Under The Dome Finale Offers Answers, Builds Anticipation For Second Season

The Under the Dome finale gave fans of the CBS summer hit a lot of answers about the mysterious dome covering Chester’s Mill and has built anticipation for even more answers in Season 2.

The show ended its first season with a reveal about the (presumed) aliens responsible for the dome. Brian K. Vaughan, the show’s executive producer, told Hollywood Reporter that the Under the Dome finale was a good setup for the second season of the show.

“For me, my concern has always been, ‘Is one audience member in particular happy?’ — and that’s Stephen King,” he said of the author who wrote the book on which the show is based. “He’s been thrilled. We’re so excited to have him on board, especially for the beginning of next season. The show is going to take some very unexpected new directions next season but I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished so far.”

Vaughan added that the first season was a learning experience, but he believes the show has begun to hit its stride.

“I think there are always things — the speed that you’d put together a new show with and the fact that we had 13 episodes just about completed in their entirety before one had even aired,” he said. Looking back, sure, there are always things you’d do differently. For the most part, we concentrate on the parts of the show that we really liked and challenge ourselves to do something new next season.”

Though ratings are not yet out on the finale, the show has seen a dip over the course of the summer. After debuting No. 1 in the coveted demographic of adults age 18-49, the show fell to No. 3 for most of the year and down to No. 10 in the next-to-last episode.

But the ratings were apparently good enough for CBS, which announced in July that the show would return for a second season.

Fans will likely be satisfied with the Under the Dome finale. After a first season filled with questions, the show finally offered some concrete answers. The aliens responsible for the dome took over the body of the late Alice and delivered a message to residents that they are not being imprisoned but rather protected.

But viewers of the Under the Dome finale are left to ask, what are they being protected from? That’s for Season 2 to reveal, it seems.
