When it comes to science fiction and fantasy there are what is considered to be a few ‘foundational’ stories and authors and one of those authors would have to be Edgar Rice Burroughs and his world of Mars and the character of John Carter.

The character of John Carter is that of a war weary soldier form the American Civil war who suddenly finds himself transported to Mars and embroiled in a war between its inhabitants.

When the word came that they were finally going to be making a movie out of the books by Burroughs there was a lot of gnashing of teeth and proclamations that is would be a failure. Now whether that turns out to be true or not still remains to be seen but  Disney has just released a featurette trailer of the movie to help build up the hype for it, and we have it here for your view pleasure.

While most of the entertainment industry was tuned into the Grammy’s on Sunday night the Bafta movie awards were being handed out in London and the big winner of the night was the black-and-white film The Artist.

Among the films big wins were grabs for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actor for French star Jean Dujardin.

In celebrating his silent films win for best screenplay filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius said:

“Some people thought there was no script because there was no dialog, so the British are very clever.”

In a funny moment American actress Meryl Streep managed to pick up the Best Actress award for her turn as Margaret Thatcher in the movie The Iron Lady. Once she made it to the stage Streep said of her walk to receive her award  ”That couldn’t have gone worse.” She then said the point of her film was to “locate something real, maybe hidden, but truthful in the life of someone we’ve all decided we know everything about already.”

In celebrating his 3-D film Hugo Martin Scorcese took home Bafta awards for production and design.

Last night, Twilight fans flocked by the hundreds to Target stores in order to pick up a copy of The Twilight Saga – Breaking Dawn – Part One, which was released at midnight. Fans who showed up to get a copy of the movie on DVD were also treated to a sneak peak of the final installment of the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn – Part Two.

According to MTV, the exclusive clip was played at more than 500 Target stores across the county.

If the video from the Target sneak peak, which is a little blurry and hard to hear, doesn’t satisfy your hunger for Twilight, Collider reports that a new trailer will be shown before the Hunger Games on March 23rd. (You can see a trailer for Hunger Games here.)

The now movie will hit theaters later this year on November 16th.

The re-released Star Wars 3D movie had a pretty good opening weekend but it was no match for Rachel McAdams and The Vow. Star Wars – Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 3D brought in $1.1 million during its midnight opening and is on track to bring in $20 million for the weekend.

The Vow, on the other hand, took in $15.4 million and is projected to take in close to $40 million by the end of the weekend. Reuters reports that Safe House also had a good Friday with a $13.8 million take.

The Star Wars 3D movie may not be at the top of the box office but George Lucas said that he didn’t re-release the movie for ticket sales. (He has plenty of those. Since 1977 the Star Wars franchise has brought in more than $4 billion in ticket sales.) Lucas said that he wants to give a new generation a chance to see the movie on the big screen. And this time, he’s excited to do it in 3D.

Lucas told the Hollywood Reporter:

“Star Wars is one of those films — old films — that was designed for the big screen. It makes a big difference to see it on the big screen with the overwhelming sound, the picture and now 3D. We’ve had two generations be able to see it on the big screen and it was great. Now kids who have never seen it on the big screen, who have no idea how powerful it was — because all they had was DVD — have that chance.”

The three prequel Star Wars movie have been widely panned by fans of the original movies and it doesn’t look like 3D is helping the cause. Newsday writes:

“Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace” got dismissive reviews in 1999, and it deserves the same today. But you probably know that.”

Lucas says that he plans to one Star Wars movie a year in 3D for the next five years. Do you want to see the original series in 3D?

B-Movie fans, it’s time to get excited. “Iron Sky” tells the story that we’ve all been waiting to see. What would happen if Sarah Palin was president, Newt Gingrich set up a moon colony, and Nazi’s attacked from space? That, basically, is the premise of this terribly fantastic movie.

Here’s the official synopsis from the movie’s website:

“Iron Sky is dark science fiction comedy that takes place in the year 2018, when the Nazis, who fled the Earth to the dark side of the Moon in 1945, return to claim the Earth.”

