Proving perhaps once and for all that there is no God, The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s opening day sales have broken two box office records.

New Moon broke the record for midnight ticket sales Thursday ($26.3 million), and bought home opening day sales of $72.7 million Friday, ahead of the previous record held by The Dark Knight which made $62.2 million.

Industry observers though believe that New Moon won’t break any records over the weekend based on the previous box office for the first Twilight film, which dropped 41% on the Saturday following a similar big Friday opening.

Sales for New Moon for its opening weekend are being estimated at $110-$120 million.

A Courteney Cox family matter has bought filming on TV series Cougar Town to a halt as Cox has had to leave to tend to it.

What the Courteney Cox family matter is though is a complete mystery; an ABC rep would only confirm that “production on Cougar Town has been temporarily shut down in order for Courteney to deal with a private family matter” and reps for Cox won’t fess up to what the issue is either.

Cox is married to David Arquette, and the couple have one child. Reports earlier this year suggested that with her clock ticking at 45, she wanted to have another child.

Cougar Town has been one of the more successful new shows this year, with the show being picked up for a full season in October.

Troubled online auction giant eBay can add a new problem to their ongoing issues today (Nov 21) with eBay search going completely down for all users.

The issue, as the name suggests, results in eBay search not working by simply failing to deliver any results from the search box.

A notice to the eBay systems announcement page said that “due to errors in some of our backend systems, members may be seeing different errors in Search. This could be that “We were unable to run the search results you entered. Please try again in a few minutes” or a blank page, or simply the browser being unable to display the page.”

The message from eBay, which finishes by saying “Please note that we are working as quickly as possible to get this resolved” was posted at 1:37pm PST, where as we’re both writing this post, and seeing eBay search not working at 4:05pm PST, so 2 1/2 hours later.

We’ll update the post if we hear more. General auctions on eBay seem to be unaffected, although obviously there’s no way to search for specific auctions.

It’s the weekend, and that means its time for a fake celebrity rumor, and first off the mark Saturday is a Robert Pattinson dead rumor.

According to reports circulation, Robert Pattinson was found dead in his hotel in New York City due to a heroin overdose.

Notably, perhaps highlighting that there’s only so many ways you can fake kill a celebrity, the same rumor circulated nearly 12 months ago to the day.

For the record, Robert Pattinson is not dead, Robert Pattinson has not died, although we sincerely wish he career (along with the whole Twilight series) would.

The victim in this morning’s Miley Cyurs bus crash has been identified as the driver of the crashed bus.

53 year old Austin, Texas resident William G. Douglas, also known as “Uncle Bill” was named as the only person to have died among the nine injured in the crash.

The Cyrus family said in a statement that “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Bill “Uncle Bill” Douglas. Members of our tour are like members of our family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in the midst of this tragedy. He will truly be missed .”

As we reported previously, Miley was not on board at the time of the crash, which was apparently caused by the bus “drifting” off a wet road.

Oprah will announced on air Friday that she will be leaving her daytime talk show in September 2011 after 25 years on the air.

The show, which turned Oprah from a Chicago small time host to an international superstar, has seen a variety of stars appear on it over the years, while at the same time offering up a veritable freak show of guests, sort of Jerry Springer but more up market.

A spokesman for Oprah’s production company Harpo declined to say whether Oprah would be retiring completely, or appearing on air in new show. Speculation this year has suggested that she might appear on the Oprah network.

To many online, Oprah will be most fondly remembered for the lulz she provided after being trolled by claims that over 9000 penises were targeting children in the United States. “Over 9000″ is an old meme that is commonly used for trolling. Here’s that classic moment again:

A so-called Carmen Electra leaked video that at least according to some sites shows Electra in some girl on girl action is nothing more than a fairly disappointing publicity stunt.

The video shows Electra making out with another woman, and unzipping the pants of a cameraman…but that’s it. No nudity, no actual sex, and a controlled leak to gain publicity.

Electra’s career hasn’t exactly been stellar of late, with her only acting roles tending to be in cheap spoof movies where she always plays the role of the sex-bunny type character.

Australia’s biggest telco, and previous monopoly player has finally announced that they will switch on their 100mbps FTN network, a huge FU to the Australian Governments National Broadband Network.

The Fibre to Node Network, which was rolled out in Melbourne in 2008 but delayed to customers following the Australian Government’s announcement of a National Broadband Network (NBIN) is believed to pass over 1 million homes in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

As part of the role out, Telstra unveiled a PVR box to compliment its link in to Foxtel.

It’s not clear yet as to how much Melbourne people will pay to connect at 100mbps, but given previous Telstra pricing, it wont come cheap. Still, 100mbps…god it’s tempting.

WordPress founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg has called foul today while dodging issues on the ongoing conflict of interest between his involvement at Automattic and WordPress.

Several sites, including this one, published stories today suggesting that WordPress.com was moving to Microsoft’s Azure cloud hosting platform based on Mullenweg deciding to plug Azure at a Microsoft event. We’ve amended that earlier post, and we are the first to admit that the post was based on false reports elsewhere. I mentioned in the original copy that I hadn’t seen the transcript and in retrospect I should have waited for it, and it was my mistake entirely.

Unlike Mullenweg though I know that I’m fallible and can make the occasional mistake, and I’m happy to admit it. Mullenweg though continues to take a highly hypocritical role between his role at Automattic and his role behind the WordPress open source effort.

For those who aren’t up to speed: Mullenweg has undertaken a jihad of sorts for several years against commercial operators in the WordPress community. Mullenweg argues that anything that links in to WordPress must itself be offered open source (and be offered by extension for free,) a position that has punished unfairly many of the early supporters Mullenweg had behind WordPress in its early days as it took over from MovableType as the most popular self-hosted blogging platform.

In more recent times, Mullenweg has decided to take on James Farmer, one of Australia’s strongest WordPress supporters, and the founder of sites including Edublogs (perhaps the biggest WordPress education blog network) and the WPMU site and related entities.

James’ crime according to Mullenweg is that he both offers money for the development of, and sells (be it via a membership) premium WordPress plugins. We documented part of the spat here, and James has now been completely banned from WordPress.org sites (link.)

Let me make it clear at this point (particularly to the army of Mullenweg fans who immediately comment in his favor anytime I write about this): I have ZERO problem with him making money from Automattic. What I have a problem with is the conflict between him arbitrarily controlling who WordPress.org likes or dislikes based on how open source they are, when negative decisions are often made against competitors to Automattic and by extension WordPress.com.

You can’t have it both ways: either you’re an open source purist who hates commercial applications, or you aren’t. You can’t say you hate commercial operations except where they involve the company I founded off the very same code.

I appeal to all supporters of WordPress: put a stop to this ongoing hypocrisy. If Automattic wants to support the code base, that’s fine. But put the decision making for WordPress in independent hands with people who irrespective of whether they are pro or against commercial use of WordPress at least maintain the same policy for all, not just some. America’s Next Top Model Cycle 13 has been run and won and we have know who the winner is. If you don’t want to know though, stop reading past this point.

The winner of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 13 is Nicole Fox, who also becomes the first AMNT petite model to claim the title.

Nicole beat Laura Kirkpatrick on the AMNT finale after coming out ahead in a CoverGirl commercial and then sealing it on the final runway. Laura, who as the show detailed suffers from dyslexia, was more fancied by the judges on the runway, but froze when asked to say something emotional about the experience.

As the America’s Next Top Model Cycle 13 winner, Nicole wins a Seventeen magazine cover shoot and six-page spread, a spot at Wilhelmina Models and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics.

The casting call for America’s Next Top Model Cycle 14 was completed in September, with the new series set to show next year.
