Ellen Pompeo: Emmy Awards Were Dated, Had No Diversity

The Emmy Awards featured some of TV’s biggest stars but according to Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo the annual awards show didn’t feature enough diversity.

Pompeo said that the 65th Emmy Awards were embarrassing and dated.

Pompeo said: “I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all. The Emmys felt so dated to me… That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of color in that dance number?”

USA Today notes that Pompeo, who has never been nominated for an Emmy Award, is part of one of the most diverse casts working on television.

Pompeo said: “I’m extremely proud of our very, very diverse cast which represents the world that I walk around in every day.”

That diversity was not something that was present, according to Ellen Pompeo, at the Emmy Awards last night.

What did you think of the 65th Emmy Awards? Did they feel dated? Did the show lack diversity?

The show may have been “stale” and “embarrassing” but it did bring in a lot of viewers. E! Online reports that last night’s show brought in 17.3 million viewers. That is the largest audience since 2005.

Here’s a video of that embarrassing song and dance routine.

Ellen Pompeo has never won an Emmy Award but she did recently win a People’s Choice Award. Grey’s Anatomy has also taken home a few Emmy Awards during its run. The show’s 10th season starts this Thursday.
