Authorities say a teenage girl from Missouri died this week while on the very first drive her parents allowed her to take alone.

According to KMBC News, 16-year-old Savannah Nash of Harrisonville, Missouri got permission Thursday afternoon to drive to the grocery store to pick up a few items for the family dinner.

It was on this trip that her vehicle was T-boned by a tractor trailer and she was killed.

Investigators said Nash was trying to turn left to go northbound on Highway 7 when she pulled out in front of the 2003 Freightliner semi tractor trailer.

The truck tried to stop but was unable to brake in time.

Nash, who had just received her driver’s license earlier in May, was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

Following the horrific accident, police said they found an unsent text message on Nash’s cell phone, and are investigating to determine whether texting and driving was a factor in the crash.

“There was a text message that was on her phone, however it was not sent yet,” Sgt. Bill Lowe of the Missouri State Highway Patrol told reporters. “That is a probable contributing circumstance to the crash. That’s all part of the investigation.”

A prayer vigil was held for Nash in front of her school on Friday morning.

KMBC notes that about 300 family, friends and classmates gathered at Harrisonville High School to honor Savannah’s memory.

“We will miss your beautiful smile, your laugh and your amazing attitude. You were always nice to me and brightened my day,” a classmate posted on a Facebook page created in Savannah’s honor. “All my love toward you and your family. See you someday.”

Sorry ladies, Hangover star Justin Bartha is officially off the market.

According US Weekly magazine, the 34-year-old actor got engaged to his fitness trainer girlfriend Lia Smith earlier this month.

The two reportedly met during a Pilates session at the Los Angeles gym where Smith works.

News of their relationship went public earlier this year when they were spotted enjoying a beach day together in Hawaii.

As for the details on Justin’s proposal, US Weekly reports that The Hangover actor popped the question during a trip he and Smith took to the Central Coast of California.

Though there are no pictures of the ring as of yet, US Weekly’s source says the rock as “just unbelievable.”

“They’re the cutest couple,” the insider told Us Weekly about Bartha and his new fiancée. “The trip to Big Sur, the engagement, the ring, everything. So cute.”

Ace Showbiz notes this will be the first marriage for Bartha. Prior to his relationship with Smith, Bartha dated Ashley Olsen for two years before deciding to part ways in March 2011.

In addition to preparing for his wedding, Bartha is getting ready for release of the final Hangover film.

Hangover III, which also stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong and Heather Graham, is scheduled to hit theaters next week.

This time around, the Wolfpack gang will reportedly involve the boys breaking Galifiankis’ character, Alan, out of a mental institution.

Terminator 2 star Edward Furlong has been arrested yet again for allegedly breaking a restraining order.

Just two months after Furlong was imprisoned for violating a protective order obtained by his estranged wife Rachael Bella (Kneeland), the 35-year-old actor was detained again this week, after he and an ex girlfriend allegedly got into a heated verbal exchange.

According to TMZ, police arrived at the West Hollywood home of Monica Keena on Thursday evening after she called and alerted them that Edward was on her property.

Authorities reportedly found Furlong hiding under a nearby stairwell.

Police reports say the actor, who has already been arrested two other times in 2013 for beating up his ex, was taken into custody and is currently being held on $100,000 bail.

He is due to stand trial in June on a charge of domestic battery, stemming from a previous incident.

Best known for his roles as John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Daniel Vinyard in American History X, Furlong has long battled alcoholism and drug addiction, which he admits derailed his career.

During an interview with People magazine in 2006 Furlong said that from ages 22 to 26 he was “on and off” hard drugs, adding that, “I was a heroin and cocaine addict. It was really scary.”

In the same interview, he said, “I don’t even think about [partying] anymore. It seems lonely now: running and clubbing and doing coke. I have nightmares about doing hard drugs. I’ll wake up and I’m like, ‘Did I relapse?’”

Despite his troubled personal life, Furlong has still been able to land a handful of acting gigs.

In 2013 he had roles in Uwe Boll’s Assault on Wall Street and Aidan Belizaire’s The Zombie King.

He is also slated to appear several more films including Awakened, Bind and in the made for TV movie Star Trek: Renegades

A deployed soldier gave his young daughter the surprise of a lifetime this week when he returned home from Afghanistan to greet her during a major league baseball game.

WTSP reports that nine-year-old Alayna Adams was chosen to throw the ceremonial first pitch in the Tampa Bay Rays’ home contest against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.

Adams had no idea, however, that her father, who had just returned from an overseas deployment, was waiting behind home plate disguised in catcher’s equipment.

Before her big moment, Alayna’s dad, Army Lt. Col. Will Adams, gave words of encouragement via satellite from Afghanistan.

“Stay focused, throw the ball and I love you,” Lt. Adams’ voice boomed over the stadium speakers.

He had been stationed overseas for the better part of two years.

After she bounced her pitch into the plate and went to retrieve the souvenir baseball, her dad removed his catcher’s mask, making for a heartwarming homecoming.

Local 10 News reports the entire event was a collaborative effort by the United Service Organizations, Tampa Bay Rays, and Alayna’s elementary school.

Following his emotional return, Lt. Col. Will Adams revealed the hardest part of the surprise was the wait to see his family.

“Well I got here last night,” he explained. “And that was the hardest part- being back and not being able to see them even though I was just down the street.”

An obsessed fan of Taylor Swift was arrested earlier this week after he allegedly swam to the singer’s Rhode Island beach home.

According to TMZ, 22-year-old Lucas H. Vorsteveld, of Chicago, was spotted by police getting out of the ocean nearby Swift’s $17 million dollar mansion on Wednesday morning.

As we previously reported, Swift recently purchased the sprawling 11,000-plus square-foot beachfront estate and paid cash to close the deal.

Upon being questioned by police, Vorsteveld confessed that he wanted to meet the country/pop singer but decided to swim back after seeing her security team.

The fan was then booked for trespassing and is reportedly scheduled to be arraigned on May 24.

After the arrest, a representative for the Westerly Police Department told TMZ, “There is a zero tolerance policy for trespassers.”

It is unknown if Swift was at her home during the time of the incident.

It isn’t the first time Taylor has come across an obsessed fan.

At the end of last year, 24-year-old Jacob Nicholas Kulke was arrested after climbing a fence and a secured gate at her home in Nashville.

The man — who was jailed on a trespassing charge — told police he traveled from his home in Wisconsin to surprise the pop songstress on her 23rd birthday.

Speaking about over obsessed fans, Taylor Swift told Cosmopolitan magazine in 2012:

“I get nervous when I have stalker incidents. I try not to talk too much about it because it scares me. Sometimes you get a dude who kind of wants to steal you. That’s why I’m so grateful I have people looking after me, like [my bodyguard] Dennis”

Despite her fears, Taylor said she doesn’t intend to live her life around stalkers.

“There are a lot of them. I just try to be safe and be conscious of people around me,” she relates. “It’s something you just have to deal with. It’s the price you pay for getting to do what you love. You can let it take over your life and make you fearful all the time, or you can live your life in spite of it.”

The daytime television world received some sad news this weekend.

Ron Weaver, the producer who helped launch The Bold and the Beautiful and then stayed on board to helm the show for nearly three decades, passed away on Saturday, May 11. He was 75.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the three-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning showrunner died at his home in Los Angeles.

Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, Ron Weaver started out as a ventriloquist, performing on local radio and TV and attended Michigan State University

After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree, Ron served a two year stint in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He then went on to study directing and acting with prestigious teacher Herbert Berghof before entering his career in TV production.

Prior to his work on The Bold and the Beautiful, Weaver served as director of operations and production services for Children’s Television Workshop, where he worked on Sesame Street, The Electric Company, 3-2-1 Contact, Feeling Good and The Best of Families.

He also played a pivotal role in the international launch of Sesame Street’s co-productions in Latin America and spent time as a writer at WCBS-TV’s Eye on New York.

Following Weaver’s death, current B&B executive producer Bradley Bell released the following statement:

“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Ron Weaver. Ron was talented, a good friend to all of us, and a 26 year producer of ‘The Bold and the Beautiful.’ He will be missed, will always be remembered and will forever remain in our hearts.”

Weaver is survived by his partner of 29 years, Franko E. Weaver; daughter, Jen Finkle-Weaver; son, Kevin Weaver, exec VP at Atlantic Record Group; and several grandchildren.

THR reports a private funeral service will be held in Encino and that Weaver’s family requests that donations be made to the Three Rivers Lions Club (P.O. Box 134, Three Rivers, MI 49093) or AIDS Project Los Angeles in lieu of flowers.

Homeland actress Morena Baccarin is going to be a mom!

