Boston Logan Airport Holds Fire Drill On 9/11, Apologizes For Bad Timing

Boston’s Logan Airport picked a bad day to do a fire drill. The airport held a mock emergency, complete with charred metal and lots of black smoke, today on September 11.

The airport posted a message earlier today on its Facebook page and its Twitter account to warn people about the extra smoke at the airport, but that wasn’t good enough for some internet users.

The airport’s Facebook page has been flooded with messages from people who just could not believe that the airport would choose 9/11 to for a fire drill.

One user pointed out that American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, the two planes that struck the Twin Towers, originated from Logan Airport.

The user writes: “That is ridiculous. Have some respect. People died 12 years ago on flights originating out of your airport. How dare you.”

Another was in disbelief that the airport would choose 9/11, a day that already has many travelers on edge, as the day to run an emergency training exercise.

One user writes: “Seriously?? Today?? Who is the idiot who thought this was a good idea??”

And it wasn’t just the internet community that was perplexed by the airport’s decision to hold a fire drill on 9/11. Gov. Deval Patrick said: “It’s just dumb. I mean the timing could not be worse.”

The Massachusetts Port Authority apologized for the training drill this afternoon on Facebook.

The message reads: “Massport apologizes for conducting the fire training exercise and understands that it may have offended many of those touched by the events of Sept. 11. Safety and security is our top priority and constant vigilance and readiness is critical, but the exercise should not have taken place on the anniversary of 9/11. The airport community recognizes the day with moments of silence, a service in the chapel, and a wreath at the 9/11 memorial.”
