‘Inception: The Musical’: Yes, It’s Real And It’s Coming To Brooklyn

No, this is not a dream. Inception: The Musical is coming to the stage in Brooklyn for one night only this coming Sunday. There fans of Christopher Nolan’s hit thriller can see performers singing original lyrics alongside a music score in a stage adaptation of 2010’s Inception. Nolan’s now three-year-old film still has a strong following, with a great deal of fanfic and other fan projects making the rounds; surprising, since Inception has not become a continuing franchise.

While many of these have fallen by the wayside, Brooklyn-based production company Treble Entendre will be performing their musical adaptation of Inception. Though it was originally planned as a web-only production, a live performance is coming to Brooklyn’s The Way Station. The Way Station is a Doctor Who-themed bar that has been known as a popular meeting spot for Inception fandom members, clearly the best venue for such a performance.

Speaking to the Daily Dot, composer and lyricist Erica Kudisch says Inception: The Musical is billed as a musical spoof rather than a direct translation. Kudisch says she drew inspiration from Nolan’s official Inception script. That script emphasized a metaphor of Cobb (DiCaprio’s character) as director and Tom Hardy’s character, Eames, as the actor, for example. Kudisch says the musical incorporates these elements more than the final edit of the original film did.

But more than anything, it will be a humorous look at the characters and interpretations of Inception. One angle the musical will explore is the popular belief about the relationship between Arthur and Eames, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy in the film. “There’s just going to be a whole lot of flirting going on,” Kudisch told the Daily Dot. She added that the audience can expect “lots of dick jokes.”

Though Inception: The Musical will only be running for one night, it has generated a great deal of buzz from fans of the film. Many are planning to travel to see the show, including a group of Inception fans coming all the way from Canada.

Included below is a video of outtakes and rehearsals. Though it is from 2010 it does give a glimpse of what can be expected from Inception: The Musical. Will you be making the pilgrimage to New York?
