, holy cow, that is so cool. It was amazing, like a loaf of bread sitting on her head.”

Scholars of ancient history widely believe the elaborately teased, towering, and braided hair styles of the day were wigs. Stephens did not buy this explanation and “found that she could achieve the hairstyle by sewing the braids and bits together, using a needle.”

An ancient term “acus” was translated to mean “hairpin,” but Stephens thought the term referred to a needle and thread. Using her methods, Stephens found that while hairpins couldn’t reproduce the ancient hairdos she could accurately reproduce the hairstyles with needle and thread.

In 2007, Stephens sent her findings to the Journal of Roman Archaeology:

“It’s amazing how much chutzpah you have when you have no idea what you’re doing. I don’t write scholarly material. I’m a hairdresser.”

John Humphrey, the journal’s editor, was intrigued by the hypothesis and allowed it to be printed under the headline Ancient Roman Hairdressing: On (Hair)Pins and Needles:

“I could tell even from the first version that it was a very serious piece of experimental archaeology which no scholar who was not a hairdresser—in other words, no scholar—would have been able to write.”

While some scholars disagree with Stephens on some of her findings, in general her ideas seems to be well-received. On the other hand, she hasn’t received any ancient hairdo requests from clients other than an Augustus Caesar cut.

According to Cleveland.com, the sleeveless dress is made from organza tweet and is fittd with a black bodice, leather trim, and a red A-line sparkly skirt (the photos really do not do it justice).

According to the Global Grind, Michelle Obama first chose Jason Wu, who is only 29 years old, for her debut as First Lady in 2009. The second time was when President Obama was sworn into office this past month. There’s no doubt that designs from Jason Wu are now probably getting popular.

While some think the Michelle Obama dress is stunning, others think it’s more befitting a cocktail party rather than the State of the Union. Comedian Abbi Crutchfield said on Twitter that “”Michelle Obama [is] dressed for where she’d rather be tonight #SOTU.”

Some people seem to think that the cost of the Michelle Obama dress is exorbitant. Reports say that the Jason Wu designer dress cost about $3500 USD, which is the equivalent of three month’s salary for someone making minimum wage. The Obama’s have become known for their high frivolous spending, with the inauguration party costs setting a record at over $170 million.

New York Fashion Week is reportedly “imploding” after the impact of Winter Storm Nemo, a huge blizzard storm system that dumped more than three feet of snow across the Northeast.

New York Fashion Week is now imploding due to the havoc visited upon the New York metro area and New England after Nemo hit, dumping up to three feet of snow and slush across the region and several states. NYFW was set to happen beginning late last week, but the impending arrival of the superstorm put a crimp in the style of the major fashion world event.

Business Insider first reported upon New York Fashion Week imploding, explaining how even before snow began to fall, several events had been postponed or rescheduled to cope with the pending snowpocalypse.

The site explains:

“There are serious logistical problems … Marc Jacobs postponed his show until Thursday, saying that bad weather could postpone some deliveries and keep staff from being able to travel … Meanwhile, designer Jenni Kayne is stuck in Los Angeles because her flight was cancelled, so she probably won’t make her runway show, reported Charlotte Cowles at The Cut.”

Cowles described Fashion Week imploding from the frontlines, bravely embedded among the couture-clad masses coping with heavy snowfall and sleet and slip as Nemo bore down on the area. She describes the frontlines:

“What started out as strong winds and rain has turned into sleet, and the sidewalks are getting slick. We saw two women outside the Kate Spade presentation in high platform heels, clutching each other for dear life while a street style photographer mercilessly took their picture. Inside, piles of wet clothes and slimy umbrellas were heaped in a corner like dirty laundry.”

She adds that trade mag WWD released a statement about Fashion Week imploding, and the organizing entity declined to cancel events despite the impediment to travel posed by 2013′s first big snow storm, Nemo:

“In consultation with the city and CFDA, as well as our other partners, we have decided not to close Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week early this evening. All planned shows will go on as scheduled. We are also working on adding additional shows to tonight’s schedule to accommodate designers who were scheduled to show on Saturday morning. We expect that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will re-open at 9 a.m. Saturday, and that all shows will go on as scheduled tomorrow afternoon. We are working to accommodate all of our designers, and will update the schedule as soon as possible.”

As news that Fashion Week was imploding in response to Nemo rocked Twitter, one user lamented, “can’t Anna Wintour stop this?”