Sarah Palin isn’t specifically listed in the credits. Instead, actress Stephanie Paul plays a character called simply “The President of the United States.” It does seem, however, that Paul is doing a Sarah Palin impression in the trailer.

“Iron Sky” will debut this weekend at the Berlin International Film Festival. Director Timo Vuorensola said:

“It is simply mind-blowing that we get to have the world premiere of Iron Sky in Berlin, of all places!. I hope the movie’s antifascist message will resound with audiences.”

The film is bound to have at least some financial success since it was partially financed by fans through the film’s website. According to Wired, “Iron Sky” will open in Finland on April 4th. It will hit the United States during the South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas.

Titanic is probably the most loved and prominent romantic film of the past decade or so, and it’s due for a re-release in April… in 3D.

The film has something for everyone- a tale of forbidden love aboard the doomed vessel for the ladies and Kate Winslet’s ample boobage for the dudes. And while the flick won’t hit theaters officially for almost two months, a free Valentine’s screening for Titanic 3D was announced last week. Free, on Valentine’s Day, when everything is costs three times as much and you have to tip the valet!

McG, the man behind Charlie’s Angels and this weeks opening movie This Means War has become attached to the Broadway adaptation Spring Awakening and he’s hoping that Glee star Lea Michele will consider taking on the leading role in the Broadway hits movie to the silver screen.

He sat down to talk with E! Online and revealed:

“We’re talking to Lea Michele because she made the role of Wendla famous and we’ll see if that pans out and works with the timing of her schedule on ['Glee'].”

Choosing Lea Michele for the lead role in Spring Awakening is a no-brainer after she originated the role of Wendla in the 2006 Broadway hit and received a Drama Desk Award.

If you’re unfamiliar with “Spring Awakening” the musical takes place in 1892 German and features a group of teenagers who discover sex for the first time. The play has been controversial because it portrays acts of homosexuality, rape, suicide and teen sex.

It’s been a busy time for Lea Michele in the world of music, not only is she an uber-star on Glee, she was also recently tied to Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Les Miserable, a role that eventually went to Samantha Barks.

Miley Cyrus is out and Selena Gomez is in on the set of Adam Sandler’s upcoming vampire movie Hotel Transylvania. Selena will play Dracula’s daughter in the animated flick.

In the film Adam Sandler places a version of Dracula who operates a high-end resort outside of the human world. Dracula eventually freaks out when a boy from the human world discovers the park and falls for Dracula’s teen-aged daughter.

Also starring in Hotel Transylvania is Andy Samberg, Cee Lo Green and Kevin James, the movie is set for a September 2012 release date.

It’s a busy year for Gomez who is also slated to start shooting Spring Breakers in Florida, that movie costars James Franco and Vanessa Hudgens.

In the meantime Miley Cyrus hasn’t exactly been sitting still since Disney’s Hannah Montana went off the air, the Disney star has finished filming LOL and So Undercover which are both slated for 2012 releases.

I’m particularly interested in seeing how Cyrus handles So Undercover in which she plays a tough, street-smart private eye is hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority. I simply can’t buy Miley as anyone other then a confused teen with a crush.

Billy Connolly is making his way to middle earth for a part in Peter Jackson’s two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. 

Connolly will play Dain Ironfoot, a dwarf warrior and the cousin of Thorin Oakenshield.

Peter Jackson tells The Hollywood Reporter:

“We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connelly, the Big Yin himself. With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can’t wait to see him on the Battlefield!”

Connolly has most recently been seen in the TV show House M.D., Gulliver’s Travels, The Boondock Saints and Good Sharma

The first part of the new two-part Hobbit retelling is due in theaters on Dec. 14.

Do you think Billy Connolly is the right match for Dain Ironfoot? He definitely looks the role to me and Peter Jackson has been excellent at picking the right actors for J.R.R. Tolkiens characters in the past.

Although Tom Cruise has been receiving most of the praised reviews from Adam Shankman’s film  adaption of the  hit musical “Rock of Ages”, it’s reported that the 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin is giving him a run for his money.