According to US Weekly, Baccarin, who plays Jessica Brody on the hit Showtime drama series, is pregnant with her first child with husband Austin Chick.

The actress’ rep confirmed the baby news to US on Tuesday.

No other detail about the pregnancy, including the baby’s due date, were revealed.

Baccarin, 33, married director-writer Chick, 41, in November 2011.

Though her on-screen marriage with Marine Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) is in disarray, the Brazilian born actress revealed her real-life relationship with Chick is more than solid.

Baccarin, who had a leading role in the 2002 TV series Firefly, revealed to the Daily Mail of how she makes it work with her hubby of two years.

“You have to talk…a lot. Which guys love. You have to keep checking in, being aware of what is happening in each other’s worlds. Otherwise, you miss things, and then it becomes very hard to go back and connect the dots. But you also need to just know that the connection is there.”

Besides her roles on Homeland and Firefly, Baccarin has appeared in a handful of movies and TV shows.

In 2009, she played the leader of the alien species that came to Earth in NBC’s brief re-hash of 80s sci-fi TV miniseries V. She also had a recurring role as Adria on Stargate SG-1 and later reprized the part in the 2008 direct-to-DVD flick Stargate: The Ark of Truth.

In addition to preparing for the birth of her first baby, Baccarin is busy prepping for season three of Homeland.

The Showtime series, which ended Season 2 with the unraveling of Nick Brody’s marriage to Jessica (Baccarin), is scheduled to kick off the third season on September 29.

No word on how having a baby on board will affect the storyline.

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper opted to take a one-game rest Tuesday following a nasty collision in which he ran headfirst into the outfield wall while chasing a fly ball.

Harper, the reigning National League rookie of the year, suffered the injury Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the fifth inning of the game, with the Nats leading 6-0, Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis hit a ball deep into right field that looked as if it had a chance to leave the park.

While tracking the hit, the 20-year-old Harper ran headfirst into the right-field wall and crumpled to the ground.

“I thought I had the ball the whole time,” said Harper, whose spot in right field was filled on Tuesday by Tyler Moore. “I turned left. I didn’t think he hit it as hard as he did. I went back to the right side and I thought I had about five more feet. … I was looking at the ball and right when I turned around, I jumped to get the ball. Right before I tried to leap up, I just hit the wall.

Harper, who was forced to leave the game due to the injury, received 11 stitches in his chin and jammed his shoulder, but, according to Nationals manager Davey Johnson, didn’t sustain a concussion.

“His shoulder, (left) knee and head took the brunt,” Johnson said. “I’d say I’m more worried about his shoulder and his knee than I am about the stitches in his chin.”

When asked if the collision would affect the way he approaches future fly-balls, Harper said no.

“I’m going to play this game for the rest of my life and try to play it as hard as I can every day,’’ he said. “That’s my life on the line. At the end of the day I’m going to look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘I played this game as hard as I could and tried to make my team win a World Series every day.’ ”

A hardcore sports fan who set out to dribble a soccer ball 10,000 miles from America to Brazil in time for the World Cup was killed this week after being hit by a vehicle in Oregon.

According to the Washington Times, 42-year-old Richard Swanson was struck and killed Tuesday by a pickup truck at about 10 am while walking south along US Highway 101 just outside Lincoln City, Oregon.

He was declared dead at a hospital. The driver has not been charged.

Huffington Post reports that Swanson, a father of two, started his soccer ball dribbling quest to Brazil on May 1.

In addition to fulfilling a lifelong dream of attending the World Cup, Richard was also making the 10,000 mile journey to raise money for One World Futbol Project, an organization which donates durable soccer balls to people in developing countries.

“We are deeply saddened to learn about Richard’s death,” Lisa Tarver, chief operating officer of One World Futbol Project, said in a statement. “He was a very inspiring man who in a very short time walked his way into many lives. Our thoughts are with his family.”

Friends of Swanson described him as a loving father who was looking for the adventure of a lifetime.

“He was at a point in his life where he had raised his kids,” Richard’s friend, Kristi Schwesinger, said. “Both his boys had graduated from high school, he had no mortgage, he had sold his condo recently and was between jobs. And he loved the game of soccer.”

“The hardest thing is he was so young,” Schwesinger added. “Just today we were planning his surprise birthday party for Sunday. He was so young, so full of life, so excited by the journey he was on.”

According to the Sun.co.uk, a foundation is being established in Richard’s memory to send his two sons to Brazil for the World Cup.

Richard Swanson, Man Dribbling Soccer Ball To Brazil For 2014 World Cup, Killed In Oregon is a post from: The Inquisitr

University of Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb was reportedly arrested on assault charges over the weekend after an altercation in Boulder.

According to the Denver Post, the 22-year-old Webb and his former teammate Alexander Lewis allegedly knocked another student unconscious by slamming him into into a brick wall.

The victim, which was later identified as 22-year-old Lee Bussey, a student at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, was taken to a nearby hospital were he received stitches.

“Bussey and Lewis bumped into each other, which led to a verbal argument and a shoving match. The friend then told police Lewis repeatedly shoved Bussey into a brick wall, causing his head to hit the wall several times. The friend told police Webb then came and the two men shoved Bussey to the ground and began punching him.”

In addition to the assault charges, Lewis — who announced Friday he was transferring to Nebraska — is also facing two charges of harassment.

Despite the charges against Webb, Lewis insisted his teammate was never involved in the physical altercation.

“Jordan’s exact involvement in this incident is still being investigated,” first-year CU coach Mike MacIntyre said in a statement. “We continually stress the importance of appropriate behavior to our players and do not tolerate any detrimental conduct in our football program.”

MacIntyre added:

“As for Alex Lewis, as of Friday he was off of the team when he did a media interview and announced that he is transferring to Nebraska. Since he is no longer a Colorado Buffalo, it will be up to Nebraska to decide what discipline he might face.”

Webb and Lewis are scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.

In 2012 Jordan Webb was the primary QB for the Buffalos, throwing for 1,434 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions while appearing in 10 of the 12 games.

Authorities say an elementary school student in north Texas was killed this week after he was run over by a school bus on its morning route.

According to KDFW, 10-year-old Haven Lee Norton died Monday after he was hit by a school bus near Springtown, Texas, about 20 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

A Department of Public Safety spokesman said the school bus had stopped to pick up some children and was pulling away when Norton tripped and fell as he approached the vehicle.

Police reports stated the bus driver did not see the child approaching the bus as it began to leave the stop.

“The woman bus driver stopped the bus and activated the lights,” DPS trooper Gary Rozzell said. “The boy came up beside the bus as she deactivated the lights. The bus started to pull forward and the boy couldn’t get out of the way, and was struck by the left front of the vehicle.”

Haven was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were four other children on the bus at the time of the deadly accident.

It is unknown if a video camera was installed on the bus.

Following the incident, Haven Norton’s elementary school released a statement which read:

“We are deeply saddened to confirm reports that one of our fourth grade students from Springtown Elementary died this morning as a result of an accident involving a bus. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the young man’s family as they deal with this tragedy.”

The bus driver, whose name wasn’t released, voluntarily submitted to drug and alcohol testing following the accident, which is school district policy.

Investigators also thoroughly inspected the bus itself to see if the lights and brakes were working properly and found no issues.

It was released back to the school district, according to the DPS.

School Bus Runs Over Child In North Texas [Video] is a post from: The Inquisitr

Authorities say a middle-aged man who sawed his arm off in a machinery accident in Austria picked up the limb and drove himself to the hospital.

According to the AFP, the 37-year-old Hungarian man cut off his arm just below the elbow by a piece of machinery in Purbach, eastern Austria.

The man, whose identity was kept anonymous, was able to retrieve the severed limb from the machinery and drive nearly 10 miles to a hospital in nearby Eisenstadt.

He was later flown to a hospital in Vienna where doctors performed an emergency surgery to reattach his arm.

Police say the only reason he didn’t bleed to death was because he was in shock from the accident.

The Hungarian’s sawn off arm incident wasn’t the only of its kind in recent days.

In April, a California man entered a Home Depot store and attempted to cut off his limbs a hand saw, scaring customers into a panic.

The 50-year-old man, who has not been identified by authorities, was rescued by Art Hurtado, an off-duty paramedic at the store who used towels and a rope to make a makeshift tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

“There was pandemonium when I walked into the store. A lot of chaos, people running in all directions,” Hurtado told reporters at the time. “As I walked in, he was face down and I thought it was a crime scene with a fatality, that is how it seemed. There was a pulse, a very faint pulse and he was barely breathing. I knew I had to slow the bleeding down, or this patient may or may not make it.”