Victoria Beckham has been working like crazy at NWFW and it looks like the stress may be starting to get to her. The super model recently posted a photo from New York Fashion Week wearing a jeans, some tall boots, and a bag over her head.

Beckham wrote on Twitter: “It’s that time in the season when we all get a little delirious #NYFW x Vb.”

Beckham has been tweeting up a storm from #NYFW. The super model will be showcasing clothes for various designers during the annual fashion show and she will also show off her own line, Victoria by Victoria Beckham.

Beckham has a few days before she shows off her line at NYFW but she’s definitely been keeping busy. She’s been trying out “posh pencils,” slipping on the “nicest socks ever,” and complaining that model fittings and handbags are being held on the same day.

The supermodel is also outsourcing some of her fashion opinions. Beckham recently asked her fans about what flooring she should pick for NYFW.

Tampa, FL – Tampa will be hosting the Christian Fashion Show in 2013. The organizers of this fashion event say that “modest does not equal frumpy.”

This Friday the Christian Fashion Show begins Friday with a VIP reception and then a runway show on Saturday. The nine designers selected for the runway event, not all of whom are Christian, will showcase original women’s couture, women’s ready-to-wear fashion, men’s clothing, swimwear, and bridal gowns.

The organizers of the event are Jose Gomez, his wife, and another couple. According to ABC News, Gomez says that fashion designs are looking at the Christian Fashion Show as a sort of challenge:

“A lot of the designers we talked with looked at the challenge as a creative challenge. How do we push the boundaries – with boundaries? We want to do something to make New York jealous.”

The Christian Fashion Show will differentiate itself from other fashion events in other ways besides the clothing. Bibles and other Christian-themed items will be placed into the gift bags. Male and female models will be provided separate dressing areas to “preserve their dignity.” The audience will be limited to females only when women models show off the swim wear designs.

The youngest designer of the Christian Fashion Show, Julia Chew, says she was drawn to the show in part because of her faith but also because she desires to create modest clothing that represent her values:

“I’m a teenager, and I want to be accepted. As a Christian, I want to dress and design clothes in a way that honors my body.”

Crew sells her creations on Etsy, a website where designers, crafters, and creators can sell their homemade items. Jose Gomez is already receiving phone calls requesting that next year’s Christian Fashion Show be hosted in a bigger location like Miami or New York. He tells The Miami Herald that continuing this fashion event is necessary:

“Modesty is the right thing to do. The fashion industry operates under certain assumptions, but there is an alternative.”

The Christian Fashion Week website also takes a stand against the industry peer pressure to conform by doing nude modeling:

“The bottom line is that there are many models, actors, and entertainment professionals that lead successful careers without ever getting naked. If more of the talent would dare to make a stand, the industry would be forced to stop asking. Besides, what sense does it make to use naked bodies to sell clothing!”

“Man rings” are made of titanium and come with attached mini-tools. The sleek-looking rings might just be a perfect Valentine’s Day gift for male significant others. The rings are basically a wearable Swiss Army knife.

The $385 man rings are being sold by the BooneRings Etsy shop. The website is a popular online venue for artisans and vintage treasure hunters. The titanium rings boast a bottle opener, a serrated blade, a straight blade, a saw, and even a tiny comb. The BooneRings shop has a reminder posted to potential customers that the ring is not a toy, The Blaze notes.

A description of the man ring reads:

“It is a finely engineered and crater piece of functional art that anyone would be proud to wear.”

BooneRings customizes the tool-infused ring to offer an attractive fit for customers. Although the man rings are becoming an internet sensation, they can be cut to fit a female finger as well. The ring makers are based out of Georgia, according to the company’s website. The team consists of Bruce Boone, artisans Chris Shepherd and Steven Post, and Boone’s wife Trish.

Like many of the online cottage industries utilizing the ETSY platform, Boone started the company on a shoe-string budget. Many successful ETSY sellers morph a hobby into an extra cash endeavor. Some ultimately turn their internet shop into a creative full-time career. Boone began just a single machine in his basement in 1993. Bruce Boone recently began using his bike parts making skills to the Swiss Army knife style rings.

An excerpt from the BooneRings website reads:

“I tinkered and ran an ad for titanium cogs in a single bike magazine and was overwhelmed at the response. I had to quit my real job and make bike parts for a living. I had to hire employees and buy another machine. My wife Trish and I decided at the last minute to exhibit at the Interbike show and were amazed at the dealer response; we didn’t get to sit down, go to the bathroom, or stop talking the whole time we were there! ‘Man Rings’ Have Arrived: They Cut, Saw, And Even Open Beer Bottles is a post from: The Inquisitr

A Russian couple have shown their eternal devotion to one another through tattooing. After they met in person for the first time, young Lesya let her boyfriend tattoo his name is huge letters across her face. I guess that’s one way to profess your undying love.

