Lorde Apologizes For Taylor Swift Slam Amid Selena Gomez Comments

New Zealand newcomer Lorde, whose textured single “Royals” has taken the music world by storm, has apologized for saying Taylor Swift is too flawless to be a good role model for young girls.

In an interview with Metro Magazine (NZ), the 16-year-old — who currently reigns on iTunes US and occupies the No.3 spot on Billboard’s singles chart — shared her take on feminism and other female pop stars.

“Taylor Swift is so flawless, and so unattainable, and I don’t think it’s breeding anything good in young girls,” Lorde said.

The teen added, “I’m never going to be like Taylor Swift – why can’t I be as pretty as Lorde? That’s f-king bulls*t.”

However, the Auckland native has now clarified her comments about Swift on her Tumblr account.

The outspoken singer often interacts with fans at her personal social media account and took the opportunity to clear up any offence she may have caused.

Admitting that she “cocked that up a bit and what I said wasn’t put in context,” Lorde explained:

“There’s a lot of importance placed on physical perfection in this industry, and I wish my favorite stars didn’t look perfect because I think fans (me included) have these feelings of worthlessness.”

She adds, “Like they’ll never be as pretty/talented/whatever, as a result of this intense Photoshop culture and the endless strive for perfection.”

Lorde went on to praise the Red singer. “She happens to be good looking, but I think she actually uses her other imperfections in an incredibly powerful and relatable way,” adding, “Taylor Swift has a very unique vision, which I admire.”

Concluding that she is still “very very new to this whole thing,” and “will probably never be the kind of role model for my fans that TS [Taylor Swift] is for hers,” Lorde then explicitly apologized.

“I admire her very much for this reason. Basically, this is an apology for not thinking too hard before I speak. Peace.”

The self-declared feminist previously ruffled feathers when she made a disdainful comment about Selena Gomez’s hit “Come and Get It.”

Explaining her views on feminism and how it relates to her appreciation of music, Lorde declared:

“I love pop music on a sonic level. But I’m a feminist and the theme of her song [Come & Get It] is, ‘When you’re ready come and get it from me.’ I’m sick of women being portrayed this way.”

She may be young, but Lordes is obviously not too worried about an online comeback from Gomez or Swift fans. Perhaps that’s because when “Royals” dethroned Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” from the top of the iTunes US chart, she handled being trolled by Cyrus’ angry fans like a pro.

Great things are expected from Lorde’s debut album Pure Heroine, which was released yesterday.
