Shayanna Jenkins Indicted On Perjury In Aaron Hernandez Case

Shayanna Jenkins was indicted on one count of perjury in the case against her fiancé, former New England Patriot player Aaron Hernandez.

A grand jury indicted Jenkins on the single charge on Friday, according to a Massachusetts prosecutor. There are now five people facing charges in the case.

The Huffington Post reports that Hernandez is accused of killing his friend, Odin Lloyd, on June 17. The 27-year-old semiprofessional football player was found shot to death in an industrial park near Hernandez’s home.

Lloyd was dating Jenkins’ sister at the time of his death. Hernandez pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and weapons charges in Lloyd’s death. His attorneys have said that the state won’t be able to prove its case against the former NFL player. They expect him to be set free.

ESPN notes that prosecutors believe Aaron Hernandez killed Odin Lloyd because he was upset with him for talking to people at a nightclub whom the football player didn’t get along with.

Shayanna Jenkins isn’t the only person involved in the case to be charged with perjury. Carlos Ortiz, a key witness in the case, was also indicted on perjury charges by a grand jury. Ortiz’s attorney, John Connors, stated that his client pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The perjury count against Ortiz may stem from the news that the witness changed his story. He repeatedly stated that Hernandez and an associate, Ernest Wallace, both left the car they were in with Lloyd before Ortiz heard gunshots. Now, Ortiz says only Hernandez and Lloyd left the vehicle.

Tanya Singleton, a cousin of Aaron Hernandez, was indicted on an additional charge of conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact. She was previously indicted on a charge of criminal contempt after she allegedly refused to testify before a grand jury hearing evidence in the case against Hernandez.

Shayanna Jenkins and Aaron Hernandez have a young child together.
