Willem Dafoe, James Franco Aren’t Fans Of The ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

Actors Willem Dafoe and James Franco aren’t exactly huge fans of director Marc Webb’s recent Spider-Man reboot.

Since the similarities between Sam Raimi’s adaptation and Webb’s reboot are too hard to ignore, Dafoe firmly believes the picture was made strictly for the money. The actor said he was a little shocked when he saw the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man for the first time.

“I saw a trailer for the first Spider-Man reboot and I thought, ‘This is crazy!’ It’s not shot for shot, but it’s the same story. I thought, ‘This is sort of a cynical approach to making money!'” Willem Dafoe recently explained to the folks at Total Film.

James Franco, who plays Dafoe’s son in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, tends to agree with his on-screen father. While he doesn’t have any problems with the remake itself, the Spring Breakers star said he was little amazed that Marc Webb and Sony Pictures moved so quickly to get the remake rolling.

“When great directors like Sam Raimi and Christopher Nolan show that equally great characters can live within special-effects-laden films, then the comic-book genre becomes legitimized and great actors will follow. But the biggest reason, we cannot forget, is money,” he explained to The Guardian.

Although Willem Dafoe and James Franco might have their problems with The Amazing Spider-Man, director Sam Raimi said he enjoyed what Marc Webb and company created. He told Hey U Guys earlier this year that he finally got around to seeing the reboot despite his initial apprehension. To his complete surprise, Raimi “loved” the movie.

The filmmaker explained:

“It was very hard for me to see the new Spider-Man movie, I felt so attached to it, I couldn’t see Spider-Man with another director; it’s like my love, and I didn’t want to walk in on my love with someone else. It was just like that. Then I got over myself last week and said, ‘just see the damn thing’. And I did, and I loved it. I actually felt free. I thought, ‘why am I carrying around this baggage?’ Of course the next Spider-Man story should be told, and [Marc Webb] did a wonderful job telling that. I loved the movie, and I’m looking forward like a fan to the next installment. I love the comic book, and now I don’t feel bound, and I’m really glad somebody’s remaking it again.”
