Neil Patrick Harris In Glitter And Drag For ‘Hedwig’ Poster

Get ready for Neil Patrick Harris as you’ve never seen him before: in drag!

Harris tweeted the first pic of the promotional poster from his upcoming turn in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Neil stars as the eponymous Hedwig, a transgendered rock vocalist from East Germany.

“I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig’s heels,” Harris said when announcing his return to Broadway.

The musical, penned by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, debuted Off-Broadway at the Jane Street Theater on February 14, 1998. It is the groundwork for the 2001 film of the same name.

“I saw ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ when it was at the Jane Street Playhouse…gosh, twenty years ago or something,” Harris told HitFix’s Chris Eggertsen.

Neil Patrick Harris, first rising to prominence in 1989 as the titular role in Doogie Howser M.D., is perhaps best known to contemporary audiences as Bro Code-invoking Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother. In the HitFix interview, Harris discussed the incongruity of the two roles.

It’s gonna be super fun. I’m gonna have to change my whole body type and lose some weight, lose some mass and probably you know, shave in weird places, tuck. Walk around in heels.

Neil Patrick Harris characterized Barney as an “alpha male, mainstream guy.”