Tattoo artist Rouslan Toumaniantz tattooed his first name in huge Gothic script over 18-year-old Lesya‘s face on the day they met. The couple first started talking online, and met in person after calling “head over heels in love” in a chat room. Then met in Moscow, Russia, where they decided to get married.

But apparently the lifelong commitment of saying “I do” wasn’t enough, so the couple opted for a more permanent bond.

“It’s a symbol of our eternal devotion. I’d like him to tattoo every inch of my body,” she said. A friend of Rouslan also defends the couple’s choice, noting that “sometimes the best decisions are the ones you make in an instant with your heart rather than the ones long-debated in your mind.” He acknowledges that some people are “terrified that Lesya has made a rash decision that she’ll regret horribly.”

The former art student also had her boyfriend add the words “All for Love” over her eyebrow. Much of her face is now covered in tattoo ink. Lesya has not only joined Rouslan in a relationship, but is interning under him as well, learning the trade of tattoo art.

‘Their plans for a life together include her learning to tattoo while she also gets the full-body ink that she’s always dreamed of and of course a family,” said a friend of Toumaniantz.

Rousland’s artwork made headlines in 2009 after he tattooed 56 stars across the face of an 18 year old. She later lied and accused him of inking her while she slept. Eighteen-year-old Kimberley Vlaeminckin said that the tattoo artist — who was working in Belgium at the time — was supposed to only give her three stars, but added the rest after she fell asleep. Later she blamed the language barrier for the “misunderstanding.”

She later recanted her testimony, saying that she was simply afraid to show her face to her father. Rouslan initially offered to pay for laser removal, since he didn’t want a customer to be unhappy. However, even laser removal would leave permanent white scars on the girl’s face where the tattoos had been.

On the plus side, at least Lesya got the name of the one she loves tattooed on her lovely face, instead of following in rapper Lil’ Wayne’s footsteps. Lil’ Wayne recently got a new tattoo on his face, and now the word “BAKED” let’s everyone know how he feels about a certain drug. Either that or his favorite type of potato chips.

And at least some of Lesya’s skin still shows through, unlike the Czech presidential candidate Vladimir Franz, who is completely covered in tattoos.

If you’re a fan of Rihanna’s taste in fashion (when she’s wearing clothes that is), then you’re in for a treat.

Together with co-designer Adam Selman — and costume designer for the 24-year-old — the duo have put together a fashion line for high street chain River Island.

The Unapologetic one will debut her first-ever collection with River Island at London Fashion Week on February 16, E! reports.

Previewing her collection via Vogue UK, Rihanna explained the reasons behind her long-held fashionista aspirations.

“I have wanted to design my own fashion label for a very long time,” said the Bajan star.

She adds:

 “This has been something I wanted to do ever since I started loving fashion. Every time I saw something on a rack there was something I wanted to do to change it and so I thought that the only way I could do that is by designing the perfect thing for me.”

Elaborating on the inspiration for the range, the “Diamonds” singer revealed:

“My style is definitely inspired by my mood, so this collection will definitely have a range of different moods, different attitudes,” then adds that her clothes are aimed at “sassy personalities” and “all body types.”

“I wanted all types of girls to really want to wear this and feel comfortable in it but still feel edgy,” Rihanna continues. “I wanted character to come out in the clothes without trying too hard.”

Defiantly, the songstress observes:

“The kids say what’s cool and the designers go and design it. Why not go to the source when you want to be ahead of the trend? I wanted to create something that’s inspirational, new and fresh – that’s why I wanted to work with River Island.”

When Vanessa Hudgens arrived at New York’s Hudson Hotel for the “L’Amour Nanette Lepore,” launch party on January 24, she was wearing head to toe ”L’Amour Nanette Lepore.”  Decked out in a bright, coral colored dress, black pants and a biker jacket, she could have easily been mistaken for wearing pieces from the designer’s high priced Nanette Lepore line.  But each piece was well under $50, and Vanessa’s dress only a reasonable $17.