Hurtado said the man survived the self-mutilation attempt and it appears doctors were able to save his arms.

Police said they have spoken with the man’s family and are trying to determine what caused him to hurt himself.

Bethany Hamilton has found the one whom her soul loves.

Hamilton, a professional surfer who lost her left arm in a shark attack, will tie the knot with her boyfriend of one year, Christian youth minister Adam Dirks.

The 23-year-old announced the engagement on her blog in May, saying she knew Dirks was the one after he agreed to go cliff diving into the ocean with her on their very first date.

“The first thing we did was jump off a cliff together!” and adds, “I know Adam and I are right for each other and that God has us together for Him. Neither of us is perfect, but in my eyes Adam is just right and I’m thankful to have someone so perfectly perfect to share life with as one.”

According to People Magazine, Dirks proposed to Hamilton on April 9, 2012 and the two have since been prepping for their wedding day with counseling and prayer.

“Adam and I have been taking steps to prepare for a healthy beautiful marriage,” Hamilton wrote on her blog. “We take marriage seriously. Right now things are lovey-dovey and it’s fun and beautiful, but we want our love to remain through thick and thin. When we have hard times, we can rely on Christ and grow closer and stronger in our love and relationship. We know we can only prepare so much, but look forward to learning and growing together as we share life – to love beyond just a feeling.”

No word yet on Bethany and Adam’s official wedding date.

Hamilton was just 13 years old when her left arm was severed in an attack by a tiger shark when she was surfing in the North Shore in Kauai, Hawaii.

Despite her significant challenges, Bethany was determined to return to surfing. She went on to become a professional surfer and is now ranked among the top 50 women surfers in the world.

After going pro in 2007, Hamilton decided to share her story with the world in a book titled Soul Surfer.

The book was eventually turned into a movie with the same name, which starred Dennis Quaid and Carrie Underwood, in 2010.

Bethany’s character was played by AnnaSophia Robb.

Atlanta Braves right fielder Jason Heyward has been cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.

According to MLB.com, Heyward, who has been on the disabled list since April 22 after undergoing emergency appendectomy surgery, will play in a rehab game for Triple-A Gwinnett at 10:35 am on Thursday.

He will then travel with Gwinnett to Scranton, Pennsylvania, for a weekend series against the Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution notes that depending on how he performs during the rehab assignment, Heyward could make his return some time during the Braves three-game series in Arizona or when they return home May 17-19 against the Dodgers.

“We’re testing everything out, so far nothing but great responses from this side and my body,” Heyward told AJC earlier this week.

For those counting, this injury rehabilitation stint marks Heyward’s second with the G-Braves. In 2011 he played two games with the team while recovering from right shoulder soreness.

Including his brief three-game stint during the club’s inaugural 2009 season, Heyward is 5-for-17 (.294) with a double, four runs scored and two RBI in five career games with Gwinnett.

Prior to his surgery, Heyward was batting .121 with two homers and five RBI in 17 games.

In 2012, Heyward’s third year in the Bigs, he hit .269 with 30 doubles, 27 home runs and 82 RBI in 158 games for Atlanta.

He also picked up his first career National League Gold Glove for his stellar play in right field.

Over the course of his four-year career with the Braves, Heyward’s hit .256 with 61 home runs and 201 RBI in 445 games.

In his absence the Braves have turned to Jordan Schafer, Reed Johnson, and now Evan Gattis in the outfield.

Jason Heyward Rehab: Braves Outfielder Starts Rehabilitation Stint In Atlanta is a post from: The Inquisitr

Sports Illustrated is reporting that former NFL fullback Corey McIntyre was arrested this week in south Florida for battery.

Police reports say that McIntyre, who played in all 16 games for the Buffalo Bills in each of the past three seasons, was allegedly taking a bath at his home in Port St. Lucie when he got into an argument with a woman over information she found on his cellphone.

According to the arrest affidavit, when the woman tried to throw his phone in the bath water, McIntyre told officers he attempted to get out of the tub and pulled the shower curtain, causing the rod to strike the woman.

He then reportedly chased after the woman and grabbed her shirt, ripping it as she was trying to leave the house, the affidavit states.

McIntyre was arrested early Wednesday morning and hit with a misdemeanor charge for the incident. He posted bail later that same day.

Corey’s battery charge comes just three days before he was scheduled for a celebrity softball game against the Saint Lucie County Sheriff and Fire Department.

WPTV notes that event — held to support a local firefighter who was seriously injured in a December arson — had been canceled and was not expected be rescheduled.

Event organizers could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Unfortunately, Wednesday’s battery incident wasn’t McIntyre’s first run in with the law.

In 2009, the athlete was arrested on a misdemeanor exposure of sexual organs charge after was accused of masturbating outside a woman’s house.

He denied doing anything wrong, and the charges were later dropped.

Authorities say a helicopter was on a photography flight in Hawaii Wednesday afternoon when it was forced to make a crash landing in the middle of busy downtown Honolulu.

According to ABC affiliate KITV, 30-year-old chopper pilot Julia Link and a photographer friend were flying over Honolulu at about 3:30 pm Wednesday taking photographs when the bird lost power.

“First I thought it was a joke,” Link told KITV. “Then, I was like: ‘Oh my God, this is for real’.”

Per reports, the aircraft plummeted to the street, landing close to a large apartment complex and Hawaii’s Pacific University — an area is usually full of students and office workers and has a lot of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Amazingly, no one on the street was injured in the crash.

“It’s a pretty miraculous situation that no one was badly hurt by this,” said Capt. Terry Seelig, a spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department. “This is a pretty busy area.”

Link’s passenger, 71-year-old Karl Hedberg, was treated at the scene for minor injuries to his head. Despite the minor injury, Hedberg said he was grateful to be alive.

“I prayed before we went up and I figured, the Lord will take us down,” said Mr Hedberg. “We came in, we were skidding. I felt like we were at an amusement park.”

A preliminary investigation report by the Federal Aviation Administration indicated the chopper had an engine failure.

Three-time All-Pro Tampa Bay Bucs defensive back Ronde Barber is calling it quits.

Barber, a former third round draft pick who spent 16 seasons with the Buccaneers, is all set make his retirement official at a news conference at 2 pm Thursday.

“I’ve had a better run than I ever could’ve dreamed of having,” Barber said.

Ronde’s twin brother Tiki Barber, who retired from the Giants after the 2006 season, took to Twitter to confirm the news.

“Congrats & happy for my twin, Ronde, who’s hanging up the cleats!” Tiki tweeted.

During his 16-year career with the Bucs, Ronde Barber put together some impressive numbers including 1,428 tackles, 28 sacks, 47 interceptions, eight interception returns for touchdowns, 243 passes defensed, 15 forced fumbles, 11 fumble recoveries, and six additional touchdowns on fumble returns and blocked/deflected punts.

Barber’s 14 non-offensive touchdowns rank him fourth on the all-time list behind Deion Sanders (19), Devin Hester (18), and Rod Woodson (17).

Barber’s most memorable moment came in the 2003 NFC Championship Game when his 92-yard interception clinched the Buccaneers’ 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tampa Bay went on to beat the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.

“Ronde is synonymous with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, establishing himself as one of our franchise’s iconic players over a 16-year Hall of Fame-worthy career,” Joel Glazer, the Buccaneers’ co-chairman, said in a statement. “He approached every day the same, giving everything he had to make himself and his teammates the best they could be.”

In addition to his three All-Pro team selections, Barber was also a five-time Pro-Bowler and a 2000 selection to the All-Decade team.

CBS Sports notes he is the only player in league history with 40 or more interceptions and 20 or more sacks.

“No doubt about it, Ronde’s a Hall of Famer,” Barber’s former Tampa Bay Bucs teammate Derrick Brooks told USA TODAY Sports. “I wish him well. And I consider it an extreme honor to have had the opportunity to play with [him].”

Authorities say three women dressed like nuns were arrested Saturday as they attempted to smuggle cocaine into a popular Colombian vacation destination.

According to ABC News, the trio of fake nuns — ages 20, 32 and 37 — were were traveling from the capital Bogota to the island of San Andres when they were nabbed by customs officers.

Police said the suspects immediately roused suspicions as the fabric of their garments did not match that of traditional nun attire.

Upon being stopped police found two kilos (four pounds) of cocaine strapped to the ladies’ bodies underneath their habits.

They were immediately arrested and jailed on narcotic trafficking charges.

In their defense the fake nuns claimed poverty had caused them to resort to drug trafficking. They claimed their cartel boss forced them into the religious habits in hopes of bypassing detection.

BBC notes that the Colombian island of San Andres, just off the coast of Nicaragua, is a popular destination for foreign and Colombian tourists alike.

