Al Davis is a real class act

Posted: January 19, 2011

I guess we should start this off by saying that Al Davis is probably one of the ten most important men in the history of football. He built the Oakland Raiders into one of the finest football organizations going, and that is why his erratic behavior now is so sad and troubling. Every 16 months or so we get treated to another look at Davis’ insanity. In that time he hires and new coach, and then holds a press conference to publicly castrate that man that is now out. Hue Jackson, brother you are now on the clock.

Yesterday’s Al Davis press conference came across like a Charlie Manson parole hearing. I have no idea if Al knows what year it is, or that if he knows Jamarcus Russell is the past. Sure he got to beat his chest for beating Lane Kiffin in an arbitration case. He says Kiffin lied, but the arbitration was handled by the office of the commissioner who is actually semi employed by Al Davis and the rest of the fraternity of owners.

Once he had announced Jackson as the new Raiders head coach, and the 75 or so media members in attendance got up to leave, Al decided to stage a little story time of his own. What followed was a bizarre narrative about how Tom Cable treats the women around him, and about how Davis could not find out if his head coach actually broke one of his employees jaw.

I guess I have to wonder if that was an issue why Cable wasn’t fired when it happened. Of course Cable wasn’t really fired, his contract was just not extended and that is really not the same thing. However with all that said it seemed the thing the irked Davis the most was Cable having his girlfriend accompany the team on road trips.

Apparently you didn’t listen to the whole interview. He explained why he didn’t boot Cable ealier. Sometimes when you have to keep a company functioning, you have to be patient in making changes, even when you want to make them badly. But I guess it’s easier for you to sit in judgement than to use your head. It’s hilarious that you’re ripping on Al Davis for “beating his chest” and being classless when you’re doing the exact same thing in publicly excoriating him for doing what he thought was right. Whether you agree with it or not, he did what he thought was best for the Raiders. That is the one major constant with him.

I watched the interview and didn’t see 75 members of the “media” get up to leave after he announced Jackson as the new HC. I saw 90 minutes of interview by engaged people wanting to talk to him. Guess you’re just an Al Davis hater, which means your blog is of little use.