Nanette Lepore, the high end American fashion designer, whose designs usually retail for somewhere between $200-$900, will be launching her affordable “L’amour Nanette Lepore” juniors line exclusively at JCPenny this February, although the line is  available for pre-order on the J.C. Penny website.

The line, which was inspired by Lepore’s 14-year old daughter, Violet,  will consist of “fun and flirty dresses as well as casual sportswear and will target the 13- to 19-year old shopper,” according to a press release by JCPenny.  Instead of Lepore’s usual high fashion prices, all looks will be affordably be priced at under $50.

Lepore has been saying that she has been wanting to produce a junior fashion line for quite some time, and has said that from day one, her teen daughter Violet was very involved.

“I really want to please her…When I come home with things and she doesn’t like them, it’s like a dagger to my heart,” said Lepore.

While the line is mostly aimed at the tween and early teen crowd, ”L’Amour Nanette Lepore” has been said to be “totally wearable” for the over-20 crowd.  The line features electric colored neon-prints, lots of loose and flowing dresses and shirts, skin tight neon colored pants and tights, and a zipper covered biker jacket, which seems to have been added to the line for good measure.

In an age where designers and their fashion houses often take the first opportunity to cash in on outfits worn by celebrities, J Crew is working to protect the first family’s fashion choices.

J Crew’s creative director, Jenna Lyons, reported that the company will no re-run clothing items that Michelle Obama or her daughters wore for the inauguration. Lyon’s attitude not only shows respect for the privacy of the first family, but helps the company retain a sense of exclusivity that high-end store often lose when they choose to mass-market pieces based on what celebrities have worn.

“I feel a sense of responsibility to make people feel good and to make people look good,” Lyons remarked. “For me, the reason I like to make clothes is I want everyone, not just the people who have a really big pocket book, but everyone to feel beautiful.”

After Michelle Obama stepped out in Jason Wu for a second time at last night’s inaugural ball, the designer’s website crashed from millions of curious new viewers and customers. The Michael Kors dress that the First Lady wore on Election Day was completely sold out in less than 48 hours, with knockoffs appearing in other clothing stores. But for those searching for the day looks worn by Michelle and her daughters, they’re out of luck.

The 48-year-old told Today, “Obviously people want to have a part of what she’s wearing, but most often she’s purchased it from previous seasons, or has pulled it out of her closet, so it’s not available. We won’t [rerun these items], just out of respect for the First family.”

“The lady day coat that Malia was wearing has been in our line for years, and we’ll continue that, but we’ll retire the color. We won’t do the color again, just out of respect for the first family,” she added.

J Crew also designed Michelle’s purple gloves, and the embellished sash she wore as a belt.

‘That belt was actually a sash. She fashioned it into a belt around the coat. We won’t rerun that. She did her own thing to that, and out of respect, we’ll let her have her that moment.”

Although the Obama’s J Crew picks were on store racks yesterday, they are now almost entirely sold out.

Malia’s $325 wool-blend coat in “fresh plum” is only now available in a size zero. Michelle’s $265 rhinestone sash, part of J Crew’s bridal collection, is also completely out of stock. 

J Crew does not produce more of an item simply because a member of the first family decides to wear it.

“As far as we know, they literally ordered online and they shop like anyone else in America,” Lyons reports. “We found out that morning, just like the rest of the world.”

Michelle Obama dressed for the occasion over the inauguration weekend, sporting a pair of frocks designed in the good ol’ United States itself.

Michelle Obama dress number one was a royal blue dress and cardigan by American designer Reed Krakoff. Worn at Sunday’s swearing-in ceremony, the first lady’s outfit perfectly matched President Obama’s blue suit. It also subtly blended in with the Blue Room of the White House, where the private ceremony took place.

Older daughter Malia followed her parents’ lead with a blue dress of her own, while younger daughter Sasha stood out from the crowd in a lilac dress with a gold, high-waisted belt and matching gold shoes.

Michelle Obama dress number two was a stunning black sequin Michael Kors boat neck dress as worn to the Presidential Inaugural Reception. You can see more of each dress in our pictures below.

Both Krakoff and Kors are amongst the first lady’s favorite designers. She wore a grape metallic Kors dress on election night in November 2012 (an outfit she liked so much she wore it at least three times) and has been spotted out and about with Reed Krakoff accessories.

Obama’s new hairdo also got an outing at the weekend, with her husband jokily remarking:

“I love Michelle Obama. And to address the most significant event of this weekend: I love her bangs.”