The island is also along a busy drug-smuggling route, especially popular with speedboats and submarines laden with cocaine, stopping off on their way from Colombia to Central America.

Oddly enough, the trio of cocaine toting nuns isn’t the only bizarre smuggling story of the month.

As reported by The Inquisitr on Saturday, two goldfish were found swimming in a jug of radioactive water in a restricted area of a nuclear power plant in Ohio.

Investigations are currently under way to determine how the goldfish were smuggled into the facility.

Less than a week after he was selected by the Cleveland Browns, defensive end Armonty Bryant was busted for drunken driving.

According to ESPN, the 263-pound rookie lineman was arrested in Oklahoma on a DUI violation at 3:45 am Friday.

After pulling Bryant over, police reportedly attempted to administered a standard field sobriety test but had problems getting him to comply with a breathalyzer test. When Bryant finally submitted to the test he produced a result of 0.098.

Oklahoma’s legal limit for intoxication is 0.08.

“We are aware of the incident and are now in the process of collecting more information,” Browns vice president of media relations Neal Gulkis said in a statement.“We will not have any further comment.”

Friday’s DUI incident wasn’t Bryant’s first run-in with the law.

In 2012 the East Central University product was suspended for three games after twice being arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover agent in a school zone.

He pleaded no contest in October and was given a five-year deferred sentence with two years of supervised probation.

Despite his tainted past, Bryant, the 217th overall pick, assured reporters during his draft day conference call that he was a changed man.

“Good people make mistakes, is something that I’ve always been told by my head coach,” Bryant said. “I feel like it was just a stupid move on my part. I should have been more mature about the situation and be more focused on football, which is something I really want to do with my life. Now that I’ve gotten that second chance, I feel like I won’t let anyone down. I won’t let myself, the people around me or the Cleveland Browns down. I appreciate them for taking this chance on me.”

Following his arrest, Bryant posted $500 bail and was released from the Pontotoc County Justice Center at 10:30 am Friday.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

German automaker BMW has announced it is recalling 220,000 of its 3 Series vehicles over an air bag problem that already has affected more than one million cars in the United States and over three million world wide.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affected models — which include 3-Series models from 2002 and 2003, BMW M3 Coupe and M3 Convertible — may be equipped with faulty airbag inflators that may deploy with too much force, causing the inflator to rupture.

The initial recall was announced last month in Japan, but BMW said it needed more time to determine which vehicles were affected.

Though BMW was not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue nor of any improper deployments of the airbags in its vehicles, company spokesman Dave Buchko said the defect presented a “risk of fires starting or of passengers being injured by metal fragments shooting up toward the windshield or down into the passenger foot well.”

In the United States, the NHTSA said 42,080 BMW vehicles will be recalled.

BMW is replacing the air bags free of charge for each customer in a service that takes about an hour.

Per the recall notice, the airbags were built by Japanese giant Takata Corporation, the same company that provides automotive parts for several automakers.

Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Mazda have recalled no less than 3.4 million vehicles worldwide, with the first two brands leading the pack with more than one million units each.

Reuters notes that during all this time, there appeared to be only six reported incidents on the road – four in the United States and two in Japan – and another six at Japanese salvage yards dismantling cars. There were no reported injuries.

Former New York Jets cornerback Cliff Harris has had quite the week.

Just days after the University of Oregon standout was busted for possession of marijuana — and subsequently cut from the Jets team — authorities say Harris was arrested on a charge of domestic harassment after witnesses reported him assaulting his girlfriend.

According to KGW8 News, the alleged incident occurred on Friday around 10:00pm outside a Buffalo Wild Wings in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Hillsboro Police Lt. Reimann said the department received reports that Harris, 22, and his girlfriend were fighting in a parking structure near the restaurant.

“We understood that there was some pushing and shoving going on between the two,” said Lt. Reimann.

Reimann said that the woman didn’t press charges.

After his arrest, Harris posted bail and was released from jail Saturday afternoon.

He’s expected to appear in court this week.

Unfortunately, Harris is no stranger to run-ins with the law.

In 2011 he was dismissed from the Ducks’ football program for violation of team rules after a series of traffic-related offenses, including driving over 100 mph on Interstate 5 with a suspended license.

In another incident, Harris was quoted as telling police he “smoked it all,” in reference to a question about marijuana after he was pulled over for speeding.

Harris originally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in April 2012 but was cut four months later.

He has yet to play in a NFL game.

A Colorado elementary school teacher is on paid administrative leave after she reportedly taped her students’ mouths shut with Scotch Tape when they wouldn’t be quiet in the library.

According to Huff Po, the alleged taping incident took place on Thursday at the Fulton Academy of Excellence in Aurora, Colorado.

The teacher, who has not been identified, told police that as she was preparing to take the class to the library she joked that, “Maybe if I taped your mouths shut that would keep you quiet.”

The teacher then said that some of the children responded and enthusiastically asked to get their mouths taped shut, even the child at the center of the child abuse investigation.

Parents of the students, however, gave a different story when questioned on the incident.

“My daughter’s been in the house crying, begging me not to send her back to school,” Tenisha Bynes told 9News. “She said that she’ll do good in home school and she promises. She doesn’t want to go back to a public school.”

After conducting interviews with the students at the school police determined there was no probable cause to file charges or make an arrest.

The teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. It is not clear when the teacher will be allowed back in the classroom.

The school district issued a statement saying it’s taking the matter seriously and will conduct its own investigation.

“Due to privacy laws, we are unable to discuss these allegations specifically. When we receive allegations of this nature, we immediately contact the police, begin our own investigation and possibly place the staff member on administrative leave during the investigation. We do not condone any inappropriate adult conduct toward students, and we cooperate fully with the police,” said spokeswoman Paula Hans.

Colorado Teacher Tapes Mouths Of Students To Quiet Them [Video] is a post from: The Inquisitr

Authorities say at least two people died and 14 were injured after a train carrying chemicals derailed and caught on fire in Belgium.

According to Infrabel, the organization responsible for the Belgian railway network, the accident occurred Saturday around 2:00 am local time as the train changed tracks between the towns of Schellebelle and Wetteren.

Six of the train’s 13 cars derailed and two were thrown on to their side by the force of derailment.

The train, which was reportedly loaded down with the toxic chemical compound acrylonitrile, was traveling from the Netherlands to Ghent’s seaport.

The blaze caused by the crash led to a series of explosions in the railway cars, prompting authorities to evacuate residents living more than 500 yards from the site of the accident.

Residents living within 1000 yards of where the train derailed were also warned to stay indoors with their windows shut.

“There is a problem of poisoning linked to the smoke,” Interior Minister Joelle Milquet said. “But there is also another reaction, since some of the chemical product went into the drains and caused a kind of chemical reaction with gases that are toxic and escaped into certain streets beyond the perimeter that had already been evacuated due to the fire.”

The International Business Times notes two similar accidents involving trains carrying tanks of toxic products occurred in Belgium in May 2012.

While the rail service has not commented on the cause of the crash observers said the train might have been traveling too fast.

The train derailment comes less than month after a bus carrying Russian school children crashed into a ravine in northern Belgium.

Authorities say four people were killed and six more were injured over the weekend during a drive-by shooting in eastern Puerto Rico.

According to Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia, a group of gunmen opened fire Saturday into a crowded barbeque restaurant in the central mountain town of Aguas Buenas.

Police reports identified the victims to be Marin Cotto, 45, and her daughter Griselda of Jesus Cotto, 17; Mansueta Manuel Hernandez, 55, and Luis D. González Torres, 32.

The six injured were rushed to the nearby Hospital Aguas Buenas were they were treated for gunshot wounds.

Police say one of the injured, 24-year-old Cardona Garcia, is in critical condition after being airlifted to a specialty clinic for an emergency surgery.

“This patient was transported by air ambulance facilities last night at the Emergency Medical Center. He was treated by the doctor of emergency medicine and trauma surgery Stabilization Unit, later taken to the operating room, “said Rio Piedras Medical Center director Dr. Israel Ayala.

“He’s recovering from surgery and you have to give time for the body to react, respond, to all treatment. In the next 48 hours we will have a clearer idea of ​​the prognosis,” Ayala added.

ABC reports since the shooting, no one has been arrested, and police say they don’t yet have a motive.

ESPN news is reporting that Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington has been arrested in Phoenix after a dispute with his former girlfriend.

According to the report, Washington, a third-year player out of Texas Christian University, was taken into custody Friday morning on two felony charges of aggravated assault.

