Daniel Radcliffe: Alcohol Made Me A ‘Nuisance’

Daniel Radcliffe thoroughly understands the effect his alcoholism had on those around him. According to the actor, his addiction transformed him into a “nuisance.”

The Harry Potter star recently opened up to the folks at The New York Times Magazine. In addition to discussing his career and where he’s headed next, the busy actor touched on his problem with alcohol and the trouble it caused his family and friends.

Shortly after he moved out on his own at 17, Daniel Radcliffe said he picked up some bad habits. Although he developed a fondness for smoking, it was the bottle that pushed him to the break point.

“I became a nuisance. I became the person in the group who has to be looked after,” he explained.

The actor isn’t shy about admitting his addiction to alcohol. During a chat with Heat magazine in 2012, Radcliffe revealed that he sometimes went into work drunk while shooting Harry Potter.

“I have a very addictive personality. It was a problem. People with problems like that are very adept at hiding it. It was bad. I don’t want to go into details, but I drank a lot and it was daily – I mean nightly,” he said.

Radcliffe continued, “I can honestly say I never drank at work on Harry Potter. I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work. I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes.”

At the age of 21, the actor hit rock bottom. According to The New York Times Magazine, Daniel Radcliffe decided to get his life back on track after blacking out back in 2010. This included revealing his dark secret to friends, family, and the public.

“I wanted to close the gap between the real me, what was going on in me, and the person that people perceived,” he told the publication.