Obama remains a hugely influential figure in fashion. Her keenness for widely available, off-the-rack bargains is well documented, even if her taste for pricey accessories is less accessible for most shoppers.

For many Americans, Kors and Krakoff’s threads will probably be a paycheck too far. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an enterprising retail chain produce an imitation dress or two.

John Galliano once stunned the fashion world with designs of astonishing art and imagination. Then, came the fall. Two horrendous anti-semitic rants in Paris, his resulting sacking from creative director of Christian Dior in March 2011, admissions of valium and alcohol abuse, and a trial. Last year, France stripped him of the Legion D’Honneur it awarded him in 2009.

But now Galliano is returning.

On Friday, it was announced that the 52-year-old enfant terrible has been offered a temporary residence at Oscar de la Renta’s New York studio for three weeks, as de la Renta prepares for New York Fashion Week.

“John and I have known each other for many years and I am a great admirer of his talent,” de la Renta said. “He has worked long and hard on his recovery and I am happy to give him the opportunity to reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative.”

According to The Guardian, Anna Wintour, editor in chief of US Vogue, brokered the arrangement. During his exile Galliano has had some support from the industry he once ascended. The aforementioned Wintour and also Kate Moss — the Brit model asked Galliano to design her wedding dress in July 2011.

Of his much-publicized drunken Paris outburst that cost him his livelihood and reputation , Galliano told Women’s Wear Daily:

“I am an alcoholic. I have been in recovery for the past two years. Several years prior to my sobriety, I descended into the madness of the disease. I said and did things which hurt others, especially members of the Jewish community. I have expressed my sorrow privately and publicly for the pain which I caused, and I continue to do so. I remain committed to making amends to those I have hurt.”

Galliano’s gratitude is palpable in the brief statement he made to Vogue:

“I am grateful to Oscar beyond words for inviting me to spend time with him in the familiar surroundings of a design studio. His support and faith in me is humbling.”

For his part, de la Renta has dismissed any idea that the move is part of plan to name Galliano as his successor if he ever decides to retire, instead declaring:

“While I’m working on a collection, I sit with all of my assistants around me. I’m not a loner. I listen to everyone. I wish the Virgin Mary would come and sit next to me. I love to be surrounded by people.”

The Anti-Defamation League — a Jewish run organization that protests anti-Semitism — has spoken out in support of Galliano’s return to fashion. ADL’s national director, Abraham H. Foxman told Vogue:

“We believe that individuals can change their hearts and minds as long as they demonstrate true contrition. Mr Galliano has worked arduously in changing his world view and dedicated a significant amount of time to researching, reading and learning about the evils of anti-Semitism and bigotry. Along his journey to recovery he met with us on numerous occasions. He has accepted full responsibility for his previous remarks and understands that hurtful comments have no place in our society.”

Bringing up the rear, UK Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman enthused: ”Oscar de la Renta is the king of uptown style and John Galliano the prince of romantic glamour, so it should be a magical match. I am delighted John’s returning to fashion.”

It seems the mat on the fashion’ s front door says welcome, after all.

New Wrangler jeans come with moisturizer built in. The Wrangler Spa Denim jeans are infused with lotion and designed to cut down on dry skin irritation. The new spa jeans appear to only be available for women. Ladies can choose Wrangler jeans infused with either Olive extracts, aloe vera, or “Smooth Legs” moisturizers.

Wrangler jeans got their name in 1947 when they were designed for hard-working North Carolina cowboys, the New York Daily News notes.

Mick Jagger’s daughter Lizzie is the spokesmodel for the new Wrangler Spa Denim jeans, Fox News notes. During a premiere ad for the new Wrangler moisturizer jeans, Lizzie had this to say:

“They definitely feel cooler than regular jeans. After a day wearing them, my legs feel great. They come out feeling more silky than usual.”

The Wrangler Spa Denim jeans are reportedly selling for about $135 to $150. Although the price is higher than the standard Wrangler jeans, the savings women could enjoy from not having to buy as much lotion could make up the difference in the long run. Even if the lotion savings don’t add up to the cost of several pairs of the new moisturizer denim jeans, the comfort factor could make the purchase a worthy endeavor.

Wranglers might be the first jeans company to infuse moisturizers into, but a similar tact has already been taken with socks. An excerpt from the ASOS Wrangler Spa Denim jeans description reads:

Michelle Obama may be the First Lady but she isn’t above shopping at Target. Obama was recently spotted out in a dress from the department store while talking about her Let’s Move campaign in Florida.