Washington’s ex-girlfriend, Ciera MacDonald, claims the athlete grabbed her by the throat and shoved her to the ground following an argument over child visitation at her apartment Wednesday. MacDonald reportedly suffered a broken collarbone in the assault, as well as bruising and cuts on her arm, hip and leg.

Washington’s bond was set at $4,200. He is expected back in court on May 9.

“This is a legal matter and I am limited in what I can say other than that my lawyer and I will continue to cooperate with investigators and welcome the opportunity for all the facts to be presented,” Washington said in a statement released Friday. “I regret that the situation has brought this kind of attention to my family and my team. I look forward to resolving it as soon as possible.”

Friday’s arrest wasn’t the only trouble Washington has ran into in the off season.

In early April, the 26-year-old was hit with a four-game suspension (to be carried out at the beginning of the 2013 season) for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Following Washington’s arrest, the Cardinals released a statement on their website which said:

“These are serious accusations that we are closely monitoring. Until all the facts are determined, and out of respect for the process, we will decline any further comment at this point.”

A second round pick of the Cardinals in 2010, Washington had a breakout season in 2012, with 134 tackles, nine sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.

He signed a six-year, $32-million contract extension in September. The deal includes a $10 million option bonus payable in March 2014.

A Florida police officer is fighting to keep his job after previously being fired eight times.

According to WFTV Orlando News, Sgt. German Bosque, Bosque has been fired eight times by three police departments in Florida, including six firings from his current job at Opa-locka in Miami-Dade County.

In a hearing Wednesday, city officials said Bosque should be fired yet again after he left his AR-15 rifle with his girlfriend’s father while he was on leave last year.

Their argument is that Bosque’s decision violated the department’s policy that an officer’s weapon should be secured at all times.

“We’re here on a very simple matter. It’s going to be up to the arbitrator. We think what the officer did was wrong,” said Opa-Locka City Attorney Joseph Geller.

During the case Geller noted that Bosque was the “most disciplined, fined, fired, arrested police officer in the state.”

In the past, German has battled a series of allegations — all of which he has beaten.

Among them are claims of “cracking the head of a handcuffed suspect, beating juveniles, hiding drugs in his police car, stealing from suspects, defying direct orders and lying and falsifying police reports.

WFTV notes he also allegedly once called in sick to take a vacation to Cancún.

“It’s allegations. Allegations are not convictions,” said Bosque’s union-provided attorney, Andrew Axelrad. “We have a system in place, and that system is a fair system.”

Per CBS, Bosque had previously signed a deal with the city agreeing that one more strike would be his last.

The city is arguing that leaving his 30-shot rapid fire assault rifle in the custody of his girlfriend’s father — a licensed security guard — qualifies as the ninth strike.

A decision in the case is expected to be issued in 60 to 90 days.

Nestle Pizza Company is recalling an undetermined amount of DiGiorno and California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizzas that may contain small plastic fragments.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Nestle ordered the recall after several consumers reported finding small bits of clear plastic in their California Pizza Kitchen Crispy Thin Crust White pizza.

The pizza’s affected were manufactured at the company’s plant in Little Chute, Wisconsin and distributed between February 26 and March 9 nationwide.

The problem was apparently related to the spinach in the pizza, so Nestle is recalling other pizza products that used the same lot of spinach

The specific products are listed below:

Nestle’s frozen pizza recall is the third time in recent days a major food manufacturer has recalled a product due to foreign materials found in the food.

Last October, Kellogg’s recalled an estimated 3.2 million boxes of Mini-Wheats in the United States, Canada and Mexico due to possible fragments of metal mesh that may have gotten into the products.

In January, Kellogg’s issued a separate recall for Special K Red Berries cereal because of glass fragments found in some boxes of the product.

In an attempt to boost revenue and make loyal customers happier, Frontier Airlines will begin charging passengers $100 per carry-on item this summer.

Frontier said Wednesday it will begin charging customers for carry-on bags if the customer is flying on a “basic fare,” an economy ticket purchased on a site other than Frontier’s website, FlyFrontier.com.

Those fliers who pay in advance for their carry-on bag will be charged $25, while those who wait to pay at the gate will be forced to cough up $100.

Passengers who buy their tickets on the airline’s website won’t have to pay a carry-on fee.

“With this change, we are ensuring that our most loyal customers – Ascent and Summit level members of EarlyReturns, those who book Economy, Classic and Classic Plus tickets, including all customers who book through FlyFrontier.com, will have more space onboard the aircraft for their carry-on bags,” Frontier CEO David Siegel said in the airline’s announcement.

In addition to the carry-on fee hike, Frontier said it also will begin charging passengers $2 for coffee, tea, soda and juice.

The airline said it would announce the implementation date for the changes later this spring.

Frontier is not the first airline to implement a fee to stow a suitcase in the overhead bins.

Last year, Spirit Airlines raised its fee to $100 for carry-on bags at the gate.

Business Insider notes the new fees are part of the general trend in the airline industry to charge more and more for services that were once considered part of the ticket price.

“I know this is hard for a lot of us to swallow, but airlines have the right to charge as they please,” aviation consultant Michael Boyd told USA Today about the growing trend of airlines tacking on extra fees. “They are not a public service.”

Alfonso Ribeiro is going to be a dad for the second time.

Ribeiro, best known for his role as Carlton Banks on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, announced Wednesday he and his new bride Angela Unkrich are expecting their first child later this year.

“Coming this fall: a baby Alfonso or a baby Angela!” the 41-year-old actor wrote on Whosay.com under a split shot of him and Unkrich as kids.

The new arrival will join Ribeiro’s 9-year-old daughter Sienna from his first marriage to Robin Stapler, which lasted from 2002-2006.

After a short engagement, Alfonso and 31-year-old Unkrich exchanged vows in Burbank, California, last October. In addition to family, several cast members from Fresh Prince attended the nuptials, including Will Smith who served as groomsman.

N’Sync singer Joey Fatone was also a wedding guest, as well baseball player David Justice.

“Just married the man of my dreams today… happiest day of my life,” Unkrich posted to her Twitter account following the ceremony.

In April, the proud parents-to-be celebrated their six-month wedding anniversary.

“So happy to be with my wife on our anniversary at TPC Sawgrass,” Ribeiro tweeted at the time. “Great to be with the love of your life.”

Besides his Fresh Prince role, which lasted from 1990 to 1996, Alfonso has starred in a handful of TV shows including In the House, Things We Do for Love and Shake It Up!

Former New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley reportedly turned himself into police in Alabama earlier this year after he was accused of abusing one of his six children.

According to a TMZ report released early Thursday, the 30-year-old Boley was arrested in February, in an incident that surprisingly flew under the radar.

Though little details are currently available about the arrest — which happened three days after Boley was cut by the Giants — reports confirm that the charges were of a physical nature, not sexual.

The 2011 incident allegedly involved Boley’s young son, who was 5-years-old at the time of the arrest.

The Giants released Boley early in the year due to salary cap reasons and said they were unaware of his legal troubles before cutting him.

Boley’s case was scheduled to go to a grand jury, but an agreement was reached which gave the linebacker a chance to enter a program which would result in the dropping of charges after completion.

According to the New York Daily News, the recent incident isn’t Boley’s first run-in with the law.

In 2011, just after allegations of child abuse against him first surfaced, a woman in Georgia who has another child with him filed court documents asking that his visitations with their child be supervised.

Two years prior to that incident, Boley was suspended a game after being slapped with a domestic violence charge for allegedly beating his wife. The Daily had reported that he had pushed her against a wall, threw her over a couch and shoved her into a kitchen cabinet door.

A product of Southern Miss, Michael Boley was taken in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. In 2009 he signed a five-year, $25 million contact with the Giants.

In his four-year stint with New York he recorded 351 tackles, three interceptions, 16 pass defenses and five fumble recoveries, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

He was also a member of the Giants’ Super Bowl winning team in 2012.

In a heartwarming video, which was uploaded to YouTube on Monday, Atlas talks about his mom’s “unconditional love.”

“At one point in my life I hadn’t been home for two and half years, I hadn’t spoken to anyone or sent any emails,” he says in the video, which currently has over 1.3 million views. “I knocked at the door, she opened it, she said hi, she smiled and she just asked me what I wanted for dinner. No questions asked, no whys, nothing, she just accepted me.”

As a response to his mother’s sweeping kindness, Atlas, who reportedly makes $30,000 a year, said he went to the bank on his birthday, paid off her home, and then presented her with the information.

“Over time as she is getting older she is having a harder time keeping up with the bills so I have been saving for the last few years, have been getting ready and kind of wanted to do something for her.”

