Gale Sayers Files Lawsuit Against NFL

Gale Sayers is suing the NFL.

The Former Bears running back filed a lawsuit at the U.S. District Court in Chicago this week. The Hall of Famer is accusing the NFL of negligence saying that the league did not provide players with sufficient information about concussions and brain damage.

Sayers writes in the lawsuit that the NFL failed to protect him from “devastating concussive head traumas.” The former running back says that he now experiences headaches and short-term memory loss due to the concussions he received in the NFL.

The former running back said that he returned to games several times in his career after suffering a concussion. Sayers says that the league did not warn players that multiple concussions could lead to permanent brain damage.

The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Gale Sayers lawsuit comes just a few weeks after the NFL reached a $765 million settlement with 18,000 former players over football related head injuries. The money will be used to pay for medical bills and fund addition research. The NFL did not admit any wrongdoing when it agreed to the settlement.

Bleacher Report notes that helmet maker Riddell was also named in the lawsuit.

Gale Sayers played for the Chicago Bears between 1985 and 1971. He was named first-team All-Pro five times and led the league in rushing during two seasons. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.