According to the Huffington Post, Michelle was wearing a dress designed by Jason Wu for Target. The Sleeveless Chiffon Dress in Naval Floral with Gold Belt retails for $39.99. The First Lady did alter the dress a little.

The Target dress comes with a gold belt but Michelle opted for a red one.

The Hollywood Life reports that Obama is a big fan of designer Jason Wu. She wore one of his dresses to President Obama’s inauguration ball and apparently she’s also a fan of his more affordable line.

But Michelle shopping at Target shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. She’s been spotted frequently during her time at the White House in clothes from stores like Target and the Gap.

Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a little bit if you want to duplicate Michelle’s Flotus style. The Sleeveless Chiffon Dress in Naval Floral with Gold Belt is no longer available at Target.

Fashion executive Vittorio Missoni, his wife and four others, were declared missing this week after the plane they were flying on took off Friday afternoon and disappeared. Venezuelan air and sea rescue services were dispatched a short time after the plane vanished.

The fashion moguls jet took off from the resort of Los Roques, an archipelago off the coast.

Italian consul in Venezuela, Giovanni Davoli, told Reuters:

“It disappeared yesterday. They have been looking for it with helicopters and ships, but have not found anything yet. They are still searching for it this morning.”

Missoni is the oldest son of the founders of the fashion house which is renowned for its use of zigzag, bold stripes and colored knits. Missoni co-owns the company with siblings Luca and Angela. The siblings took over Missoni from parents Ottavio and Rosita in 1996 and since that they they have launched new Missoni retail stores and started the Missoni Home Collection. The company in 2011 was asked to create a new line of low-priced items for mega-retailer Target.

Missoni spokeswoman Maddalena Aspes tells Yahoo News:

“The Missoni family has been informed by the Venezuelan consulate that Vittorio Missoni and his wife are missing, but we don’t know any more.”

On the Vogue Italia website a large banner now reads:

“Bring Vittorio Missoni home”.

The disappearance of Vittorio Missoni arrives during the company’s 60th year celebrations.

Edward Scissorfeet is what people call the infamous backwards high heels created by Leanie van der Vyver and Dutch shoe designer René van den Berg. Called “Scary Beautiful,” this crazy fashion style is intended to serve as a commentary on today’s impossible standards of beauty. But others simply call them the scariest shoes of all time.

High heeled shoes have a long history, with Egyptian pictographs depicting people adding a little height with their shoes. High heels did not become popular in modern times until around 1660, when a shoemaker named Nicholas Lestage designed high heeled shoes for Louis XIV. Yes, that’s right. A man designed high heels for another man. This was no queer eye for the straight guy, but eventually this new fashion style became popular with the ladies.

High heels have probably reached their penultimate when it comes to crazy designs, and I say this only because it’s actually — barely — possible to walk in these shoes. High heels have come to represent an almost awkward pinnacle of beauty standards that defy common sense. Over in eastern Europe, many jobs requires all women employees to wear high heels at all times…even when it comes to walking to work on icy roads. According to The Sun, over in Russia high-heeled ladies are “Russian” to the finish line in a high heeled race hosted by Glamour magazine. Yay, a pun…

Van der Vyver graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her work, including “Scary Beautiful,” can be found her website, cargocollective.com. She explained her motivation for creating these Edward Scissorfeet backwards high heels to Yahoo! Shine:

“After working in fashion for seven years, and therefore being well aware of the manipulation images in fashion suffer for a perfect result, I still compare myself to them and other current beauty ideals. My frustration with my own inability to overcome these feelings of inadequacy was what brought ‘Scary Beautiful’ into fruition. The shoes formed part of my graduation project that was a result of my thesis. The conclusion of my thesis investigation was that people are not satisfied with what they look like, and that perfection, according to the beauty and fashion standards, has reached a climax. Humans are playing God by physically and metaphorically perfecting themselves. Beauty is currently at an all time climax, allowing this project to explore what lies beyond perfection. Scary Beautiful challenges current beauty ideals by inflicting an unexpected new beauty standard.”

The video presentation she created actually won a design prize at Gerrit Rietveld Academie as a form of art rather than as a serious fashion statement. I laughed out loud when watching this video. Just think of the reaction if super models waddled down the runway sporting a pair. Although, I can actually imagine Lady Gaga shuffling along in a zombie-like stupor in these crazy high heels.

Erin Heatherton was recently featured in the Victoria’s Secret Swim 2013 Catalog.