As for why he chose to carry out his special deed on his birthday, he explained:

“I realize birthdays are a tradition and that tradition dictates that one should celebrate their existence on the day on which they were born every year. However for me, my life has always been about what I can do for those around me… I wanted her to know shes appreciated now, not just with this gesture but with how I interact with her on day to day basis. To know I’ve even given an ounce of hope to someone else means more then I can say. I promised you your home would be 100% yours one day and I’m glad were here.”

Congratulations are in order for supermodel Kendra Spears who is all set to become a princess after getting engaged to Prince Rahim Aga Khan.

According to Huffington Post, the 24-year-old Spears, who has modeled for the likes of Emporio Armani, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Marc Jacobs, will tie the knot with the 41-year-old prince in a traditional Muslim ceremony.

The date for the event has not yet been set.

The Aga Khan Development Network released the statement on Friday, along with the couple’s official engagement portrait.

“Thank you all for the kind tweets! We’re very excited!” Spears tweeted on Friday shortly after the announcement.

Spears, who was discovered in 2008 after winning a Ford Models competition, is reportedly nicknamed the “mini Cindy Crawford” because of a small mole on her upper lip resembling the fashion model icon.

Kendra is likely to adopt an Islamic name and convert to the religion, according to the Telegraph.

Prince Rahim, a graduate of Brown University, is the eldest son of His Highness Prince Karim, the fourth Aga Khan, a religious title among Shia Ismaili Muslims.

Karim was conferred his royal title by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth just as his grandfather received his “His Highness” award from Queen Victoria.

In addition to preparing for his upcoming wedding, Prince Rahim is currently involved in “poverty reduction efforts, notably micro-credit activities” through the Aga Khan Development Network, in places as far-reaching as Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The Telegraph reports his net worth is estimated to be somewhere in the range $800 million.

RICHARDSON, Texas — Authorities say a drunken deaf couple face charges after they confessed to beating their 5-month-old daughter to death because she wouldn’t stop crying.

According to KHOU, 35-year-old Hector Rene Cupich-Quinones of Richardson, is charged with capital murder, and Maria Guadalupe Zuniga, 37, faces a charge of injury to a child.

Per police reports, the incident happened early Sunday morning when Cupich-Quinones — who, like his wife, cannot hear or speak — became angry at the vibrations his daughter’s screams were creating.

“There was a dispute over who was going to take care of the child,” Richardson police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Perlich said. “The child was fussy, and they couldn’t get the child to quiet.”

In order to stop the baby from crying, Hector reportedly shook the baby, but when that didn’t work he hit her head against a counter.

Police reports say he then slid the five-month-old across the counter and she fell head-first onto the tile floor.

When an officer arrived, he found Cupich-Quiñones clutching a child who was “pale, not breathing and had bruises on her arms,” according to a search warrant.

The child was transported to Medical City Dallas, but died Sunday night at 10pm. Hospital staff told police they believed the infant girl was a victim of abuse.

The father originally told police the baby had fallen, according to the arrest warrant, but later admitted he and Zuniga had gotten into an argument over their daughter’s crying after a night of drinking.

Both parents are being held in the Dallas County Jail after their arrests over the weekend.

Cupich-Quiñones’ bond is $1 million and he has an immigration hold. Zuniga’s bond is $750,000.

Authorities in England say Bill Roache, an 81-year-old actor famous for his role in the British soap opera Coronation Street, has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Roache, the world’s longest-serving soap actor, has played Ken Barlow in the series portraying life in a fictional northern English town since its debut episode on December 9, 1960.

He was arrested at his home in northwest England over an allegation of raping a 15-year-old girl between April and July 1967.

“An 81-year-old man from Wilmslow in Cheshire has this morning, Wednesday 1 May 2013, been arrested by Lancashire Constabulary on suspicion of rape,” a Lancashire Police spokesman said.

Police in Britain do not usually name suspects who have not been charged.

“The man will be interviewed at a police station in Lancashire during the course of the day.”

“We take all allegations of sexual abuse extremely seriously and would encourage people with any information about sexual abuse, or anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse, to come forward and report their concerns confident in the knowledge they will be investigated appropriately and with sensitivity.”

Following Roache’s arrest, a spokesperson for ITV said: “Given that a police investigation is underway, it would not be appropriate for us to comment.”

It is understood Roache will not appear in the soap while investigations are under way.

The Daily Mail notes This is the second set of sex allegations to hit the ITV soap this year, after Michael Le Vell, who plays Kevin Webster, was charged with raping a child in February.

Earlier this year Roache attracted criticism after speaking out in condemnation of the ongoing Operation Yewtree investigation into abuse claims made against former English media icon Jimmy Savile and other celebrities.

At the time, the actor said the public should not be judgmental but be “totally forgiving” of people who had committed child sex crimes.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Tuesday that Brandon Brown, a current free agent third baseman that spent time in the New York Mets’ farm system, has been suspended for 50 games after results of a blood test showed evidence of Stanozolol.

Stanozolol, or more commonly known as Winstrol, is one of the most popular anabolic steroids on the black market.

Used to help athletes avoid being sidelined by injury and make them perform better, Stanozolol was one of the main drugs at the core of the steroids scandal that has greatly affected Major League Baseball in the US and caused the period from around 1990 to the mid-2000s in the sport to be known as the “steroids era.”

Former baseball stars Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens have both long been suspected of using stanozolol.

A 22nd-round draft pick in 2010 out of South Alabama, Brown spent three seasons in the minors in the New York Mets’ system.

Last season with the Class A Savannah Sand Gnats, he hit .222 with five homers and 34 RBI in 91 games.

His suspension — the 18th drug violation ban handed out to a minor leaguer this year — will be effective immediately upon his signing with another Major League organization.

Brown’s 50-game suspension wasn’t the only ban doled out to an athlete this week.

On Tuesday, the NFL suspended Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon without pay for the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the league’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.”

Blackmon, a first round draft pick out of Oklahoma State, signed a four-year, $18.5 million contract with the Jaguars in 2012.

It’s unclear if his suspension will jeopardize any guaranteed money in the contract.

Authorities say three people who were diving for abalone, a type of sea mollusk, were killed in separate incidents in northern California over the weekend.

According to KCBS, the body of 66-year-old retired Pacifica firefighter Cedric Collett was found Saturday afternoon in the water off Sonoma County’s Shell Beach.

Collett was reportedly diving with a friend, who went for help after realizing Collett hadn’t re-surfaced.

“He taught us so much about being a better person,” said Joe Panko, of the Pacifica Fire Department. “Sad our loss and his family’s. It’s hard on everyone right now. This is so unexpected.”

Less than 24 hours after Collet’s death, 36-year-old Kenneth Liu of San Francisco got caught in a rip tide Sunday morning in Sonoma County and drowned.

Later that morning, a third diver’s body was found north of Fort Bragg.

Authorities say the third victim, 50-year-old Henry Choy of San Bruno, was found about 15 feet below the water and might have been caught in rocks.

“Friends saw him in distress. They couldn’t get to him because of rough conditions,” Mendocino County Deputy Coroner Scott Polma said.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat notes the triple deaths were the first of this year’s abalone season in the region.

Abalone, a type of shellfish, is eaten and considered a delicacy in many parts of the world. Like other edible shellfish, the part that is eaten is the large muscular foot, which forms the majority of the body.

Due to concerns about over harvesting, many nations have limits on how many may be taken, and some entrepreneurs have opened abalone farms so that they can be harvested and sold legally.

TMZ is reporting that former Major League Baseball player-turned-actor Brad Lesley died this weekend at a hospital in Marina Del Ray, California.

Lesley’s ex-wife, Chiho Svimonoff, told TMZ that the former athlete had been living in a nursing home, where he was receiving dialysis for kidney problems, for the past seven months.

According to Svimonoff, Brad was rushed to hospital on Saturday night, and later died there from kidney failure.

He was 54 years old at the time of his passing.

Nicknamed “The Animal” for his aggressive playing style and unusual appearance (he was 6 feet, 6 inches, with long hair and a big mustache), Lesley played for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers from 1982-1985 and put together a 1-3 record with 46 strikeouts and a 3.86 ERA.

Brad later traveled across the globe to Japan and played two seasons for the Hankyu Braves.

His record in Japan is 7–5, 24 saves, 60 games over 2 years.

After retiring from baseball, Lesley appeared in several memorable sports movies such as Tom Selleck’s Mr. Baseball and Little Big League, where he played the crazy, mustachioed pitcher John “Blackout” Gatling.

Lesley’s other film credits include Brother (2000, as Moose), Big Monster on Campus (2000, as Arnie), Buddy (1997, as Ali Baba),  and A Boy Called Hate (1996, as the Moving Truck Driver).