Baldwin, 53, plays the owner of The Bourbon, a Sunset Strip club facing closure in the wake of the 1980s. When the trailer hit late last year there were many different looks for the cast, including Tom Cruise’s long hair and shirtless body, Catherine Zeta-Jones jumping back into her sophisticated sexy image once seen in Chicago, but it’s Alec Baldwin who puts up with the most image change.

From suits to long hair and outrageous outfits in the 80s period Adam Shankman is convinced that Baldwin makes it work, sort of. “If that wig didn’t work, then the whole thing was going to be a disaster. The world is so used to seeing him as Jack Donaghy, and I needed to get him as far away from Jack Donaghy as I could.” Shankman said Baldwin took a special on-set liking to Brand. “He and Russell ended up being like Tracy and Hepburn. They were so giddy, and they did everything together.”

Joseph Gordon Levitt, actor and CEO of digital collaboration company HitRecord will be making his directorial debut. The actor and social network entrepreneur announced to Deadline that he will be making his directorial feature debut in an Untitled comedy which he will star with Scarlett Johansson.

Gordon-Levitt has penned the script and Nicolas Chartier’s Voltage Pictures will finance the film. Ram Bergman will produce for Bergman productions and Gordon-Levitt’s very own HitRecord Films will be in association. Shooting begins on April 16th. The film is said to be a sexy comedy about a man who’s trying to not be such a “selfish dick”. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will also star in the film alongside Johansson. The second female role is yet to be cast at this point. “I wrote myself a helluva role, one that people wouldn’t necessarily thought of me for,” said Gordon-Levitt.

Gordon-Levitt finds himself in the director’s chair in the midst of a huge year, with Looper, The Dark Knight Rises, Premium Rush, and Lincoln all coming out this year. His career is certainly on fire and he’s become a household name which seemed to happen very quickly with his reemergence into the scene with 50/50 after taking a break from acting.

“I was a child actor for years and quit at 19, went to school awhile, and a big part of why I came back was that I ultimately wanted to make movies,” Gordon-Levitt said. “I spent a year working with Chris Nolan, Rian Johnson, Steven Spielberg, and I did my best to pay attention. I’ve also been making short films for a long time now, I’ve directed a ton of them, and that is a huge part of why I feel comfortable and confident in this.”

With the bloated schedule Joseph Gordon-Levitt is taking on his role in “Django Unchained”, Quentin Tarantino’s slave-era drama will have to fit in there somewhere “It will be tricky schedule-wise, but I was honest with Quentin upfront,” Gordon-Levitt said. “He was so cool and encouraging. He said, ‘You strike me as the kind of guy who would want to direct,’ and I took that as high praise.” Gordon-Levitt is repped by CAA.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is a busy man lately. He was in two high profiled films this year, “The Ides of March” and “Moneyball”. Now according to the Hollywood Reporter he’s in negotiations to star in  thriller “A Most Wanted Man.”

The project, which is to be helmed by director Anton Corbihn (“The American”, “Control”) is based on 2008 novel by Andrew Bovel, which is to be adapted to a screenplay.

A Most Wanted Man is set in Hamburg, Germany and follows a mysterious Chechen/Russian man on the run. He arrives to an Islamic community looking for help his late father’s fortune.

Philip Seymore Hoffan is looking to play a chief covert spy from the unit in Germany who works undercover to solve the mystery of said man’s identity.

The producers who have signed on are Gail Egan (“The Constant Gardener) and  Andrea Calderwood (“The Last King of Scotland), in addition to Stephen and Simon Cornwell under Ink Factor, and Malte Grunert of Amusement Park Film. Film 4’s Tessa Ross is also set to produce as well.

The project is to begin filming in Hamburg, German September of 2012, and FilmNation Entertainment is handling worldwide sales for the film

Ready to see Hugh Jackman don the Wolverine claws again? Well, get ready because the much anticipated “Wolverine” sequel is being set for July 23, 2013 by Fox Studios.

The sequel has recently found its director in James Mangold, who puts the story in Japan this time around. 2009′s “Wolverine Origins” was directed by Gavin Hood. The sequel has seen its problems early on in the pre production stages with the production pushed back several times, but now it’s said that Fox is making this particular project a top priority for the studio.