According to JustJared.com, Heatherton graced the pages of this years swimsuit catalog along with a number of other gorgeous supermodels. Some of the other models inluded: Candice Swanepoel, Behati Prinsloo, Lais Ribeiro, and Sara Sampaio.

As we can all tell from her Swim 2013 photo’s (shown below), Heatherton knows how to look her best.

According to the Examiner, Heatherton says that her secret to looking her sexiest is having a healthy diet. She said that it’s necessary to eat plenty of healthy foods.

Heatherton also said that most models don’t eat enough. Most girls in the fashion idustry make the big mistake of not eating enough healthy foods. In fact, most models believe that they only have to work out to be fit.

When she saw how other models were treating themselves, Heatherton realized she needed to eat healthy and work out in order to show the results that she wanted.

Heatherton said that she gets up at 6 am every day to work out. In fact, she works out twice a day … not just once.

Her workouts include a combination of running and yoga. She also does butt lifts in the evenings, since she likes having those sexy curves.

From what we can see of her photos, Heatherton’s workouts are working just fine.

Bikinis, which seem to have dominating the swimwear genre since their introduction decades ago, are having the opposite of a moment — and as celebrities opt for one-piece suits, the maillot is surging in the poolwear sphere.

Bikinis have always far outnumbered the options for one-piece wearers, and the reign of the two-piece swimsuit has been as pervasive as it is oppressive. Popular swimwear manufacturers like Victoria’s Secret and Venus seem to offer a smattering of maillot styles amid pages of mix and matchable two-piece sets, but it seems that for now, that trend is on the downswing.

Cindy Hahn, owner of NYC boutique Azaleas, told the New York Post that bikinis are less common this season and that new one-piece styles have really energized the maillot trend:

“We’ve ordered about 20 percent more in one-pieces versus last year. The one-piece has been updated so that it’s neither a boring mommy suit nor a scandalous monokini.”

Designer Malia Mills concurred, simply telling the paper:

“Hell, yeah — maillots are definitely where it’s at.”

But, Mills said, rejecting the bikini is also slightly transgressive in the world of fashion, adding:

“We know the world is a stage now more than ever before, with the individual stepping into the spotlight, unafraid to make a statement and define it as her very own … The one-piece is an outfit in and of itself — a statement piece that says I dare to be different.”

Designer Lenny Leleu noted:

“It’s far more exciting to design a maillot than a bikini … I love the challenge in covering up more.”

Colleen Sherin of Saks tells Yahoo that the days of the matronly one-piece are over, and observes:

“It doesn’t have to be super sporty and active and covered up. Some one-pieces offer a more plunging neckline or halter neckline that can still be sexy.”

Saks alone confirmed that nearly half of the new swimwear styles are maillots, where bikinis normally account for most styles.

Victoria’s Secret revealed its 2013 Swim Catalogue today, and Candice Swanepoel is on the cover.

The beautiful model, who also graced the cover of the 2011 Swim Catalogue, said that she was honored to be chosen again by Victoria’s Secret to be on the cover.

Swanepoel told PEOPLE Magazine:

“It was such an honor to be picked for the cover … It is such an iconic catalogue. Before I was a model, I used to see Gisele Bündchen, Tyra Banks and all of those iconic women on it. It is amazing that a little South African girl can get on the cover.”

According to Celebrity Gossip, Victoria’s Secret flew a few of its models down to the beaches of Miami and Turks and Caicos for the swimsuit photoshoot.

Swanepoel said:

“Victoria’s Secret is like a big family. The swim shoots are always really fun, and I love being on the beach. I can’t really complain [about my job] — I feel very lucky!”

Here’s a look at the cover of the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Swim Catalogue. And yes, Candice thinks the same thing. The model said: “I love it — it’s so sexy and gives me amazing cleavage.”

Prince William has been ranked below Prince Charles in the 2013 edition of GQ magazine’s annual “best dressed” list.

The 30-year-old prince was placed 37th in GQ‘s list, while his debonair father was ranked 8th. Ouch.

Sixty-four-year-old Charles will become a grandfather this year, but his lofty position on such lists demonstrates that a sense of style sticks around as the years tick by. That, or the Royal Family can afford a yacht-load of stylists and the finest tailoring.

Natalie Massenet of Net-a-Porter and head of the British Fashion Council was quick to praise Charles, described to GQ how the prince remains “on trend”:

“This is a man who knows what he likes, knows how to wear it, and sticks with it whatever the prevailing fashions.”