He also made a brief appearance in Space Jam (1996) (as Himself), after Michael Jordan reportedly personally asked Brad to star in the film.

Chicago Bulls starting point guard Kirk Hinrich will not play in Game 5 against the Brooklyn Nets tonight because of a left calf injury he suffered during the the team’s 142-134 triple-overtime victory on Saturday.

According to ESPN, Hinrich played through the injury to finish with 18 points and a playoff career-high 14 assists in 60 minutes.

On Monday, however, Kirk showed up to shoot around with the boot on his left foot, saying he could barely walk without it.

An MRI revealed no tear in the calf, but Hinrich could miss the rest of the series.

“It’s real disappointing. You never want to miss playoff games,” Hinrich told reporters Monday. “Any time it’s hard, but especially in the playoffs, because that’s what you look forward to all year. It’s going to be hard to sit out and watch.”

In his first four games of the playoffs, Hinrich’s averaged 11.3 points, 5.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while playing 40.5 minutes per night.

In Kirk’s absence, Nate Robinson is expected to handle the majority of the point guard duties.

In just 28 minutes of action on Saturday, Robinson poured in 34 points, including 23 in the fourth quarter, to help Chicago rally from a 14-point deficit late in the game to force overtime.

“We’ve dealt with injuries all year,” Hinrich said at the Bulls’ morning shootaround. “Nate’s been huge for us all year. He’s had those type of games. He’s been huge for us. We’re confident in our guys.”

Authorities say a powerful explosion in the Czech capital Prague injured up to 40 people on Monday.

The blast, which is believed to have been caused by a leaking natural gas line, occurred around 9:56 am local time in an office building next to the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in downtown Prague.

Much of the building’s first floor collapsed, and windows of neighboring buildings were damaged. Nearby buildings including the National Theatre, across the street from the school, were evacuated.

“I was sitting quietly in my flat, making coffee,” one witness told Reuters. “Then there was an incredible explosion. I thought the building would collapse. I looked out the window, and there was only dust everywhere.”

While there were no official reported deaths at the time of this writing, authorities fear as many as four people may still be buried in the rubble.

“According to preliminary information, we believe that up to four people suffered from severe injuries in the wake of the blast and most other injuries, totaling around 40, are light ones largely caused by cuts from shattered glass,” Zdenek Schwarz, the head of Prague Emergency Medical Services, said.

Following the blast, some of the injured were taken to Prague’s hospitals for treatment while others, many of whom were hit by flying glass, were treated by rescuers at the scene.

Prime Minister Petr Necas said in a statement he was “deeply hit by the tragedy of the gas explosion.”

Chicago rapper Lil Reese was reportedly arrested over the weekend after he was found sleeping in a car in Champaign county.

According to the Sun-Times, the 20-year-old artist, whose real name is Tavares Taylor, was caught snoozing in a vehicle in the 4400 block of South Wells early Sunday morning.

A warrant — stemming from a February 2012 incident where the Def Jam signee is accused of criminal trespass to a residence with persons present, mob action and battery — had been issued for Reese’s arrest earlier in the week.

Officials at the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office would not give further information about the charges Sunday, saying they could not comment because Taylor was no longer in their custody.

As it stands, Reese, who is part of Chief Keef’s GBE clique, is being held for $100,000 bond.

In late 2012, Reese came under fire when footage was released of him assaulting a young woman named Tiairah Marie during a house party.

Shortly after the video of the beating went viral, Reese stepped forward and issued an open apology.

“Everybdy makes mistakes I was out of charcter & ive grown sense then Dont judge me for my past i can admit my wrongs and I apologize.#3hunna,” he tweeted October 26th.

Besides the beating incident, Lil Reese also drew suspicion after his 18-year-old rap rival Lil JoJo, legal name Joseph Coleman, was shot dead in September 2012 in Englewood.

The Sun-Times notes the day Lil JoJo was killed, the rapper created a video a street confrontation with Lil Reese. In the video someone can be heard saying, “I’m a kill you,” according to the Times.

Chief Keef later made headlines when his Twitter account displayed a mocking tweet reacting to Lil JoJo’s murder.

Neither Reese, Chief Keef, nor any of their rap allies, have been charged with any wrongdoing in Jojo’s death.

A Pittsburgh man who threatened ex-Steelers wideout Hines Ward will spend two years on probation.

According to Sports Illustrated, 26-year-old Joshua Van Auker pleaded guilty Tuesday to extortion charges after attempting to bilk Ward for $15,000.

Court documents show that in the fall of 2012, Auker contacted Ward’s assistant, Raymond Burgess, claiming to have damaging information about a woman that the four-time Pro Bowler previously dated.

Ward’s assistant revealed that an envelope containing the so-called “dirt” consisted of only papers, not photos.

Burgess declined to otherwise describe its contents.

Following the initial threat on Ward, Burgess went to investigators and afterward spoke again with Van Auker, who repeated the extortion demand by saying, “It’s called buying silence, brother.”

Detectives observing the second encounter in October arrested Van Auker.

Ward’s alleged former girlfriend was never identified in the complaint, and authorities never described the information Van Auker claimed to have or said whether it was even true.

A district attorney’s spokesman didn’t immediately comment Friday.

ESPN is reporting that former Atlanta Braves pitcher Rick Camp died Thursday in northwest Georgia.

According to the report, the 59-year-old Camp was found at his house in Rydal, about 55 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.

Authorities say that while an autopsy would be performed to determine Camp’s cause of death, there was nothing to indicate that he died from anything other than natural causes.

A Georgia native, Camp spent his entire nine-year (1976 – 1985) MLB career with the Braves and went 56-49 with a 3.37 ERA in 65 starts and 349 relief appearances.

Camp was cut by the team just before the start of the 1986 season.

Though he was a pitcher, Camp’s most memorable moment in the big league came during a trip to the plate.

On July 4, 1985, the Braves trailed the New York Mets 11-10 in the bottom of the 18th inning. With Atlanta out of pinch hitters, Camp stepped into the batter’s box and belted a game-tying homerun into the stands in left field. (The blast would be the only homer in Camp’s 175 career at bats.)

Despite Rick’s late-game heroics, the Braves wound up losing 16-13 in the 19th inning in what remains the latest finish to a contest (3:55 am) in major league history

The game was followed by a fireworks display for the approximately 8,000 still left from an original crowd of 44,947.

All-Star Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and be out indefinitely.

According to ESPN, Westbrook suffered the injury during Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinals against Houston on Wednesday.

Russell was advancing the ball past the half-court line in order to call a time out when he collided with Rockets guard Patrick Beverley.

On Friday the Thunder announced that Russell will undergo surgery in the next few days to fix his knee.

There is no timetable set for his return.

“Our team is disappointed for Russell. We know what kind of competitor he is, how much he wants to be out there, but it’s a medical decision,” General Manager Sam Presti said in a news conference on Friday.

“Our team as a whole, we’ve got a resilient group of guys, a lot of character within that locker room and a group that enjoys playing together and has been through some adversities over the last several years that they’ve been together. We’d expect them to adjust, come together and have different guys step in and play well collectively.”

In his five years as an NBA player, Westbrook has never missed a single game.

Prior to his injury, the three-time All-Star averaged 23.2 points, 7.4 assists and a career-high 5.2 rebounds in 82 games on the season.

VALLEJO, Calif. — Authorities have reportedly arrested a man they say opened fire at the father of a player in a Little League T-ball game in California earlier this month.

According to CBS San Francisco, 23-year-old Joshua Chi, of Vallejo, and another man were attending a little league game on April 17 when they started arguing.

Police reports say the altercation between the two men continued in the parking lot. When the unknown victim tried to drive away, Chi opened fire.

The victim was not struck by the gunfire, however the vehicle was struck several times, police said.

Investigators did not say what started the dispute.

Chi was arrested in Richmond on Wednesday at about 11 am and charged attempted murder and an unspecified probation violation.

He is being held in lieu of $750,000 bail.

Following the shooting, several parents of children in the North Vallejo Little League demanded increased security and police protection to ensure the safety of the players.

“They don’t need to see violence out here,” said one mother. “That’s not something that they should have to live with everyday. Fear of being harassed or hurt.”

The league soon after announced that they had decided to suspend all remaining games in the season.

“It is our every intention to remain strong and vigilant against any negative influence within our fences,” the organization said on its Facebook page. “Even though we know we will sometimes disagree, we will strive to maintain calm, mutual respect and self-dignity while resolving all conflicts.”

The Houston Rockets have listed star point guard Jeremy Lin as day-to-day with a bruised right chest muscle.

