iPhone 5S: Walmart Offers Price Discount, But No Pre-Orders

The iPhone 5S is going on sale at Walmart.

The retailer announced that it will be selling the newest version of the Apple iPhone starting September 20. The 16GB version of the iPhone 5S will be available for a $10 discount, at $189.

Walmart will offer sales on other iPhones as well. It is offering its existing inventory of the now out-of-date iPhone 5 for $79, down from $98. The other new iPhone announced by Apple this week — the lower-end and lower-priced iPhone 5C — will be on sale at Walmart for $99 for the 16GB version and $199 for the 32GB model, both with two-year contracts.

The new iPhone combo, announced by Apple this week, is something of an upgrade to last year’s iPhone 5. The new 5S features the updated iOS7 operating system, one that brings a new look to the mobile device’s apps.

Other notable features include a M7 sensor that monitors data when the user is walking, running, or driving. It also has a camera with an updated sensor, a 2.2 view aperture, and 15 percent more active sensors.

The iPhone 5S also has one of the newest innovations in security — fingerprint touch sensors. This allows the user to unlock the phone with a simple tap, though initial rumors said the fingerprint sensor system may be used for much more, like tap-to-pay at cash registers.

Apple has referred to its new flagship iPhone, “is the most forward thinking phone we have ever created,” though it’s being met with some tepid reviews.

But people hoping to get a jump on the new iPhone 5S from Walmart ahead of time it out of luck. Apple announced that it will not be taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5S, though it will for the iPhone 5C.

“The fulfillment of pre-orders will be processed on a first come, first serve basis… subject to manufacturer availability and carrier launch dates,” a Walmart spokesman said in an email about the new iPhone.