This isn’t the first time this particular franchise has faced some drama. In 2009 a firestorm of chaos hit when the bootleg of Wolverine Origins hit the Internet, which saw the Fox Chairman step forward to protect the film’s integrity and boost sales that it inevitably lost from the leaked bootleg. “The version that went out is unfinished. It’s about 10 minutes shorter, doesn’t have key scenes, it wasn’t edited, and none of the effects shots were in any remotely final form,” Rothman said at a conference in 2009. “It’s a complete misrepresentation of the film and is deeply unfair to the people who have worked on it for years.”

In 2010 Gilberto Sanchez a 49 year-old father was nabbed as the bootlegger and sentenced to a year in federal prison. We’re betting that the studio will be extra careful about who has their hands on the sequel.

As far as the cast goes with the Wolverine sequel, the only one that’s confirmed is Hugh Jackman as the title character Wolverine. We’re sure he will be donning the retractable claws too.

The release date sets the film up against Lionsgate with Kenny Ortega’s much anticipated remake of “Dirty Dancing”, and Disney’s sure hit with “Phineas and Ferb”.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” won’t reach theaters in the United States until July 3 but that hasn’t stopped the movies team from dropping in on audiences and highlighting some of the new movies footage.

Sony Pictures this week took to 13 cities around the globe to promote the film with stops in Mexico City, Berlin, Rome, Paris and Moscow, Los Angeles, New York, Rio de Janeiro and London.

At the events visitors were first greeted with the 3-D full-length trailer for Amazing Spider-Man. In the footage Andrew Garfield is shown portraying both the bullied Peter Parker and in his familiar role as Spidey. Viewers are also greeted with their first look at the villainous Lizard.

Speaking to the audience in Los Angeles director Marc Webb revealed:

“I think there are a lot of things from the Spider-Man canon that haven’t yet been explored cinematically. This movie really starts off with Peter Parker and his parents, which is something we’ve never really seen before, and I think that was something we were all really interested in exploring as filmmakers.”

Garfield in the meantime appeared in New York City where he said that the next person to play Spider should be “half-hispanic and half-African-American” like the current reincarnation of the Spider-Man comic book character.

Thanks to the success of Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance and various successful dance focused movies the team at Step Up is once again back, this time with the Step Up 4 trailer which shows off some cool new movies and a killer beat.

As expected there’s a romance tied to the movies lead dancer and plenty of drama as teams battle for the right to be called the movies dance champions. Here’s the IMDB synopsis:

Emily arrives in Miami with aspirations to become a professional dancer. She sparks with Sean, the leader of a dance crew whose neighborhood is threatened by Emily’s father’s development plans.

The ‘extended’ spot that played during the 2012 Super Bowl may not have been all that long but you definitely got to see some of the action that will be coming our way when The Avengers hits the movie theater on May 4, 2012.

I have my fingers, and several other parts of my body, crossed that this movie is going to seriously rock because anything less that awesomeness is going to be serious let down to a lot of people.

Daniel Radcliffe’s The Woman in Black took second at the box office this week with a take of $21 million, good enough to appease many critics who wondered how the movie star would fair with his first post-Potter film.

Filmed for a reported $13 million if numbers hold up that means Radcliffe’s first outing generated a profit during it’s first three days of wide release.

The movie managed to pull off decent ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic while Daniel’s star power pulled in audiences.

Woman in Black trailed only Chronicle which was shot for just $12 million and took in $22 million. Chronicle received great ratings from critics and fans which helped it along especially with younger audiences and men.

Continuing her slump was Drew Barrymore who’s Big Miracle which cost $40 million to produce brough in just $8.5 million. While not her best outing the inspiring whale story still performed better then her last two movies Going the Distance and Everybody’s Fine.

In good news for film makers Hollywood box-office take is already up by 33 percent over the same Super Bowl weekend period last year.

Set in a dystopian future where 12- to 18-year olds in the outlying districts are chosen at random and forced to battle to the death for the amusement of the capitol city of Panem, “The Hunger Games” introduces the bow-wielding hunter Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) to moviegoers.

“There’s 24 of us,” Katniss says in the trailer. “Only one comes out.”

