Serena Williams Topples Sloane Stephens At US Open

Serena Williams Wins Fourth Round US Open 2013

Serena Williams has advanced at the US Open after an intense outing with Sloane Stephens. Both women entertained crowds by serving 115 mph rockets at one another while regularly whipping groundstrokes to the corners. Both women also played great defense and showed moments of superstar play and nerve racking breakdowns.

Sloane, who is currently ranked 15th in the world, is one of only three players to defeat the No. 1 ranked Williams this season.

Williams, taking eight of the last nine games, is heading to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows after beating Stephens 6-4, 6-1.

The match started with a score of 4-all in the first set on Sunday, but Serena Williams quickly showed why she is the top-seeded tennis player in the world.

Looking back at the match Stephens says:

“When you give her that opportunity to take that step forward, she definitely makes her move. Unfortunately, today she made her move. I just couldn’t get back in.”

Williams also complimented her opponent:

“I definitely think it was a high-quality match. We both came out today to play.”

Williams is now 64-4 on the year with eight titles to her name.

Serena Williams will now move on to the US Open quarterfinals to take on No. 18 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Navarro defeated No. 8 Angelique Kerber of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Also advancing to the quarterfinals is No. 24 Ekaterina Makarova who defeated No. 3 ranked Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-4. That loss marks the fourth time since 2007 that Radwanska failed to make it past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. 2011 French Open champion Li Na also eliminated 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-0.

A special note of interest: Serena Williams was the oldest player this year to reach the fourth round of the US Open this year, and Sloane Stephens was the youngest player to reach the same round of play.

Williams is the only current member in the top 20 to have a tournament final appearance. Williams has won 16 Grand Slam titles, including four at the US Open.

Do you think Serena Williams is going to wipe the floor with her remaining competition?
