Justin Bieber Lays His Heart On The Line In ‘Heartbreaker’ [LISTEN]

Justin Bieber has finally unwrapped his new single “Heartbreaker.”

Teased since June, the song is the first release from the teen star’s #MusicMondays series, which will see a new track released from his Journals LP every Sunday at midnight over 10 weeks.

“Heartbreaker” was released at midnight (EST Oct. 7) on iTunes, with Bieber tweeting fans before the big reveal with anticipatory messages.

The 19-year-old returned to the social media networking site shortly after the premiere to post two tweets. The second was a surprisingly frank declaration about the background to the single.

“It’s a song for people going through a heartbreak – like I was when I wrote it. It means so much to me to share what I was, and still am going through, with my fans,” the Canadian wrote.

He added, “I’m very proud of this song and I hope it gives me fans some insight into my heart.”

Musically, the R&B slow-jam is an insistent, slice of emotional longing. A brief harp swell introduces a descending guitar motif that drives the melancholic track.

Vocal harmonies interplay throughout with Bieber’s lead, which moves between head and falsetto while delivering confessional lyrics.

Bieber sings: “Girl you don’t know how I feel, since you been away oh baby / Any chance that you could take my call if I dialled you today / And you say wanna talk but it’s cool, I been thinking ’bout you all day long hoping you”ll pick up your phone / And I know that I don’t wanna lose your love, ooh baby, ooh baby, ooh baby, ooh girl I got a secret place that we can go (sic).”

A double bridge delivers the 19-year-old to the soulful chorus which repeats, ” Don’t tell me you’re my heartbreaker / Cos girl my heart is breaking.”

A spoken interlude details communication difficulties in an estranged relationship, and is almost certainly about actress-singer Selena Gomez. The pair dated for just over two years and finally split earlier this year.

Sonically darker terrain opens up in the middle 8. Against a pulsing backdrop, Bieber sings:

“I still believe in love, I still believe in us / I hope you believe in us, the way I believe in us / You don’t see cos what you don’t see is when we don’t speak I really don’t sleep, I wanna talk to you and if I had the world in my hands I’d give it all to ya / I want to know if you feel it, the way that I feel it, I wanna know it you feel it, the way that I (sic).”

Less than two hours before the premiere, the singer tweeted his over 45 million followers, with:

Afterwards, Braun also took to Twitter and said of Bieber’s admissions in “Heartbreaker”:

The #MusicMondays series ends on December 9, dovetailing the wrap of Justin’s mammoth trek in Perth, Australia on December 8, and neatly leading into the debut of the Believe 3D movie-docu in theaters this Christmas, as per the singer’s website.

The Jon M. Chu-directed feature is the follow-up to 2011’s over $98 million grossing movie-biopic Never Say Never and is expected to address the “Baby” star’s dramatic year while mixing Believe tour footage, candid material and interviews.

Bieber is currently in Japan on the Asia leg of his Believe world tour and is shortly due onstage at Saitama City Arena.
