Obama Hitler Comparison Made By Arizona Rep., Shutdown Goes Godwin

Obama is like Hitler, according to one Arizona Republican — who seems to think the government shutdown is in any way remotely comparable to the atrocities of the Third Reich.

Obama/Hitler comparisons are nothing new, but generally the insulting to so many people parallel is drawn not by elected lawmakers, but by your drunk uncle on Facebook. Thanks to Arizona state representative Brenda Barton, that’s no longer generally the case.

Barton not only invoked Hitler’s horrible memory when blasting President Obama on Facebook — she also used a mild vulgarity when decrying the effects of the shutdown, a circumstance incidentally brought about by her own party.

The lawmaker posted:

“Someone is paying the National Park Service thugs overtime for their efforts to carry out the order of De Fuhrer… where are our Constitutional Sheriffs who can revoke the Park Service Rangers authority to arrest??? Do we have any Sheriffs with a pair?”

Brenda Barton continued in the same vein, blaming President Obama for the government shutdown and accusing him of using citizens as pawns.

She added:

“While the POTUS continues to punish the American people, he keeps open his golf course, he keeps open Camp David, and he retains his and his wife’s excessive staff and stable of Czars! I’ll bet he has kept in service his 3 food tasters!!!”

(Are Czars standard perks of Obamacare? May I have a laundry czar, please?)

Amazingly, Barton kept with the offensive comparison between President Obama and Hitler in a subsequent interview. When asked, she claimed that nationalized healthcare — a provision available in literally every first world country aside from America — is an absolute harbinger of fascism and “death camps.” She actually used the term “death camps,” and said:

“[Obama is] dictating beyond his authority… It’s not just the death camps. [Hitler] started in the communities, with national health care and gun control. You better read your history. Germany started with national health care and gun control before any of that other stuff happened. And Hitler was elected by a majority of people.”

Fellow Arizona lawmakers called Barton’s historically shaky conclusion “embarrassing,” and one tweeted:

Of Barton’s comparison of Obama to Hitler, the Rep. said it is “not controversial that I’m criticizing him… I don’t think that’s controversial at all.” However, she does not acknowledge that the parallel she draws might be offensive given the gravity of Hitler’s crimes as a contrast to the closure of parks and implementing health care insurance exchanges.
