Chinese Beverage Tycoon Attacked, Beaten By Guy Who Really Wanted A Job

Multi-billionaire Zong Qinghou had a terrible week. Not only was he demoted to China’s second-richest man, he was injured in an apparent revenge attack by a guy who either failed to get a job with his beverage company Wahaha or already was an employee who was fired this week, depending on the report.

Reuters reports that Zong, 67, was assaulted Friday morning in a residential area by a man who had been looking for work and failed to get a job with Wahaha.

Zong was physically attacked and suffered multiple injuries to the head. The suspect was arrested, and Zong is presumably (hopefully) okay. Chinese media are never very forthcoming with the details. To wit, Wahaha had nothing to add to the report.

Adding to the confusion, the Herald Sun has the same story but with small differences that make a big difference. For one, they say that Zong’s left hand was injured and that several tendons were actually severed in the attack.

A source told a local Chinese paper that the attack was actually perpetrated by a former employee who had been fired from Wahaha earlier in the week.

The state-backed media, China News Service, apparently corroborates this version with an unnamed Wahaha employee tattling that Zong recently purged a group of executives from the company.

Wahaha Group is China’s leading beverage peddler, and Zong is its chairman. Forbes puts his personal fortune at about $11 billion, and he was first place for a long time until last week when he was trumped by Wang Jianlin, the head of Wanda Group (estimated at $14 billion).