Prince William still caught some praise, with the magazine describing how the prince represents “true British style.” Wills’ favorite designers are said to include Richard James and Spencer Hart.

Top of the GQ “best dressed” list was Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens. The actor beat out stiff competition from the likes of Robert Pattinson, Homeland‘s Damian Lewis, Idris Alba, and rapper Tinie Tempah for top spot. The British magazine asserts that Stevens is “always a class act.” Mick Jagger (40th), Sir Elton John (21st), Bill Nighy (27th), and David Beckham (36th) also make appearances.

The full list appears in the February issue of GQ. The magazine will hit news stands in the UK from Thursday and is set to launch in the US next week.

Israel banned skinny models in order to promote more healthy living in Israel’s youth. New legislation passed by the Knesset requires fashion companies in Israel to use models with healthy body types.

Israel’s skinny model law, which went into effect Tuesday, bans skinny models with a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of less than 18.5 from appearing in Israeli advertisements. According to that BMI standard, females model with a height of 5 feet, 8 inches must weigh at least 119 pounds or more. Advertising agencies are also not allowed to photoshop, or alter, digital photographs to make models appear thinner than reality. Sounds like models with more curves may discover that finding a job suddenly becomes easier.

According to NoInvite.com, Israel banned skinny models by enforcing the rules on companies in order to protect the youth from unhealthy life choices:

“Companies will have to present a medical file of their employee, certifying she maintained a healthy body weight for three months prior to a given photo session or show. The legislation also restricts the digital tampering of photos to visually reduce the weight of the model, with companies required to explicitly label the pictures as modified. Some 90 percent of Israel’s population suffering from eating disorders is estimated to comprise young girls aged 12-20.”

Israel is not the first nation to promote health by banning underweight models from the runway and advertisement. According to The Wall Street Journal, in Europe, a number of models have died of anorexia in recent years, causing their governments to react:

“[P]ublic outcry led authorities in a number of countries—including Spain and Italy—to attempt to regulate models’ weight. The Madrid Fashion Show bans women whose BMI is below 18. Milan’s Fashion Week bans models with a BMI below 18.5.”

The US fashion’s industry main representative, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), has chosen to emphasize guidelines for healthy conditions instead of an outright ban. According to The Wall Street Journal, “CFDA has a six-year-old program aimed at providing healthy environments for models based on recommendations from nutritionists, eating disorder specialists and fitness trainers.” They have declined to criticize Israel’s ban on skinny models:

“We never had an approach of mandate or enforce. We create awareness and education. [The US fashion industry] has made great strides, particularly around age. We’ve seen a sharp decrease in underage models working during fashion week. We believe in consistent messaging from the CFDA, not pointing your finger at someone but a collective effort by the industry to ensure healthy working conditions.”

Ivanka Trump is being sued by Mystique Footwear. The company claims that Trump stole two sandal designs from its footwear collection. Mystique claims that it registered with the US Copyright Office its ornamental designs affixed to sandals titled “By the Sea – Style 3323” and “Starry Eyed – Style 4179.”

According to Mystique Footwear, its intellectual property was eventually turned into Trump’s “Pia” and “Pandra” sandals. Mystique argues:

“Defendants’ acts are willful, deliberate and committed with prior notice and knowledge of Plaintiff’s copyrights. At a minimum, Defendants were willfully blind and in reckless disregard of Plaintiff’s copyrights.”

You may recall that, in 2011, Ivanka Trump has been sued in the past for copyright infringement. Fashion designer Derek Lam sued Trump to which she claimed he didn’t properly protect his own intellectual property. In Derek Lam’s case, he did not file a design, patent which must be produced within one year of publicly disclosing the product. Lam decided to sue Ivanka Trump with much harder to enforce trade dress infringement laws.

According to attorney Milord A. Keshishian:

“Some loyal readers will now state: “Wait another minute, if sandals are useful articles not protectable through copyright law, how in the world is Mystique filing a copyright infringement complaint against Trump?” As you can see from the sandal pictures, the stars and sea horses are separable design elements that are copyrightable subject matter and form the basis of the copyright infringement complaint. See Chosun Int’l v. Chrisha Creations, Ltd., 413 F.3d 324, 328 (2d Cir. 2005) (“individual design elements of useful articles are afforded some level of protection under the Copyright Act, so long as those design elements are physically or conceptually separable from the article itself.”)”
