Melissa Gorga Responds To Book Criticism

Melissa Gorga responded on Twitter this week to critics who thought her book “Love Italian Style: The Secrets Of My Hot And Happy Marriage” promoted marital rape.

Gorga said that the idea that her book was misogynistic and basically endorsed rape was ridiculous.

Gorga responded to the reviews on Twitter, writing: “I’m so disgusted that a reporter has taken things completely out of context simply for shock value. #SAD.”

Gorga is likely referring to Tracie Egan Morrissey of Jezebel.com. Several media outlets have written their own scathing critiques of the book but Morrissey’s article was one of the first to call Gorga out for endorsing rape.

Morrissey points to one passage in particular that seemingly encourages men to rape their wives.

The passage reads: “Men, I know you think your woman isn’t the type who wants to be taken. But trust me, she is. Every girl wants to get her hair pulled once in a while. If your wife says ‘no,’ turn her around, and rip her clothes off. She wants to be dominated.”

Morrissey writes: “That is rape and it is insane that it got past the publisher.”

Kim LaCapria of the Inquisitr took a similar stance. Kim points to a different passage that says a woman must be a puttana (which means “a woman who sells her body for a little money… sometimes just for pleasure) in order to keep her husband from cheating or going to a whorehouse.”

The passage reads: “The way I see it, if a wife is a puttana, her husband will never feel the urge to go outside the marriage to actual whores, or strip clubs. He won’t hit on women in bars, or drool over his friend’s girlfriends or the secretary. He’ll rush home to his wife, who makes sure he’ll have a good time (the best time) in the comfort of his own home.”

Melissa Gorga writes in her book that relationships are built on respect. While most people, like Kim and Tracie, would agree with that point it’s hard to see how “respect” plays a part in “Love Italian Style.”

What do you think? Do you think Melissa Gorga is condoning rape? Is she really saying that women need to be whores (puttanas) in order to keep their men happy?