The new trailer opens with Katniss giving her sister, Prim (Willow Shields) the mockingjay pin. While true fans of the book will quickly recognize this as a departure from author Suzanne Collins’ original story, it does, however, do a nice job of setting up the dramatic “Reaping” scene in which Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place as a “tribute” in the Hunger Games.

The new trailer also provides a closer look at the infamous Capitol, more action shots of battle scenes from inside the arena and the tribute interviews with Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci).

Directed by Gary Ross, “The Hunger Games” opens on March 23. Other actors that will star in the movie include Liam Hemsworth, Amandla Stenberg, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and ALexander Ludwig.

The Hunger Games: New Trailer Debuts, Offers More Capitol Footage [Video] is a post from: The Inquisitr

On Tuesday, January 31, the toy giant announced that funnyman Adam Sandler has been tapped to tackle the lead role in the movie, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures.

“I think it will be a movie for the whole family,” Wayne S. Charness, senior vice president of communications for Rhode Island-based Hasbro, told Masslive.com. “It’s such a beloved brand. You just think about all the imagery in the game, and you can imagine what a wonderful world it will make on the screen.”

Not only will Sandler star in the Candy Land movie, but he’ll also write the script (alongside Robert Smigel) and produce it via his Happy Madison banner. Kevin Lima, the director of Enchanted (2007), is set to be in the director’s chair for this movie.

“The creative talent on board for this movie is amazing and we are excited to bring alive the world of Candy Land for kids and families everywhere,” Hasbro President and CEO Brian Goldner added. “Sony/Columbia has been a wonderful creative partner as we develop another of our games, ‘Risk,’ for the big screen. We are looking forward to working with Sony/Columbia and Adam Sandler and his team at Happy Madison Productions on this film.”

According to AceShowbiz, “Candy Land” is a live-action epic which centers on the adventure of a group, who try to find the lost king of Candy Land. The gang travel through such locales as the Candy Cane Forrest and Gum Drop Mountain.

The game-adapted movie project was initially developed at Universal Pictures, but the studio later ditched this Hasbro film.

Other potential movies adapted from board games which Universal has departed from in recent months include Ouija, Clue and Stretch Armstrong.

Today is Bill Murray Day, or as some people refer to it, Groundhog Day. People around the world have been watching, and re-watching, and re-watching, “Groundhog Day” on February 2nd for close to two decades.

The famous movie was released in 1993 and has dramatically increased the popularity of the century old tradition at Gobblers Knob. More than 15,000 people made the trip to Gobblers Knob today to watch Punxsutawney Phil check for his shadow (he saw it). Before the movie was released, the centuries old tradition was witnessed by a few hundred people.

1.) “Groundhog Day” is largely responsible for why there hasn’t been a “Ghostbusters 3.” Harold Ramis and Bill Murray had a huge falling out after the movie.

2.) The movie was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois, not Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. In Woodstock, there is a sign that reads “Bill Murray Stepped Here” on the corner where Bill Murray’s character repeatedly steps into a puddle.

3.) Tori Amos was almost cast as Rita. Luckily the part went to Andie Macdowell.

4.) Tom Hanks, John Travolta, Chevy Chase, and Steve Martin were all considered for the lead role but Harold Ramis thought they were all “too nice” for the part.

5.) Bill Murray was bitten twice by the groundhog during filming.

6.) According to Harold Ramis, Murray spent about 10-years trapped inside February 2nd. Some bloggers speculate that Murray relived the same day for much longer, saying that it would be impossible to become an ice sculptor, classical pianist, and poetry extraordinaire in just 10 years.

7.) Harold Ramis said that the idea for the movie did not come from the 1905 novel ”The Strange Life of Ivan Osokin” by P.D. Ouspensky. Ramis says that he was inspired by Friedrich Nietzche’s book “The Gay Science,” which describes a man who lives the same day over and over again.

8.) The main groundhog official is Bill Murray’s brother Brian Doyle Murray.

9.) Rita slaps Phil 10 times during the movie.

10.) Bill Murray and Harold Ramis have both served as Grand Marshalls at the Groundhog Day parade in Punxsutawney, PA.
