Lionel Messi Injured, Will Miss Champions League Match Against Celtic [Video]


Striker Lionel Messi, has been ruled out of the Barcelona’s Champions League match against Celtic and is expected to be out of action for two to three weeks.

Messi suffered a thigh injury during Barcelon’s 2-0 win against Almeria on Saturday night, he was replaced by Xavi.

After scoring his 11th goal of the season, the Argentine was forced out of the game when he injured himself after only 28 minutes of play.

Scans results on Sunday show that indeed Messi won’t be able to play for two to three weeks.

“Leo Messi has a small injury to the biceps femoris [thigh] in his right leg,” a Barcelona statement read.

This was confirmed by medical tests undertaken by the player on Sunday morning at Medical Services Sport City. The Argentinian will be out for approximately two to three weeks, which will certainly force him to miss Barcelona’s two games this week – on Tuesday against Celtic and next Saturday at the Camp Nou against Valladolid.

Barcelona has suffered a series of injuries which have decimated their defense. Adding to Messi’s injury are Javier Mascherano, who was ruled out with a hamstring problem, Jordi Alba, who is suffering the same injury, and Carles Puyol, who is still recovering from his numerous injury problems.

All these injuries are welcome news by Celtic, who is looking to repeat one of the biggest upsets of last season, when a late goal by Toni Watt, gave them the unexpected victory against a powerful Barça, Messi included.

Lionel Messi’s injury was a downer in an otherwise record breaking win on Saturday, Barcelona’s seventh consecutive victory. The team expects to have their starters ready to go after the international break.