Lin, who played all 82 of the Rockets regular-season games this year (despite a series of ankle sprains), sustained the chest injury during the Rockets’ 105-102 game 2 playoff loss in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night.

With less than a minute to go in the second half, Lin was trying to chase down a loose ball when he collided with Thunder guard Thabo Sefolosha.

“It feels a lot better,” said Lin, who underwent an MRI on Thursday that didn’t reveal any damage beyond the bruise right chest muscle. “The worst part was the spasm-ing. That’s gone now. Now it’s just getting range of motion and getting pain free. I can’t shoot today. We tried to do the shooting motion just to get range of motion. Right now I have range of motion, but I don’t think I had any force.”

The Rockets host Game 3 on Saturday night down 2-0 in the Western Conference first-round series.

Although Lin is optimistic about his chances on suiting up for the game, the Harvard grad said he has learned not to make guarantees.

“I’m not going to make any promises or anything because I just don’t know,” he said. “Tomorrow we’re going to work on some more stuff. Today was all range of motion. Tomorrow will hopefully be some jumping. And we’ll go from there. See how it responds tomorrow. I really don’t know. This is something that should heal quickly. I’m not there yet. I don’t know when I will be. Hopefully, soon.”

Aaron Brooks would likely receive backup minutes at guard if Lin isn’t able to play.

Earlier this week, the 37-year-old actress welcomed a beautiful baby daughter into the world with her boyfriend, Shawn Sanford, a marketing director at Microsoft.

According to People magazine, Violet Grace Devereux Sanford arrived 7:57am on Monday, April 22.

She weighed in at 6lbs, 12oz and measured 19.5 inches long.

“We are overjoyed with the arrival of our beautiful angel and filled with gratitude that she is happy, healthy and thriving,” Montgomery told People.

CBS notes Violet is the latest child in the Montgomery’s family of women named after flowers including her mother Poppy Petal and her aunts Daisy Yellow, Rosie Thorn, Lily Belle, and Marigold Sun.

Violet joins a big brother, Jackson, 5, Montgomery’s son from a previous relationship with Without a Trace actor Adam Kaufman.

Poppy first announced her pregnancy in January. At the time, she admitted one of her hardest obstacles was fighting her bizarre food cravings.

“Little pieces of sushi talked to me in my sleep. Oysters lined up and did the samba,” she shared.

In addition to her duties as a mom, Montgomery is also busy preparing for the second season of CBS’ crime/mystery series Unforgettable.

The show, which kicks off this summer, centers around the life of Carrie Wells (Montgomery), a NY Police detective with Hyperthymesia, a rare medical condition that gives her the ability to visually remember everything.

Prior to Unforgettable, Montgomery played FBI Agent Samantha Spade on the CBS drama Without a Trace, which ran from September 2002 to May 2009.

Cougar Town actress Busy Philipps is having another girl!

Philipps, who announced her pregnancy via Twitter in mid-December, revealed her baby’s gender at the Case of You screening during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City April 21.

“We’ve known for a long time, but I just haven’t had the occasion to tell. We’re having another girl,” she told Us Weekly. “We’re really excited.”

The baby-on-the-way is the second child for Philipps and screenwriter hubby Marc Silverstein. The couple, who married in 2007, welcomed their first child, Birdie Leigh Silverstein on August 13, 2008.

Birdie, who is now four, is reportedly more than excited about being a big sister.

“She’s been asking for at least a year: When’s her baby going to come?” Busy told US. “She talks to the baby and she’s just really thrilled. I told her though that it’s okay to feel two ways about it. It’s okay to feel really excited and also nervous or mad or scared.”

As for her second pregnancy, Philipps says it’s nothing like her first — which is not necessarily a good thing.

“This one hasn’t been so relaxing,” Busy told E!Online in March. “It’s harder and easier. It’s going faster because I have my kid and work and all kinds of things.”

Despite the difficulties she’s faced during her second pregnancy, Philipps says she makes it a priority to hit the gym multiple times a week in order maintain her body.

“I love the accolades when I leave,” she said of fellow cyclers being impressed with her maternity workout skills. “I love ‘em!”

Busy Philipps is best known for her role as Laurie Keller in the television series Cougar Town, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Critic’s Choice Television Award in 2011.

She also had supporting roles on the television series Freaks and Geeks and Dawson’s Creek in the early 2000s and, more recently, made guest appearances on Community and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.

Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez could miss as many as four months as he recovers from a shoulder surgery he underwent in the off-season.

According to a report by The Boston Globe, Hernandez, 23, had a “minor scope” procedure done on his shoulder in early April and is currently rehabbing in California.

He is likely to miss the Partriot’s OTAs as well as the team’s mini-camp in June, the Globe notes.

Though it is unclear when Hernandez suffered the shoulder injury, sources say it bothered the athlete throughout the 2012-2013 season, his third with the Patriots.

Hernandez had agreed to a long-term contract extension through the 2018 season before the season began.

Despite the downtime, Aaron is expected to be fully healthy by the time the regular season kicks off on September 8.

Hernandez isn’t the Patriots’ only star tight end to undergo surgery this offseason, as Rob Gronkowski had multiple procedures done to repair his broken left forearm suffered in November 2012.

In early April rumors circulated that Gronkowski would be forced to go under the knife for a third time after developing an infection in the arm.

However, Gronkowski’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said that the reports were exaggerated and there were plans for another surgery yet.

In three seasons, Hernandez has 175 receptions for 1,956 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

2011 was Hernandez’ most successful campaign, appearing in 14 games, while racking up 910 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Combined with Gronkowski, the team’s two tight ends accounted for over 100 catches and 16 touchdowns last season.

The Patriots began their voluntary offseason strength and conditioning program on Monday, and the first OTA is scheduled for May 20.

Should Hernandez and Gronkowski both be unable to go when the regular season rolls around, the Patriots are likely to turn to third year pro, Jake Ballard.

Ballard, who missed all of 2012 with a torn ACL, caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns for the Giants in 2011.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Rolando McClain is facing new charges in his hometown of Decatur, Alabama.

According to police reports, McClain, who recently signed a one-year contract worth $700,000 with the Ravens, was arrested Sunday and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after a disturbance at a park.

WHNT 19 News cites multiple witnesses who said the athlete and a crowd of people were told to leave the park and that McClain refused and started to curse at officers. McClain, 23, was eventually handcuffed and taken to the city jail.

He posted $1,000 bond and was released a short time later.

“We are seeking more facts on this,” said Kevin Byrne, the Ravens senior vice president for public and community relations. “The only information we have at this time is from news reports.”

McClain’s arrest on Sunday was his second this year.

In January, the Raiders linebacker was detained by police after he reportedly signed a traffic citation with the name “F**k Y’All.” According to police reports at the time, McClain was given the ticket in Alabama for having tinted windows.

After failing to properly sign his citation, police arrested the athlete and charged him with trying to provide a false identity.

The former Alabama linebacker was also arrested by Decatur police in 2011 on assault and menacing charges.

He was later convicted of four misdemeanors — reckless endangerment, menacing, third-degree assault and firing a gun in the city limits — stemming from the incident.

The assault and menacing case however was dismissed in 2012 when the alleged victim declined to go forward after reaching a financial settlement with McClain.

On the field, McClain, the eighth overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft by the Raiders, was benched for two games in 2012 for conduct detrimental to the team after he clashed with Oakland first-year head coach Dennis Allen.

In 41 career games with Oakland, Rolando had 6.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, and no fumble recoveries.

Williamsburg, Va. — Authorities say a husband and wife from Nebraska died Friday when their single-engine plane crashed in Virginia.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the crash happened at 4:53 pm near the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, where the a Cessna 210 aircraft was supposed to land.

The pilot of the plane, Joseph D. Brown, 54, and his wife and only passenger, Susan S. Brown, 52, both died at the scene. They also had a dog on board with them.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen reported there were no injuries or damage to any property on the ground.

While the cause of the crash is currently still under investigation, a witness to the accident said he saw the plane when it first began to show signs of distress. He said the aircraft was coming in low and from the left

“I heard him pulling for power, trying to power up,” Herbert Gordon, a retired captain with the Williamsburg Fire Department, told the Hampton Daily Press. “The plane banked like it was coming into the airport, and it looked like the wind pushed it up. It’s wings were perpendicular to the ground.”

“All of a sudden, he just did a nose-dive,” Gordon added. “Then I heard a crash.”

Wavy10 News notes Brown was an experienced pilot, having clocked more than 4,300 flight hours in his background with the Air Force, mainly in B-1 and B-52. He also served combat time in operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

His official title was Major General of the Eisenhower School at Fort McNair, a premier Department of Defense national security training school in Washington, D.C.
